How devastating to all who knew and loved him. :(
RIP

Congrats to Matt P. -- he is an amazing rider!!! I knew him when he was 10 years old and doing walk trot!!

Long before my time, but NASHUA.
Won Preakness and Belmont, was second to Swaps in Derby, but went on to beat him in a match race.
(Of course, I am partial to him, as he was my mare's...

Was Nashua known for soundness? I have a 31-year-old (yes, 31!) Nashua grand-daughter who did eventing, "A" hunters, etc. for years and is sounder than many others half her age.

Definitely Secretariat's triple crown wins. I purchased a video of them recently and was awestruck.

I can completely relate, because as a child I saw my favorite horse, Timely Writer, fatally break down at the Jockey Club Gold Cup. I was devastated. It took me many, many years to be able to watch...

I think he looks quite handsome for an elderly gentleman! Aging happens to us all, and while it is not pretty, it is a fact of life.
My own TB is 30 and I still think she is gorgeous. :)

Great thread! :)
Names I cannot stand include: Scrappy T, Judge Smells, Devils Bag.
Favorites include: Timely Writer, Secretariat, War Admiral, Buckpasser, Spend A Buck, Appleaday (my mare's...

What was Nashua like? I have a 30-year-old granddaughter and she has always been very feisty (which keeps her going!).
How about War Admiral?

Sending jingles for Avery!

I won't tell others what to do, but I never get on a horse without a helmet. I knew someone -- a lifelong rider -- who died from a head injury incurred from a fall off of an otherwise quiet mount....

I like Scat Daddy, Street Sense, and Nobiz.

Timely Writer.
I was a kid when he broke down. I will never forget him. :(

It definitely depends on the individual situation.
I have seen some people wait way too long to make the decision, while the horse is deteriorating for months or over a year. I have also known of...

Thanks RiverBend -- that is scary stuff. :(

Any updates on this? Have they revealed the names of the farms where the horses are so that others can take precautions?
-
FoggyClouds, please check your PMs. :)

In 1985, we sold my large pony, Irish Spring, as I had sadly outgrown him. He was a 14.1+ hand fleabitten grey Connemara (registered name Paddy Bond - but we never had his papers). He was about 15 at...

Yes, I left very shortly after that comment was made!! Said trainer eventually lost all clients. It's funny, because several times, when the subject of past trainers comes up and I mention that I...

I don't think anyone has an issue (or at least I don't think they do!) with folks selling horses or finding them suitable homes.
The thing that irks me is when someone buys a horse, works them and...
