Default New Forum Rules? Maybe? Maybe Not??

In the event the BB goes forward (and I hope it does) I would be so happy if some changes were made.

Firstly, the name of the forum. It's not just "Sport" horses that folks post about, but breeding in general, so I'd like the name to be changed to the Breeding Forum.

Secondly, I think as breeders we SHOULD be able to congratulate and "brag" about our babies, stallions, etc. It's our blood, sweat and tears that we put into our farms, and I think we should be able to talk about it.

Are there any changes you would like to see?

Not trying to be rude but, then post the news on your own website like many of us do. Initially, when the COTH put the brag rule up, I was a bit disappointed brags were no longer allowed. After venturing to a few of the other BB's that some of the breeders switched over too so they could brag, I instantly got sick and tired of seeing post after post after post of the same stallion owners posting countless photos of foals and bragging about breeding to x number of mares, etc., etc. The posts were endless and was overkill and, in my opinion, not worth staying on those boards!! To be honest, I was previously interested in breeding to several of those stallions or recommended them to others and I won't ever do it again! I'm happy coming to the COTH and seeing a clean board.

It would be nice if, say a stallion who does well at the 100-day test, etc. could have an announcement on the COTH BB but, regular farm news and foal news should be left on a Stallion Owners own website...in my opinion!

I'd be happy to see the rule changed, but you should know the history of how it came to be in the first place.

The "no brag" rule had its genesis in the COTH management, not Erin. They did not want to allow what they saw as in effect free advertising that might take away from their paid ad revenues. Erin and the moderators were required to enforce that rule, and tried to do so as narrowly as they could. Unfortunately some people looked for ways around it with posts that were not-so-hidden ads, which led others to complain that people were being allowed to break the rule with those posts. The moderators (including myself when I was the moderator of Sport Horse Breeding) tried to hit a happy medium, allowing the "look at my new baby" and "congratulations to X for her stallion's big win" posts, but that just led to more complaints from both sides. Since no happy medium could be found, eventually it spiraled to the complete "no brag" rule. Believe me, it wasn't what anyone wanted.

So changing the no brag rule (and virtually any other rule, the vast majority of which came down from on high) would require changing the minds of the COTH management, not just getting a new administrator or new moderators.

I totally agree, if you breed and show, you would like to let others know about your creation. While for some this is a brag (So what parent do you know that doesn't brag about their children?) for others this is showing pride in their creation. I don't have children to brag about, just my horses! Sure I post it on my web site, but I like to "talk" about it on a BB too. Sometimes the feed back is helpful.

Yes, I think all of that have web sites post things there, but since we're in a community of like minded folks here, it's so neat to hear and see about our fellow breeders under one roof (so to speak).

I agree with Daventry. Seeing all the brag threads on other boards has really made me appreciate not having them here. It's nice having discussions that aren't buried under Yay for Me posts.

I would like to see the "brag" posts permitted again. I have always thought that if you don't like the brag posts, it's easy, just don't read them. Yes, some people are excessive, and there are certain posters whom I simply never open their threads on other BBs because I know they will be another tedious brag, ad nauseam, about their horse, but I find many people's "brags" to be quite useful. There have been several stallions that I now would consider using that I might have never given a second glance to before I saw the gorgeous babies they were producing posted here. I like the baby threads and would like to see them come back. I enjoy seeing what other breeders and other stallions are producing. And I enjoy reading about real accomplishments--show results, inspection results, etc.-- by other breeder's horses.

Another thing I would like to see permitted is discussions about technologies that we all use to promote our horses. I was sorry to see the discussion about Adobe Premiere shut down as being "not horse related" I suppose, because I was wondering the same thing. And I love it when people discuss the best cameras and video cameras for taking photos or videos of our youngsters. As a breeder that is VERY useful information to me and I think it IS horse related. It is not as is we are talking about the weather or the latest movie we saw, we are discussing essential tools any breeder uses as much as they use Regumate.

