You know what makes me saddest is to see the pictures, especially when the horse is looking directly into the camera and you can see the white tag on their butts.

Not to hijack, I'm also sad when I see an older horse up on CraigsList being sold or given away because he is too lame or too old or whatever. The person was able to care for this animal all their life and then when it hit 19, 25 or whatever...well, now it's time to get "rid" of the horse. If you rode the horse, used the horse all the way up to those years, why can't you keep it in its retirement or mercifully put it down. And, don't give me the money thing...I see all sorts of show/gymkhana pictures of these horses. There's always money for someone to show but when it comes to paying for retirement or euthanasia, that money disappears. Why is that?

You know there have been freebie horses all along. I'm a horse person almost 40 years and a horse owner 28 years. In all the years of owning horses, I've only bought one and he was a PMU.

    Just so sad...all of it.
Sorry! But that barn smell is my aromatherapy!

No actually it is about money for many people I show, raise, and breed horses, cattle, and sheep. When their breeding days are over I sell them for money to help operate my business. If I were to keep everyone of them I'd have literally 100's to support with no return. I owe myself and my family much more then that.

county - I believe p4e was referring to people who own only one or two equines, and for whom this is not a business, or a way to support yourself, but a pleasure/luxury.

If people with 1 or 2 head of livestock don't want to sell them to slaughter by all means don't I've never heard anyone say they should. If they do then by all means do so none of this is hard to figure out we each have the right to do with our livestock as we please as long as its legal.

Everything that's legal isn't necessarily right or a good idea, county. The point was being made that your criteria, that horses need to pay their way economically, isn't the same decision-making criteria used by recreational owners.

And I agree its not what I'm saying is just because one person doesn't do something hardly means the next one shouldn't its a choice each one makes. Theres is no rule based on income or what a person does for recreation as to what they have to do with their livestock.

Well bless your heart, but you implied I was ignoring the issue.... you do not have to go to an auction to see the problem all around us or be aware of the horrendous situation. And you do not have to go to an auction to be part of the solution either.
Read Craigslist, heck read COTH where someone wants to give away their show horse who is permanently lame because they can not afford to retire him/her AND get a 2nd horse to show and GOD FORBID they just suck it up and have one retiree horse for a while and not show.
