View Full Version : Sad Day (Sunkissed Acres Barn burns to the ground)

I want to tell you with a heavy heart but..........................I saved every soul in that barn and could I ask for more. There would be no consoling me, I likely would have died trying, but by the grace of God, I remained as calm as if it were normal, and led each horse safely out the door. I went in my usual order with a rope around the neck and as scared as they were, they were looking for that safety. Oh thank the dear Lord. All the kids are ok.
On the other hand, when I rise tomorrow, the full impact of what I have lost will come to light. Not a bucket or a feed tub, not a garbage can which incidentally were filled at 5 tonight. NOt a halter, nor a lead rope, not a medication left or a supplement. NO running water, no lights, no fencing.
No blankets from the elements other than the 5 I had put on a bit earlier.
Not a thing left. And tomorrow, I will simply have to start over again because there are kids who are counting on there mommy, Its that simple.
Lori and ALL four legged friends. (even the cat found safety in the fire truck,)
I cannot believe the generosity of all involved. It overwhelms me. A website has been started in order to list what has been recieved and what is needed. This will help those who want to help but simply dont know what we need. Today, blankets and buckets but................very shortly there will be a new barn there and you guys are right, human stuff will be needed. I dont have a fork any longer LOL. And hooks and double ended clips etc. etc. Whew, but I look forward to tomorrow again.
The website address is http://jlhwebdesign.com/sunkissedacres.html I so appreciate the effort and trouble you guys have gone to.
Some of the kids were picked up today in order to prevent further stress on either them or myself. The neighbors have been helpful as well as several volunteers and friends.
But nothing tops you guys. All my children are coming home to help me rebuild as well. Now thats a bonus also.
It will be a bit hard especially physically for a bit but you guys have come through. Almost all the kids have some form of blanket now. Bless you all, there arent enough words to thank you
Sunday morning update. the people of this board have pulled off more help than I could ever have imagined. AMAZING. The kids will be standing in new apts. in no time. I had many volunteers come yesterday and as much as we were allowed to clean up was done. We put up temp fencing LOL, horse gaurd can be tied hehehehehe, and so the kids are safe from the carnage. The vet came out, checked everyone and replaced the most important of meds. People came with blankets from far and wide and the cold weather disappeared. Noctis husband delivered some water buckets and a couple feed buckets, we got in feed for the weekend and the kids were happy about that.
It has been an amazing two days. I am going to end up with a lot more than we started with including friends and people who are more aware of who we are. 10 horses were picked up for temp homes and two were adopted. We shifted things around in the big barn and are sharing the feed and water tubs. It works and if the weather turns really ugly, the old folks have shelter. they will have to share. A plumber came over and we have water as close as humanly possible. The riding arena houses one of the blind kids and he has no complaints.
My face is ok, and my hair will grow back LOL. I never comb it anyhow.
What you guys have done is nothing short of a miracle. We will be built up better than before. The new barn will not be as elaborate but will house more horses and be more functional. Sadly, I did not design the barn that burnt. It was built for show ponies by the previous owner. We saved some things and what we didnt is being replaced.
If ever there was an example of the power of many, this is it. We are going to be further ahead than we were previously. How can a disaster end up this way. Simply by the kindess and generosity of you guys.
I hope I have covered everyone in my thanks and cant wait to meet many of you and show you the kids. Other than the barn, things are going back to normal quickly and I will keep you guys posted on the progress of the new barn. Its still xmas and a joyful season. I have so much to be grateful for. The kids are coming home to help rebuild and so many volunteers have come forth that we can accomplish much in a short time. I am ready to move forward. Today is a whole new day, I am looking forward to the new and that is thanks to you. We have almost enough blankets today to cover the kids and miraculously the cold weather diappeared. This has all turned out ok somehow.
I am off now to care for the kids and go and get some alfalfa. Thank you all, thankyou. Those words seem so simple for the miracle you guys created. There will be much excess guaranteed and I know of several other rescues who can make use of a good deal of the donations. I appreciate all your efforts, and prayers. The angels were watching over this farm.
sincerely, Lori and four legged friends (and three legged kitty)

Oh Lori - I just don't know what to type here.....
For those wondering, Lori is as kind a soul as they get. She always put her animals first, and has done so much to help fellow COTHers when ever they have been in need. She has a rescue, and has taken in so many unwanted horses, and dogs - including my dear Nanna (who wasn't unwanted, but was without a home when we lost our job) and my boss's blind horse.
Lori, now it is your turn to let us help YOU, so please do post your address!
I am sure her need list right now is long, but - just guessing here - lots of the basics:
Halters, buckets, feed tubs, lead ropes, Garbage cans.... I know she has several Sr. horses so Joint Supplements, basic first aid needs, leg wraps, feed....
How about Hay? I know you had bought extra, was it lots as well??? Call me and let me know what I can do!

