You can buy breedings at reduced prices from MO who bought contracts in auctions but are unable to use them because of losing a mare, etc.

No specific needs... I asked as I have been looking at some young, unproven, or rarely used stallions and noticed that the prices are all around 1200-1600. It seems that SOs would have a smaller stud fee for stallions that have not proven themselves in the breeding shed or production shed... I am sure they are out there but I can't find them.To me it seems like for your stallions first year or until he has proven himself that it would make sense to have a stud fee that would attract enough people to get some nice mares/foals.

Depending on the mare and future plans for the foal, Campesino's stud fee has been reduced to half price for those qualified mares. That would not be under, but right at $900.

well, i guess you should be more specific then.. are you looking for stallions with stud fees under $900 or are you looking for stallions whose grand total including shipping, collection and booking are under $900? if you are looking for the grand total under $900, you will probably have to remove novalis, reputed testamony, and campesino from your list as well!

I will be offering free breedings to quality mares this year (MO's to pay actual cost of collection, shipping, minimal "booking fee" and a container deposit). It's his first year, we are a little late starting (he'll be in my barn by early June) and I want as many quality offspring on the ground next year. He has older Holsteiner "foundation" bloodlines; paternal grandsire Corporal (same grandsire as Capital I), maternal grandsire Fleming, great grand sires Farnese, Marlon, and Ladykiller. If you're interested feel free to e-mail me for more information...sunkissed81081@yahoo.com

I believe young stallions should earn their mark, so I price mine, until they have proven themselves, under your limit of $900 or close to that. Plus I do offer discounts to 'special' mares (all creatures are special of course :D). As a result, my boys do get lots of traffic. I see that as future advertisement (the foals are better advertisement then anything).
Plus I generally do not ask for the stud fee until the mare is confirmed pregnant. People have advised me against that, but so far ALL mare owners have been good about that, so I'm not too concerned.
So Versace B and VanGogh B are available for your price range!

Class.. agreed... I was asking if you by chance know more.. what are the booking and collection fees? The stud fee meets the $900 and that is what I am asking with this thread ... but I was also asking if you knew the other fees for those boys, sorry it came off as them not meeting the $900 fee. Do you have a website for them? I have actually dealt with a few SO that are including the first shipment, waiving booking, etc. which makes it very nice!

It's well into the season and SO pretty much know how many mares they are getting this year. Contact the owners of some stallions you like who may not get much traffic and see if they are willing to work with your budget.
Some will not but you won't know if you don't ask.

Our exquisite TB hunter fellow, Flight Of A Falcon has an introductory fee of $750 as it is his first season at stud. The fee includes the first collection & booking fees, and we offer Performance, Multiple and Returning mare discounts. Pair that with the fact that it's in Canadian dollars, and it's a wonderful opportunity for those hoping to produce a fancy, quality hunter prospect.
He has terrific bloodlines for race and sport. JC/PHR/AQHA registration opportunities, and he's headed for the RPSI inspection up here in August, Canadian Trakehner in October. His collections have proven to be of excellent quality.
As both a mare and stallion owner, I really feel strongly that discounted fees can be of such benefit to both parties, particularly at the beginning of a quality stallion's career.

We stand two fully approved stallions, both produce top scoring premium foals, and both compete and are champions in mutliple disciplines. Our standard fee is broken down in installments and one can breed for as little as $1,050 , no booking fee. Collection and shipping fees are the responsibility of the mareowner. COTOPAXI is approved by the Holsteiner Verband and further in North America by ISR OLD, CWHBA, AWR and AHHA and focused on competing in the Grand Prix ring in Showjumping. RAFFAELLO is approved by the Hanoverian Verband, and further in North America by CSHA, CWHBA, AWR, ISR OLD and the AHS as well registration of foals permited by various other organizations such as GOV based on his 100 day testing and approval in Germany. Raffaello has competed successfully in jumpers and dressage but is competing in Hunter in 2007.
The value of top quality stallions available in North America has never been more feasible and the quality available now is comparable to that anywhere in the world.

