    Default Arabian-welsh cross ideas

I currently have a well bred arabian mare who is rather small and I am thinking about breeding her to a pony (possibly welsh). is there anyone who has had any success with arab-pony crosses or have any ideas for welsh studs?

    thanks

    Default I have one here

Okay well she is 1/2 Arab, 1/4 Shetland & 1/4 Welsh. I have had her since she was 8 yrs she is 36 this year. Pumpkin was a fantastic pony hunter. 12.05 hhs Chestnut, with a Big star, stripe and snip and two hind socks. Great mover, jumper and conformation. She scored a 99 in a Pony Hunter Classic one year and qualified to go back east to indoors. When I showed her the pony hunters were 3' and pony jumpers wre 3'6" which she did. I will say though as a young pony she was tough but I owe so much to her. She would be perfect and if you got to thinking that you knew what you were doing she would throw something at you. When you had that figured out and you were thinking you were good again she would throw something else at you. She is a great pony to have around and even now she thinks that she rules everything.

I can't help you on who to breed to but I would do an arab/welsh cross in a heart beat. Remember the foal will be super smart though so should make for some entertaining times.

Here is a Welsh/Arab cross that I am sending out to show pony hunter breeding this year. He is 3 yrs old and stands 14hh at the moment. He has a great personality and is a beautiful mover.

I bred a lovely CMK/Davenport Arabian mare to GRP stallion Bodyguard (stands at Highlife farm). She was simply stunning as a foal...beautiful and great movement. She was premium Weser-Ems and the judges and fans favorite! Check out Laurel on my foals page for more info.

While we have had alot of interest in our Weser - Ems stallion Chardonnay from the Arabian breeders (he's quite pretty, and isn't so big as to stress the Arabian mares), they have shown interest in several Weser - Ems pony stallions. Many of these stallions are predominantly dressage oriented, but they sure can jump - Chardonnay for instance scored a '10' for jumping in Germany! The German Riding Ponies crossed with Arabian mares make a really great result...!

I am in the process of hopefully doing this myself

I have come down to two possible stallions..

either Wedderlie Mardi Gras - who BTW his owner posts here

    http://www.welshponies.com/

or the bay pony on this page:

    http://www.glenhavenwelsh.com/section_a_welsh.htm

I do not think I can go wrong either way

Depending on the size of your mare and what you want to create I love Blue Who though he is not full Welsh, I also love Ridley who is a Weser Em sport pony. Both are totally different and for different purposes

I LOVE the Welsh x Arab cross, and it was what I had before we had the purebred ponies -- and what eventually prompted me to seek out the purebreds. They are the most wonderful combination of both breeds, as they compliment each other so well. I think that you just cannot go wrong with this cross!!! It is one of my all time favorites!!!!!!!

    How about this guy:

    WELSH
ALVESTA PICASSO ($325) Arabian mares only. 12.3H (Section B). USEF leading Pony Hunter Sire list for four consecutive years. Multiple Supreme Champion and Sport Pony Grand Championships. Sire of Champion Welsh Ponies and Sport Ponies, including wins at the Washington International, HITS, Wellington, RMI Ocala, Biltmore, Upperville, Warrenton, Lexington National, and Zone Finals. Get featured in Practical Horseman. www.DaventryFarms.com

He is offerred at half price through a program to raise money for the Arabian Sport Horse Nationals. His regular fee is $650, but he is available here for $325. I believe the stallion owner also offers a $5000 award to a pony that wins Champion at the Pony Finals and $1000 for a win at Devon.

You can read more about the program, and purchase the breeding (LFG) at www.SHNpayback.com

    Thumbs up

I love the arab/welsh cross. All of our pony hunters in the 70s/80s were of this cross. In the 90s I added the TB blood in for the 3 way cross. That is my personal favorite. I would love to have a nice arab mare to breed to my welsh stallion. Best of luck!

You WILL need a friend to keep your head on straight... He is the cutest little thing you'll ever see... you will want to pack him up and take him home with you in the backseat of your car! But then again all of Glenhaven's ponies and cobs are super, super nice! I really want to breed my Arab mare to their buckskin stallion Glenhaven Jordie!
