View Full Version : Canter Horse At Risk

Here is another Canter horse in danger. :( I hope they can find her a home. I don't know much about racing but it looks like she has some nice bloodlines. It doesn't say what type of fracture she sustained.

Here's her pedigree: http://www.pedigreequery.com/lou+lous+a+gamer
EXTREMELY URGENT: Lou Lou is in Danger!
T06-2166-10. TRAINER-OWNED MARE, Bay, 15.3 hands, 4 years old
Fans of Alydar and Affirmed should check out "Lou Lou's a Gamer": Alydar is her grandfather on her dad's side, and Affirmed is her great-granddad on her dam's side! Though she arrived at the track very thin and in need of TLC, look underneath the shaggy coat and lanky frame and you'll see a very special horse. Lou Lou is very cute and friendly - some young children (all under age 9) came to visit the shedrow, and Lou Lou quietly and gently lowered her head to nuzzle the little ones; she seems to love kids. **Lou Lou has just sustained a fracture in one leg and is at risk; she MUST GO - $700 OBO.** Call Carlos at 603-275-2640. (trainer can be hard to understand on the phone - please contact CANTER if you need assistance:

Count me in for $100 toward her purchase price if we can find someone to take her and keep her. I wish we had more room. :-( I saw her at the track yesterday and though she is scruffy, she has a kind eye and with time and tlc, she'll be lovely.

I usually don't have much to say other than that they can come stay here but I am appalled at the condition this horse is in... and ***$700*** for a horse with a fracture?!!
She looks like she has already BEEN thru a meatgrinder.
Can we get more info on the fracture? Sorry, I just cannot make the call, I could not be civil.

She's located at Suffock Downs. But I'm not sure what's going to happen if she isn't placed by the end of the week... The track closes on Saturday.
I'm slightly taken back by the pricetag... she looks to be a sweet mare, but there are sound, fat horses coming off the track for less money..
 I wish I could put her on my trailer when I go down tomorrow morning!!

17handtb Posted on the Canter Cuties Thread that the vet's feeling was that after 6 months of stall rest, the fracture should be healed and she'll be good to go. It's very fresh - could've happened this morning.
That's all I know at the moment...
Edited to add a piece of 17handtb's post in the other thread: "The scoop is that Lou Lou has a very new - possibly as recent as this morning, when she worked out on the track - cannon bone fracture. The vet stated she will need 6 months of stall rest, but he believes she will be "absolutely fine" for pleasure and flatwork after she recuperates."

I can contribute to her bail, she looks so sweet. But frankly, I am kind of disgusted at the thought of handing $700 for her over to someone who ran her in iffy shape, broke her, and now is threatening to send her to the meatman unless someone else pays double meat price. I know, I know... it's the owner-- not CANTER setting the price, but this mare is a giveaway at this time of year, in that shape, where she's located.

My thoughts exactly...
and I would be willing to take her and rehab her if we could get her here. But w/a coffin bone fracture.. sheesh. That's a long ride on a broken bone.

Believe me, I hear what you guys are saying and am in total agreement on the price. I am going to try to call the trainer tomorrow and do what I can to get him to come down. But...without going into a lot of detail...it will NOT be easy.
Poor Lou Lou is in the absolute wrong barn to end up with this kind of injury. :(
Several kind souls have PT'd with offers of $ toward her bail money, but she still needs a permanent home; if anyone can give her one, assuming her purchase price is covered, could you please PT me? Thank you!

I feel so bad for this mare and wish I could do something for her, but I don't have my own farm and board the 2 horses that I have and most def cannot afford another board. I would be more then able and happy to also contribute some to her purchase price.
I also by far agree that the price is very questioning with the problems that she currently has. To me that is saying that the owner just wants as much money for her as possible and doesn't give a hoot where she goes and what happens to her.
After taking sometime and really looking at her picture, I can say that with some time, TLC, grooming, and weight she would be a very nice looking her. Also, I have come to the conclusion that her eyes are very experessive and to me she is saying "I'm really sweet and a kind soul, but please help me". I see a very gentle and kind eye, but also to me there is an experession that is trying to reach out and ask for help.
I really hope this mare can be saved by someone and have a life long home. Like I stated before I will help any way I can and will be more then heppy to contribute some to her purchase price if someone can take her home with them.
Please PT me if I can help out in any way.