I am so very, very sorry. Thank God you were able to get all the animals out and without injury to yourself. I can't imagine how horrible it must have been.
Please, let us help. I've only recently started posting but have been a lurker her for a while...I've seen how kind and supportive this group can be.
Many of us probably have stuff that we are not using that we can send you, at least stuff you need right now. (Halters, lead ropes, buckets etc). At some point you'll need to shop. If you let us know what stores you need to shop at, that might be a good idea too.

Now I am hysterical, now it hits home. I would have died a thousand deaths over is just one of those little kids had been hurt. They count on me. I cant begin to tell you what the sound of there fear was like. I dont know where I got the strength to stay calm when all I wanted to do was freak. I even managed to keep the firemen from spraying until I could get the last boy out. Printz was scared more of the noise and the people than the fire. I burned my face trying to call him quietly to me but LOVE and GOD took care of it. He came and let me lead him away.
I can handle this, I know it. I could not handle the loss of one of them though. That would have done me in.
My address is 536 Woods Rd. Summerville GA 30747
Yes, feed tubs and water buckets. Heck, no water there now LOL. Supplements, There is not a thing left in that barn. Not a single thing so anything to do with a horse and you cant go wrong.
I just finished filling the barn with feed, hope the feed store has some extra in cause delivery is Mon. I am sure I just bought the last bag of beetpulp.
I lost my round bales of hay but.............................Not a single square was lost cause it is around the corner from home. I lost my alfalfa but can get that again as well.
And because of the university rescues, I do have a paypal address. It is snkstangls@hotmail.com
I am going to kiss the heck out of the kids tomorrow. They were so good, you guys would have been so proud of them. They were shining stars in the face of adversity.
I am so lucky, so lucky. someone saw the flames and simply called to see if I was burning something in the field. Thank GOD. Clearly, the fire had just started and was in the feed and utility room as apposed to the stalls and aisle.
I have to go to bed. Need to deal with the mess tomorrow as a matter of safety for the kids. hehehehe even the weanlings behaved themselves. The two blind horses simply stood a distance away and kept there cool. What troopers.

What a living nightmare. What a hero we have here to have saved every four-footed soul.
I might suggest that those who have blankets to send not worry about sizes and just send them. They don't have to be perfect fits, they just need to get there. We're having a winter cold snap in the Southeast right now and the oldsters need some protection.
Bless you Lori. And listen, get yourself to the doctor PRONTO. You have had an extremely traumatic experience, and you need to be on the watch for the kickback.

I have extra stuff I can send to help, but maybe if someone lives nearby we could get a list together of what is needed or at least post what is sent so she doesn't get 50 halters and no blankets. Does anyone know how many horses are there? I counted 26 on her website.

Oh Lori, my heart aches for you. Thank God you are OK, and could get everyone safely out. Someone was watching out for Sunkissed Acres, that is for sure.
I'm sending money today, I always give extra at Christmas time to various charities, that money will be going out to you today.
As Hitchinmygetalong said, watch out for yourself as well, sometimes reaction to intense stress can show up in many ways. And the kids need you, so take care of yourself first.

I will send money. I'm so sorry. A fire is one of my biggest fears. Thank goodness you were able to save everyone. I'm sure you are drained right now...please get the rest you need as you will need to be strong in the coming days.
Also, in the event you need to get some rehomed, even temporarily, and there are others in my area available, I can make room for the winter for one. We have enough hay for an extra mouth and honestly, a baby or an older horse would be a great addition as a companion for my weanling. I can't provide a permanent home at this point but, well, the offer stands if you need it.

What do you need? I'm back in the US on the 8th. I could send Dad and Mr ET on a road trip.
How are you set for hay? I could probably swing some mid sized bales of good meadow grass and some good eastern oregon alfalfa as well.
If you can PM me or post a list of your Rx drugs I can order them. I'll need to get in contact with your DVM to make sure the Rx gets to the right folks at the supply co but we have MWI etc accounts or if that doesn't work I can have him/her order it and just charge it to our account and I'll pay for it if that would work better. There were surely angels looking over you during this terrible time! Nobody ever really knows how they'll react when confronted with a blaze, but God gave you the strength to have the courage necessary to ensure all your animals made it to safety.
They're all alive - please take the advice as someone else suggested and make sure you see a doctor yourself as soon as possible.
As difficult as it is right now, the sooner you phone your insurance provider and get the claim in the sooner you'll be able to make a better assessment of when you'll be able to start to re-build.
As long as there is a pasture for your brood the basic necessities at the moment are hay/grain and water - it will keep them content until things are able to be sorted out and if needed, other arrangements can be made for those that require extra care. Remember, the most important aspect is that they're all alive and no one, not you or the horses, were seriously hurt in this fire.
You have the support of this on-line horse community and I'm sure supplies and donations will be arriving lickety-split!
Try to unwind, spend time with the brood and give thanks that only the barn was lost, as it could've been much worse. God Bless.

