View Full Version : Black TB Gelding Needs Help ASAP-

Marli
Dec. 6, 2006, 02:19 PM
Just received a phone call from Kelly (Lost & Found Horse Rescue, a 501 (c)(3 ) registered non-profit) and a dealer phoned her inquiring if she knew of anyone interested in a big black TB gelding that has recently bowed, located in W.Va. Don't have anymore specifics (size/age) except that he wants $250.00 for the horse. If anyone is interested and would like to offer this fella a home, please give Kelly a ring at- 717-324-1644 OR 717-428-9701

I can't offer a home, because I have no space. But I will donate some $$ towards his bail if we are doing that. Bows can heal up nicely. Hope someone can offer some space for this poor guy.

you know there's cheap transport - there's some COTH convoy/list, and we'd send dribbles for that.

You set your own time zone in the User CP. Go to "Edit Options" and the Date and Time area is near the bottom of the page. Then go to the bottom and "save changes".

Also bump for the horse!

I don't know if this will be any help, but we can take him, let him recover, and retrain and rehome him.
We live north of Toronto about 1 1/2 hrs.
If you folks can manage to get him here, if you think he can make the trip, we can look after him.

I'm in VA and could probably pick him up. I have room, but not really time for rehab. What does rehabbing a bow involve? If just turnout, then I could do that! If the situation is an emergency, then I could keep him here until someone else could come and get him. Please keep us posted as you know more information.

I am now set with the time thing... thanks!

Typically, dosen't a bow need some stall rest time and standing wraps?

I just talked to Kelly, she's contacting the trainer to get the latest news on the boy. Also have linked up with POSSIBLE transportation to meet at a halfway point. Avezan, if the trans. doesn't work out, you could pick him up and I could drive to Va and pick him up. He'd need lots of stall rest, not turnout.....although I do not know much about him yet.

Hi Dlgfly75-

It sounds like you're the person that committed to taking him. I had to run some errands and I've been trying to reach Kelly to confirm this info but should've come here first.

As this is a private situation and Kelly only facilitated it, if funds are needed for transport, I'm glad to see you've set up a PayPal account directly for you as you'll need to access them quickly.

At this point and from my reading, additional funds are necessary to get the horse to your safe haven, correct?

Well I'm not sure hero is the right word or he wouldn't be at risk of going to the meat market! But at least he's making the effort.

Good luck, I hope you get him home soon.

How old is he? There are two Sinclairs listed (if that is his full name) in the pedigree query:

http://www.pedigreequery.com/sinclair

You should be able to tell by his tattoo which one he is if you don't get his papers.

I agree, however he seems to be placing the blame on the owner. Also, I asked him his age......he said he didn't know:confused: , I then asked him if he had the papers and he said he'd have to get them from the owner.....sounds a little strange.....thanks for pulling up the pedigree, all the trainer said was that Sinclair is not an old horse:confused: , I'm going to dig a little deeper in the morning.

True the owner may have said get rid of that horse now, I'm not putting another dime into him but that wouldn't keep him (trainer) from buying him himself (or trading for bills owed) and finding a home for him or donating him or something. But at least his price is right for an emergency case. A trainer that doesn't know the age of his horse?? Well his tattoo will give you his definite name and you can get his pedigree from there and there are plenty of people with accounts who can get his racing info! =) Once you get a bill of sale you might be able to get a copy of his papers from the racetrack office, they should be on file there.

OK Everyone, this has turned into an even more deperate situation than I thought. The man I've been speaking to is the DEALER who will NO DOUBT have Sinclair sent off to market by Sunday. With the help of CANTER, we will be picking this guy up on Saturday to get him away from this situation as quickly as possible. We would still need donations for all of this to happen and we will have more info on where to donate ASAP. Thanks to everyone who is behind us, saving this guys life!

Drgnfly-

I didn't realize that you didn't know the number you were given was the dealer. And you're correct, he does not want the horse hanging around and has no place for him so he needs to be picked up asap.

I'm glad you were able to reach Fairweather as she can provide the immediate assistance needed (to get the horse asap) and lay him over for a day/two until he can be shipped down to you.

Donations are necessary as I understand that you don't have all the funds to ship.

I think it's wise if you repost your new paypal account so that for those that would like to see this horse get to you can contribute to his fare.

