I don't get TCM. I just get a lot of channels I don't want.

That last One Reel Wonders, Stars on Horseback is a sham. It mostly shows film clips of stars on horses, not stars that own horses, like James Cagney. I was a bit disappointed.

My favorite vintage classic "horse" film is Lonely Are The Brave with Kirk Douglas. He plays a cowboy in the 50's seeing his countryside & lifestyle encroached upon by development.
His horse is a gorgeous flaxen maned Andalusian/Paso Fino (forgive me, I mean more "type" than breed here) who almost steals the show in any scene with Kirk.
The horse's screen name is "Whiskey".

Alas one of the worst racing films has to be the above flix with Shirley Temple and how the true story of Seabiscuit is reworked. If you've read the Hillenbrand book and/or seen the 2003 version with Jeff Bridges and Tobey Maguire you'd be in for shock. The actual footage used is the only upside ;)

I wish that they included from 1951 "Boots Malone" with Bill Holden (as jockey agent Boots Malone) which is, in my view, one of the best done "racing" movies. The black and white film aired on Turner before was rarely seen due to Hollywood blacklisting of writer Milton Holmes who sued for Columbia Pictures for $1 million for "for not publicizing and distributing the film according to the contract."

Maybe someday they'll air, for fun, Richard Dryfuss in (1989) "Let It Ride" :)

Yeah, I loved Boots Malone, although I could enjoy watching Bill Holden snoring in a chair.
It was a fun day of silly horse racing films, one of the best was a horse that would only win if he heard this particular little girl's voice. Shots of her screaming from a convertible as it drove alongside the track during the big race was priceless fun!

Never heard of Let It Ride, but the idea of roly poly NYC Jew Dreyfuss on a horse is hilarious. Especially if it's a show horse or bronco.

One of my patients at the SNF was watching "Story of Seabiscuit" yesterday when I picked her up for therapy. I hated asking her to turn off the TV! I will be bludgeoned with a remote control someday, I know it. ;)

They should have played National Velvet (or International Velvet even though it isn't a racing film) I miss watching those movies - I used to watch them every weekend :lol:
