Default BLIND horse update: post 36 and question re: evaluating vision in a horse...

The vet is due to arrive any moment, but my TB gelding who is already blind in his left eye was acting funny this morning at feeding time. They told me he seemed cold, so I ran out to check on him. He was grazing calmly when I went out, but as soon as he heard me he threw up his head and acted alarmed. I walked up to him and he relaxed and let me lead him toward the gate, when I though 'man, his bad eye looks really bad today..' and then I realized it was his good eye. Its inflamed, a bit cloudy and very runny. He tripped into a stall and bumped each wall and bucket, so he's obviously not seeing anything. He's not paniced though, just unsure. Does moon blindness come on that fast? Hoping its just a scratch or ulcer. I'll update after the vet is out. Major jingles please?

What was the cause of the loss of sight in his other eye? If it was an illness, could he have the same thing in this eye?

jingling here from NY. As some know my Clydesale Doc had his right eye removed on the 29th of December (cancer). He needs his left eye taken out in the spring.

I would say now, watching him in his pasture, with his buddies, he has Maybe 25% eyesight. The cancer is blocking his left eye now and he can't open it much. He gets around pretty well, plays too. He's only bumped into things a few times-the fence, which often we don't have on much, the water trough. He's really adjusting.

My point, and as other reassurred me, was that they do adjust. I make a point of touching him each day so he knows I am there and I talk to him often.

Let's hope your boy does not lose all of his eyesight but there are lots of blind horse who have full lives.

I gave a pony away once to a family that had a Percheron X mare with moon blindness. She wore a special fly mask with big round mesh eye holes. This pony became her eyes for a long time. Good luck.

The "bad" eye was the result of an injury when he was young, IIRC.

Massive jingles for your dear Ari! Call if you need me...heading back your way in the AM.
