Ok I was caught watching Miami Ink the other day and thought if I ever got a tattoo I would want a horse maybe jumping or dressage not sure.

I was just curious since I have never seen anyone with a horse tattoo (not like I have been looking) lol cause I am sure some are in places I'd rather leave in the dark. :)

If you have one what is it and where or post a pic

Oh and how much did it "really" hurt I dont wanna hear it didn't hurt at all LOL

I never ended up getting one, but in the past I used to want the little mustang from the Mustang car. I thought it would be cute in a light brown...just a small tattoo...on my upper arm.

msrobin, great question!! I have watched Miami Ink as well and have thought of the same question--wonder if they do horse tattoos, and what they would look like. I've seen them do some of dogs, and boy it looks like a photograph on the person's arm when they are done. its amazing!

my friend wants to get a snaffle bit. sort of plain, if I was going to get a tattoo I would want to get some elaborate--something no one else has....I mean something like my horse's portrait...not huge or anything, but something unique and "difficult"....

......but I'm too chicken.

Yea I want one but I am chicken. I did get my belly button pierced and it hurt like God came down and stabbed me with a hot poker ! LOL
Which killed me getting my tongue pierced since everyone told me the belly button would feel like going to get a shot at the doctors office.
Well I have never gotten a shot like that and never will :)

So the tongue I would have to have novacaine or be knocked out cold LOL

AND I have a friend who had it done. She had a treble clef, with a horse's head put in it. (picture the treble clef, with the top part of the curve being the horse's head). These are two 'loves of her life'...music and horses. It looks really cool. She has it on her ankle, with the horse's head facing forward. She said her hubby was the other love of her life, but tattooing his name or likeness was, ummm...too permanent. LOL. I don't have a picture of it, sorry.

Another friend of mine had a black cowboy hat w/a purple butterfly done on her left shoulder. (As a memorial to her late hubby). The local guy did it. I was there to watch it, and saw her flinching and wincing alot. She said the worst is the shading...the best was it was on her back so she didn't see what he was doing. She has a butterfly and roses on her ankle, and said that didn't hurt too bad, but she couldn't stand to watch it! Don't have pictures of those either.

I want to have one of my 3 horses...just the heads, necks on down to chests, just haven't figured out how yet. AND the tattoo guy we have here in town, while he does a good job, doesn't do a 'realistic' job, I don't want mine looking cartoonish. Will probably go elsewhere when (IF) the time comes.

I have a tattoo at the top of my left arm, designed by my daughter. It's two horses' heads either side of three whorls -- I'll send pics privately if anyone's interested.

I have always wanted a tattoo, but heeded the advice that said I'd hate it by the time I was 50. When I turned 50 and still wanted one, I went for it. It didn't hurt. I'm very pleased with it. I grin every time I catch sight of it in the mirror. And I've turned the design into one of my letterheads, and had it embroidered on several shirts.

Things to remember if you're getting a tattoo:

--The more detail you want, the larger the tattoo needs to be.
--Choose a GOOD ARTIST. If you don't know what a blown out line or uneven color looks like, and why it matters, LEARN. This is an *excellent* list of truly excellent artists: http://www.compunction.org/tattoos.html
--If you want the color and the linework in your tattoo to stay sharp, be SURE to either put it somewhere that diesn't see sun, or be religious about putting a high SPF sunscreen on it.
--Of course, make sure that you LOVE the design. I think it's a great idea to wait a long time between finding what you love and getting on your body. I waited several years for all of my work.

Where you get the tattoo will make a big difference on how much it hurts. Getting tattooed on fat or muscle is really not painful. Over bone can be anywhere from irritating to painful.

I've wanted a tattoo since I was a toddler (I'm 37 now), and have researched and researched, but can't quite decide on what to have done. I really want to have a piece in memory of my "heart" dog, but he was solid black, and while I'd like something of a photographic likeness, I think even the amazing Kat von D on Miami ink might have trouble capturing his spirit. So I've been foozling with different, more stylized designs that are still recognizable as him, and separate, horse-related ones, too.

