SLC, this is by no means a misconception. It's the means you are training with whether you know it or not, because negative reinforcement (timed release of an aversive stimulus) is the way dressage...

Well, I would never say for sure it's neurological, but I would put it high on the list to investigate. Mild deficits are not at all obvious even to experienced horsepeople, and in fact masquerade...

I have to agree with George, I'd look for something neurological.
I had a horse w/mild neurological deficit, and one of the signs (in hindsight) occurred during a shoeing. The farrier was holding...

Better to practice till perfect at home. Hanging out on the side of the interstate is extremely dangerous. Don't do it unless you have no other choice.
Last time I had a flat on a 5 lane...

Don't Icelandic horses eat fish?

I don't think it's such a bad idea as some others here do. In fact now is the time to pick up things that will increase in value, HOWEVER, you have to be prepared and able to hold them if it turns...

Sorry to hear this. I found ANOTHER HORSEMANSHIP to be immensely helpful when I read it many years ago, full of concepts which had not been clear to me before.
-
Well I can tell you one thing, I've seen plenty of stick-thin riders who were stiff as boards banging on the horse's back and hanging on the reins, so it must not just be the fluffy ones. ;)

Just got back today from a schooling show today where we took my trainer's greenie that is for sale. He's a nice young gelding, this was his first show and he was a bit scared but coping well.

Hi--having spent the past year looking for a horse, and being an analytical sort of person, I've thought quite a bit about adverts and videos and what works and what doesn't.
Without seeing them,...

Great job OP!
The only thing I'd add is that while you are working on forward, you can work on the backing out too. Couple steps one way, couple steps the other. (Only on cue though, pressure...

I don't know that anyone actually WANTS to buy a 6 figure horse. But if you have certain requirements in quality, experience, training, soundness and talent, each requirement makes the field of...

I have big kudos to the OP for not being a wishy-washy naive first-time buyer who accepts whatever the "authorities" tell her is the way things are supposed to be done.
That's just how a whole lot...
-
Well I'll take a contrary view. (To some extent.)
If you are going to pay 6 figures for this horse, that's one heck of a lot of money. You deserve to feel that it's the right horse for you...

The things that have helped me with free-floating anxiety have been getting the right ratio of fatty acids (omega 3/omega 6, won't go into details as you can find it all over the internet) and the...

Tail clamping and resisting manipulation are signs of normal neurological reflex, whereas a limp tail you can do anything with is a sign of neurological deficit, possible spinal cord damage.

This really made me smile!
Woohoo, no fight! Great work, you must have done a good job of the in-hand. And conditioning the cluck gave you a bridge to U/S, great idea.
You should be able to...

Yes! A simple black skull and crossbones on a white pad with black piping would be so hysterical.
I think the horse must be black.
Please, someone do this.

That sounds like it's on the right track.

Just FYI, Andrew McLean is well worth investigating. He uses behavioral learning theory and has a very detailed and consistent method for teaching horses the aids.
The brief post above is not...

A better ratio of fatty acids can help inflammation overall (though it's not a cure for PF, but good for joints in general).
The book INFLAMMATION NATION has a good overview of how high doses of...

Same here, blank screen. Of course my computer fried itself the other day and I'm on my old laptop, wondering if I need some new flash or something.
-
Two things. First, does he actually know the aids to transition? Are you SURE? Are you really really really SURE? Did you take the time to teach him that a light squeeze means go from halt to...
-
Keep us posted. If he is neurological then keep in mind that his recovery will take awhile, even if it's from EPM. You can get rid of the protozoa but the nerve damage remains and will take awhile...

This makes me think of a black 7 year old boy from a small town in east Texas I met last year. He was staying temporarily with a family I know because his mother had been arrested for drugs. There...