Lori,
I am so terribly sorry to hear of your loss. Thank God you got the horses out. I think a fire is every horsepersons worst nightmare. I have stuff that I can send you.
For those participating in the COTH Christmas card exchange, I think that everyone should add a $1, $5 or $20 bill in a card for Lori. Whatever you can spare. I haven't checked to see if you were participating again this year, but I still have your business card from last year.
Take care of yourself.

I've sent a donation (paypal). I wish it could be more.
I probably have some blankets I don't need but I'm wondering if they are worth shipping or you'd rather have more money? I'll send some more money in a couple of weeks...I hate to waste shipping! Now, if anyone from Va is heading down in the that direction and can take a load of things, I'd be happy to clean my barn out and add to the collection! I've even got 2 bags of senior feed that I was going to mix with other feed just to use up but I'd be happy to send it down...I just can't ship it! So, if anyone wants to coordinate a roadtrip with supplies, I'll be happy to throw some items in and some gas money too! I just know I won't have time to make the trip myself.

About 11 years ago my barn burned to the ground, it was gone in 20 minutes. I know your pain. I had one horse in and one horse out. I got my horse out, thank goodness I had Dutch doors. If I did not he would have been killed. My cat was up in the loft and must have come down with the roof. We didnot find her for 2 days. She was so badly burned that they wanted to put her to sleep. We fought for her and she lived to be 19.5 years old.
I have a lot of stuff that I will not be using as we are starting to get ready to move south in 3 years . i will be glad to send you some stuff. Let me know.
My heart is with you. "Stuff" can always be replaced, lives can not. You have your animals and things will get better.

The phone is ringing off the hook, all sorts of help is being offered and I am going to utilize it. Right this very second though, I absolutely must run to the feed store and get breakfast for the kids as the store closes at noon. Need to get insurance lady out here as well as fence off the remains of the barn so no one gets hurt.
I will contact each and everyone as soon as I have the immdediate taken care of. My burns are not so bad that I need a doctor I dont think, just take care of myself.
The vet will replace what I need today for the fellow who just had eye surgery and somehow, we will make it.
I am going to see the faces of everyone out there, that is the important thing.
To everyone, thankyou. Bless your hearts for being there for the kids. Having them here will simply keep me going. If anyone needs to be put up, I will definitely utilize the offers of stalls. I know the kids are not going to suffer any immdediate hardships as I simply wont allow it. hahahahahah New living room just might come in handy LOL. Ponies in the house.
OK, off to find feed. Delivery day is Mon but I am sure I can scrounge up enough till then.
You guys, thankyou, thankyou, thankyou. Sunkissed Acres will continue, just a minor setback. Our hearts are still as big as ever.
Love Lori and friends.
PS for those who enquired, we have 33 kids here. One leaving this afternoon for a temporary home. Horses range in size from a 70-84 weanlings to big big kids.

Just last year about this time, my daughter found Lori and her Sunkissed Acres and Lori agreed to take in my daughter's beautiful chestnut mare, CeCe. She gave her such a loving home and has made her thrive and be productive again, more than we could have ever dreamed - She is a miracle worker with these horses. Lori, all of us in St. Louis will do whatever we can to help you - count on that! Hug all those horses for Steph and me - especially CeCe and Mia. Help is on its way!

If someone could PM or post the name, and number of her veterinarian and feedstore for me I would really appreciate it.
Also, I'll be sending the blanket from the Avery's Place auction (if I win it lol) Luka can live with his hand me down another season, he'll grows an excellent winter coat. I'll PM the seller via that board to make arrangements for shipping.
One of her horses is Luka's Secret Santa for the Horse treat exchange and I must say that even though I don't know her outside of this BB she has struck me as one of the most kind and thoughtful people I am fortunate to know.
Some things to send/take her as far as medical supplies: I'm sure some of the guys have minor burns/scrapes/cuts-Nolvasan ointment and Dermacleans are both good ointments. Everyone should have bute and banamine pastes on hand (those need Rx though) telfa pads, bandaging materials triple antibiotic ointment,
Many of her guys are toothless/elderly-equine senior, chopped alfalfa/forage, beetpulp, TC lite, applesauce(or apples) carrots etc.
I think she could use a nice massage too. And a friend to lean on.

I was just telling a friend the other day after going through my trunk of blankets that I have several that fit neither of my horses and that I should find a worthy horse rescue that might need them. Also, since I will be moving in the summer, there are a lot of things that I won't be needing (since my horses are moving from being at home to a boarding barn). I have little money, but probably many of the things you need. Where should I bring or send them?

