View Full Version : ANother Prayer Needed for my colt Timmy - WE LOST HIM

I posted a while back about this colt, at four weeks he apparently got an intestinal infection, we pulled him thru that but then apprently developed ulcers. We were trying to get him started on gastro guard BUT he has been refluxing and won't keep anything down at this point, the weird thing is he would get bad then get completely well, then relapse. TO make this terribly LONG story shorter, we put in an IV line tonight and muzzled him to try and calm his stomach down and stop the reflux so we can treat with gastro guard. Hopefully after 24 hours we can start treatment and keep it in him. But have to run fluids in him every two hours now around the clock. Of course there is a possibility there is some sort of a congenital intestinal problem, and it is not what we think, but I cannot go with sending him to vet school for anything to find out, just finacially not an option. So we will pray it is ulcers and treat (all signs are pointing to this and bloodwork shows the infection has cleared up). So please pray and jingle for this guy he is truly a fighter. On a happier note our orphan colt is doing fantascially well!

He is holding his own so we are hopeful. If it is not ulcers then it would nearly have to be a congenital problems but all the signs ARE showing ulcers, he grinds his teeth, has intemittent pain, no signs of shock or toxic build up, blood panels are good but show some stress induced signs etc. It is definitely not impaction etc, he has good gut sounds, not in constant pain, just more depressed than anything, no fever. It makes sense that milk would be aggravating his stomach if it was ulcers. My vet is certain it is in upper GI tract.

He is now spiking a low grade fever, 102.4 unfortunately for ulcers has to be on banamine for fever and pain reduction (Which also probably contributed to them to begin with). It's a vicious cycle! But not much else to do. Vet says enteritis and gut inflammation causing the low grade fever so have to keep in control and up fluids to around 400 ml from 300 ml. Also hotter than heck here today (has been most of the week) but he is in a well ventilated stall with a fan. Man this is tough! But so far he is hanging in there. Have managed to get him to keep down some sucralfate (the only thing vet wants him to have by mouth now) to help the stomach inflammation. Praying that by this evening we can try the gastro guard again.

REflux = basically vomiting fluid thru mouth/nose. it was GUSHING out of him. However, he kept the gastroguard down for the most part, a LITTLE bit refluxed. Today he has kept two 20 cc syringes of pedialyte down given a couple hours apart without refluxing so that is good. Still on IV fluids every two hours and obviously he is weak, but doing a bit better this AM. However, I am getting at best an hours sleep at the time at night and really nothing during the day! Don't know how long I can keep this up. And to top it off our orphan is dribbling urine when he urinates thru umbilical, so have to put him on antibiotics as preventative and PRAY it closes on its own! If it isn't one thing its another!

our orphan is dribbling urine when he urinates thru umbilical, so have to put him on antibiotics as preventative and PRAY it closes on its own! If it isn't one thing its another!
Several of our vets have recommended to re-dip the umbilicus in iodine if this happens. Usually 2%, but once we needed to use strong iodine. It fixed the problem in every case within a day or so.
So sorry to hear about the loss of your baby. I pray you have seen the last of the sad times this year.

Yes Fairview we are redipping his umbilical everytime he urinates. Hoping that works, he is on an antibiotic to prevent infection. His only real problem is he doesn't understand how to run and play, we have to hand walk him, trot and canter some, but he doesn't much want to do it. He's a bit weak behind. Getting a small goat today to see if that will work as a companion for him. He drinks formula and LOVES it, and we also are giving him pedialyte which he redily drinks from a bucket for added electrolytes and glucose for energy.

My sincerest condolences on the loss of your little foal. Godspeed Timmy.
A goat or a small pony would be a great companion - we had a small pony that used to babysit our weaned babies and he taught them not to forget their manners either! Best of luck with your orphan baby - I've been there with two at a time and I know how much work it is, but satisfying nonetheless. I hope he turns around quickly and starts to buck and run when he gets his new buddy.
Take care of yourself and see if you can get someone to take a watch - so you can catch up on some much needed sleep.

We got the goat for the orphan and they are doing well together. Hoping he doesn't develop any significant problems although I plan to have vet out first of week to look at the umbilical leak, pull blood and run a blood panel and evaluate him, he is raterh thin in spite of having a HUGE appetite.
