My trainer convinced me to go the rated route as I wasn't challenged at the schooling shows any longer.

I agree with being patient and having a firm budget. The right horse always has a way of finding you as long as you don't get in a rush.
There are two trainers in our area that do this also. Many of the horses are lame for months at a time, but many are not. The owners and trainers don't seem to mind.

Nothing beats a good trainer.
A friend is looking for a Warmblood type eventer for her teen daughter and her trainer mentioned Clydesdale crosses may be a good and possibly less expensive option.

What if you both started to board your pets elsewhere? Maybe the respect in the relationship would return.

What a great idea. I'd worry about roots growing under the arena footing.
Personally, I love open arenas, with shade within a close walking distance.
There is nothing wrong with riding at a walk or trot till you regain confidence, build the rider-horse relationship, and get into better shape.