I am going to touch base with the dealer in the AM and arrange to pick up the horse and get him safe. We have room at CANTER for him until drg can take him, we just do not have the extra funds for him, so any donations in his name (i'll find out what it is) would be GREATLY appreciated.

If donations are being made to CANTER, that's OK, but it is NOT OK to post a private paypal address and ask for "donations." You MUST be a 501c3 charity in order to solicit donations on this board. Individuals cannot ask for donations, even if they are trying to do something charitable... sorry, but that's the way it's gotta be.

Well, I should hopefully be hearing soon that "horsey" is "safe", just waiting on news from Fairweather. I am worried. Not because I haven't seen him, don't know his name, or the fact that he's more broken than the dealer is willing to admitt......but because I want his gelding to like me. I know it sounds silly, but that's all I want. I am preparing myself for the worst, and the worst is OK with me. I'll keep everyone posted, when I get the call from Fairweather that shee has him. I just sent a few bucks to CANTER towards him. (It's the one coming from MA.) And drgfly75, Mother Nature can do a remarkable job in healing these guys. Sometimes you just need to allow enough time. Bows can set to a point where they are pretty cold and strong again. At the track, we made sure to stay away from deep, cuppy footing or mud when racing a horse with a bow, and we used ace bandages for support. Get a good vet, one who is used to racing injuries to help you out.

Man this is a great thing...course I didn't need to have tears this morning, just put makeup on! Good luck with him and do post info as you get it! My old horse had a bow and he took some wrapping, DMSO I think, and stall time, then just time off. He needed about 6 months I think and then he was totally fine, never lame on it again.

Poor pony has no name, so we were calling him "Newbie". I have to break something to his new mommy.

This is very difficult to say, but it needs to be said.

"Newbie-Noname" and I are in Love. We've decided to run away together and eat mass quantities of carrots and lounge in tall grass until we die of old age together.

This horse is a PERFECT gentleman, and I think he is only 3 or 4 years old, but his tattoo is not really clear. I think he's just a 2003 model though. He LOVES loves loves attention, and actually snuggles in your chest.

I'm so overwhelmed for so many reasons. First, to Drgfly, I honestly believe she's an angel. She fully expected a mess of an animal, and she bought him anyway simply because she is kind and sweet. Next to the generous people of COTH, you guys are so amazing, and come through to help some truly needy animals. I'm just so darn weepy.

With CANTER, we currently have 22 horses in our ownership, all special in their own way. But something about this boy has touched me in a way that I cannot quite describe.

The fact that his life was held so gently in our hands, and now he is safe thanks to Kelly at L&F, Marlifarm, Drg and the generous people here.

There are so many in need of help, it becomes so upsetting knowing you cant help all of them. But tonight i am happy, because we helped this one.

So, to everybody who cared, here are pictures of Drg's new, beautiful horse.

Hi! I'm Shannon, I'm new to the BB but I plan on being a regular here! lol.

I wanted to start off by THANKING everyone here at COTH, especially Coal's new mommy! He is a very lucky horse who will make his new owner very proud! It's so nice to know that there really are good (GREAT) people out there!

That being said, I am actually the one who will be caring for this lucky little (well, big) guy until FairWeather can take him down to his new Mommy! I am a foster home for CANTER & had the privilege of meeting this guy the minute he stepped off the trailer :). He truly is a little gem! He's VERY handsome, not to mention incredibly SWEET and adores people!! I spent a good hour with him this morning. I groomed him head to toe and brushed out his mane, tail, and forelock (which consists of about 5 hairs ;) ) and he stood there and gently groomed me back. Not 5 minutes after grooming him, he laid down in his stall just to get himself dirty again! He's a typical boy! I could go on & on about him, he's such a sweetheart! His new mommy is very, very lucky to have him & I can't wait for her to finally meet him! :)

I unfortunately have no money to donate for transportation but he can stay with us until FairWeather can take him to his new home and we'll take care of his costs. That is the least I can do for such a touching story! CANTER, however, is always in need of donations for other horses just like him so keep them in mind when making holiday donations--they are a WONDERFUL organization!!

Anyway, I love this horse and I know he will have a VERY good home! I will keep everyone updated on his progress and thanks again to each and every one of you for all pulling together to save this gorgeous horse! He deserved it!

What a Christmas Present, for both owner and horse! Such a happy story! :D

Congratulations Drgnfly- you hit the 'jackpot' with this fella! It was this time last week that the plea went out to help this guy and for a few moments I thought the discussion would get buried and he'd be sporting a trip to the sale today.

