Monday's win was so noted in the Saratoga thread too and he's been cited on others before This was his maiden victory.

Arrrr's been a fan favorite runner on the downstate NY tracks for a while. Tom Durkin has enjoyed calling his races each time.

That is on my list of "dumbest names ever" for racehorses. The top of the list is Bodacious Tatas. Don't people even think of the announcers when they name these animals?

Sorry - I'm going against the current here. In my opinion, it's a stupid name.

So I humbly agree to disagree with you all.

I normally don't like silly names for horses (esp. our grand TBs, who are *surely* too elegant for such foolishness).

But I blushingly admit that I really do like "Arrrr". Mainly b/c I kinda suspect the horse likes it too.

Actually the breeder named him and did so just to hear that during the race call.

    Times Union 7-29

    Channeling his inner pirate

Arrrrr won the second race, which allowed NYRA track announcer Tom Durkin to provide one of the funniest race calls you'll ever hear.

``Arrrrrrrr! Arrrrrrrrr! Arrrrrrr!'' Durkin growled as the New York-bred gelding came down the stretch for the first win of his career in 13 tries.

And that's exactly what Arrrrr breeder and co-owner James McGlinn had in mind.

``I named him that just so I could hear the announcer call it,'' he said.
Arrrrr was bred by James R. McGlinn, who shares ownership with Robert Genovese. Trainer Michael Miceli. The 4-year-old gelding is by Regal Classic-Lemons Ain't Limes (Bold Ruckus)

I think there is a thread here about crazy racehorse names.
One that seems pretty innocent in print, until you start saying it quickly (such as an announcer calling it over and over...) was "Honor an Offer"....

I'll agree, it's cute. OTOH, there's the old saying that there was never a good horse with a bad name.

I was about to ask, wasn't that Tom Durkin, who among his other stellar calls has the one feature "Doremifasolati"? Too funny!

See, I'm a deep believer that TBs trash-talk each other (heck, I *know* they do - I remember many an exchange between HRH Avery and an OTTB-turned-Dressage-Prince at our old boarding barn - they were deeply competitive and they hated each other), and I keep thinking about that whole Muhammad Ali "What's my name?" scenario!

    "What's my name?"

    "Arrrrrr."

    "What's my NAME??"

    "ARRRRRRRR!"