As a stallion owner, it is nice to get the free promo, but it is also nice to know there is a board to go to that is promo free, so I totally respect the COTH policy,

I can see allowing one running brag thread,, or one for " Big Wins" (and maybe another for miscellaneous brags- double posting prohibited)... they will not clutter the board then. But then there would probably be a train wreck on this thread too at some point and it would be shut down, deservedly so.

I do not think it is fun to sort through 50 threads of "Fluffy won his first blue ribbon , there were two in the class.." for that one educational topic.

No thanks. I can click on links to find out who the brag-deserving horses are. Isn't that enough free advertisement? I come here to learn about sporthorse breeding, which is what I expect from readers of a sporthorse magazine. Which is not to say that the trials and tribulations of getting a reining mare in foal are of no interest to me -- they are. But anyways.

    No. Not particularly.

It's the same ones who always take that extra inch/mile, too.

At best it's a way of weeding out who you WOULDN'T wish to deal with, no matter how nice their stallion.

    Default brag free!

I vote brag free. Too many important threads get lost in the endless bragging threads.

Maybe give the braggarts a separate forum?

Adding, I figure the signature line is plenty of free advertising. If we like what you've got to say, we can check out your farm, and if you're an obnoxious fool we can remember to avoid you like the plague. Works both ways.

The bragging gets abused. If what was being talked about was winning at AA shows then OK but it's way too much about foal inspections.etc.
Impossible to separate what's real so why allow it.
And can't you still post brags on the H/J,Eventing or Dressage forums on this BB?
I always wonder who you are trying to impress. Most of the posters here seem to be breeders not buyers.

And don't most of the ones that want to brag post on other BB's that allow it? I think some of those BB's even have Bragging Forums.LOL

I sincerely hope that the "brag" postings are never again permitted.

If folks want to do that then they need to set up their own blogs and not waste valuable forum space here boring the pants off folks who just want to "socialise" on a BB

I agree... although it did seem more fun here when bragging was allowed--it really got abused and was very nauseating. Especially when the braggarts "following" gang of fellow braggers kept it going and going and going....
Maybe we need some rules...for bragging-- like there has to be more than 3 in the class, and it has to be a AA horse show, and no bragging about how many breedings in a given year, especially when half of them are given away. But then again--rules do not work here so--I guess we better leave it alone & the way it is.
I do agree with Va Bred--the forum would be better named Breeding Forum.

Perhaps it is a good idea to add a bragging forum.. then those that cant get over themselves can go wild there

I for one LOVE to see the babies and out of what and by who.. As a small time breeder this helps me to see what the get looks like from a vast amount of horses / mares..
Maybe , there can be a thread that is dedicated to that and only that.. .. A picture of a foal with a statement of what it is out of and by.. Is that bragging? or educating.. ??

I think if bragging is not allowed in the breeding forum than it should not be allowed on the BB in general. I do think it is a bit unfair that anyone who is not a breeder can brag about their show, ribbon, test, new horse, etc...on a horse they might have for sale even....but if it's a breeder wanting to share something very similar, we are labeled as self promoters and advertisers. Sometimes, we like to share things also and we are excited about the birth of a new foal we've waited on for 11 months (or longer) or a new mare we bought, the sale of a young horse overseas, a baby we raised and trained ourselves, or great achievement of our stallion. Yes sometimes the horses are for sale but the same can be said about brags from non breeders. I guess what I'm saying is that there is a double standard to some degree and that to me is not fair.

I will admit that some of the bragging got out of hand but some of the stuff that was not allowed was pretty nitpicky also. We all knew who the abusers were and I think they did themselves more harm than good with their endless self promotion. Perhaps "excessive" bragging could be targeted instead of all brags?

I do agree with the name change also for the forum. It might be more inviting to other breeders and encourage more open topics.

The forum was named Sport Horse Breeding because that is what the section of the print magazine that deals with breeding is called. The individual forums were meant to track the different subjects covered by the magazine.