I think this is made even more difficult because I do a lot of photo work and was a graphic designer myself (am rather obsessive with stuff).

But being obsessive with something that you'll have on your body for the rest of your life is probably not a bad thing. ;)

There is some really good advice for those looking to get a tattoo here (http://www.offthemaptattoo.com/get-the-perfect-tattoo.html).

I'd love to see more pics of what COTHers have had done.

If you want any of the crew at Miami Ink you have to go to the show's website & apply to be considered for it. They are very good at what they do; my faves are Kat Von D, Chris Garver and Ami James.

My tats really & truly didn't hurt, at all. Neither did my eyebrow or belly button piercings. Just didn't for what ever reason.

Really want to stress to anyone considering getting their 1st tat to make sure the shop is clean, well lit, that they use sterile equipment, don't just do stock flash but have an artist(s) that will draw custom for you. You (hopefully) don't want the same body art that 100's of other people are sporting.

I've got my next tat drawn and ready to be inked & an idea for one that I can't get right so am having custom done. If I had the money for the trip down, the stay and the tat I'd for sure be applying to go to Miami Ink for a memorial tattoo by Kat of the little one I lost, she is awesome at portraits!

Simkle did you get them out of a catalog?? I have seen that red horse design before somewhere!

My horse tattoo is a modified old Kentucky Oaks logo. I loved that it was related to racing and related to fillies! I'll try to post a picture later, but it's a simple tattoo - sort of a abstract outline.

Small tangent... I put a copy of that tattoo on EVERYTHING I could at my wedding. Since it's simple and a little abstract, not everyone knew it was a racehorse, but my friends knew. It was on the invitations, the cake, the table cards... Anything I could print on. The cake was beautiful with red roses on top in honor of the Derby. The outline was done with white icing on white icing. I LOVED it.

I have a little horse shoe outline that is shaded in blue. It is on my hip bone, but didn't hurt getting it done (I have about medium pain threshhold).

My skin didn't take the tattoo all that great and it is kind of scarred from the tattoo-- raised, especially along the outline (I can feel the whole deisgn) and over time it has faded more than is normal (especially for a spot that gets no sunlight what so ever). Nothing the artist did, as he is wonderful and has worked on several friends who did not have the same issues. I have really sensitive skin, and I just think its how my body reacted to the ink. As a result, I don't think I would chance getting another one.

Don't get one until you are absolute sure of what you are getting and where you are going to get it. I knew where I was going to get one for a long time, but I kept changing my mind about what every few months, so I waited until I was really sure.

Breakthru, thank you!! It's my most recent piece--I got it this spring. The inspiration for it was actually a COTH cover from about 10 years ago :)

Citydog, take a look at that link to the list of artists I posted. You might like Dawei Zhang for animal portrait work: http://www.daweitattoo.com/animal.html

Sannois, my red horse is Cal Peacock's Blood Horse. Her stuff sells though Chamisa Ridge.

ImJumpin, it *really* sounds like the tattooist worked your skin too deep.

Here's an article on tattoo scarring: http://wiki.bmezine.com/index.php/Tattoo_Scarring

Here's an article about ink allergy: http://wiki.bmezine.com/index.php/Ink_Allergy (Warning--kind of gross pictures, and don't wander around on this site unless you want to see some serious body modification)

K... First on is a pic of the one on my lower back - it's a custom one I did myself...
Second is the shoulder one also I custom - the kanji is for "family" and "dream" so with the horse and the maple leaf (GO CANADA) it's got all the things I love the most in it! :) ... had to enlist help for that one, apparently it's impossible to take a photo of your shoulder by yourself. Who knew? :)

Nope, I have looked into it, and its not like the scarring that can occur from working too deep or overworking. It is hard to explain and I don't have pictures of it, but I think it really has to do with my sensitive skin ;). Its not super unsightly, infact I am probably the only that notices. I have yearly "mole" checks, and my dermatologist (who does lots of lazer removal stuff) agrees that it looks like just a funky thing that my skin did.