Does anyone know the feed store number or which one it is? Some immediate help there, perhaps. the ebay idea is great, HP- seems as if it were horseloverz or somesuch thing it would get there quickly. Shipping bulky horse things might just cost as much as getting new from Ebay if there is free shipping. Jeffers offers free shipping...

So,so sorry to hear the news! I've been trying to figure out what excess I have in my barn-- mainly halters and lead ropes. But I think Genevieve's idea is great. If folks want or can, they can just do a valley vet (etc.) order direct to Sunkissed. Is someone nearby who could help? Just tell us what is needed!

Yes, Annikak, we can send her gifts instead of sending each other gifts! I have tears because it brought back memories of the two fires we had. It is the time after the fire that is very difficult and takes a good long time to recover. But, with lots of love and help from us, the recovery will be faster!!!
Yes, Annika! I will send her gifts and will send you a card describing what they are.

horse_poor called me early this AM (well, early for me! I'm not diurnal!) - and I said, "I'm trying to get my sorry butt into lab - is this important?" And yes, it was.
Obviously this calls for more than a dribble, and I am so, so - overwhelmed, I guess - at how people are coming together! Even Liz, with her difficulties - and others - coming through to help someone who has done so much for horses.
I can't believe that as I was boxing things up to send, I was packing up some homemade horse treats for Lori's kids, and the barn was burning.
And I can't believe how positive Lori is - but then again, what a blessing that no one was hurt or lost.
I've got a few bits and pieces and am sending a check via snail mail. Bigger than a dribble.
And thank you all. You guys are simply ...wonderful.

BeastieSlave, I realy don't think she's being tested. There's a GOOD REASON for this. Maybe the barn had an electrical wiring flaw that would have burned her barn to the ground when all the horses were in it and no one was around, if this hadn't happened. Maybe there was contaimination in the new feed she'd JUST gotten that would have done in some of the retirees. I believe that this really IS a good thing. And look at all the supplies she's getting!!!

I am calling the Rome TSC in an hour to talk to the manager about how we can help Lori through them, and if TSC will help with discounted items or whatnot to help Lori get the items she needs.
Lots of stuff is helpful, but without a barn to hold them all- walls to hang buckets on, or a roof to shelter the items, ...
well I think the more people we alert to the opportunity to do good here (and get some great PR) the better for Lori and the horses!

Emergency Relief
PetSmart Charities provides emergency relief funding and supplies to assist pets in times of hurricanes, fire and other natural catastrophes. We also provide much-needed support for man-made emergencies, including pet hoarding and puppy mill rescues.
In 2005, we donated funding and supplies to 237 agencies to provide immediate help for pets affected by natural disasters and cruelty cases. PetSmart Charities raised $3.5 million in emergency relief funding from the Hurricane Katrina and Rita disaster alone.
If you are an animal welfare agency and would like to request emergency assistance, call 1-800-423-PETS ext. 2840.
This is from the Petsmart website. I know they have great programs for such situations. Perhaps they would step up to help also? I imagine til the barn is rebuilt Lori is going to need ongoing help.

I just came in and read this thread and it reduced me to tears. It wasn't many years back that I awoke to the sound of a crackling fire in my own barn when I opened the front door. We were able to extinguish the fire although there was some damage done, but we lost no horses. I am so very sorry that you have to bear this tragedy in your life but there's always a silver lining to every cloud and for you, that silver lining is the fact that you saved all your horses.
I will join the others and send you a Paypal donation. I have things I can donate but the money will be there before any supplies from me will.
You're a brave woman to lead every one of those horses to safety and you have my deepest admiration. You also have my sympathy that you have lost your barn - we horse people never realize how attached we are to a structure until it's gone or in my case, nearly gone.

Lori- we are sending you our prayers, and what else we can...
I know Lori personally, and I can tell you her heart is bigger than the state of Georga!!! she has taken in numerous horses of friends, whom needed to be retired, or placed for adoption; Lori's rescue/retirement is often the last stop for many aged, abused or unadoptable ponies and horses- she LOVES them all- and they live out the remainder of their lives being well loved and cared for. Her life is dedicated to this cause. This fire was not an act of neglegance, or poor barn management. She would have been devistated if any of her "kids" had been injured.
I think she said she currently has 32 horses/ponies- her "old folk" will have shelter in the remaining barn, the "younger", healthier ones will be living out until a new barn can be built; its those esp. that will need the med. & lite weight turn-outs ASAP- all sizes,( as well as other types of blankets for later in the season), to protect them until perm. shelter is built ; and extras WILL help, because they do get wet, and need to be changed while drying out; Cash to buy supplies needed right now would be a great help I would think; but if you have items not being used, I know Lori will make good use of all she receives;
Lori's address, and paypal acct (her rescue is a tax deductable organization) are posted in earlier posts;
Does anyone from the area know the local Aggie/Tech trade schools/colleges in that north west area of GA., that could be contacted to help with a barn building as a "hands on experience" part of their curriculum? or an org. like Habitat for Humanity that would help an animal rescue/retirement non-profit? Lori wants to/plans to rebuild- the bad weather is coming- and the need for quality equine rescue is growing too fast- its NOT a money making business, and there are just not enough facilities for the many unwanted horses, nor enough people able and willing to do this unrelenting job.
Lori- Thanks for caring and doing the job you do!

