View Full Version : Horse broke his leg... need jingles. *Update 12/28!

My poor pony gelding, Moe, broke his leg earlier tonight... we're not sure how, but the vet is pretty sure it wasn't due to another horse taking a whack at it. I found him when I went to bring in the herd and they all charged up, but Moe just stood there and whickered at me. When I tried to move him (he was bearing weight on it and it looked normal, him just standing there) he couldn't... and then I noticed, as he lifted up his leg, that below his fetlock, it was just kind of waving gently in the breeze.

Moe was the pony I pretty much learned how to sit a horse on; he was a funny thing in that dashing sideways at Mach 10 was a joy for him and finding you laying on the ground, glaring up at him as he stood sniffing at you (and you knew he was laughing, too) made his week. That's not to say he isn't the sweetest boy in the entire world. He's definitely a pocket pony and LOVES to have anything done with him. He was the first "real" horse I had and the first one I brought home.

The vet came out right away, thank goodness, and told us it was broken. She then wrapped it up tight with cotton and vetrap and gave him an IV banamine shot... he is more comfy now and was SUCH a trooper while the vet was wrapping. He was grunting in pain but not moving a millimeter, though he had to lay down about halfway through, and he was sweating through his winter coat.

We get X-Rays tomorrow morning and *hopefully* it is a clean break and not something in fragments.. if it is, he'll need surgery, and I'm not sure we can afford it, which is scary to think about.

Sigh... send jingles PLEASE!

Wendy-- that is SO good to hear. If anyone else has success stories please feel free to share. I could definitely use them!

Moe made it through the night just great (doubtless helped by the checks I made on him every half-hour or so  ). We kept him fairly heavily medicated (bute and banamine) and that helped a lot. There were some points when he came out of it a little and got a bit agitated, but all in all he is a very smart little pony in that he's not putting weight on it and not bouncing around his stall. I suppose it helps that he's been a pasture puff for a year or two now and isn't exactly Mr Fitness. The vet was out about a half-hour ago and took x-rays and is now looking at them back at her facility... should learn what kind of break it is within another few minutes. Jingle for a clean, easy-healing break. :sigh:

The jingles sure seem to be helping so far. Please keep them coming!! Thank you everyone for your support. Not only is it good for Moe, it's good for me too.

*update*

The vet just called and the break is as bad as it can possibly be. She's not even sure if surgery would help him. It is broken in quite a few places and there are fragments and all kinds of other stuff going on.

I don't know what to do. Ever since she called I've been in tears. I truthfully cannot afford surgery and my parents (I'm a bit of a young'un) are not helping.. plus we don't eve know if it will help... the poor little man, I love him so much.

Oh no. I'm SO sorry. You might try casting it and seeing how he handles stall rest etc. Not all horses are good patients, and this would be an absolute long shot, but it has worked in the past. BUT (and this is a big BUT) the horse has to be of the right temperament to stand in a stall for a long, long time. Plus, you have to watch for founder on the other foot, ulcers, and other stall-rest related problems.

Only you can make the decision. Know in your heart that it will be the right one.

Many jingles and hugs to you -

Well here we go. We decided on surgery for little Moe and will just be in debt for the rest of our lives. (Surgery is about 6000 for him, which isn't the kind of money anyone has lying around.) I, and my stepfather who also loves Moe to pieces, just couldn't throw away a life because we didn't have the money to save it. So on to credit cards it will go and we will try to hold some charity stuff, maybe a dinner of some sort, or something. I have a friend who is looking into various equine charities to see if they are able to donate anything at all. We will make it work because we have to. :)

After I posted earlier the vet came back and showed me the X-rays. It is definitely the nastiest break I have seen an x-ray of (not that I've seen many). It was spirally fractured clean through and had several fragments of bone floating around. He also cracked it close to his fetlock in a sort of triangle shape that met up with the full crack through the slightly higher part of the cannon. That did not crack all the way through. The top part of this 'triangle' is very jagged and they are worried about it breaking thru the skin, as the cannon was displaced and moved far to the right of where it would normally connect to the bone.