I can contribute $75 towards her bail. If you look beyond her nasty coat, I don't think she looks as bad as some are saying. She seems to have good bone and a very nice eye. Looks like she has a lot of growing and filling out to do. Her breeding looks good as well. Poor girl...I hope someone can give her a home.
Thanks to everyone at Suffolk for all they are doing to help these horses find homes!

I saw her in person on Sunday, and she is a lovely little mare. Very sweet and much more attractive than her picture shows. My heart goes out to the poor young girl who vetted her planning to bring her home. I brought my own Canter cutie home Sunday and don't have a stall for her to rehab in. From the information I've heard...this trainer isn't one that will decide to winter her or give her away, he'll cut his losses however he can. If anyone has a stall and the ability to rehab her, I'm sure she'll pay you back in spades.

Find out more about the fracture if you can--sounds like a hairline or some such for her to still be standing.

I will take her and rehab her if we can figure out how to get her bought and down here - IF she can travel on the leg. Mr. EqT saw her pic last night and said it made him sick to think she might "get sold on" and that he would build her a run-in with a gate that closes it off but that she could still see the other horses. Otherwise we are full up for winter.
I hope COTH can pull this one off. He calls our daughter Lou Lou.

Money Talks and BS Walks!
Hand the man a few hundred bucks (more than the meatman would) and see what he does.
Now of course we'd need to find a home for her. Anybody?
We had a hairline fracture horse at the track a few months back and the horse recovered wonderfully for flatwork and more. The trainer even trailered the horse to its new home.

I'll pick her up if the bail is raised!
I personally don't have $700 on me to get her today while I'm at the track - but I'd be more then happy to go back this week to get her (Suffock is less then 2 hours from me). And I do have a stall until she could get to NC.
Now my wheels are turning on the best way to get her to NC... There is a chance I could make the drive myself...
Lets just focus on getting the bail money raised..I would stop in to see her while I'm at Suffock this morning, but I think it would be too depressing to not be able to take her with me right this minute!!

Ok.. here is what I have.
Mapleshade has horses coming down from Suffolk TOMORROW. If there is room on the trailer, it would be a straight shot down to me, which of course is best. So...
This is what we need to know.
1) What is the bottom line we can get her bailed out for? Again, I cannot talk to this guy, I just cannot. Who can do this?
2) We need to determine can she travel tomorrow. Is there anyway to find out what vet saw her and and least get an idea of what condition she is in?

Me too. $700 for a horse with a broken leg that will need 6 months of stall rest (read 6 months of eating up money in feed and vet bills and cleaning with NO guarantee she'll ever be sound and what about the laminitis spector??)
Are these people CRAZY? Never mind it was a rhetorical question. if they are that desperate to let her go I'd offer the meat price ($400 tops) in cash.

You were so generous to offer her a home - just thought the shorter trip might be better for her leg.

That's kind of the way I would look at it. $400 for the horse, by the time you spend $500 to ship her (if she's going far) and $$ for a heath certificate you just paid almost $1000.
There was another horse (still on CANTER Mid-A I think) that is in pink "needs to go ASAP" and I called and left FOUR messages for the trainer and she's yet to call me back. so I have a hard time having sympathy for some of these trainers, although I feel aweful for the horses. :( I'm really glad there are so many great people on COTH willing to donate money or service to get an at-risk horse out of the track.
IMHO I think those trainers who don't want the horse (injured, unridable, needs rehab) should give them away to a good home. BUT....I know that "why GIVE them away when they can make $300 from the meat man" I don't get it

OK, ANOTHER update...! I'm out of breath!
The 16-year-old girl who came with her mom to vet Lou Lou yesterday (when the fracture was discovered) just called me. She is back at the track with Mom and they just bought Lou Lou to save her life! They may even be able to keep her - they will know tonight if their layup boarding situation is going to come through. (this is a different person from the other local home who volunteered to come get her)
I am just bowled over that someone so young did something so noble. She said her father and mother were reduced to tears hearing Lou Lou's predicament and said, "We have to save that mare." They even let the daughter take the day off from school so they could rush to the track. :D
EqTrainer...will definitely keep you posted if something changes....thank you so much for wanting to help her. Lou Lou's luck just may be changing, finally!

