I dont remember if I posted about my first level debut here last month. My mare went NUTS b/c she couldnt see my friends mare in the stall next to her and spent most of her time in the stall on her hind legs, trying to see over the 10-12' wall. Of course, u/s she was tense, but shes NEVER stupid. First test, 1:2, was tense and not forward. Still got like a 59.7 and 2nd in that. 1:1 I went off course TWICE! in my free walk (OOPS) and still got a 61.3% (had a 63.3 before the errors!) and got 1st.

This weekend I showed T4 b/c I needed one more score for my championships and 1:2. Layla was so much more behaved and only reared once in her stall for my friends mare. lol

We hung out for about an hour before tacking up and warming up. She was being great. Still a little wiggly to the left but not bad.

First test was 1:2. She was working great but when we came out of the 15m canter circle left, she was totally falling out, so I half halted on the outside rein.. a little too hard.. head came up. Then after the extended canter left, again too hard of a half halt, and she broke into the trot for 1/2 a step. I got a 4 on that! Opps.

But other than my mistakes, she was great. Still working on keeping her rhythm consistant and her not ducking behind the contact and getting low in the poll. And we can get her to stretch forward, down and out 50% of the time.

Next test was Training 4. Again, she was great. No major boo-boos on my part. However, after I walk at M, and am preparing for my free walk, I hear the bell! I was like WHAT!? I knew I wasnt off course. After standing for like 5 mins, the judge figures out it's her mistake, gets the scores fixed, and I pick up my walk again.

I got a 61% in 1:2 (not bad for my mistakes) and 2nd of 2. The lady I rode against has a SUPER nice Trak and has a lot more experience than I do at 1st level.

    I got a 68% in T4 and 2nd again of 6. So I was very very happy.

I uploaded my videos to Photobucket but apparently theres a 5 min limit.. so the last 45 seconds of my 1:2 test are cut off. I will try to upload the end tomorrow. I also took a lot of photos from the tests and uploaded them. Ill post my favs and the link if anyone wants to see all of them.

New goals to work on in lessons:

on Layla - Stretching OUT along with down; keeping a more stready connection; not allowing her to lower her poll; and consistant rhythm at trot

on Me - LEAN BACK; shoulders back, thumbs up, elbows BENT

Heres the videos.. BTW Photobucket made them both look super choppy and faster than they did on my computer and camera.. Dont know why. So no, my horse is not lame and no we did not trot that fast.

You would present a much more polished picture if you carried your hands correctly. Up more in front of you and not so down on her neck.

I was looking at one photo and I thought, were it not for your hands, it would really be a pretty picture.

I do the same thing, it is a bad habit but worth breaking.

    All the best.

Thanks. I totally agree. Bad habits and bad muscle issues need to go away!

    several things:
    1) get a better sports bra- the bouncing is distracting.
    2) at moments your arm is very braced and your mare is fighting contact.
    3) Post so that you're not bracing with your back quite so much until you can soften your hip and follow the movement of your horse's back
    4) work lots of transitions to get the mare up and out in front of your leg
    5) more forward!!!

Cute little mare and you certainly seem to enjoy her. Congratulations on all your successes and may they continue! Best of luck!

p.s.- where is this show?- what a complex in the background! Wowzer!

You guys look lovely! Congrats on the scores, that's a nice move up score!

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think that's the Jacksonville Equestrian center.

Gee - I bought the super duper $50+ Enell sports bra. Maybe I need sports bra for my stomach??

Yes, that is the Jax Eq Center.

Just to show that my position isnt totally CRAP...

    Thumbs up

You two have come so far together - congrats! Layla looks so much more relaxed and happy. I'm proud for you both.

    Very nice.
You seem to be doing the same thing I do with my elbows. They're a little braced. You (and I) need to have that joint open and close with the movement of the horse. I just started to correct it, but I have to tell you, it feels like I'm moving the elbow joint and my hands ALOT. But my trainer thinks we are on the right track and she was very happy when I started doing that.

As for the sports bra, looks fine to me. I'm -let's just say- 'blessed' in that department and may just have to go out and purchase one of those.

Why can I never get the "photobucket" videos to work? What's the secret?

Hahaha its guarenteed not to allow you to bounce. I think my tummy is what is moving! LOL

Thanks everyone. I am SO pleased with my little mare. I got all of her issues fixed (hock injections, Adequan, great farrier, WONDERFUL trainer) and she is just so great. I switched feed, found a great hay provider, and I dunno.. she talks to me every time she sees me.. if I walk over to her and say "HI PONIKENS!" she whinnys like crazy. Maybe she loves me now?? LOL

Ya know, when I THINK about my arms and elbows I can follow and carry them. Its just that you get so set on remembering the test and doing this and doing that, that you allow bad habits back in. I def need to be able to replicate a proper position in the show ring!

BTW - Photobucket videos.. once it loads, click on the photo or the frozen frame of the video and it will play. Generally, AOL and Photobucket dont get along, at least on my comp, so I open it in IE.

KrazyTB, job well done!!! I love First 2, that's my new favorite test that I plan on doing at our next show, which is not for awhile actually. I have just ridden it in lessons so it was cool for me to see it ridden. What score did you get on that stretchy trot circle? Man, that was a stretch! Thanks for sharing your great day!! I also loved seeing Jill's pix on UDBB, but when I wrote a long reply to the thread, it went bye-bye when I clicked on submit (which happens to me alot on that BB). Anyway, when you see her, give her a big congrats to her and Mingo as well.............You go girls!!! Robin :-)

Thanks Robin! Actually I got 6's on both stretchy circles. She def stretches down but she needs to go more out, which I totally agree with. First 2.. I dunno I just LOVE it. I use parts of the test for my warm up now (LY to canter) and it just flows really well. Jill did awesome (as did Mingo) and she so deserved those scores. I was so stoaked for her. I was in the warm up when she walked by with her blue ribbon and I yelled "WOO HOO!" and Layla was like WHATS GOING ON!? lol But yes, 1:2, Youll have a blast showing it. Thanks again and good luck at your show!
