I use my canister vacuum. The carpet attachment (with the rollers) does a really good job removing dirt and dried sweat. Periodically, I hose it off and place it over a chair outside to dry.

Have you treated for sand yet? Check with your vet, but maybe some Sand Clear would help.

I split the spring shots into two visits (which includes the yearly vaccinations).
Spring #1: West Nile, 3-way (EEE/WEE/Tetanus), Calvenza Influenza/Rhino EHV
Spring #2: Rabies and Strangles...

I'm a new, older (38), and a very nervous rider with my first horse, so I spend a lot of time just hanging out with him!
I try to ride once a week at minimum, because if I go any longer I start to...

I know it looks like a dent, but my gelding gets them and his mask fits perfectly. I think it is probably just the hair pressed down, much like the mark a dog or cat collar makes.
Plus, the...

I never wanted children either! A couple of years ago (I'm 38 now), I started getting weird urges... I got a horse instead, my lifelong dream, and I could not be happier! I am WAY too selfish to...

Wow! I'm glad my horse is barefoot. I'm in NorCal and I pay $40 for a trim.

As needed, which appears to be every nine months or so for my gelding. At nine months, he has moderate hooks on his molars...

Also, colleges and universities like to have out of state students because it makes them look good. I went to grad school out of state on purpose, because I thought I would have a better chance of...
-
Can you apply to grad school at the same school as the vet school you want to get into? That might be worthwhile, especially if you can get into a related program! This might provide connections...

Is there a website for the rescue that took them? I would still like to send a small donation.
Thanks!

If you can afford board, farrier care, vaccinations, and all of the basics on an ongoing basis, I think you should get him.
I don't have an emergency fund for my horse (although I am working on...

I'm pretty new here, but you look like you have been here a while and appear to be a real person, so I would also donate a small amount to their care if you can accept Paypal.

Well, about two years ago, I decided to take riding lessons because I could finally afford it. I never rode as a child, but owning a horse was a childhood dream! I was up to trotting, happily, when...

Hi,
I don't know where you are located, but I assume you board? You mentioned that their cost is almost as much as your rent...
Maybe you could find a less expensive boarding situation?

Thanks for the info! My gelding has this, and my vet explained that it was a skin condition (overproduction of cells), but told me to use an anti-fungal shampoo anyways. I have not tried brushing...

OMG! I am actually HAPPY to see this!
OK, I'm 99% sure that I DID NOT do this, but 1% not sure...
I just got home from the barn. I had my horse all fed, cleaned up, and fly sprayed...
I go...

I don't live where there is a lot of lightning, so I am going to ask a REALLY DUMB question... If the horses were stalled, and had rubber stall mats, would that help?
-
I use it to gauge my gelding's mood, actually. He likes to pretend he is spooking (a lot of the time), and gets kind of jumpy when tied. I figure if it's out, he's faking.
-
Can you just put another horse in with him?
I'm in Norcal, but we have a similar issue. Stalls run $400-1200 a month with tiny attached runs, or I can "pasture" board with uncapped t-posts,...

I just use about 3/4 of a pound of soaked, pelleted hay to feed my gelding supplements. He loves it! It's his daily snack, and soaking it provides a little extra water (plus he had minor issues...
-
It's a skin condition. Overproduction of cells. Cannon keratosis. My gelding would die before he would "splash" himself and he still has it. Manageable, but not curable.
-
I don't know about the reaction to the medication, but acting "high" from oats or feed could mean he does not need the oats or supplemental feed. My gelding goes nuts if he gets ANYTHING extra (even...
-
It's called cannon keratosis.
My vet said that people used to think it was from mud/urine/etc. but it's really an overproduction of skin cells that is localized to the hind cannons. It can be...