T06-2186-10. TRAINER-OWNED MARE, Bay, 16 hands, 8 years old
"Line of Duty" is a very special mare whose connections really love her, and for good reason! This beautiful girl has a fantastic disposition, and is so intelligent that her owner says she recognizes the sound of his car and will come bounding to the front of her stall to greet him. Owner absolutely hates to part with her but is forced to after being seriously injured in an accident. Line of Duty has a big, most impressive build - people have mistaken her for a colt! - with a powerful rear end and distinctively Warmblood looks. She has been a turf horse throughout her career, so has minimal mileage on her legal bowed a tendon 3 years ago but it healed fine and hasn't bothered her since. Owner says she's "a cream puff" to ride - even goes in a D bit! She is a cribber, but controlled with a collar. This is a horse who will make a lifetime riding partner or premier sporthorse mama (she's a granddaughter of Danzig, out of a Bucksplasher mare) - don't miss out. Price Reduced: $700 negotiable, excellent home a must. Call Frank Foley at 617-283-0146.
Edited to add the NE CANTER info, hope that is ok with CANTER and with COTH.... If not, I will delete. Let me know!

THANK YOU to everyone who is helping out this filly.. you don't have to know much to realize how much her rehabilitation is going to cost, so not having to absorb her (IMO outrageous!) price tag makes a big difference. But in the end, as Jilltx pointed out, I suspect we will feel she is Priceless :)

There is no reason the trainer SHOULDN'T accept the $500 for Raw General - let's just pray that, after the meet ends and the poor horse is still sitting there, he finally will. Rest assured we'll be keeping a close eye on the situation. Sometimes, though, it's a waiting game (which is so frustrating).

Having just lost my beloved Appaloosa who never showed any symptoms until he was rushed to surgery -- CANCER diagnosised by College Point, TX lab that reviewed the slides after 6 hours of surgery -- I wish I was in shape to help. He crossed the Rainbow Bridge. I loved my Appy partner so much I didn't care if he would have been rideable or not -- Surgeon said he was a medical miracle - that if 5 horses had what he did the other 4 would have been long, long gone. He looked to be in the peak of health: a bit too fat, well muscled because it was a mild winter and he arrived at the surgery and went "Oh trailer ramps don't do those and jumped from a standstill on the trailer 5 foot broad jump to the driveway. He was always a tough, strong-minded, stoic, courageous, wonderful partner.
Having said that -- I hope Lou-Lou can find a loving and caring place to rehab. How people can earn money off the backs of a horse who has a kind and willing heart, and then not do right by them boggles my mind. I never understand how people can race some of the Tbreds into the ground and then not do right by them. Lou-Lou has a kind eye, but it also looks a bit sad.
I may be able to send a small check to help Lou-Lou. I will keep reading the thread.

That makes me SO MAD about the $800 for Raw General! When I was there this morning, Carlos was trying to put him on my trailer for $600. (at the time we thought he had a place to go, so I didn't take the bait).
I'll tell you: of all the shed rows I've visited at Suffock in the past couple weeks, Carlos's horses were the most misreble I've seen... Most were weaving, almost all had their ears pinned and snapped at whoever walked by... and not a scrap of hay in sight. Really just heartbreaking.
Lou Lou was an absolute star today! When I was introduced to her, she put her head down and waited to be loved on. She loaded right up on my trailer, and shipped home very well - walked right into her stall, and took in her new surroundings :) She has almost no idea what to do with hay - started eating the wood shavings instead. But I think she's starting to figure out what it's for :)
I set up her fractured leg with poultice this afternoon, and the whole time I was tending to her, she just rested her muzzle on my head  She is such a love! I can't wait to hear how she settles in to her new, warmer home!
I'll try to take some pictures tomorrow (it's pouring rain today) - she is just lovely, and will be breathtaking once she puts on some much needed weight!!! :)

how at the same racetrack there can be wonderful trainers who care about their horses (ie Noboxwine's) and some like Lou Lou's and RG's who obviously do not care at all about them, except to make money off of them. Obviously, some owners do not care or do not supervise at all. Isn't there anything like peer pressure between trainers or just "if your horses are not well cared for, they won't win" type of attitude?
I have never been at a racetrack and absolutely do not know the ins and outs, but I am appalled at RG's situation. Please tell me that it is scarce nowadays, that most trainers at the big tracks really want the best for the horses in their care?

