Significant Milestone -- Foundation Broodmare is 30 Today!
Just wanted to celebrate Metier's birthday with you all -- she has been a member of our family for 27 years and produced 10 wonderful foals for us. We still have 2 of them and 2 grandkids. She looks great (although has a bit of a "dip" in her topline!), feels good, enjoys her food and doesn't need any maintenance. She produced the love of my life and his successor, who I still have. She is a little, black Thoroughbred mare with some amazing foundation lines up close (Metierofthefield) and she is very dear to us. I groomed her this AM and took some pictures, including of one of her touching noses with Master Huntsman, our foundation stallion and sire of 4 of her foals. He turns 28 on Sunday and his paddock mate is already 29 this year. So, it seems we are increasing our geriatric residents (including hubby and me and some small animals!). I can't post the pictures, but will be happy to share them with anyone who would like to see her. Raise a glass to her tonight, she has been a blessing and a joy to us!

Oh, how sweet! I was very touched to read this! Congrats, Penny, on being such a good mom to ALL of your Old Babies!
I can so relate to what you are feeling, too...my Fire Lady, whom I have raised from a foal, turned 25 two weeks ago! It sometimes seems like yesterday that I was scratching her fuzzy little foal butt!
Penny, we need to get together and have a BIG Birthday Party for the kids!
Wonderful, Wonderful, she is well cared for and loved! Blessing to hear good news like this!
I have my first and only broadmare due today!!! with her first foal and she is 5 yrs old, I hope I can send a post like your in 25 years!!!!

Cool. Happy birthday!! My oldest is only 23 and retired from breeding, and loving every minute of being an extremely benevolent, but absolute top dog Head Mare! She counsels the others, puts them in their place, teaches the youngsters, nips at, but doesn't touch, the wayward ones that don't live according to her rules (once! - they always comply the 2nd time). She is ALWAYS the first to eat, but once the others know who's in charge and who gets to eat first, she will share her dinner with them. She teaches them to be calm when things get a little hectic, she always leads and always defends her herd. I've seen her break trail in 3 1/2 feet of snow with either her 'assistant head mare' or my old gelding (when they were alive) keeping the rest of the herd in line behind her.
I love her to death. How could anyone ever ditch a mare like those golden oldies that so many of us have????? You can see Freckles here, just scroll to the bottom of the page to Bidder's Issue. If any are interested enough to go to her pedigree page, the picture there, I just realized, is all out of proportion. I'll have to fix that.
