Thanks, that's a lot of great info! How soon can the horses be turned out again after using Roundup? And what do we do in the late fall-early spring when the grass doesn't appear to be growing but...

I had a monster of an 18h TB who could eat like no horse I have ever seen and keeping weight on him was still an issue, even when he wasn't in work.

We've had our property a year and have had two horses on it during that time, one who is dry-lotted due to metabolic issues and one who is out during the day and in the dry lot at night to manage his...

This is fun! I would say that my gelding is Neal Caffrey (played by Matt Bomer) from White Collar...gorgeous, unpredictable, probably essentially good at heart but you're never exactly sure what...
  6. Putting weight back on a founder-prone horse...

I have a gelding who foundered mildly in the past (it was caught before there was any rotation) but I am super anxious that it will happen again. He has been on the vet-recommended lifestyle changes...

    Because's he's not 100% TB, he's 1/4 WB.

Fyi, the WB is older but not dramatically more experienced because up until recently he was a jumper, so dressage is still relatively new for him as well.

    Choosing between 2 horses

I have narrowed my horse search down to 2 horses, and would love an opinion on which horse you guys think is a better deal.

Horse 1 is a unraced TB, still a little green but being ridden by an...

I'm actually less concerned with that now, I have done my research on the seller and spoken with the hauling companies about how they identify the horses they are picking up. I just read a horror...

Also, follow-up question, is it okay to haul long-distance in the summer, even in their fancy trailers? It says they're well ventilated but I do not want him getting heat exhaustion!
  12. Buying a horse and hauling cross country

I may have finally found a horse after a pretty long search. He's a young horse and hasn't been hauled long distances and will need to be hauled 13+ hours in order to arrive here.

    Does anyone...
  13. Wanting to learn sidesaddle, but there are no instructors nearby...

Not sure exactly where to put this, so I'll put it here (I assume there are probably more sidesaddle riders here than the other boards?). I am really interested in learning to ride sidesaddle. Where...

  16. It looks like a skunk crawled up under the hay pallets and died...now what?

This was the secondary hay storage barn and we don't know how long ago it happened. It smells, but not horribly. The hay is stacked up high, filling the whole barn. Is it all ruined?

I rode in shorts back when my BO allowed it, and at home in summer. On especially warm days I'll hose myself down before riding so my clothes and ponytail are wet, and the horse as well. My heat...

  20. Is it okay to be mixing a ration balancer with a regular feed?

I have my QH gelding, who previously foundered, in a large dry lot with hay and a ration balancer to substitute grass (Empower Balance). He's been on it for a long time with no issues until this...
