How to get more men to compete in equestrian sports

Time and time again I hear the question “How can we get more men to compete in equestrian sports” well I have the answer as least as far as eventing is concerned. Get rid of the braiding requirement! The fact is most male eventers possess all the requisite skills needed to compete successfully with the exception of braiding and this lack of braiding skills is debilitating. It reduces the fiercest male competitor to an impotent fool forced to meander the show grounds begging braider after braider for their services. It’s pathetic and without doubt the number one reason that there are so few men in our sport.
I recently competed in a horse trial and noted the anxiety on the faces of my fellow male competitors as they frantically searched for braiding help. Throwing fists full of cash to even the most incompetent braider the anxiety turned to relief only when the cursed braids were finally in place. The irony is that the braids, which cost us men our competitive self-respect, are only of use for the few minutes of dressage after which they served no purpose other than the unintended one of making our noble and courageous horses look like delicate dandies.
I understand that braiding is a long standing tradition and I am a huge supporter of equestrian tradition but the time has come for braiding to go the way of the powdered wig. Braids look silly, cost big bucks, serve no purpose, and requires a skill that men do not possess. So if the goal is to get more men involved in equestrian sports, the solution is simple, get rid of braiding. Then stand back as the number of male competitors goes through the roof.

I just got the following from a friend of mine, and I thought you might be able to put it to good use.

Tick Removal:
> Spring is here and the ticks will soon be showing their heads.
> Here is a good way to get them off you, your children,
> or your pets. Give it a try.
>
> Please  forward to anyone with children, hunters or dogs;
> or anyone who even steps outside in summer!
>
> A School Nurse has written the info below--good enough
> to share--and it really works!
>
> "I had a pediatrician tell me what she believes is the best
> way to remove a tick. This is great because it works in
> those places where it's sometimes difficult to get to with
> tweezers: between toes, in the middle of a head full of
> dark hair, etc."
>
> "Apply a glob of liquid soap to a cotton ball. Cover the tick
> with the soap-soaked cotton ball and swab it for a few
> seconds (15-20); the tick will com e out on its own and be
> stuck to the cotton ball when you lift it away.
> This technique has worked every time I've used it
> (and that was frequently), and it's much less traumatic
> for the patient and easier for me.."
>
> "Unless someone is allergic to soap, I can't see that this
> would be damaging in any way. I even had my doctor's
> wife call me for advice because she had one stuck to her
> back and she couldn't reach it with tweezers. She used
> this method and immediately called me back to say,
> "It worked!"
>
> Please pass on. Everyone needs this helpful hint

My 9 year old has been barefoot her whole life, and has always been pasture kept. I have never had a reason to shoe, never any major soundness problems.

Her pasture is normally dry, but we do get a lot of rain in May and June where she's kept. Last year we flooded, but so far this year it's been quite dry. Her pasture is wet in one low corner, but everywhere else is dry, and she is never standing in moisture unless she feels like playing in the mud...

Even last year when it was super wet I had no problems with her feet, no thrush or anything. What I am noticing within the last couple weeks is that her soles have become very soft. Small rocks easily become embedded around the edge of the sole and have to be dug out with a pick. She's come up head-bobbing lame twice since late April from embedded rocks. This has never happened before.

I usually have no trouble hacking her out on the road, but there is so much gravel out there I don't want to make her sore.

If her environment were wet I would move her, but it's not....
Can anything else cause this? Anything I can treat it with?

I've seen these around at clinics and stuff and would love to know where I can get my hands on some! I'm really wanting to buy some thinner saddle pads (between an AP and a baby pad). I'm hoping to buy a bunch and monogram them in bulk. Just plain, white with trim or solid colors, etc. Does anyone have any suggestions? They must be out there somewhere! I like them with my half pad instead of getting the super bulky ones but instead of just a baby pad which slips around. I think they look really sharp!
