Generally speaking, when do foals usually get diarrhea? I heard it is at some point when the mares milk changes?
According to my vet, foals get diarrhea with the first flush of hatching parasites, which coincides with the timing on the mare's foal heat. By deworming the mare within 12 hours of foaling, we have GREATLY reduced the number of foals that get scours. I just had one with a very mild case last year, and that was all.
We don't feed our foals any grain. When they are tall enough to get into the mare's feeders (which are very high) they can share the grain. Under 3 months they don't have the enzymes in their stomachs to process feed - except for special foal products.
We've never had any foals that didn't thrive on mare's milk, good hay and good pasture until they are over 3 months of age.
