    Unhappy I need some jingles...

Today was the BEST of days, and the WORST of days. I woke up to a new America filled with hope... Then, disaster struck. My namesake, the REAL Sebastian -- 18 yr old TB -- had a pasture accident. He was playing and turned too hard and the large pastern bone on his right hind broke in 4 places... The vet came and took X-rays, so we knew what we were dealing with... And, the prognosis was bad. So rather than be selfish (which was REALLY TEMPTING) and try to keep him going for OUR well being, we decided to let him go... So, the jingles are really for those of us left behind to grieve...

I'm kind of flopping between emotionally numb/disbelief and sobbing... It was such a great morning, watching the inauguration and all... Then, this. I just keep telling myself that he had finally found happiness and maybe that's why he decided it was ok to go... I don't know. Never will. I'm just grateful to have known him. He not only made me a better horsewoman, he made me a better person. He was a special boy and a HUGE part of making me who I am... I will miss him horribly.

Ironically, I've been preparing myself for a call like this on my beloved Echo who will be 26 this year... But, instead it's darling Sebie. He had just gone to live with a good friend of mine to be her Dressage horse. I got him when he was 6 and he was my Hunter for a number of years, but recently he had decided that he no longer liked jumping. And, was downright giddy when we went full-time Dressage... His eye was softer and more confident than I had EVER seen it this last year. I'm trying to take comfort from the fact that he was finally truly happy in his life and his job. He had bonded with my friend, who had become his new full-time mommy, instantly, it was such a match made in heaven...

God, please take care of my Sebie. He's a sensitive soul... And, tell him, that I KNOW this tribute doesn't do him justice, but it's all I can muster on short notice...

    Thanks,
    Christine (aka Sebastian)

p.s. Thanks to all who put up with me over on Off-Topic forum...it was a good distraction.

It is never a good time to lose a horse no matter what his age.

I'm glad he had a great life with you. And I'm glad you made sure your 26 yr old is in good care.

My deepest sympathies on your loss.

I have walked a mile in your shoes, I lost a 2-year-old gelding to a broken leg 3 years ago. And I thought the same thing, I always thought that my older horses would be the first to go, not him.

Time will ease your pain, but in the meanwhile, take whatever time it takes to grieve!
