I all but live on their chicken soup whenever I go home....their hot chocolates are amazing (if they change the machine - otherwise sometimes *gasp* they are not solid sugar drinks!)

I know what a chesterfield is too!

This is because I went to school in Ithaca, NY. Turns out that the only Ivy League school that has any redeeming sports value is Cornell's hockey...because they get the Canadians that don't make it in the pros or in Canadian schools. I also have several Canadian colleagues. I also considered a position at UT Zoology.

But my first real introduction was Second City TV. With the infamous Bob and Doug MacKenzie. Simply brilliant.

Nov. 22, 2006, 07:33 PM
I will preface this by saying that I am Canadian and Mr. JP is formerly a Canuck.

One Saturday morning last winter, we were in the barn, eagerly awaiting a delivery of 4 tons of hay from CT. (And possibly channeling Reynard Ridge ;) ). We had a busy day planned that would end at some fancy dinner party and gala, where I was to sit next to a well-known magazine editor that I had wanted to meet for some time.

Aforementioned hay was supposed to arrive at 9am. Weather was fine and our half mile mountainous driveway was plowed and sanded. And of course I had informed the hay broker they needed to come in a 4WD tow vehicle to navigate the terrain safely.

We waited and waited and waited and checked messages. Nothing. Finally, I reached the hay broker who called the hay delivery guy who finally called me back at noon. “Yeah, we had some problems getting the trailer hooked up, but now we’re good to go.” Really. He is about an hour drive away. 1 pm goes by, 2 pm goes by and it starts to snow. Hard. By the time this joker arrives, at 4 pm, driveway is covered and slick. Not only that, but he is driving an early 70s pickup that I swear bends in the middle, only RWD, balled tires, and… NO BRAKES ON THE TRAILER WITH 4T of HAY!!! As experienced Canadian drivers, we say, maybe we should do it another day. Of course, dufus has come all this way and has to try it. He gets about 300 feet up the driveway and the trailer starts to slide backwards and takes the truck with it into a tree/ditch. Rig is now jackknifed across the driveway.

So Mr. JP gets the tractor. No dice. We call our friends with the big trucks. No dice. We call professional towing company. Can’t get out to our place until tomorrow. Oh, and by now it’s almost 6pm and we’re supposed to be at the party by 6:30. But….. even if we could get dressed and out of there in time, one small problem: we couldn’t get out of our driveway. (Oh, and minor problem... our disabled neighbor who shares the driveway couldn’t back home). So, we call the party hosts and explain the situation. Then, we call more friends and borrow someone’s truck to take Mr.Dumbhaydeliveryguy to the train station (did I mention that with his chainsmoking, swearing and wacko horse care advice, he had been joyful company for the last several hours??)

Finally we get home, showered, dressed and over to the party, about 4 hours late, as most people are leaving . The first person I see at the Front door is a fellow former Canadian, who spent his youth in the Ottawa valley. He of course has heard the saga of our day, which is by now is much more convoluted than we intended. He just looks at us, shakes his head and says, “Hay, EH?!”

Fellow Canucks... we may have a problem here - it seems as though some of the Yankees have broken our secret code.....

They seem to have discovered what toques and poutine are. God help us. We must revert to our back up plan - feeding them one or two maple sugar candies to ensure they go into diabetic shock. This method can also be used to weed out the true Candians in the group, as we all know only Canadians can eat vast multitude of these delicous treats....

YE don't know nearly enough! As a good Connecticut Yankee, I grew up on maple sugar candy. No such thing as TOO MUCH. And I may have moved to the midwest, but I made sure to introduce my flatlander daughter to the real stuff at a young age; corruped her for life.

I am too lazy to read through this entire thread to see if this has been mentioned yet-- does Erin let the Canadian Invasion threads stay up or do they get deleted?