This diamond in the rough is already polished- he sure is a very handsome fella! Many happy years with him!!

:) It is MY pleasure! Coal (by the way I LOVE that name for him!) is still doing soooo well! He LOVES food & winnies everytime he hears buckets banging together! He has a funny winnie-can't wait for you to hear it! He's tolerating stall life very well and stands like a gentleman to have his wrap changed everyday. :) He went out for his first hand-walk today and enjoyed the short walk to the nearest patch of grass where he ate happily for about 15 minutes until he got bored and started grooming me!

You've got a ton of people standing behind you on this one & it sounds like this couldn't have happened to a better person! I'll keep you updated & feel free to call or email me anytime as well (Fairweather has my # & email) ! :) Take care!

With the help of Fairweather, we have found out who this handsome fellow is.......his JC name IS Sinclair, but not the ones that have been on this thread...I had to add him, but his Sire and Dam were in the system already.

I don't know a whole lot about racing bloodlines so if anyone could inform me of Coal's that would be great. Thanks!!!

SO...just another "Coal update"!

His manners are awesome! He loves to visit with the other horses through the bars on the front of his stall. If another horse walks by he makes it a point to stick his nose through the bars and say "Hello, I'm Coal & I am very handsome and would LOVE a playmate! Will you be my friend?" He has impecable manners though! He LOVES his head hugged and never tries to bash you in the face like so many of my boarder's horses do when you try to hug them! lol. He's just a big lush & everyone who sees him says how stunning he is! I've already had 4 people ask if he's for sale! Which of course brings me to tell his touching story and then they love him even more! lol. What a great Christmas gift! I'm priveledge just to have the chance to get to know him! :D Deffinately going to be a tear jerker when he leaves! But a happy one because he's going to such a good home!

AAAAAWWWWWWWWWW!!!!!!!!!!!! GM, these updates are getting more and more hard to take!:D I just can't beleive how Coal has turned out to be one of the sweetest horses on the planet! I'm shocked that everything has turned out this way. I know we have a long road ahead but my only request to God was that "I just want him to like me". You tell those buyers Coal's NOT for sale:lol: , but they can come see him on display in North Carolina:) .I can't imagine having to say goodbye to such an awesome guy:no: , but you know you are always welcome to our home ANYTIME. I can't imagine saying goodbye without even meeting him!:) Well, GM, again.........THANK YOU!! I'll get your number from Fairweather and call you before Coal leaves tomorrow.

No, I can't get my camera to work:( . But I will borrow one, I also plan on doing a video. It's hard to see how he is in a picture. I was blown away by his pictures Fairweather sent, but then when I saw him in person..............WOW!!! He's stunning! I promise I'll post pics or video as soon as I get it. He's a huge lovebug, BTW.

Here is the link to some pictures of me and Coal.:) Sorry about the quality, I'll post more as I get them...this webshots thing is new to me. Coal and I have bonded, he loves for me to go in his stall and just chill with him. He loves to groom me back, every time I brush him. I think he's finally getting the fact that this is his home and hopefully forgetting his former life at the track. He's so special.

He's a major LOFF BUG!!! I can't stand to see him in the stall all the time. I'll make sure to video the first day he goes into the paddock. I'll probably have him padded from head to toe!!! The vet says only one more month of stall rest and then a little turnout each day. He also said that he can be back in regular work in about 6 months! I can't wait to be asking for "RETRAINING HELP WITH OTTB" in my future thread!:D

He looks wonderful! Thanks so much for updating. There's nothing I like better than knowing that a horse didn't just get rescued from a killer...he got rescued permenantly - safe in a good home where he will get the training he needs to have a successful rest of his life. That's the best!

Thanks everyone for remaining big fans of Coal! Yes, his babysitter DOES have his hands full but he seems to like being the boss!;) I kept Coal in the round pen today because I was worried he did too much, but today, he's still very sound and his leg feels tight. As for my plans.........
I never expected to be able to ride him....and now I'm thinking I'd love to do dressage with him................and if he can jump..............I'll start in the hunters and then move to three-day.........my passion. But it's all up to whatever Coal fits into. I plan on backing him in May and depending on ultrasounds........go from there. I just can't believe he hasn't been lame since he's been here. Well, thanks guys for your cheers....OH!!! BTW, Coal is famous around here! He's even getting free Healthy Coat products! He's touched so many people!:D
