I am crying from laughing so hard LOVE the PUNS!

Yes I used boarder collies to help move horses from pen to pen and to load into trailers - they were awesome! And there is nothing like a BC to help halter break a baby!!! My Pomeranian thinks he is "helping" but he is NOT! And the labs - too busy squirreling around to be much help Not going to replace the BC's we no longer breed horses and the last one wore out several flocks of ducks. I'll leave the wonderful BC's to people with enough imagination to provide them enough to do. A bored BC is a sad thing indeed!

Oh, dear. I'm really glad your horses cooperated and didn't hurt your BC. I know of many BC hurt or killed by horses.

I got my first one from the owners of Scotch Bar Time. I watch the dogs gently help Renee' with a orphaned foal. They never ever nipped like a heeler! They just moved along side and "bumped" as needed.

I trained mine to "head"(which is a natural instict for them) in case I had a run away - which on a commercial farm happens. If a boarder loses control and lets go of the horse and it heads down the driveway, rather than chase it the BC would come around the front in a big arc and turn the horse back toward the stable yard. It was SUCH a BIG help! It prevented horses from getting on the road and potential causing an accident or becoming injured.

For loading as I am often on my own to load mare & foal pairs the BC would keep the foals with their mommas and guide them in. I had a heeler for BAD loaders too

The key to using BC's with horses is diligent training. I never allowed them to roam the paddocks or pastures, because a BC will herd anything and everything it can! I always started them on ducks and worked into horses. I can't whistle so I used other sounds and words to send them left right etc. I did have one over zealous one get kicked BAD once. But heck my labs, coydog, GSD, pommie, saluki cross, and assorted mutts have just about all been kicked.
