Just keep in mind that kids spike higher fevers than adults do with no long term ill effects. I don't mean to diminish your concern, but having weathered that storm quite a few times (3 boy-children in my household) I want to reassure you that kids bounce back faster than adults.

I also had hallucinations with my fevers when I was a kid - and I turned out okay. Well, okay, that's debatable. :)

Jingles for Justin

When I was in fifth grade, I came down with some bizarre variety of measles and was out of it for several days, I suppose with a high fever. I do recall having halucinations--when I'd recovered, I kept asking my mother about these plans I believed we had for summer vacation, and she had no clue what I was talking about!

Hope Justin is back on track to health really soon!

zed, I understand - COMPLETELY! My middle son just had hernia surgery (at 7) and though I was prepared for it mentally in some ways, you can't really ever be prepared for dealing with seeing them all hooked up to machines and sick or in pain. Like I said - I don't mean to diminish your feelings at all, but I do want to reassure you.

I mentioned my hallucinations when I was little...from the time I was 2 until I was about 7 or 8, with every high fever I would get, I would hallucinate. The dr's didn't know what was wrong, they told Mom I might have MS, or some other god-awful thing. As it turned out, that's just what happened to me when I got sick. I had pneumonia once and hallucinated on and off for days about floating silver letters and pink elephants.

Make sure they keep him well hydrated, and remember, a fever is the body's way of trying to kill off whatever bug he's decided to get.

We'll keep jingling here in PA.

Jingling for Justin!!!

I suffered some pretty severe sicknesses as a child with very high fevers and the doctors never had a solution for the high fevers, just treated it like any other infection, and eventually I would get past it. I've been around for four decades now and I'm jingling that your son will have the same results.

I remember doing that, too... I just don't think I ever admitted it to my Mom... (I was floating above the bed - it was a lovely feeling...)

Jingles!!!!!

My eight yr old son is named Justin...

Last June my daughter became extremely ill- lathargic with a high fever. I called the Doc office, they told me to alternate aspin and ibuprophen. It didn't make much difference and when it went up to 104 I demanded to see the doctor. While in the exam room fever spiked to 106.2, this was 30 min after a fever reducer suppository. We went by ambulance to ER and she was admitted for almost a week with a rare and serious kidney infection.

She's fine now thank goodness but man is it scary!!! I know how you feel :(

My oldest son spiked scary high fevers as an infant and toddeler, once up to 105. That time, they could not find anything wrong with him-must have been "just a bug." My youngest son was hospitalized at 18 months with bacterial or viral meningitis (which ever is the least contagious) and having to hold him down for the spinal tap about did me in-I think they made me leave the room.
Kids can scare the crap out of us, but they are amazingly resiliant!

The viral is the least deadly and I lived thru it as an adult 7 years ago. I would not wish that off on a child - it is a horrible sickness!

Jingling for Justin. High fevers/hallucinations are scary, but your son is in the right place at the hospital where they will take good care of him. When my son was 5, he ran a very high fever. I called the doctor when he told me he saw our deceased dog fly by the window with wings. It turned out to be pneumonia and he made a full recovery.
Little kids are tough! Sending big hugs to Justin, and to you, too, Mom! To keep it horse related, my horses send jingles too!

Jingles for Justin, you and the rest of your family...

All four of my boys got higher fevers than my one girl. Of the boys, my oldest spiked scary fevers for no apparant reason. He's 39 now and a husband and father...he still spikes those nasty fevers. They don't happen often but, when one hits, it's always a worry to me. He is fine and we've learned to be still and wait for it to pass.

You and Justin are in my prayers.

back in the mid 60's, I had scarlett fever (which was just about unheard of)we had an old time doc that made house calls. I refused anything except cold chicken with so much salt on it a normal person would choke and sweet tea. With ever fever over 101 I've ever had, I have the same hallucinations. Still do. Assuming they've ruled out all the nasty meningitis type stuff, just hang in there. Fever is the body's way of getting the immune system in gear. He's getting the best care available, so while he is being taken care of by the wonderful nurses (we are the worlds best baby sitters by the way) you take some care of yourself, eat properly and get some rest. Just be there to comfort him, love really is the best medicine.

I everyone wow, you all are amazing, I am home right now letting the dogs out, getting ready to go bk to the hospital, his dad is w/ him right now...

He was in good spirits for most of the day til it got dark that is when it all starts, his fever went down as of 1pm this afternoon, but spiked up to 103 as of 6pm, they are alternating motrin and tylenol right now, and they did take him off the I.V drip as long as he is drinking, he ate for the first time in 5 days today which was so good too see...

The infectious disease dr, came in and says after looking at all his test results, he has a major ear and sinus infection, along w/ hives from head to toe which is causing him to be like this, he has puss coming out of his ears and eyes, and they have him on heavy duty antibiotics right now, he'll get another dose tomarrow morning, we're hoping for no fever spikes tonite, and they are hoping one more day and then he can go home... So I am hoping for him to come home soon...

When my oldest was born he was very sick and had a spinal tap for a bacterial infection after his circumcistion...

Thanks everyone and I will update you tomarrow as soon as I know something...

Phew...that sounds like they have it under control. One thing to watch for, since you mentioned the hives, is allergies to medications. When my younger brother was about 5 he also spiked a really high fever, then got hives and got progressively worse until he was so stiff all over he literally could not walk or move his arms. It turned out he was allergic to both the amoxicillin and the baby aspirin he had been given to treat his fever and other symptoms. Once they changed his meds he made a rapid recovery. This happened at a top NYC hospital, and he had excellent doctors. His allergic reaction, however, had manifested itself in an unusual way, so they had trouble figuring out what the problem was. Allergies would not explain the sinus problem, but I would be mindful of a possible allergic reaction given the hives.
I hope your little guy makes a quick recovery.