I have also gathered some non horse practical items for the barnyard...step ladders, laundry baskets used to carrying things, pitch forks, a hay cart...some summer items like fly masks....several brushes and saddle racks, a hose and hose rack..
like 20 buckets---and double end snaps.
As soon as I know if you will need riding tack I can add some more things.

OK Jen22 and I gathered 2 blankets (size 78-70 and 74-76 I think) They are heavier weight canvas type. We also gathered a bunch of halters and lead ropes.
To those of you with tack, might I suggest you post it on the auction website that was previously for War Admiral? Jen22 had a pair of bell boots we were going to throw in the box but I suggested we put them on the auction and if they do not sell, then send them to Lori in the event she can use them.
We should probably keep a list of who is sending what so Lori does not end up with 100 halters and 2 blankets...

Does anyone from the area know the local Aggie/Tech trade schools/colleges in that north west area of GA., that could be contacted to help with a barn building as a "hands on experience" part of their curriculum? or an org. like Habitat for Humanity that would help an animal rescue/retirement non-profit?
Maybe a bit hokey, but how about Extreme Makeover/Ty Pennington???
I say we flood them with letters about horses who need a final home and how Lori gives them that , and she deserves a nice new barn to replace the one burnt.

One will never believe I was burned out at all if everything offered on this board is sent LOL. I may be inundated with blankets and buckets LOL. And yes, no where to go with them but the new living room LOL Works for me.
Everything happens for a reason and this too. You know, if this had been the night prior, no one would have gotten out. And I had all the horses up, not just the really old ones. I had been working my husbands job for him the last week and was in the barns from 11 at night till 4 in the morning. I had finished yesterday and so was spending time in the barn catching up. Right, this was not negligence, it was simply an electric malfunction. It happens. I am truly on the positive end of this, I have every single four legged friend, my whole reason for living. My little crippled kids are still hobbling around, the two mommies still have there kids by there side, the pregnant lady is still pregnant.
I have a couple of the horses going to a friends simply because they require a bit more. I only have a couple of horses for adoption and they may have been adopted as they were wanted before the fire even. The old folks and I, well, we couldnt live without each other I dont believe. There are some crippled kids here and a few that are simply terrified of people in general. I think moving them now would be detrimental to there emotional well being.
By all means, come on up next weekend. I would be so proud to show you my kids and by then, the insurance company should be more than ready to allow me to finish bringing it down and cleaning it up. I have the offer of some equipment which means we can get up some new fencing. Sadly, vinyl fencing melts in the heat. Just come on down, you would be more than welcome and we can do a hot dog roast if you all like.
I gathered up a few blankets this morning from people I had loaned them too so a few more now have warmth.
It will and is working out. The initial shock is over, my hair will grow back, my face is not scarred.
We need blankets size 70-84. I got one 84 this morning so need one more.
I need one 80, two 78's, 1 76, 2 74's, 1 72 and one 70.
That will have everyone covered. Thankfully, we have a second barn which old folks will occupy if necessary. It had a few blankets in it belonging to the horses which occupied it. It was the old folks barn which was burned, hence the meds and supplements.
Our nearest TSC is in Rome, my usual feed store in Summerville is called Chattooga Farm and Garden. There phone number is 706-734-3991. I do have a Country Supply charity donation name. It is Sunkissed Acres.
I also use Double D feed and tack in Rocky Face. Not sure of there number but it is available from information if anyone needs it.
Feed will be our biggest thing. Hay will also be critical, rounds and alfalfa.
And of course, labor and cash. I will know in the next week what insurance is going to pay out to rebuild but rebuild is what is going to happen. I know our fences were not insured because she kept telling me I could not insure fences but man, is that stuff expensive.
I will try and answer some of the individual pm's as well.
Thankyou everyone. I could not have made the day without you all.
Love Lori and four legged friends

Maybe this is why you are asking this, but this year Extreme Makeover had Morton build a barn for a family. There were pics on the Morton website. I think it's a great idea.

You said you need weenling/foal blankets, right? I didn't see that anyone has sent that to you. What size weenling/foal blanket do you need?
Small (adjusts 26" - 40")
Medium (adjusts 40" - 48")
Large (adjusts 48" - 56").
If you need weenling/foal blankets I'll order one for ya! Gotta keep those babies warm!