Re: Raw General: It's a delicate situation. He is not going to let him go for under $800 at the moment, because he thinks there will be a crowd of buyers coming this weekend waving wads of cash at him; I think he also knows people are worried about the horse, and is taking advantage of that as much as possible. :sigh:
If we wait until after the weekend and then re-offer the $500....he will need to ship out soon...hoping the Light of Reason will shine and we can get Raw General out of there into the safe placement awaiting him.

I have gotten quite a few of Carlo's mares over the past few years and also mares from other tracks who didnt know what hay was and wanted to eat anything (including their stalls) instead of hay. I just wanted to pass along what I have done and what has worked....a haynet seems to work well...some of these horses are only used to eating hay when its off the ground..even though they have no problem eating their bedding, I have also fed hay in the feed tub with grain on it and finally a section of hay on the ground with grain sprinkled on it. The haynet seemed to work the best and I would lower it over time until it was nearly on the ground, then I put the hay in the same corner where the haynet was. Some of these horses also dont know what grass is...they will stand for hours outside with cushy grass under their feet and never take a bite..but if you handgraze them they eat?
AppJumpr08

Norcrest -
Thanks!! Lou Lou seems to have figured it out, but it's good information to have for anyone taking a horse from someone like Carlos :) It was so sad - both Lou Lou and Abby (Witto Road) had such a small amount of food in their systems when I picked them up that there was no manure in the trailer when they arrived home...and none in their stalls until a good 5 hours after they arrived and ate their first flake of hay. It's just not right for a horse's bowel to be that empty!!

The buyer who was there yesterday has committed to the $500 for RG at any time. And there is a safe spot waiting for him (though logistics to get him there are still being worked out).
We'll be coming to the track this weekend ready to do battle!
It's really hard because as much as we all want to save RG (who I admit has my heart...he truly WOULD be home with me if I had the stall/$ for another horse)...we can't set a dangerous precedent with this trainer. If he thinks he can extort well-meaning people into giving him outrageous amounts of money for injured horses, it will open Pandora's Box for all future horses needing to get out of his barn.

She is LOVELY and she is also a tremendous athlete. She comes out of her stall head up, eyes bright, looking around like, "Where are we going? What do you need me to do?"
She is in very good shape and has an owner who really loves her. It's hard for him to sell her but he is forced to by his situation (he was badly hurt in an accident - a loose horse collided with him at the track, yikes! - and has been out of work).
She is still at Suffolk but needs to leave soon as the track is closing. Give her owner a call. He loves to talk about her and I'm sure he can tell you all you need to know about her.

FI, I think you will find this, as Louise alluded to, at most tracks. There's a huge gap between the excellent care many trainers provide their racehorses, and the lacking care a small but unfortunately present minority give (or don't give).
I will say that the good trainers at the track (which are most of those we deal with) are well aware of who is not so good. And they don't approve, either...but in general, hands are tied.
how at the same racetrack there can be wonderful trainers who care about their horses (ie Noboxwine's) and some like Lou Lou's and RG's who obviously do not care at all about them, except to make money off of them. 17handtb is absolutely right -- we must be patient and shrewd, and not let our hearts get in the way. Carlos is just doing what any cunning business man would do, trying to make as much $$ as he can (we just all wish it wasn't ultimately at the horses' expense!!!)
It's also very important that we don't publically bash trainers like this, even though our views are so different:
Remember, if trainers catch wind of derogatory and slanderous remarks being made about them on the internet, they very well may refuse to do any business at all with the Little Girl Brigade and instead opt for the knacker man, who passes no negative judgment.
I just found out very unexpectedly that I have tomorrow and Saturday off -- if anybody needs trailering in the NH/northern MA area, I will be available...

Its the same way in the bird business too; you shop the first day of the sale for selection and the last day for price. Probably that way in any business. It would be nice to think that every trainer could see an offer as "fair" and go for it, but, as they say, if wishes were horses.....

