Yes on the tranquilizer! One of our best/favorite mares turned into the mare from hell a few years ago. Hand bred she bucked...not kicked...so hard...

If you can handle a new mare and foal...that's the way I'd go. Horses ARE herd animals and I think babies do best with playmates. They will survive...