I thought of some other horse-related tattoos that I have seen. One semi like the mustang logo, the outline of a horse head, and the little jumping outline horse logo used by Hunter and Sporthorse magazine. The outline ones were pretty neat.

Never thought I'd see a BME link on CotH!

Thanks for the portrait link, Simkie.

Your line horse tattoo is so perfectly placed--great example of body as canvas. I mean, in and of itself it's a lovely design anyway, but it just works so particularly well there as opposed an ankle or something.

*raises hand*
I have a unicorn head on my right thigh in blues and purples with the words Misty Blue over it in script. Got it with a fake ID when I was 16...21 years later it still looks new but 21 years from now it'll look more like Ye Olde Gray Mare. It didn't hurt as much as burn/tingle. Kind of like scratching a sunburn. *Very* few people know I have a tattoo, and most are surprised if they find out I have one. Although few find out since it's in a spot that's onyl seen if I wear short shorts or a bathing suit. And since my skin is basically glow in the dark glaring snow white...it's a rare day indeed that I show that much skin. Dangerous to onlookers with the glare ya know.
The tattoo person did tell me he doesn't "do names" as tattoos because he hates trying to tattoo over them later...but he consented when I told him Misty Blue was my horse. So my screen name is on my leg...if I ever got wiped out at a show and they had to cut my britches away...any other COTHers there could all point and say, "Hey! It's MistyBlue! Figures she'd fall off and knock herself out...head injuries explain her posting style!" :D

I spent a loooooooong time thinking about it, waiting, thinking... I'm exceedingly glad that I waited long enough to find a truly excellent linework artist--the close linework would've looked like crap otherwise. :) (Scott at http://www.alteredstate.net/ did the line horse)

I love mine. It is of my favorite horse ever who died almost 3 years ago. I just took in my favorite picture of his head and had a tattoo artist sketch it out. I was very impressed and feel it turned out great, especially considering it is on my left foot, and I was less than still during the tattooing process. This photo is from the day after, it is a much softer black now and I had him fix the mane/forelock more to my liking a few months ago. Please ignore my Spongebob PJ pants and less than fresh pedicure. :)

http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g182/cmixon1984/ziggy010.jpg

(Edited to say: I chose my foot as the location for this tattoo because it is one that the horse I was memorializing stepped on and fractured in 3 places at one point. I understood that the foot is a difficult area to work on and can often end up looking distorted, therefore I sought an artist that was exceptionally experienced in tattooing feet. I also want to mention that I spent a YEAR interviewing tatto artists and inspecting tattoo parlors in a 150 mile radius around my town. It was serious business!)

I'm fairly covered in tattoos on my upper body (still a long way to go though, lol) so I don't like to comment much on the pain factor. My experience is that it all just depends: Your state of mind, your general health, the body part being tattooed, and your general pain tolerance all play a major part.

Quick example, I have a celtic tree of life that covers a significant part of my back and goes all the way from one side to the other. It took multiple sessions to complete and each time the amount of pain differed. One session where I only had the left side worked on did not hurt AT ALL (I actually asked my artist if he was tattooing me or not), then another session with all over work was beating the heck out of me.

My one horse tattoo right now is a celtic pegasus on my left upper arm, the pic I have is a bit blurry but you can get the general idea.

http://www.metalmom.com/tattoo/pegasus%20tat.JPG

I'll eventually be finishing off my back piece with a horse tattoo on my lower back and flowers representing both of my parent's birth months (my entire back is family themed).