Butter tarts- sort of like pecan pie with optional pecans, raisins or walnuts. VERY sweet butter/suger pie filling in pie crust tarts. So sweet your teeth with instantly fall out...its totally worth it....

There's so many Canadians in the Wichita area that we get real malt vinegar at all the local dives. I work at the secret Bombardier test center here in Wichita but it's not so much fun since we lost the stealth flying skidoos.

Do you mean to say there are no All Dressed chips in the US
Oh you poor sad sweet darlings. I'm so sorry.
No butter tarts. No Smarties. No Coffee Crisp. And, limited access to Timmies.
I am starting to feel really sad for all of you. Even more sad than after your last election :(

Hmmm...how do I describe it. Well let's see they don't use pepperoni on pizza, they use salami. Everything is put under the cheese. So it looks like a cheese pizza except everything is hidden underneath. ;)

They roll the extra dough that is left over and it gets put on top of the pizza. I have no idea why they do that. I was told it keeps the top of the box from going down and squishing the pizza. You can eat the rolled ball of dough though. It tastes like the pizza crust.

Oh yes, they use knives and forks to eat pizza. Eating pizza with your hands is a no no ( at least in Quebec). One time I went over to my aunt's house in Quebec and she made pizza (yep with salami) and I started eating pizza with my hands and I thought my aunt was going to have a heart attack.

Yep, my mom makes the tarte au sucre (sugar pies). I love eating meat pies with ketchup.

I did not know that's what canadian pizza was..... At most of our local Pizza places it has bacon, pepperoni and mushrooms.. and yes we certainly eat it with our hands. Although if it's too hot I do eat pizza with a knife and fork!!

Malt vinegar on fries is a UK tradition... You put it on fish and chips of course!!

I am a good friend. I make sure to see Limerick once a year so I can take with me a large box of Coffee Crisp, Smarties and Wine Gums. I wouldn't want her to suffer would I? Trying to figure out how to get Timmies coffee down there though for her horse show mornings....

They don't use Canadian bacon? (Ham just isn't the same thing, I don't care what pizza makers here say.)

I thought eating pizza with a knife and fork was a UK thing too. At least the last time I was in England we ate our pizza with knife and fork.

I think it tastes better eaten US style, though :D

Although there used to be a pizza chain down here that served pizza in a pan with the crust on top. Like the old phrase "pizza pie." You had to eat it with a fork ... or spoon!

Just wanted to let you know that 90% (just a wild guess) eat pizza with their hands. I only know of two people that use a knife and fork and one of them is my 81 yr. old father - so what does he know?

Also, you can't buy an aero bar in the States either. When I go to visit a close friend I always have to take a dozen of each, Coffee Crisp and Aero.
How do you like your coffee?? answer: crisp :)

It has been a pleasure invading our southern friends again this year.

Errr ... not really any of my business but I hope when you're 81 you'll know a bit of respect. 81 gets younger every year.

OK, You are making me homesick, not to mention hungry (I'm 5 months pregnant - how am I going to send my hubby out to get a coffee crisp?)! Anyone want to send a Canadian Care Package to NC?

Banner, you send me your address via pm with your care package list and I will happily forward it to you. After all, that's what we Canadians do. And hey, I eat my pizza with a knife and fork and no I am not 81.

FYI, expats--if you have a World Market franchise in your area, they have a whole section of British Candy. You can find Aeros and Smarties there.

Wellspotted,

How dare you imply that I do not respect my parents! Just because I comment on the fact that he doesn't know how to eat pizza does not give you the right to pass that comment. I'll have you know that I happen to be their caregiver as they have both had major heart attacks and one is recovering from a broken hip. Sun shine smiley or not, I suggest you keep your unjust comments to yourself.

Oh NO! Were did the care package go????:(

There are a lot of Canadians in NC. We even have a Canada Day party with collegues at work every year, and celebrate the Canadian Thanksgiving.

I haven't been home in over a year though, and it isn't looking like I will get there until next summer now.