App and I are meeting up tomorrow morning, armed with $600 ($500 from the thwarted donor who came yesterday, plus a little extra) and App's trailer. She and her friend have generously offered RG a place to stay until he can go to his eventual rescue destination (travel arrangements still TBD).
Please jingle that things will go smoothly so he can get out safe and sound!
And yes, all of the other horses from RG and Lou Lou's trainer still need homes (there has been some interest in Guerdon and If It's Our Destiny, so keep your fingers crossed for them)...supposedly he wants to cut deals now, and he especially likes package deals, if anyone is eyeing a duo or trio!

Hey Kirstuva - I know you! I should be driving to the farm to load up for the show tomorrow, and instead just had to check the boards one last time:)
Pasteur won't enjoy working at midnight, but then neither will I!
So to answer 17handTB & AppJumpr, we're bringing the mare Double Torsion to our farm - she wasn't listed but lovely Katie pointed me in her direction. Anyone seen her in person? Always scary buying one off a little camera phone pic
Of course Destiny is still calling to me - so please someone take her! I have too many as it is, but am such a sucker for a sad eye!

Nov. 9, 2006, 06:29 PM
Her name is Double Torsion (I think?). She wasn't listed. She's a pretty grey mare, 16H 5yo and that's all I know ;) I am not actually buying her, but she's coming to my barn. We have a bunch of OTTB's of all ages that are now show Hunters and the BO just can't seem to get enough! I can't blame her, they are pretty darn cute.
AppJumpr, maybe you'll see her since she'll already be loaded when they come to you to get Lou Lou (she's getting picked up from you last, right?). Then you'll see her before we do!! Give her some kisses for us, we can't wait until she gets here. I can't imagine what we'll call her, what a name! Doto? JK, that doesn't sound very nice ;)

Also, the mare with the little crooked face was adopted by our own Doublete/Katie. She will be on her way to broodmare heaven in the next week or so.
Katie has been working TIRELESSLY to help anyone who needs it . She will house horses waiting on trucks and has the time to do it. If you need help just email or call me and I'll hook you up with Katie (she has no computer access).

 Raw General is paid for and will leave Suffolk Downs later this morning on the AppJumpr08 Express (escorted by Barnfairy and their other OTTB-loving friend, Elizabeth). I got to meet everyone this morning and they are just as nice in person as they are on COTH!
RG's trainer took $600 and wasn't too bad about it...all things considered.
Unfortunately, he listed a new horse who is in some peril, and to make it even harder, is an absolute darling (AppJumpr and Barnfairy can attest):
His name is Consequential and he is an 8-year-old gelding, 16 hands, chestnut with a blaze and tall stockings. He has BIG front ankles, with yucky scabs on them, but they appear cold and set. He would make a really sweet trail/husband horse. Price is $700 now - likely to be $500 within a day or two. PT me if you'd like details. Mr. 17handtb graciously escorted me to the track this AM, possibly to ensure *I* was not buying Raw General for myself  and took some photos that he'll send me in a little bit, so I'll post Consequential's pic when I have it.
Other updates:
-Carlos also listed 2 new horses that seem quite nice; a handsome liver chestnut gelding who is over at the knee but doesn't appear unsound ($1000), and a big, beautiful near-black mare ($2500) whose legs look clean. Will have pics in a bit.
-Hollywood Jam is now $1000. He has some swelling in one front ankle and is stocked up, so he will need some time off ... but he is a beaut!
-Pop Tucker is $500 to a good home (not to tempt you, Norcrest ;))

Good news: it's official, Raw General has left the track!!! And not a moment to soon. :)
He was a little hesitant to get on the trailer until he saw that there was HAY in there (remember hay, big fella?) and then he was instantly happy. 'Not a peep out of him for the rest of the trip.
I sure do hope that someone picks up Consequential this weekend. He'll need some TLC for those fresh cuts on his ankles, but his 10+++ temperament will make it well worth it. 'Easily husband- or children's horse material after a break & time away from the track.
Kudos to 17handtb and Doublete for their continued efforts to negotiate with this trainer, who found it pertinent to inquire of me as to whether or not my "chompers" (aka TEETH) are "real"...