Hi Jump
May. 19, 2007, 01:06 AM
I will say that I was breeding 25 years ago and paying higher studfees than are being charged today, and those stallions I paid for back then were lesser stallions than some mentioned here. The Verband approved stallions, such as Showjumper66, Dreamscape Farms and ShowjumpersUSA stand are a fabulous value for the breeders money (even over $900 !). These stallions are not only comparable to the best of Europe, but are further proven with premium foals, competition careers and marketability, being promoted well here in North America. I am well versed in this end of the business and such stallions have been selected, imported, competed and managed at far greater expense than you can imagine, by discerning owners who are not only offering superb stallions, but highly professional service that is worth every penny over the lifetime of the horse you are seeking to produce.

Our stallion no longer fits in the under $900 category, unless you apply for discounts. However, be sure to check costs of collections etc. In our case we split collections at actual cost , so the collection fee can be as small as $45, when split four ways which is the max we will do. Some farms charge a flat collection fee of up to $250 for each MO, even when they are splitting the semen 6 ways. This can result in less than stellar semen, and shipment of a single dose, possibly increasing your final costs immensely. Some also have very constrictive contracts, and limited LFG. Others are designed to make you a happy MO...
It is imperative to do all the homework before booking.

I think the stallion market is reflective of the housing market. When housing is going up, MO are optimistic and breeding. When the market goes south, MO get worried and cut back, or get out.
Publicly stated stallion fees remain the same, unlike most commodities.
Using "private treaty" would make sense in such a market, but some MO gasp and assume the stallion (or the sales horse) is beyond their reach.

Hi there,
We currently stand three stallions - Half Moon Romance (TB -approved CSH), Double Deposit (TB - AQHA approved) and Briarwyn Perri (Welsh, Section A). While Half Moon Romance is usually $1000.00 Cdn (AI or LC), for a limited time (and you can visit our website for more info if you'd like) his fee has been reduced to HALF ($500)! This applies to all mares, any breed registry - they dont have to qualify.
Double Deposit is offered by Private Treaty, and while that seems to put people off, his fee really isn't much. The only reason we advertise by Private Treaty, is his fee varies, depending on the type of mare bred (ie. TB (race mares), AQHA, grade etc), but he is actually quite low in comparison to other stallions of his caliber.
Briarwyn Perri is standing all of 2007 at a reduced fee - $300 Cdn.

I'm not sure how he is a sabino though.
He most certainly is both sabino & rabicano. His socks have jagged edges. They do not have to go over the knee & hock to be sabino. He also has lower lip white that I'm not sure you can see in the pics. He's going to be a chrome producer for sure! I can't wait to breed my Sword Dance mare to him. She's also got a ton of roaning throughout her body (she is rabicano), but no socks & just a star.
As for his movement, I was very pleased. I would like to see more before I say one way or another - we were only able to turn him loose for a second, but he is lovely.

Jun. 2, 2007, 03:53 PM
Booking fees come from the tB industry where they needed to have a handle on how many mares the stallion would be able to live cover.
Having watched many of the stallion auctions, I think a majority of stallions should be priced under $900 if they want to compete with frozen.
There are maybe a dozen stallions who are popular enough that they will get the list price in an auction setting.

Years ago, a typical stud fee in the US was $1500, then they were heading to $1800.
But the market has changed due to frozen. The frozen doses are cheaper and the MO may just be willing to put extra money into additional vet fees and breed to a stallion who has a good competition record in Europe.
Auctions are where one can see what people are willing to pay for a specific stallion. The list prices are not in touch with the market for the majority of stallions, JMHO.

To add to that, from who just ventured into frozen, the cheapest cost for a breeding I have ever had was a mare bred with frozen this year. If this mare gets in foal (and there is the rub, isn't it:winkgrin:) the vet fee was inconsequential, she was only in the clinic for a few days, and I will have a dose left over.
Given a choice, I still prefer fresh cooled with a live foal guarantee, but when frozen is half what a studfee is, and about the same as the collection/shipping charges charged which are over and above the fresh/cooled studfee, one has the give the choices some serious thought.