I actually have the WEG logo tattooed on my lower calf just above my ankle. It's about 3 inches x 3 inches. I don't have any pictures of it right now as I just got it not too long ago. Unfortunately I do have to get the purple touched up a little because the artist went a little light at first. But I love it aside from that part. My tattoo artist was great and is actually my co-barn owners BF. I'm already wanting another tattoo. I love the portrait idea!

Is that what that is called? Blowouts? I just thought it was my lousy sun-damaged skin ;) I'm in Canada - Toronto - though I haven't looked at the list.

I DO know the place I went to offered free "touchups". Is this "blowout" the fault of the artist, or just my bad luck?

I also wouldn't mind the horse's head to be a little less "araby" (no offense to those arab owners out there!) and I'm not sure they can fix that....

Goody - I got my first tat done in TO - at WayCool Tattoo... One on Younge street. They did a great job (It's Vixey from the fox and the hound ... lots of colour) and it looks as good now - 9 years later - as it did that day. :)

Simkie
Nov. 4, 2006, 10:33 PM
Ayup, the places where the linework goes fuzzy is an excellent example of a blowout. I would not go back to the same artist for touchups--blowouts are certainly the fault of the artist. If the skin is worked too deep, the capillaries try to carry the ink away...that's why it gets all fuzzy.

I'm not sure about the head--maybe the profile line could be thickened?

There are a few tattoo artists in Canada on the list, but I don't see any in Toronto. If you're looking for someone local, take some time looking through the portfolio. Pay very close attention to the linework. You want to see LOTS of sharp, clean lines and NO blown lines.

In general, I've talked to a lot of people who think that they don't need to see a good artist because "it's just blackwork." This is a good time to remind all those reading who'd like to get some ink that black work is HARD to do correctly. It's all too easy to blow out a line, or not be able to put down a nice, even line. Blackwork has to be very, very precise to look really good. Really examine those portfolios, everyone!! Look for CLEAN linework and EVEN shading. :)

Aha. Yes, my Anatomy and Physiology classes tell me that what you are saying makes sense. So what he did is go to deep. Rats. Ah, anatomy and physiology, eh? The tattoo artists should put the ink in the basement membrane of the skin--deeper than that, and you wind up with blowouts; shallower, and you wind up with a fading, blotchy tattoo.

Can they "fix" that without my horses rear looking something like a Quarter Horse :)? Excellent question for your new artist! ;) I'd *think* that going in and sharpening the butt and tail line would help make the fuzzy stuff less apparent. But! I've not actually SEEN your tattoo in real life, and I still consider myself a neophyte when it comes to all this tattoo stuff. So, I'll defer to an expert. Go find one and see what they say

The horses head ....yeah maybe thicken the profile. It wasn't like that on the pic I gave him, but that's how "dishy" it ended up on ME. Did the artist go at it freehand?

I have one, it's 3 horses jumping around my wrist...I like it, I drew it, but would have liked more detail...which would have been next to impossible since it is tiny!! I think the artist did a good job with what I gave her though.

The last one is my least favorite, and the pics were from shortly after it was done, when it was still "shedding" or whatever it is. It looked pretty bad, but now they're smooth and consistent colored. Anyhow, I'm already planning another, but will have to wait for a while...

The vet tech has a cute cartoon horse on her wrist, I like that one.

One summer I had one of those 'temporary tattoo' booths. If I had a nickel for every person that came up and said they wish they'd gotten a temporary tattoo instead of a real one, I could have retired. That kind of spooked me from ever getting one. I'm a chicken.

I have a horse RELATED tat. It is on my lower back so that it can be hidden when necessary. I LOVE my tat, but there are times and places for tats and I did not want to be in a... wedding, for example, and have the tat hanging out on my shoulder while wearing a strapless gown. If anyone wants to know what it is, they can PT me, I will not post on this forum what it is. I can say that, while getting it done, there were moments of discomfort, but it was not anything that was unbearable. While healing, it felt like sunburn, but again, nothing unbearable. Of course, mine is solid purple, which, I found out later, is one of the harder colors to work with.