This morning was super tough as it was basically a decision between putting him down or surgery. The vets said there was absolutely no way possible to just cast it and put him on stall rest and have it heal because it couldn't and wouldn't, ever, because it's in so many pieces and so displaced. It was the worst news possible. I truly thought we were going to have to lose his precious soul for awhile and that was so hard... I truly sympathize with those who have lost their horses

So we brought him in tom the University of MN vet clinic; arrived around 1 (almost 2 hr drive in really heavy traffic, pheww). Brought him in and they took quick stock of the situation and went to work. They did not have the proper plate sizes (he is going to have numerous plates and screws inserted) so the surgery had to be put off until tomorrow morning. Really not that great. They re-splinted him and gave him some fun drugs and then inserted a catheter and inserted some MORE fun drugs. =) They were surprised at what a cheerful fellow he was and everyone already loves hi :) They think he is the sweetest thing in the world, and they're right. After Moe figured out it didn't hurt so much to toddle around on his newly splinted and drugged up leg he took to walking speedy circles around his baseball-field-sized stall, so the vets erected some padded walls and cut his stall size in about half. He is much less mobile now! He also got an epidural for Morphine and will get another around 4 AM.

When we (my good horsie friend came for moral support:) ) left him around 7:30 he was dozing in a Morphine'd state in the center of his re-sized stall and munching on a bit of hay every so often. He is eating and drinking well and peeing and pooping just fine too. Really happy to see that. What I have definitely noticed is that his breathing is very elevated; I expect it's a response to the pain.

He goes into surgery at 10:30 AM tomorrow. Jingle jingle jingle. :) The vet seems to think he has a good chance of FULLY recovering!!! As long as he is just pasture sound and able to bound around with his friends again and live a full and happy life I will be thrilled to bits.

Don't take your horses for granted, tell them you love them every single day. You never know which day will be their last.

Sending lots of Jingles your way. Good for you for going for the surgery and giving him every chance. He sounds as if he has a great spirit which will help him so much in his recovery. This whole thread brought tears to my eyes, as I recently watched a horse that I loved die from a kick to the knee...couldn't possibly have been fixed, there were bones sticking out everywhere through the skin. It's not a sight I will ever forget as long as I live and I wouldn't wish that on anyone. Still no idea what happened to Moe?

Jingles for Moe!! He will pull through better the you think.

I have a filly that was stepped on by her mother when she was two days old. Her right hind cannon bone was broke. Our vet came x-rayed and stabalized the leg and off to New Bolton we went.

Dr. Richardson performed the surgery and plated the leg. Today as a two year old she is sound and has even gone for her first little trail ride. She has even won a small hunter in hand class (pinned high in a larger one). You can see thickening in the leg where the plates are and she has a slight shortening of stride with that leg. I don't do much with her except get on her occasionally and ask her to walk. Next year we'll get more involved undersaddle.

The best thing I did the night of the accident was leaving my cellphone in the trailer for the ride home. When I got home there were two missed calls from New Bolton. When the wrap came off her leg was cold, and they were recommending for her to be put down. When they couldn't reach me they did the surgery, knowing the next morning she would have to be put down if the blood flow didn't return.

The expense was great, but I wouldn't hesitate to do it again.

What I have definitely noticed is that his breathing is very elevated; I expect it's a response to the pain.
Actually, it's probably a side effect of the drugs.

I had a horse with a broken leg - not nearly so bad as you describe, but along with it came a life-threatening tendon infection. The filly was on injectable antibiotics for over 90 days, and then on oral antibiotics for another month or so. Good nursing care and following the vet's instructions to the letter are paramount to the success of the recovery! If you're not sure about how to do something ASK the vet to show you so you can do it correctly. Big jingles for the little guy!!!

Sorry about the lack of updates! I have been staying at a friend's house and hanging out with Moe for the better part of the past two days.

His surgery went GREAT and he came out of it really well. The anesthesiologist commented on how strong his heart rate was during the surgery. He was in for about four hours. I was SOOO worried during the procedure. Oi!

He came out of it around 6 last night and was sooooo happy to see us when we came to see him and just draped himself on me for the better part of the night. Even though he was groggy, he was still happily eating and being Moe.

Today he was a little quieter and his attending physician, Dr Nicholson, said he was a bit warm at his hock area under the cast, but I think just decided to monitor it. He was again VERY happy to see me and I spent most of th day/night with him. He loves to have company. I guess he was pretty vocal about being left alone this morning :)

So, all things considered, he came out of surgery really well and is acting pretty chill about the whole situation. Of course, he IS being spoiled rotten by me and my good horsy friend, so that probably helps!

His leg is now two very large plates and what looked like about 10 screws. I didn't count, though - they showed us the X rays after he got out of surgery last night. It looks TONS better and he is able to hobble around on his cast, which of course everyone has signed. He is definitely the favorite in the barn!!

