Default Mare is mumbling!! Update: mumbling mare is a mom! :) Link to pics in post #18

I have a mare at 345 days today. She is getting very close -- waxing and agitated and showing all the other classic physical signs of impending baby.

And as I watch her on the foalcam, her mouth is going NON-STOP! I have seen the frequent yawns before. But this is a whole array of mouth movements -- little half yawns, lip stretches, and what looks like muttering under her breath.

My camera has no sound, so it's possible she is cursing me, or the stallion. Or perhaps she is saying the Rosary. I just don't know.

Have you seen this before? Is it a pain reaction? Nervous reaction? Mare is a maiden.

Probably just nerves and discomfort but it is good to keep an eye on her. She is a maiden and has no idea what is happening to her right now.

I've had mares flip their lips up (like stallions) due to the pain so if that happens I wouldn't be too alarmed.

Poor girl. I'm laughing with her, not AT her. Really.

Just keep an eye on her to see that she makes progress...my only bred mare last year started into labor, and then stopped without rupture of membranes. Vet thought she was just re-positioning the foal. She finally delivered a gorgeous big colt a week later...and it soon became evident he had gotten a recent onset of sepsis.

    Jingles & prayers!

Have you done a foal watch test (I use Chemetrics) yet? What did it say?

You know, I think she's talking to God.

"God, first you sent The Flood. And I repented. I am TRYING to be a Good Girl. Now THIS. What is THIS??? There is something inside of me doing the butterfly stroke. And it Wants Out Now."

Jewel had a beautiful dun tovero filly at 9:30 p.m. What a considerate girl to go so early, and on a Friday night too! Everything went extremely well. It's exciting and relaxing at the same time to be watching the mama and baby on the foalcam instead of a poor, uncomfortable mumblin' mare!

FYI, I was not doing milk tests on this mare. I handled her udder throughout her pregnancy but when it got full, she got cranky. And a bit kicky. She was GREAT for the baby though! And being a filly, the wee (or actually not-so-wee) one caught on to everything really quickly and easily. Meconium passed, placenta passed, all is well.

Yeah, I was prepared for all the baby stuff but forgot to charge the camera batteries! Pics as soon as I can get them, can't believe I won't have "first night" shots...

Great news!! Congratulations! At least in the future you know if she starts to mumble again to look out!

Funny how they can be kicky when we handle their udder and then perfect for baby. Can't say I blame them I guess.

    We need pics now!

    First filly photos!

Mare and baby are nickering to each other in normal horsie fashion, though while the filly was passing the HUGEST pile of first baby poop I have ever seen, her little nose and lips were going a mile a minute. Seems the mumbler didn't fall far from the tree...