I am having a 3/4 sleeve started on my left arm next spring (it takes almost a year to get in with my artist of choice http://www.dandittmer.com/index.asp ) It's going to be a fantasy forest scene with insects, flowers, a waterfall, and of course a unicorn.

Sabovee - I got this done at New Tribe, on Queen West...across from Muchmusic. I have several friends who got theirs done there and had no problems. Sheesh.

New Tribe is pretty much hit and miss for both tattoos and piecing. There are some really great artists around the city though. I had work done by Leah Miller, who used to be at Urban Primitive. She took time off for a maternity leave and is working again, but doesn't have a web presence right now. If you're interested, PT me and I'll give you her contact info. Does does beautiful, clean work and would be happy to show you her portfolio, I'm sure. I'll also email you pics of what she did for me, if you'd like.

I've also seen some really nice work lately done by Rob at Bobby Five. More and more people seem to be discovering that though, and I think he books several months in advance. Worth the wait if you like his work though.

Lovely tattoos

I'm planning on getting one in several years time of a celtic horse tribal - probably on my left shoulder maybe with wings on etiher side of it to honor my Grandfather who started us with ponies and has bred them for 45 years. He's not doing well and I'm not sure how much time we have left with him  some days it's good and others they aren't so good. I have my fingers crossed he stays doing well - I'm not ready to lose him yet. :(

I have the idea for it forming - celtic-y tribal style (Irish - horses - we breed Irish horses) and have it on my shoulder - kinda of having Grandpa always looking over my shoulder and watching over for me :)

I've been toying with the idea of getting a horse-related tattoo for years and years - I almost did it this August, for both my 25th birthday and the 10 year anniversary of my first horse's death, but then got caught up with moving and getting settled at school that it didn't happen. I want to get an appy (one of the images from my mare's papers) on my shoulder, but am worried about how much time it'll take to heal since I carry my courier bag on that side.

Any ideas? Is this a winter-break type of healing time, or a summer-break type of healing time?

I want one. I'm not sure yet what or where though. I hate to do the lower back because it seems like everyone has a tat there...but seeing that I am most likely going to get pregnant at some point, I don't want an ugly stretched out one either.

I saw one 10 years ago that was snaffle bits linked together around a girl's upper arm, and have considered getting that around my upper calf. I mean, what are the chances of THAT stretching? And I may still do the back tat somehow, just haven't found a design I like. Two Sticks, I really love yours!!

So it looks like I will need to have mine drawn from a photo my most precious horse that has crossed the bridge. The photo is a showjumping pic from a large show 20 years ago.

He was bay but the jump is very bright with reds, whites and yellows.
I am going to try for Miami ink lol who knows they may call.

Generally speaking it's two weeks for a tattoo to fully heal. My experience is that it's really only a couple of days where you'd want to avoid pressure on the area though.

I'm a waitress and my latest tattoo takes up the entire inside of my arm, right where the plates rest. It never really caused me any issues going into work the day after a session. A little sore but no biggie, and I swell like crazy. Oh, I was in college when I had my back done though and I think it was two days before it was totally comfy to carry my bookbag.

Either way I'd say two or three days and you'll be fine.

Downloaded the original design from tattoojohnny.com and my marketing guy modified it to my liking.

I took the modified sketch to a tattoo shop in Vegas in July, and here is the result ... (only a week after, so it is less "bold" now). It hardly hurt.

I have three tattoos (as of last week...just got a new one on Thursday). My horse-related one is four horse shoes going up the right side of my spine. They're sketched off of one of my large pony's shoes and each one is colored to represent one of my former critters. I don't have a picture of them because I'm just not that flexible.

