My observation, also. So make sure you like the looks of all the grandparents. :-)

I've had mares make very nice babies with frozen and then start reacting to it. And when my guys had a reaction, they ended up with uterine infections which cost me a bundle to clear up. The mares...

Yes, I would say that hoof neglect is an issue open to debate. I did look at photos of seized horses on facebook. As far as their feet are concerned, I didn't see one that yelled out neglect.
And...

I, too, am shocked by the $25000 figure. As much as I love the ponies, I don't see that I could spend that much on a single horse.
If I, as a private person, have to make those kinds of calls,...

Huh? The suggestion was that she might do something scary to people who came onto her farm to help with the horses.
-
Perhaps you should take that up with AARP.
Just what do you folks think is elderly? I believe you can still start collecting social security at 62 or 65.
-
Oh come on.... this is an elderly lady... what do you really think she's going to do?
-
Are you telling me that that is typical.... ?
-
wrong.
sometimes mares develop problems during pregnancy. once there's an infection, it's unlikely you'll save the foal.
-
If you're paying $2500/month, I'd be happy to get into the rehab business. It certainly pays better than breeding.
-
Or, perhaps more likely, she lost the foal because of the uterine infection.
-
Well, duh.
That was the point in saying that some breeders might be willing to take a gamble.
-
This was pretty much what I was trying to say - you said it better. :-)

OK. First, there's no evidence that the owner was starving horses to death. It's entirely possible that some of those very thin horses were older and just couldn't for one reason or another (cancer...
-
Not a judgment I can make without seeing pics of all the horses. I've seen a few select photos showing what I'm guessing are the skinniest of the older ones. I've seen CBC video footage of young...

Yes, you understand my position. I don't want to spend a bunch of money in this economy. But I do have a couple of empty stalls and plenty of pasture. That means I can afford to take in horses that...

No, I never said it was unacceptable to seize horses. I do think it should be a last resort. You've got rescues now with approx. 150 horses that say they don't have the wherewithall to support those...
-
First, my point about shedding was in response to someone who said, mine have shed out so hers should have, too.
Second, I wouldn't have responded to a dispersal sale ad (and I have recently seen...

I;m minutes away from the Delaware Memorial Bridge - my weather is comparable to what DC gets within a degree or two. It was over 80 the last few days and yet my older horses haven't completely shed...
-
OK, so where were THEY before the county and rescues came in to round up the ponies and take them elsewhre?
-
OK so you're doing fine. In this case we've got someone who apparently was doing quite well as a breeder and managing to sell her foal crops over the years. The horse market - along with the economy...
-
Well, apparently the local horse community didn't do st that in this case. And I very much doubt they would in my neck of the woods. In case you didn't notice the economy has been on the skids for...
-
Well, I'm in NJ and not everyone here has shed out - and they all had blankets on during the winter. My 23-year-old mare still has quite a bit of shedding to do. I'm sure she'll get there by end of...
-
The babies I saw videos of looked FINE.
I know people around here with horses with rain rot. The horses have shelters, but often choose not to use them. Wanna take those ponies away, too????

Take if from me (a long time breeder of Arabians and Arab-warmblood crosses), the Canterbury herd has some lovely horses in it that any Arabian breeder would be happy to own.
As a breeder who...