I know I have an abundance of lead's halters, bridles, bits, and a few coolers that are not being used.
I will go by Horse Health on monday ( they are only like 1 1/2 miles from me) and see what can be done there.

Lori,
Dribble, drabble a little bit more is coming your way. If you have a kid that misses it's stall, I can provide a vacation stall and private turnout. It's strange that I was thinking this week that I was ready to take on another "child in need", so the offer is open (but I totally understand about not moving the older horses as it may upset them a bit too much - they DO know when something is amiss and can get upset easily.
I am sending you a little dribble right now.

I have shipped saddles this way actually. I just rolled it up in a pillowcase (for the protection of the saddle), put it in a GOOD tote with locking handles, and then went crazy with the packing tape. I went around the seam of the lid several times, and then around the whole tub top to bottom several times. Then I taped a shipping label to the top and took it to the post office. Shipped it out USPS for about $10 (not including insurance). :)

I did both, USPS looked at me a bit strangely with tubs but accepted them. UPS seemed to be a bit cheaper for heaver items.
I shipped opaque tubs, not the see through type. Not sure if that would matter though.

I think a few pages back Lori said she had grass hay stored around the corner so she was OK on that for the mean time. She's going to have to replace her alfalfa, grain, beet pulp etc which should be delivered to the feed store on monday (tomorrow)
Unfortunately she'd just stocked up and 'wiped' the feed store out of several things!
She mentioned also that the fire seemed to be an electrical thing, not due to negligence or hay or anything like that.
I think she also said she'd managed to get a few round bales out to the guys that were staying in paddocks.

We run a rescue in Ontario, Canada, and having rescued 2 horses this week, 2 pigs (long story) 2 dogs, and a friend that was sexully assaulted and beaten, we are rather tapped out.
I think it is short of amazing that Sunkissed managed to lead them all from a burning barn. Very courageous.
I have a few American dollars around, and I will send a card with them.

I donated a horse to Lori a couple of years ago, an old retired QH with broken knees that I had rescued myself as well. Lori is a wonderful person who truly loves every animal on her farm.
I have some small size blankies that I used on my filly while she was growing, and some smaller halters. I just sent Lori a box a week or so ago with some extra tack and about 10 halters, I hope it survived the fire!
I also have some extra buckets I will send, and it would seem as though tomorrow is a good day for a good tack room going over. I'll pack up everything extra I have (hoofpicks, brushes, girths, and I know I have at least one extra bridle) and get it right out.
I also have lots of extra dewormers too that I can send.

My daughter woke up at 4 am and ran to my bedroom yelling fire ! Our horses were at an event 15 minutes down the road at Meadows of Moorpark directly in the line of fire. We got there through police barricades. The horses are fine and we are out of imminent danger.

snkstacres is in fact reading this because Dressage Geek told me I would cry if I had time to get on here and read this today. I needed another good cry. Bawled when I talked to Noctis today for the first time. So much good came of this, I will have a bigger, better barn this time to hold more pony kids. By this time tomorrow, every single horse here will be wrapped up in a warm and snuggly blanket. I will have enough pails to go around instead of having to go back and forth LOL. The carport will be full of feed once more when the stores open there doors. The farrier is coming to do at least a few of the horses since he was scheduled on Saturday. It is all good. I am once again looking forward to Xmas. The little toothless kids have alfalfa hay tonight.
I want to address just a few questions I have read. In the way of feed, I use Purina Senior, I use TC Senior and TC complete. I also use Purina Adult and Junior for the weanling. My kids love TS Dumor senior and I use that as well. I use TC Rice Bran and Stabilized Flax and BOSS. You cant go wrong with almost any senior, or complete feed at this farm. We use alfalfa cubes and Purina alf. pellets cause they are tiny and soft. We also use bagged dry alfalfa for night time chewing.
Tomorrow we will be inudated with buckets and halters and leads. Funny isnt it how you miss those little things. A hoof pick, yup, didnt have one. Not even a comb to take out the tangles LOL.
But, at least the oldest of the crowd had on there blankets. They will be snuggly warm tonight irreguardless. I also decided that I would dump a bucket of shaving onto the ground for the kids since they seem to really really want to just have a lay down nap. A few keep trying to get me to open the barn door LOL
As for being a hero, not really you guys. There were only four kids in and one at the back so five total of the 33. There was no thought when I went in there except to get the kids out. Every story I had ever heard about barn fires went through my mind and so it was a successful endeavor. Then again, my husband said he knew full well that I would have died in that barn had it been worse as there was simply no stopping me. It would not have been worth death but again, there was no thought so...........I am not a hero, stupid. Then again, there is little in life that is more important to me than these old or broken kids. They are my purpose in life.
I have made a lot of contact with people who have used my services over the years and its so nice to be able to tell them about there kids. Famous Amos, CeCe, Cowboy, Tanner, Aristotle, AJ, Feather, Miss Mia, Lacey and Snuffy, Big Dan, Blue, Ginni, Gaby Baby, Victor, Paco, Lightning, Commander, Sunshine, Darlin, Charlie Horse, Sweetie, Blaze, Daisy, High Pockets, Gringo, Biscuit, Luke, Grace, Dottie, Moose and Katie all thank you from the bottom of there hooves. And Alumni, well he jumped ship and went to Florida LOL.
Tomorrow promises to be a full day, whew, trucks coming in, insurance peoples and fire inspectors, farrier, feed, etc. etc. so I best get to the kids for one more night feed.
Thank you all for all you have done and Noctis for sending some buckets LOL. For the hay, for the prayers and for all you guys have done for this little farm.
Oh and by the way, if anyone here works for Dept of Ag, my limit is supposed to be 20 horses but they cant count either. heheehehehe