As far as pain goes, it really depends on where you put it. My first one was on my hip and that didn't hurt all that much . My back hurt a bit more during the process and hurt for a good long while afterwards (flying home a few days after getting it done and being wedged against an airline seat sucked). My new one, which is on my foot, right below my inside ankle bone hurt the most to have done but I have had absolutely zero pain related to it except for the first hour or two after it was finished. Now it itches like hell, but mine all tend to itch like crazy during the healing process.

People are always shocked when they find out I have ink. Got the idea from an art deco backsplash tile.

Mine is near my heart. No one can see it unless I show it to them.

Got mine in CA while visiting friends. Was going to have it done by the shop owner who'd done my friend's (now ex) hubby's ink. When he found out what I wanted done he insisted I have his guest artist from San Fran do it.

This is a horrible pic, the lines look fuzzy, but 6 years later they are still sharp and look great.

Edited to add: Mine didn't really hurt. I was scared it would. The artist did the first line and then watched for my reaction. I rolled my eyes and muttered something about paper cuts hurting way worse. That being said, by the time he was done, I'd really, really had enough. I don't think I'd want to sit through hours and hours getting a large piece with a lot of color.

I have three tattoos, but only one is horse-related. The pictures aren't so great, but it's hard to take a picture of the side of your hip in the mirror.

my best self-shot:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v23/Orliselfprin/stuff/IMG_0089.jpg

And I guess that I have a high pain tolerance because none of my tattoos hurt [one on the front of my hip, one of my ribs, and this one on the side of my hip], and neither did any of my piercings [two in each ear, nose stud, navel, and septum].

I have horses around my wrist...I can cover it with a watch if I have to. I found this one in the Philippines...I was amazed they could do it so small. I have had it touched up quite a few times, though because it is on my wrist. Didn't hurt at all.

I also have a jumper on my calf...it's just a trace over of one of those "etched glass" stickers you can put on your car. I found it on the internet and just printed it, enlarged it, and traced. Not too painful there either.

I have nine other tattoos, but no more are horsey!

I have 2 tattoos, both done by different artists but both at New Tribe...thankfully no blowouts! I'd love more reccomendations for good artists in the Toronto area, since within the next year-year and a half I plan on getting another one (or 2...you know how that goes!).

I have a star on my rib cage and my horsey tattoo on my back. IIRC someone on the first page of this post wanted something similar:

two sticks - really like the new outline in the middle - that's really cool! I've been looking for a design I really like for a while now...go back and forth between having my first pony's head shot (she's a CUTE Haflinger mare), or something celtic merpony-like. We'll see, as I hope to decide and get it done in the near future. You guys all have some cool horsey ones though!

Nice addition! The blue/green ribbons will contrast nicely with the new color in the middle.

I've pretty much decided to get one for myself this holiday season. I've a couple drawings I like, need to decide on that but my main problem has been deciding on a place for it.

I've been really hesitant about getting a horsy tat due to the lack of talented artists when it comes to drawing horses - I'm very fussy!

Anyways, I've decided on a seahorse with a ying & yang symbol in its belly with 'ferns' as its mane.

A seahorse as it is horsy and because of my love for water (ie swimming), ying & yang for balance and 'ferns' for NZ :)

Just have to get the courage to get it done now!!

Most of my back is covered at this point, though none of my tattoos are horse related, so I won't post pics. As far as pain- there are places on the body that have more nerve endings than others. For example, a tattoo over your ribcage is going to hurt a lot more than one over a fleshy area such as a calf or thigh. I liken the pain to a really agressive cat scratch. Don't ever (EVER) believe the people that say it doesn't hurt. There are several small needles penetrating your skin, forcing ink beneath its surface. It IS painful. Fortunately, most peope find that it hurts a lot less than they expect. And after the first 10-15 minutes, your endorphins kick in and make the experience a bit more bearable. If you are serious about getting a tattoo and feel good about what you're getting done, then go for it! If you're worried about what it's going to look like in 20 years, talk to you artist about how easily your piece can be touched up. Touch-ups can make a very old tattoo look brand new. Additionally, think about where you're having it put on your body. Areas like the hip, upper thigh, sides of the lower back often look worse with age due to weight gain and aging skin that tends to loosen up over time. The area between the shoulders typically remains relatively taught and (aside from really excessive weight gain) the same size throughout adulthood, contributing to the lifespan of your tattoo.

