    Exclamation Nurse Mare Needed ASAP

From Cindy Harris Paints in Delaware...

    pass this along please
If you hear of anyone who has lost a foal let me know. We're looking for either a nurse mare or trying to find milk replacer. We lost a mare this afternoon. We have a 3 week old orphan.

I emailed you information on orphan foals, and feeding them using an igloo cooler.

Try Gert and Helen Stern of Justaplain Farm in West Grove / Oxford (or close to there) PA. They very successfully handle orphan foals all of the time.

If you PM your e-mail I can scan and forward a protocol for inducing lactation in a barren mare. It worked for us but did take about 2 weeks for the mare to start having enough quantity before thinking of stopping artificial milk replacer.

Hopefully she'll get the information from Fairview. we've raised a number of orphaned foals, from being orphaned at 10 hours old, 24 hours orphaned to 2 months old. A routine works very well.

The "hardest" ones we had actually were those who had been on their dams and then lost their dams. We actually have had to use human baby bottle nipples and in one case, syringes (until my saint of a broodmare nursed him AND her own colt).

    Jingling for the baby.

I've only had good experiences with Sandy's service. Best wishes for the baby.

I "third" Just A Plain Farm. We sent our mares there for foaling and couldn't have been happier with the care and prices. We saw the orphaned foals and how they were raised and the all looked happy and healthy and they took great pride in caring for them!