I took lots of pictures and will have them up later, but as I said, I'm staying at a friend's so I don't have the camera connector thingy.

horse_poor -- if you are around and have time Moe and I both would love company (and Moe says he would very much enjoy the treats. he is an equine vacuum). Most of the time, when my other horsy friend isn't around, it's just sitting in his stall with him and letting him know I'm there. The vets all comment on how he chills out so much when I'm there so it's good to know.

when I left him tonight he was dozing quite tranquilly in the corner of his "mini" stall, but of course gave me many kisses before I left.

I would also just like to add... thank you all so much for your words of support over these past few days. I think I re-read this topic about 40 times during his surgery and it made such a huuuuge difference in my emotional state =P It is good to have so many people rooting for him.

Well, I am happy to say that Moe doesn't need your Peeps, as he has his very own Snowmen Peeps now! :D Along with a container of Jolly Ranchers and Licorice bites (thought he could share them with his mom) and a bag of carrots and a very shiny apple. (I took 5 minutes to pick out the very bestest one I could find)

Unfortunately, Across Sicily was not there. So I did not have the pleasure of meeting her  , so I chatted with Moe. (I left the bag o' treats with a note outside his stall)

I told Moe he was quite a handsome fellow and that he was being a very brave boy. He stopped eatting his hay long enough to acknowledge me with a twitch of the ear or roll an eye ball up to look at me. He was moving around very well in his little stall-I cracked up when I saw how they made his stall a little play pen using bumpers, duct tape, and cones-very cute recovery for a very cute pony! When one of his neighbors would call, he would answer then resume eatting.

He has many many signatures on his cast and I told him he was a very lucky pony to have so many people to want to sign his cast. Every now and then he would turn around and look at his cast like "what is that and why is it with me everytime I move?" but then resumed his hay eatting, splashing in his water bucket a few times.

Moe has got to be one of the cutest ponies I have ever laid eyes on and one heck of a trooper!

Ahhhh Horse_Poor! So sorry to have missed you! What time did you stop by? We would have been there at 3, but got stuck in traffic for the better part of an hour and arrived around 3:45 or so. I saw your note and of course, being the emotional wreck that I am, got all teary-eyed. We definitely enjoyed going through the package of goodies! Moe was very interested in the Peeps but kind of gummed them and spit them in his chow bucket. He did that with most things, even carrots =P which are his very favorite, but he did eat a big carrot from the bag! My good horsy friend (I guess I should introduce her by now, her name is Darrah) and I definitely enjoyed the licorice candies and the jollies. =) Thank you for dropping by!!!! It really means so much.

We opened up Moe's stall door and I made myself into a "gate" so he could see what was going on outside. He was very interested and looked like Christmas had come early. It was busier in the hospital this afternoon. A wee pony that looked a lot like Moe had arrived and was stabled directly across from him, and there were a few more horses that had arrived.

We weren't able to visit with him as long this time :( because of a birthday as well as being TIRED and since the vet hospital was much busier they don't like you hanging around as much. Wah. At any rate, we'll be back tomorrow for a longer visit. He is such a brave boy and doing so well!!! He was back to himself much more today, too, just kind of pottering about and while he spent time with you, he also spent more time with himself =P instead of settling himself into your lap for prolonged periods of time.

All in all, it's coming along, and I couldn't ask for better... doubtless thanks to the many COTH jingles!!!

I will also definitely be working on getting Mr Moe accustomed to his new Peeps ;)

Just a little on Moe! He is 7 years of age and we've had him since he was just a wee (well, wee-er) coming yearling. It was funny how we came about getting him, actually; a horse show I had planned on going to with my then-big horse was cancelled and I was scanning the Classifieds in our local paper when I ran across an ad for "cheap miniature horses" and decided that one of those was JUST the thing we needed. My parents, for some strange reason, agreed to this, and off we went to look at them. (Moe, FYI, is not what I would consider a miniature; he's really much too large by several hands)

The girl who had been breeding/raising/working with them was heading off to college and so needed them gone ASAP. We toddled round the field of a zillion minis, most of whom ran away at first human sighting, but there was this one blue-eyed brown-and-white spotted guy who looked up at us and said "TAKE ME WITH YOU, PLEASE." He was pretty much a rescue case at that point; his feet were horribly overgrown, his hair matted beyond recognition (think nice, fluffy, well groomed pony vs one giant mat of hair... I didn't know horses' body hair could mat!) and he was thin and rather poor looking. So, we said, we'll take this one, and... well, loaded him in our minivan. He was awesome the entire ride home and barely moved an inch.