Guys...Ellen and I just got back from the track.
Very good news:
-Consequential and Hollywood Jam both went home with a big-hearted woman
-Little Miss Mary, Skipping My Trial, and Winchendon Prince all found homes
Also, Pop Tucker's trainer is taking him home to his farm in RI. He's still for sale but not in any danger. (owner admitted he "has a soft spot for him")
VERY BAD NEWS:
-Banker's Red (http://canterusa.org/newengland/sale/images-salehorses/BankersRed.JPG), Tactical Al, (http://canterusa.org/newengland/sale/images-salehorses/TacticalAl.JPG) Puddle Time (http://canterusa.org/newengland/sale/images-salehorses/PuddleTime.jpg), and a third filly - not on the web site, a sweet 2-year-old with knee chips named Nudge Naomi - are all in immediate jeopardy. (Banker's Red and Tactical Al are both on the owner's farm in Swansea, MA; Nudge Naomi and Puddle Time are still at the track.)
Banker's Red, Tactical Al, and the 2-year-old are due to be picked up by the meat dealer in a couple of days (the trainer agreed to give us 2 days to place them, but has already given Naomi's papers to the dealer, who offered $500 for all 3 horses, total...trainer confirmed dealer will be taking them to auction.)
Puddle Time has not been sold to the dealer yet, but must move ASAP.
If anyone can help, please call the trainer ASAP....if you need assistance, call Ellen at 781-354-6291; I have to hop a flight for a business trip tonight though I will be on e-mail later so you can PT any time after 8 PM, but best to call Ellen in a jam, as time is limited.
TACTICAL AL (http://canterusa.org/newengland/sale/images-salehorses/TacticalAl.JPG):
TRAINER-OWNED STALLION, Gray, 16.1 hands, 10 years old
"Tactical Al" is an attractive, classic-looking TB stallion who could make a very nice sporthorse sire crossed with draft, QH, or Appy mares! Was a very good racehorse and has much quality to pass along. Does have old osselets (ankle calcification). Price: $200 OBO, may be a giveaway. On the farm in Swansea, MA. PUDDLE TIME (http://canterusa.org/newengland/sale/images-salehorses/PuddleTime.jpg):
TRAINER-OWNED STALLION, Chestnut, 15.1 hands, 8 years old
"Puddle Time" would make a fantastic sport pony sire; he's awfully cute and very nicely put together. Sweet and cuddly...loves to be hugged and to get kisses! This boy is athletic and attractive; will make a great sire for someone, or geld him and show him on the flat (he does have an old ankle, so no jumping). Price: $200 OBO, may be a giveaway. At Suffolk Downs. Call Lori at 508-951-2385; if you don't reach her, call Lloyd Lockhart at 617-852-4166 and tell him you must speak to Lori ASAP about Puddle Time

BANKER'S RED: (http://www.canterusa.org/newengland/sale/images-salehorses/BankersRed.JPG)
TRAINER-OWNED FILLY, Liver chestnut, 15.3 hands, 3 years old
"Banker's Red" is a very nicely proportioned youngster with some classy breeding: granddaughter of both the legendary Forty Niner and the champion handicapper Explosive Red! She does have screws in her right cannon bone, so may not be suited to strenuous work such as jumping or eventing. She should be fine as a light riding horse on the flat, and what a NICE sporthorse mom she'll be with her coloring, conformation, and pedigree! Price: $200 OBO, may be a giveaway. On the farm in Swansea, MA. Call Lori at 508-951-2385; if you don't reach her, call Lloyd Lockhart at 617-852-4166 and tell him you must speak to Lori ASAP about Banker's Red

He has large ankles and will most likely only be pasture sound.
He is GELDED, not a stallion anymore!!
Does that help? Anyone want a SWEET, beautiful boy for a companion?
Trainer said would be okay to sit on and MAYBE light trail riding and sweet enough to be nice pet!!

