EDITED to add: I have a horse who has a lovely soft mouth. Problem is, he wants to drop beind the bit; I am looking for something he will lean into, and which is still strong enough so the rider can get him to listen.
He is a jumper, so unconventional bets are fine.

A Wilson is considered a pretty harsh bit due to the jaw squeezing aspect of the floating rings. Often used for driving for that reason. With a bit of luck you've already tried one on your soft mouthed horse tho!Quote:

For what you describe, it's not the bit, it's the hands that use it. A good, alert rider can keep a horse from dropping back before it happens.
Why get complicated? Simple snaffle does the job more often than not. If you want him to lean on it, use a Mullen mouth snaffle.
But it's more a rider problem than a horse one, IME.
Another vote for something other than the scourrier-- the mouthpiece for those is usually squared off and quite sharp-- my soft-mouthed horse who also dropped behind the bit was hugely offended by it.

I have such a horse; soft, and will go behind the vertical with pulling, but a bit of a jerk and needs to be set back occasionally. I use the shortest shank Tom Thumb with a nice fat snaffle mouthpiece and padded curb chain, and 99% of the time, the curb rein is draped, but ready for action on my little finger.
