Default What has four legs and barks with an accent?

    Our [soon-to-be] German Shepherd puppy

After the dog disaster last time, we decided to look into reputable breeders. We came across a breeder in Tennessee who breeds West German Showline German Shepherds (the large blk/red Shepherds). My Tobey was a WGS dog, and I loved his temperament. He loved to work and play, but he was also content hanging around the house.

The puppy is 8 weeks old currently, and the breeder offers AKC registration, health/hip guarantee, a puppy kit, obedience classes, and more.

    Pictures will come after Sunday

This calls for Becks and some polka music! Congratulations! Perfect timing - it's Fasching zeit!

Aw heck - I don't remember any Fasching songs - let's do Oktoberfest instead.

    All together now!

    In München steht ein Hofbräuhaus:
    Eins, zwei, g'suffa !

Da läuft so manches Fäßchen aus:
    Eins, zwei, g'suffa !

Da hat so mancher brave Mann:
    Eins, zwei, g'suffa !

Gezeigt was er so vertragen kann
Schon früh am Morgen fing er an

Und spät am Abend kam er heraus

    So schön ist's im Hofbräuhaus.

Andrew said in the grocery store line last night, "uh oh. We may have a problem with Cash and the new puppy."

    "What?"

"Well Cash...is technically British. The new puppy is German."

"I don't think it will be WWII in our house."

    "I was thinking WWIII."

I seem to recall a Fawlty Towers episode - where is ChocoMare? She always find those funny bits on YouTube and posts them.

Name the new puppy Blitz. Or Winston. Not Neville. No no no.....

    ETA - FOUND IT!!!! Classic!

    Sorry, JSwan,
I used to be able to read "The Fox and the Grapes" in German, but have lost even that now.
I CAN sing the Dutch Birthday Song, however. And can curse in American Sign Language....

I can sing Happy Birthday in American Sign Language thanks to the Fonz wanting to win over a girl that was deaf on Happy Days

I should post pictures of the pup on here Sunday and have COTH name him

You've done the right thing going to a good responsible breeder. But there is no such thing as a hip "guarantee". Both parents can and should be hip scored and if they're hip scored for generations then even better.

But no such thing as a "guarantee" as it's not purely just down to being an hereditary condition. That's just one of the factors which gives rise to hip displasia. Furthermore it's a living thing and whilst it's right and proper to strive to reduce the risks, things happen.

Sorry. I have not been on in a little over a week due to a series of dark clouds: an accident last Saturday; I did get the puppy. This past Friday my mother was diagnosed with malignant lesions on her liver and spleen, and tonight...I sprained my ankle.

I do have puppy pictures though. We named him "Grimm":

    Day we got him

Two days later: note the ears

    Thursday Ears

    Friday Ears

And while I know there is not guarantee against HD, etc. the guarantee merely says that if the dog is diagnosed as dysplastic (must have prelim X-rays done by an Ortho vet at 12 mths of age and the X-rays sent into OFA at 24 mths of age), then our boy will get neutered, and we get his purchase price back. I do know that HD and ED are not merely hereditary, and stipulated in the guarantee discussed environmental factors as well (diet, excessive exercise at too early an age, etc.). I have twenty years experience with German Shepherds...this isn't my first one

I doubt I will be online this week much. I am sending out some things to COTH members on Monday from work, and then I am headed to be with my mother.

Awww, cute puppy...and cute puppy ears! I think he came into your life at a time when you can use a HUGE dose of puppy ears! I hope he cheers you and your mother up as you face her health challenges. Those ears have healing magic in 'em!

just remember those cute ears will continue to dance around while he goes through teething, by 6 months most of the adult teeth should be in...our 5 month old's ears have been pretty good the last 4 weeks, but the left one went down a bit yesterday...still waiting for a few more teeth!!

Yep - I definitely know about the "carousel ears" of German Shepherds (up and down until post-teething). His ear cartilage isn't damaged, and all dogs in his bloodlines have erect ears so I don't see an issue with them not coming up permanently [eventually].

I'm very sorry to learn about your mother though - hope everything turns out ok.
