I'm not sure where in the UK you are but if you are in an area where there is a lot of sailing, you might want to try winter sailing gloves - I prefer the three finger gloves.

It can be caused by a trapped nerve. The pain makes the horse sweat excessively in a very localised area. The sweat then bleaches the coat when the sun gets on it.
Recommend a visit from a physio.
