I feel like I should share my special spotted man. He wasn't a sport horse through blood, but he had the talent.

He was just over 15 hands, and was good at everything. EVERYTHING. If you wanted a stellar hunter round on him, get on him for a week, show him on the weekend, and expect to place. Dressage was easy for him, and was what we did with him while he was with us (schooling 3rd-4th level). He fox hunted extensively, he had western gamers jump on him and running barrels within 20 minutes.. he was unreal.

He was a goof-ball on top of it all. His sense of humor was freakishly human, as was his mischievous side. He was constantly underestimated because of his breed and his size, and it made me so proud every time he went out there, did his thing, and not only succeeded, but won hearts while doing it. Everyone loved him. He was just one of "those" horses.

We lost him in May of '07 as a 7 year old to a complete and utter freak accident when he was struck by lightening. It hasn't been an easy year without him.

Is is great to beat the folks that talk the most smack. Appaloosa horses are totally underrated. You bet they are smart and love to play games. I really think that is the biggest problem....They out smart their owners.

Are there particular Appy lines that are good for jumping? Appies, like a lot of breeds, seem to have individuals that are all over the map in type!

[Silver Sport Horses]

We have a super filly by our stud out of a appy mare. When her dam was present to the BWP for inspection this year her filly's movement received gasps from the audience with comments of, "did you seee that foal trot!" We were also asked if she was being presented. They couldn't tell that she was by a QH stud and not a WB. Unfortunately she didn't get her dam's spots but she did get her sire's silver dilution gene. She is believed to be the only confirmed silver appaloosa.

If I still own her when she is old enough to breed she will be bred to a fantastic Appy or a WB.

Her dam is currently in foal to a Oldenburg stallion for 2009.

Grayarabpony -- usual rules apply. Be careful with QH blood, as many of the popular Appy lines are heavily crossed with halter horses. You don't want downhill, small bone, small feet. Overwhelming butt doesn't help much either. But rules are made to be broken, and it all comes down to the individual..

From the horses in my original post,

Mood Indigo -- 100% rangerbred. No QH, no TB as far as I can go back in his pedigree. He should be small, quick, and western but he's huge (16'3"), English, and looks/jumps like a warmblood.

Spot Treatment -- Appy/QH cross, 15'0". He's the most stylish jumper we have, lightning fast, spectacular mover. Prelim dressage scores frequently beats the horses, once by 6 points or more. Should have been a pony but someone forgot to tell him -- he thinks he's a 17'0" hand Holsteiner. His best feature is his heart.

Wap's Rocky Road -- Wap Spotted line (full Apps) x TB. Classic cross, looks like a tall elegant TB with fabulous color and lightning on all 4 legs. We haven't jumped him yet, but he's athletic as hell so we don't have any concerns about jumping.

These guys couldn't be more different, but they're all athletes, very intelligent, uphill, good necks, very trainable. So they can come from any direction!

Any other research or opinions to know more about the blue eye and large white cropping out on apppaloosas?

I'm betting it's splash at work. (Possibly splash + sabino.) The blue eye and the lopsided face-white is a dead giveaway. This makes sense even more given the fact that neither parent exhibits much white. Frame doesn't usually hide while splash can and does. Sabino rarely if ever causes blue eyes. (Most blue eyed sabino horses also carry splash and/or frame.)

That colt is absolutely stunning. I have always been a huge fan of the breed. I WILL own a sporthorse-type appaloosa mare one day!

You beat me to it. TONS and TONS of splash in appys. (I also personally dont think sabino EVER causes blue eyes, but thats IMO.

[Altamont Sport Horses]

We breed Appaloosa Sport Horses and Trakehners. I hope to eventually breed a few Knabstruppers each year. The Chocklate Confetti and JG Appaloosa's Waps Spot 2 bloodlines are good jumpers. We have both lines represented on our farm.

Etched in Chocklate came from Mellanie's breeding program (Confetti Farms). She is by Chocklate Confetti and out of a Standardbred mare. Boy can this girl move! I really need to take new photos of her. He doesn't have any spots, which I didn't really expect anyway. I have since found white hairs in his mane and on his hips. Bears Optical Illusion also has Chocklate Confetti in her pedigree and is by the stallion (now gelded) Bear Paw Confetti which competed in dressage as a stallion and I understand now has been cleaning up on the hunter circuit. Illusion produced a huge lovely leopard filly this year, Waps A Daisy, by JG Appaloosas' Wap Spot. www.altamontsporthorses.com/wapsadaisy.html Illusion injured herself but if she is feeling better in 2009 she will be rebred to Wap Spot.

Waps Skip N Line also has Waps Spot 2 bloodlines and is a very athletic mare. www.altamontsporthorses.com/wapsskipnline.html In 2007 she produced a nice and very athletic black/brown filly that loves to jump by the premium Trakehner stallion Tanzeln. Tallulah Belle was born with characteristics but no spots (welll, she did have one spot on her belly). She has since started developing snowflakes and has more mottling. The mare was ultrasounded yesterday to confirm she was still in foal. The foal was jumping around inside already. It was hilarious to watch. We are hoping for a well spotted foal this time. The dam is a few spot (homozygous for LP which permits the spotted pattern to be expressed) but based on her 2007 filly she is only carrying one of the PATN1 genes which actually produces a large spotted pattern.

We also have a beautiful moving large-blanketed Appaloosa/TB stud colt, Hollywood Hot Spot, out of a mare that is Holsteiner approved and has produced several gorgeous Holsteiner foals. Some of the racing bred Appaloosas are beautiful sport horses as well. Echos Money Hustler comes from racing bloodlines on bottom and her sire was a jumper. I'd love to see Spot Treatment's pedigree. I have seen a couple of truly spectacular English-style QHs, and once knew an Appy that could piaffe (he was also somewhat crazy, but quite the athlete -- looked like a TB/ Appy cross).

Grayarabpony -- listed "The Mood Indigo" on "All breed pedigree query." Am working on Spot Treatment, but he's pretty unique and his pedigree is difficult (can you believe, gelded QH on grade leopard mare?).

Appaloosa.. color or breed???? I can't answer this question but curious to throw it out there. It seems when I hear app sport horse people speak that they would say 'breed'. I have bred it only for the color.. ifffff it shows into Holsteiner blood. I have Holsteiner sire line and a Holsteiner Verband stam in my colored foals... bred down to 4% appaloosa blood and get to keep the color.

You won't forget him if you see him in person. Even the German judges are impressed with his quality. Come visit in person if you like. I've moved to just south of Middleburg. His pictures are on two sites; cloverlone has his pedigree and championsporthorse has his latest photos of three months.

Since you guys are talking about Apps.. I think you all should take a look at Virginia Hood's JG Appaloosas. THEY are wonderful movers, Great jumpers, and have the best quality and temperment out there for sport horses. She has a proven show record BOTH In Hand and Over Fences here on the East Coast. That lady knows her business and has produced some wonderful horses. I rave her . I adore all her animals , and to me there is no other that can compair to her when it comes to Knowledge, skill , and showmanship.