snkstacres is in fact reading this because Dressage Geek told me I would cry if I had time to get on here and read this today.

Lori I donated a couple reads... and some cash. If you were closer I'd probably be driving over bunch of stuff, but I think the shipping wouldn't quite be worth sending old stuff to you. So a small donation to help a bit, to begin with anyway.
My heart is with you my friend! The ponies will be fine, after all they have you.
Bless you,

I also just found this thread and was so sad to hear about the fire. :( But as usual, the people here are the most caring horse people and have come through for another person in need in such a big way. I'm so very proud to be a part of this Board. God bless you Lori and let us know if you need anything else. :)
BTW - any need for a size 52" quilted blanket? I got it for Festus the donkey, but it doesn't fit him. I'll ship it right out if you need it. :)

And if you haven't checked out the auction, DO IT. Some fun things there!

Sent this AM by UPS...
1 bucket
2 leather halters
4 lead ropes
assorted grooming supplies (2 picks, a few biug and small brushes, a few soft curries)
homemade horse treats!
and a check for Lori
I didn't end up sending the corona and hoofsaver. It is so freakin cold here I was worried about freeze thaw cycles resulting in both of them bursting and ruining everything.
Thanks WA for posting the links! I saw more stuff was up.
And thanks ironbessflint - I emailed you my info.
Edited to add: I just looked at the list of donations. You guys are simply...wonderful. I mentioned to Lori what a wonderful PR story, if someone had the connections and ability to do so.

I have some blankets, ropes, leads, etc... for Lori and I'm right near Charlotte on I-85. It's going to be in the LOW 20's here tonight, and I know it's about the same where Lori is. It would mean alot if she could have these blankets in her hands tonight, is anyone going through here?

I was ordering buckets for my new barn from Dover.
So, 3 Forti-flex flat back buckets and 3 heavy rope lead lines are being drop shipped from Dover to Sunkissed Acres. Just hope they get there soon. Unfortunately, I kind of doubt it with Dover but hopefully they can be used once they do arrive.

Went to the WA Thoroughbred auction yesterday. Some nice broodmares were selling for $100-400 (no, I didn't forget a zero or two) so I went to the bank and withdrew $200 and went back to see if there was a mare calling my name. There wasn't. With eight horses in my barn already, any additional one would have to call REALLY LOUDLY.
So the $200 is on its way to you, Lori.

Just went through my things and I have a pretty much NEW WB Landa turnout sheet in size 84. I will run it through a rinse cycle to get the dust off as it has been just sitting in the barn.
Happy to send it. I will check around my barn tonight to see what else I can send. I am sure there are some halters in various sizes that can be parted with.
I'll update this post later tonight with my findings!

For a little bit of amusment in this trying time: there is a Solo Comb on the way.
It seems Dover had a question about the order I sent and called yesterday while I was out. My mom answered and didn't realize that the order was donation items so she added a solo comb to it :). It was hysterical tonight when she mentioned Dover called and I shouldn't open the box when it arrived. I had to inform her that the box would not BE arriving, at least at our house, LOL.
We had a great laugh out of it and when I explained the situation she was happy to know she added to the order :). So I hope you get much enjoyment out of the solo comb because I certainly have! :D

Some fast food gift cards might be in order.
I just got off the phone with Lori and am sending her down some blankets for the heese and the yearling and some other misc stuff. She has horses that need Koppertox and general wound stuff. They are also in need of the spray on waterproofing for rewaterproofing the blankets. Grooming supplies are another need.
I'm sending her some Koppertox, I just bought a huge bottle, and some blankets, and some halters and leads, and a saddle, and maybe a bit or two, and whatever else my BO and I dig up tonight. Will email IBF when I know what all is going.