I'm in the same boat as alot of others...willing to offer a home, but I live waaaay down in FL. the cost of shipping would be more than what they would let the horse sell for. :sigh:
I think the other problem too, as far as other people purchasing out of state buying an "at risk horse" is that even if they take $400 for the horse, you pay $500-600 to ship it down and then someone just spent $1000 on an unsound horse...where they could've spent a little more and gotten one that is sound. you know?
its tough. if I had all the money in the world I'd go out and buy one of those 30,000 acre parcels in Ocala...split it up into 300 pastures and just have ya'll drop off all the CANTER rescues! *reality check* I live in 5 acres....sorry :(
EqTrainer
Nov. 12, 2006, 08:39 AM
Why YES, Tikigator, that is exactly how it works. Look at Lou Lou. I think there was about $400.00 donated and Chesters Mom picked up the difference. But shipping her is still $500.00. And she has a broken cannon bone and will be on stall rest for 6 months.. and then I'm sure just turned out for 6 more months. THEN I might, just might, have a horse sound enough to do flatwork or trail ride.
So why did I do it? Because it needs to be done. NOT so that I could get a sound riding horse, but because Lou Lou needed someone to want her. Otherwise chances are, she would be dangling off a meat hook next week.
You don't do this for you... you do it for them. But the great thing is, that these horses touch your heart like no other can. Instead of feeling like I am getting a broken, useless money pit, I feel like it's perpetually Christmas eve here, and her arrival will be Christmas morning. Getting Lou Lou *allows us to give*. It's an opportunity that we are grateful for.

EQTrainer- well said!!!!!!!!!!! I always say the secret to the rescues is they give you MORE than you give them! If more people did it they'd see this for themselves. Also, You just never know when you'll have a horse that'll defeat the odds. My last years suffolk money pit was Ninety Second KO. Some may remember him from this board with a similar thread last year. Here's the list of woes for the poor guy...easy to see why no one wanted him:
15.2h chestnut
narrow as a post (they took his beeding away because he was eating it)
whicked crooked leg and foot

Beautiful pictures Mapleshade!!!! I remember last year reading about him. He should be the poster child for rescue horses. We should publish a book on rescued horses and their pictures like they do dogs. Just get some really good photographs and a small blurb about where each one came from. I don't know, maybe it would be a way to raise money for more rescues....

Thank you, EqTrainer and Mapleshade, for summing up the "beautiful madness" of taking on a rescue horse so well. :) There's really nothing more rewarding...
I love that idea, Horsea. You have 2 coming from Suffolk that definitely deserve a mention. The stories are a little different...a game 9-year-old gelding who is now running on pure heart to stave off an injured body, and a sweet 2-year-old filly who never really had a chance. But both would be doomed if you hadn't stepped up and saved them, just like Lou Lou and Phoenix, and so many others.

2 swollen knees
cribbed like a fiend
huge open sores from a bad cribbing
collar
cryptorchid

Ok, I emailed Norcrest and she said she can get Bankers Red to me for an extremely reasonable price. I just need to know what I have to do next...??? She'll have to stay in the lean to, so hopefully she'll be ok with a blankie. What about a health cert/etc?? I guess someone named Kate has my number and may call?
Help?
I haven't called the trainer, I guess I'll do that now.

Congrats, Equus! You know she has the screws in the cannon bone, though, and is on and off lame? It's not clear whether she will ever be able to do more than light trail riding, though she is one of those correct, well-bred mares who could be a great sporthorse mom. I just want to make sure you're clear on her issues. She has a lovely disposition and is stunning-looking.
I will PT you Katie's #. Banker's Red's trainer is very hard to get on the phone, but if you can't get her, you can try Lloyd Lockhart (another trainer at the track and dad to Banker's trainer): 617-852-4166
Once you reach Lori or Mr. Lockhart, tell them they need to bring the horse's Jockey Club papers with her to the track. (My understanding is that they are supposed to be bringing Red to the track first thing tomorrow morning, from Lori's farm, where she is now.) The papers will be needed for the health cert.
Once you have the papers Katie can help you get the health cert.

She skinned her pastern coming out of her last race, FurryPony, and needs some bandaging and care to the leg while it heals. But it seems to be only superficial. I am told she is very cute, friendly, and has no other issues.
Her trainer can tell you more about her; Monica is a nice person who really wants to help this horse. Her # is 617-913-6872.

Ah well, that's fine. I guess maybe someday I might get a nice TB cross baby then. My parents are going to kill me, my stepmother wanted a sound trail riding and driving prospect, but maybe I'll just tell her it's a temporary addition. Yeah, right. I hope she's at least sweet. :sigh:
17handtb
Nov. 12, 2006, 11:24 AM
She is sweet, I can promise you that! :) And she could be just fine for light trails and driving, with some time...she was racing with the screws and that could have aggravated the leg, so it could just be a question of time. (definitely have your vet take a look at her, if you get her, to prescribe the best treatment. She should also be confined to a small turnout space while she heals.) She really is a beautiful young mare and she will throw some NICE foals.
I PT'd you with some suggestions on completing the transaction.
Ted/DressageGeek, how kind you are to offer peeps! I bet those would be very warmly received! :)

for instance to Virginia? I probably could find it in one of these threads but if anyone can tell me it would save me rereading and my phone line keeps going down with this rainstorm we are having...
Also question about how folks receiving these horses deal with quarantine? Do you or don't you? The only space I have to really keep a horse away from my others is a pasture with run-in. I am assuming if these guys are coming from the track that they would need to be slowly introduced to pasture (ours is still quite lush for November).

