Blanket Help
Okay guys, so my mare needs a new blanket. Unfornunatly I'm on a very limited budget. I normally go for Rambos but thats to expensive right now. I was looking at this blanket http://www.doversaddlery.com/weather...1-24185/cn/64/ and just wanted some opinions on it since I've never used a Weatherbeeta.
Are there any other good brands out there in that price range?
But its no use going back to yesterday because I was a different person then

While I've bought and used weatherbettas before and liked them, 600 denier will shred pretty quick. Either go with the higher denier version or I believe sstack.com has some higher denier blankets for less $$. I would not even bother buying anything less than 1000 denier.
Amigos also might work for you--the entry level blankets produced by horseware ireland. I've never used them, but lots of people seem happy with them.

I've heard good things about Dover's Riders Int'l rugs.

Heavens, go to sstack.com, Schneiders, and look at their deals. I've bought numerous blankets from them and they always have sales going on older models. You can get 1200 denier turnouts, HW or MW for under $100. some are $70-$80.

I also really like Dover's International blankets - I have had my heavyweight t/o for about 4 years and it is still going strong!
Also, I just bought this Weatherbeeta mediumweight for my mare and really like it so far:

Plus, The Hitching Post has free shipping over $100 (which can't be matched by Dover) and it was at my door in 2 business days - I was very impressed!

Check out Ebay, I saw several Rambos listed last night.
Also, on the Tack forum, there was someone with a couple for sale.

Weatherbeeta's are great rugs. However do try to go for 1200D, so the Oricans and not the Landas (only 600D)

Not sure what size you are looking for but at Dr Forsters they have some WB's Orican for sale.
Or Stateline tack has an orican for only $68!!! 1200D and heavyweight.

I do not like the Schneider at all. Minimal tailflap vs the large WB freestyle tailflap. The neck opening in Schneiders blankets I find too large even with their adjust a thingy on the side.
Good luck.

I was looking at a nice blanket for around $100 called Polar (Polar Tough?) They had heavy, medium and lightweights (sheet). All turnouts. But I ended up with another HUG because of funky TB shoulders that rub. Love them, tough and well made. (From Dovers) Have heavy, medium and light, turn out and stable. Weatherbeatas are OK but I had problems with the nylon lining soaking up water underneath so the pony was wet while the outside was dry. May have been just due to weird pony neck/shoulder. My horse size one lasted forever and only last year lost insulation "poof" and went from heavy to medium weight it seemed! But I don't think they are made quite as well as they were way back then. (well about 10 years ago).
I have an off brand 1200 lined TO sheet by Worldbeater which was supposed to be an offshoot of weather beata but I never could find it on the net. But it is extremely well made and very tough. I don't know if they make heavy blankets though. It is a 75 and is a little small for my 76ers so I'd get a size larger probably if yours is an even # size.
The Real McCoy NZ blankets were very tough but HEAVY. They were from Millers so don't know if they are even made anymore but fantastic for field horses esp. those in groups.

Some Weatherbeatas I like but I am VERY wary when buying them. I got one sheet one winter that didn't even last my poor horse a month! And this was right after having his eye removed so he was all by himself. The blanket would just slide back so far that he would be stuck and unable to move. It wouldn't stay put or slide forward again when he walked. It was HORRIBLE, I still have the damn thing and wont even donate it to a rescue for fear their horses would get stuck in the blanket like mine did. It was honestly probably the worst purchase I have ever made.
However, after that rant, I will say that I believe that sheet was a taka, and I did buy another Weatherbeata because it was on sale and I was able to check the inside of the blanket to make sure it wasn't going to get my horse stuck and it was fine. I believe that one was an orican, but I can't remember for sure.

KristiKGC, correct, TAKA must have been the worst blanket Weatherbeeta ever came up with. I know of a lot of people who have been very disappointed with that particular blanket, it was just cut too wide in every sense (neck, body, sides) for most horses.
I got by with it with my horses, but the latest Freestyle cut is soooooooooo much better, no slippage, stays put, no rubs etc.
No, I would not recommend anyone to buy the Taka, waiste of money.
To the OP, here's another 1200D Weatherbeeta in the same price range of $99 :

For $110, I'd be expecting a lot more. Like 1680 denier.
I own the Schneider's Classic Euro ($90) and like it fine--1200 denier, 200 grams fill, and well constructed. I own the turnout sheet version (no fill) and it's on its third season. Don't forget coupon code "K" in checkout to get $10 off orders of $50 or more.

I'm happy to know it wasn't just me who hated those blankets. The wider cut should have been perfect for my guy but I think the lining on it is what made it so bad for him. Something about it didn't allow the blanket to move with him, though it might have had something to do with the fact that he was clipped as well.
As I said before, the other Weatherbeeta I have has been fine, but since that Taka was the first Weatherbeeta I had ever purchased it sure did leave a sour taste in my mouth!