He was christened Moe right away and placidly put up with our ministrations - first, checking for lice (which he had in spades), body clipping, lots and lots of medicated baths, lots of farriery work, and LOTS of food. (the last part he didn't mind nearly so much) And of course - de-worming and vet work. (I'll always remember the first time we de-wormed him and what came out. ewwww)

Over the years he has blossomed into the pony he is now, and he is just one of the coolest little guys ever. Mischevious (he is prone to stealing hats, books, gloves, random articles of stuff and running off with them, and sincerely enjoys untying shoelaces) and super-trainable, we showed him a little and he won everything he went in. He was also jumped (on a lead, considering that he was a bit wee for that) and honestly has one of the best hunter forms I have ever seen. Knees to the chin and awesome bascule and really tucks those feet. Just pretty.

He was also taught to drive and ride (when I was smaller). He's fairly well trained and extremely smart, and of course, has a big place in our hearts. He was actually kept a stud until about 2 1/2 months ago and has a small baby at home named Indy, short for Indian Summer, out of one of our pony mares. CUTE baby with a REALLY pretty face and put together nicely.

HP - as Darrah said, I won't be able to be there this weekend, due to work :( but at least someone is going to keep company with him! :)

Wasn't the lookalike pony cute??? They found out he had lice this morning, ickkkk. I guess the owners are pretty new to horses, which is why he was at the U anyway - they'd let his feet get so overgrown he couldn't walk anymore. I wish they'd send owner's manuals home with new horse owners.

There seemed to be an influx of ponies/minis at the clinic -- Moe and the lookalike, then there were two minis down in Isolation with strangles, and one that had just left earlier the day we arrived. Weird.

i went and saw momo this morning. he got plenty of carrots and nicker-makers. :]
i gave him a good grooming, lots of scratching/rubbing, finger-combed through his now-unbraided mane, and then i opened the stall door and propped my leg up as his "stall door" so he could see- LOL
he loved it, as usual. especially when the horse with the sesamoid (sp?) fracture left; they said their goodbyes, schnuffled eachother, and the horse left. moe was mr. bundle of energy. so cute

everybody was gooing over how cute he was and how much of a pimp he was and how everybody- including the horses and dogs -has signed his cast. his vet even said that he was her favorite....awwwww!

but we just sat there and chilled, exchanging scritches and treats, and watching everything go by. it was nice.

but they took his catheter out and he's off antibiotics, and he's doing absolutely great. in fact, i'd say the best i've seen him. WHICH MEANS HE GETS TO GO HOME TOMORROW!!!!!!!
but yeah, he seems more like his old little self ;)

TOMORROW!!!!! FREEEEE!!!

Hoping for all the best for your little one. Just a thought, though. I haven't read through all the posts but, are/will you be doing any preventative treatment for his other leg to stave off laminitis? Moe's mode of transport is indeed a minivan without the back seats. The carpet works just great for footing ;) He is well behaved enough that he will not do anything horribly rude, but just for extra safety he gets a half cc of Ace before he goes. He will put his head over your shoulder while you are driving and nicker at cars (okay, maybe I should say 'scream loudly in your ear') that drive by. (He really has quite the potent whinny.)

As a REAL UPDATE Moe is doing AWESOME!!! I could not be more pleased, and neither could the vets. He had his cast changed two weeks ago and the vets said he looks just fantastic under there. He gets x-rayed again in about three weeks. He is perfectly happy at home and does not seem bothered by 24/7 stall rest at all. (we have a turnout rotation schedule that allows one of his buddies to be in the stall next to him pretty much at all times; if he is alone it is for a max of six hours) He has a few toys to play with and lots of hay to keep him satisfied. He is able to march around pretty darn well on his cast and I have been watching him closely for any other signs of lameness, which, so far, he has not exhibited. The vets did not mention anything about watching for this. I think it is because he is able to be so mobile and does not need to be latched into one place. He is off grain entirely, which I think will help a little. He has one teeny cast sore right below his hock, which the vets say is very normal (usually I guess they have 3-4). I check his cast, or someone does, twice a day for any signs of heat or cracking and other such things. So far, everything really is going just peachy-keen for Mr Moe! Must be all those jingles!

He has another cast change in about 3 weeks where he will *hopefully* go from a cast to a splint or a bandage... vets are leaning toward bandage as opposed to another cast! That is great news. :D

Thanks again for all of your jingles, HP for your kind treats (the horses are still eating the peppermints) and for stopping by, and for everyone else who sent a kind thought, a prayer, or a jingle our way. It was super helpful to have everyone here during this; some people who have experienced the same types of things! Thank you all, big time.