17HandTB-How is Xcape doing? Has someone adopted him?
17handtb
Nov. 12, 2006, 07:54 PM
CBV: it depends on the shipper and the number of horses on the load, but I know Lorraine Horse Transport is charging $650 per horse to go from Suffolk Downs to Ocala, FL - so you'd probably be looking at around $400ish to go to Virginia.
When bringing a horse home off the track, it's usually a safe rule of thumb to assume the horse needs full vaccinations and deworming, as well as a slow introduction to grass. We usually recommend starting out by hand-grazing the horse on grass for 15 minutes a day, then working up full turnout slowly from there.
AHorseSomeDay: Xcape was going pretty lame at his foster home, so we had new (digital) X-rays taken that showed his ankle fracture was not fully closed, poor guy. He is feeling better now, and the vet thinks he has a very good prognosis to be sound for flatwork after another 3 months' stall rest.

I took a risk and did not quarantine Manny when I brought him home. It just wouldn't have been practical for my situation. I know you can't always tell by looking, but at least I did have the luxury of visiting him and his former stablemates several times before buying him, and was fairly confident that he was healthy before bringing him home. However, I have a small "closed" herd and have made a conscious decision to not ship any of my horses out anywhere to ride for the next few weeks -- so if for some reason my vaccinated horses do get sick, at least I won't be spreading it to other farms.
Manny is on grass for no more than about an hour & a half a day right now. I did hand graze him for about 15 minutes his first couple days home. I don't think he was even able to hand graze while he was at Suffolk.

If anyone in MA was thinking of getting one of these horses, the place I'm bringing my guy has 3 more stalls. It's about 15 miles north of Boston, Middleton, easy to get to off 95... cover-all, pasture, trails. It is VERY reasonably priced and *bonus* I'll be there rehabbing my guy. Which means I'll be there to help (if you need/want it) at 7 am and then again at 6 pm. Just PM me if you're interested. I know that Lorita (the woman who's taking care of my guy) has been grabbing rescues for 2 days!

She is at the track and said trainer Jack Halloran - who has Banker's Heiress (http://www.canterusa.org/newengland/sale/images-salehorses/BankersHeiress.jpg), Cole's a Champ (http://www.canterusa.org/newengland/sale/images-salehorses/ColesaChamp.jpg), Steel Butterfly (http://www.canterusa.org/newengland/sale/images-salehorses/IronButterfly.jpg), Commander Zack (http://www.canterusa.org/newengland/sale/images-salehorses/CommanderZack.jpg), and the handsome and well-bred stallion Illusionary Magic (http://www.canterusa.org/newengland/sale/images-salehorses/IllusionaryMagic.jpg)listed - told her he CANNOT take his horses with him when he leaves Suffolk, and is frantic. Any and all offers are welcome.
Jack's cell phone doesn't seem to be working, so anyone interested can call the Suffolk Downs main number - 617-567-3900 - ask for the stable gate, and ask to have trainer Jack Halloran paged (or leave a message with your number).

Call Jim from Lorraine Horse Transport - 781-858-8572 - and see if Lorraine has any loads leaving Suffolk for Ocala in the next week. You might be able to hop on if so.
Health cert/shots are the tricky part. There are 2 vets left at the track but both are planning to leave very soon. (only one will do pre-purchases, so you'll have to set one up very fast if you come to an agreement on either or both horses).
I don't mean to pressure you, but if you're seriously interested and can work something out with the trainer, you'll want to get the health cert and vaccinations done immediately. PT me if you finalize things and I can get you the phone #s of both vets.
All horses at the track are supposed to have current Coggins. That said...be sure to confirm w/the trainer that the Coggins are in order.
PT if you have any questions!