Ok I am sending out a big box with about 4 flatback Fortiflex buckets, a creep feeder, several nylon halters, a couple of leather halters, some smaller halters that I had been saving from when my filly was little but Lori needs them more than I.
I also found some small blankets (Landa's) that my filly wore over the last couple of years. I have an adjustable foal blanket, and a landa size 69 and one that is I think a 72, they were only used one season and look new. Plus a couple of other blankets that I had that came with a horse I have and am not using this season. I'm also sending several bridles, mostly English and one western one that belonged to the aformentioned "Famous Amos" when he was here before I sent him to Lori. Also have a really really nice western square pad that has been used about twice (when my husband rode Amos).
I'll throw anything else in there that I can dig up.

I am off to USPS tomorrow a.m. to send out my stuff... how are you all sending it? Is there some cheaper rate we can send it that will still get it there within a decent timeframe?? (Hard to mail horse blankets "book rate"!)
Wonder if there is a Boston Market in Sommerville.

I have some heavy weight turnouts that have very tight stitching on the outer fabric, probably 1000D or more, that are in super shape. I was thinking of sending them but thought they would probably be too hot for the horses. Please let me know if you think they would work. I have one 75, two 78s and one 81. They are like new. You guys could not imagine the delivery by LMH. As I told Dressage Geek, there was a saddle rack there that I always wanted and could never afford, not because it is really expensive but because it was a luxury. i was thrilled. Poop carts and a hay wagon. Forks and sponges. There was a bit of everything. All the big horses look like pampered show horses tonight because of the wonderful stable blankets. hehehehe one had flowers on it with a matching hood. Ari doesnt know it is girly colors ok. Tomorrow the little guys will have there new threads as well.
Buckets, yes, we got buckets and each horse had his own for eating tonight. A salt block holder, I didnt even realize I no longer had one of those. And we got hoof picks. Hooray. The farrier was here today at the same time as LMH and so I never even got to say more than thankyou. There were a few horses who absolutely had to get shoes on or the problem would become gastronomical if they started losing shoes. I had cancelled him prior due to the fire. LMH's little doggy was sick and so she never got to meet the kids but.........................I know they would be very very grateful if they knew who delivered the new clothes.
There is another group coming this weekend and they really must meet the kids so they can do like me and brag about them. You cant help but be impressed by this gang of renegades LOL.
Clean up of the carnage starts on Wednesday, yahoo, and then I am immediately going to get a new paddock done for the Printz. He is simply not happy living where he is because he likes his own space and so he shall have it.
the kids are adjusting to dining out and there is little fighting as I have grouped them well, they just have issues taking turns. The big guys will have to share there stalls and thats it. Old folks first.
Its all coming together and I finally remembered to eat today. Yup, went to Walmart and bought a loaf of bread and a ton of fruit. Dotty my volunteer chopped off my hair so it only sticks out one side now. My face is no more than red any longer but hmmmmmmm burned my hand and arm and didnt know it. The arm will be scarred but the hand is ok.
There will be new pics added to the website right away. Even of the burnt barn. 11 stalls up in smoke but.............we will start anew. I can hardly wait for the first load of shavings to go in. And to hang some of those buckets.
Ok, its 11 and time for bed. Supposed to be really cold tonight so I will have to get out early to get feed to the kids so they warm up. I got lovely hay in last night, timothy mix and alfalfa and the kids are very happy about this. A fellow Cother sold it to us for just the cost and that was a very pleasant surprise. WE got in some rounds today, nice nice hay but at 65 a round, its like eating gold LOL. Still, in this cold, it will do them good to have it.
you guys were my saving grace here. Truly, miraculous. I never in a million years would have expected this but am so so so grateful.
Will keep you all posted on the progress and donations. the barn still standing is known as Mia's barn after ponymom49 and the new barn shall be named The Coth barn. For all of you. Must make a sign for it.
With much love and gratitude from all of us, Lori and four legged friends.
ps. Equinetech, you knock em dead with your exams, dont worry about the wormer. After this frost, a day or so wont harm anything. And give kisses to Luka and tell him to rip open his box. Wouldnt want those peeps to freeze LOL

Lori - that last post really warmed my heart. I keep adding to this list of donations, and I know there are so many that I don't have and haven't been e-mailed to me, and that list is just HUGE. It's really fantastic. I can't even imagine what you're going through. Let me know if there is anything I can do with your regular website as well - I'd be happy to give you a complete redo if you like - to go with the rebuilt barn, perhaps ;) I only wish I could do more!

Whether anyone else can go with me or not, Lori, please know that Mr. ChocoMare and I will be there Saturday morning. Gnalli is trying to finagle her schedule, though, to come with us too.
While we may not be able to bring a lot, we are all good workers, quick with a shovel, rake or other implement of destruction/construction. Just point and we'll go at whatever job needs doing.
I will also be bringing food for you and your family. Just ask Freebird and Ivanator about my cooking skills ;)
