I just received a call from the owner/trainer of this 4 or 5 year old bay filly. The trainer states that she is about 15.1 hands and sound on old osselets. He states that she isn't cut out for the fast race work but should do fine soundness-wise for general riding. According to the trainer this filly is super friendly and a pet. He indicated that he grooms her in her stall without restraint. She is FREE and needs to find a good home ASAP. She is located at the Finger Lakes Race Track in Farmington, NY. She has a very interesting pedigree for sport. Having Cozzene so close is a tremendously positive thing, and there are several of us who have Deputy Minister grandget who think very highly of them. I have two, and they are wonderful. Peggy, on the H/J board, also has known several and is high on Deputy Minister.

Deputy Cat's damline has some sterling horses also. There is a line to Luthier, a Klarion/Ksar line, and that line almost always produces very athletic horses. There are also two lines to Grey Sovereign (one through Guinea Sparrow), and most sport horse people agree that he is one of the top TB lines out there. The number of his descendants who have excelled in sport horse disciplines all over the world are almost uncountable.

Storm Cat seems to be loved by some and dislikely heartily by others. Temperament is part of it, and this mare obviously hasn't inherited that from him. His dam, Terlingua, is one of those TBs whose pedigree is as good for sport as for racing, but since she was such a blue hen racing broodmare, it's only through descendants that sport horse people are able to tap into her quality.

On the bottom side, besides Cozzene--he's so special that one doesn't have to go behind him, but all his lines are fabulous--, you have Ambiopoise, which gives you linebreeding to the same great French jumping lines as Luthier. Twice Worthy's dam Commemoration is equally good. She is in the lines of some horses who have made names for themselves in H/J.

Carry Back and Needles are both Hall of Fame race horses, and Carry Back comes from the very superior jumping line of Pennant/Peter Pan. Countess Tecla is from the superior jumping line of Count Fleet and was out of a War Admiral mare.

I guess I'd say her bottom side is far more proved to produce sport horses, but the top is where modern TB sport horses seem to be trending.

Overall for FREE, either as a riding horse or a broodmare, Pegasus Sun (who has had more than twenty starts) would be a tremendous find if her conformation (front legs (Storm Cat) and body to leg proportions (Northern Dancer)) are functional.

Edited to add that the linebreeding to Grey Sovereign is in a place in the pedigree that would more strongly influence the resulting foal. He is tail female sireline on top, and tail male sireline on the bottom. That's probably the single strongest place that linebreeding is effective.

She also has a factor which I consider very important for superior TB breeders and performers. She has all three of the breed foundation sirelines on her first page and first page + 1 for the mares. Both Ambiopoise and Luthier are Herod line; Flame Enchantee is from the Hurry On branch of the Matchem line, as is Chamossaire, who is by Precipitation, sire of many jumping progenitors, including the great WB sire Furioso. Ranavalo is also Matchem line through the American branch. His sire was Relic, grandson of Man O'War and GGson of Fair Play. The mare up top, Victoriana, is also the American Matchem line from Fair Play through Ladder/Ladkin.

I have to say that Pegasus Sun has one of the most balanced pedigrees among the three foundation sires that has come to my attention. Herod lines are rare and getting rarer, as are Matchem lines. To my thinking there is something about reinforcing all three close up that is very positive.

More about Grey Sovereign.

At least two of his daughters have produced licensed WB breeding stallions. One was Sinful, who was the dam of Sir Shostakovich, licensed by Holstein, Hannover, and Trakehner; the other was Supreme Lady, dam of M-Lolshan, licensed by Zweibrucken.

Of his sons, almost all have produced licensed WB breeding daughters and sons and grandsons. I have found SF, Holsteiner, Hannoverian, Zweibrucken, Trakehner, Selle Italiano, Swedish Warmblood, KWPN, Westfalen, and Hungarian WBs.

Cozzene himself is listed as producing licensed Westfalen and SF sons. This however, may be due to some "undue" influence. Nevertheless, to track down all the WB breeding descendants of Grey Sovereign would take weeks.

Luthier is also strong in WB breeding with licensed descendants in several of the European studbooks. Commemoration is also found in WB pedigrees today, mostly through her French stallion descendant Pharly.

Well, I, of course, think that Finger Lakes horses, in general, are special. What I have noticed, however, is that, because Finger Lakes is a small track, there are a lot of small owner/breeder/trainers. The breeding can be slightly old fashioned because their mares aren't always put to the most fashionable stallions. That's generally good for the sport horse people, though it may not be so good for those who want a quick sprinter.
