I've always wanted a mule. Periodically I scandalize my friends by threatening to breed one of my Trakehner mares to a mammoth jack
-
Yep, you can do pretty much anything except for breed shows with a unpapered horse. So have fun! :)

When my mare needed her eye removed, I really wanted it done standing, but unfortunately she was already at a vet hospital because I decided to have a conjunctival graft done to try and save her eye,...

My 6 year old mare changes shape like crazy, too. We also went through three saddles in the past year and then changed again recently, but thankfully I think for #4 we can go back to one of the...

I had the same question as Barcardi. When I was growing up, my grandfather had an apple orchard. Someone else owned and maintained several bee hives on his property. Since they were great...

Don't tell my herd that. If anything "scary" happens, my sheep run to flock with the horses, and if it's a coyote or barn cat or something like that that spooks the sheep, my mares will run it off if...

This is an incredibly frustrating time to be laid up. Spring, just getting into the swing of things and planning events to attend and then... nope, scratch all those plans. It stinks. I'm also on...

Interestingly, it was actually my calmest, least neurotic, most laid back horse that had the most trouble with living alone. And the mare who likes being turned out alone is totally neurotic. Go...

As usual, I think it depends on the horse.
I had one that absolutely could not live alone or he'd get dejected and grumpy, and go off feed within about two weeks. Probably ulcers. This would...

Yes, this, absolutely. And there's no sense in taking unsafe shortcuts just becase the horse is cheap - the vet bill costs the same on a $500 horse as a $5000 horse.
Plus the classic "There's no...

I also had a cat that was terrified of ceiling fans. Apparently it's not all that unusual. Never did manage to cure him of it, but since we only had them in the bedrooms, I didn't try that hard. He'd...

Honestly, I'm not very nice. My mare is another one of those horses that was purchased for a song because she broke her previous owner's back. So the last time someone asked if they could come over...

I mow my pasture with a riding lawn mower all the time, and have for years, without a problem. On the highest setting, but I do put it down from the park position. I only have a couple of easy...

Yikes. Only if it was some kind of immediate emergency evacuation situation. And even then, I'd expect to be notified as soon as reasonably possible.
-
This was going to be my suggestion as well. I used to board at a stable that had a few tiny paddocks that served as basically outdoor stalls, and horses seemed to be way happier there than actually...

Same here.
ETA: And somehow I missed the date on the original post, and the post pointing out that the thread was from 2006, until after I'd posted.

No joke! I used to work in carrot breeding, and since carrots are insect pollinated, we had a sack of fly pupae delivered to us every week for a good portion of the growing season. So someone out...

This has been my experience as well.

In addition to buckets, I also keep a couple of sturdy ~5 gallon jugs filled with water so I know I'll always be able to get some.
Mine are kind of like these:...

Not me, though I could totally see myself doing that. I once fell flat on my face in a halter class. Thankfully in halter they're only judging the horse, so Stan (my gelding) still came in second.

I generally accept friend requests from people I'm at least aquainted with, and send them out to family or people I've considered friends at some point in my life (even if we've lost touch).
For...

I just avoid mirrors after riding, so I can slum around in ignorant bliss. Problem solved.
-
I personally wouldn't, since it has a base of "molasses solids," which around here seems to mean that my draft gelding will bite chunks out of it and try to consume as much as he possibly can.

I buy the loose TM salt. Same kind as you buy in block form, only with a salt shaker texture instead. You can easily put it in a bucket or something to offer it free choice.

Are people really spraying their alfalfa fields much?
Doesn't seem to happen much around here, but then again, hay prices are low in this area, so there'd have to be a pretty significant threat to...