Basically, the biggest thing to remember is that you're getting a tattoo for YOU and no one else. So many people offer their unwanted opinions of the tattoos that I have (which only show when scantily clad, ie in a bathing suit) and I have to take that with a grain of salt. Additionally, when done on a suitable part of the body, by a talented artist, the tattoo won't look bad in 20 years. It's all about responsible action on the part of the tattoo-er and tattoo-ee. Do your homework, and you will be satisfied with the finished product!

I have 2 horse related tattoo's that I love...and want more! Haha, I wish somebody had told me tattoos were addicting because once you get one, you instantly want another.

Anywho, I got a unicorn done on my back hip after I graduated High School. A couple years later, me and my college roomate got matching horseshoes...except mine had color added, was on my ankle, and I had flowers on the side. Hers was just the basic outline of the horseshoe on her back...kinda cool since they look different, yet basically are the same outline. To this day, we are still great friends even tho we live so far away, and that tattoo always reminds me of all the fun we had at college.

Sorry for pic quality....it's hard taking pics of something on your back and your ankle, lol.

I need to get a pic of mine. It is of the pict horses in celtic knotwork. I put in on my lower back and it is about 10 inches across. The outline is done but I need to go back for the shading part of it. The guy who did it in frederick md did an awesome job and put up with me having no pain threshold. It was painful but worth it and symbolized to me my love of horses and strength. My current fiance loves it and was there for me the entire time even though he thought I was being a wimp!

I have a zuni horse on the inside of my right forearm. I'll take a photo and post it later. Not my favorite tat, and I want to get it redone. Not covered, but worked on. There were some artist issues and a lot of aftercare issues - I take much responsibility for how it looks. My friend has had two tattoos done at True Tattoo in Hollywood (which curiously isn't on the list someone else posted - it is Chris Garver's shop, which Kat Von D also works at). I have met Garver and I LOVE his work. Got to watch him touch up a design and start it on a guy one night. Kat is also awesome... I'll see if I can't find the link to the website.

My third tat is going to be a celtic horse that will go in the middle of my back, I'm planning on getting it for valentines day. I love the idea of it, but not the current incarnation... I want to find an artist that can fix it for me. Basically I want to show them what I have and have them come up with an idea for changing it to something I love.

It does symbolize my beloved April - the ultimate chestnut mare (in every good and bad sense of the phrase!!)

edited to add: It was originally supposed to be just the outline - none of the detail in the center. NEVER change your mind mid-tattoo!! :D

Thanks y'all for inspiring me to stop THINKING about my horsey tat and actually GET one! Mine is in the middle of my back, it says "dakota" in elvish (my son's name) with jumping horses on either side. My artist custom drew the design for me; I actually love that each horse looks a teeny bit different; they symbolize myself and my husband, always looking over our son and jumping towards a common goal. I got it in elvish so that his name wouldn't be obvious to just anyone; they actually have to ask about it! Here's the pic! I just got it today, btw. Thanks to Simkie (I think it was) that posted the list of great tattoo artists.

I have 4 tats so far, but none are horsey yet. I have to make sure they can be covered, so I know what I want my design to be, but am trying to figure out where to put it. I have 1 hip, 1 ankle, 1 shoulder blade, and 1 up my spine. I am thinking of somehow incorporating it into my back design because I think both ankles, hips, or shoulders would look funny and your back doesn't change as much when you age. I want the county saddle horse jumping, just without the rider and thicker lines. http://www.countysaddlery.com/html/saddles/stabilizerxtr.html

TheJenners, I really like your tattoo also. I really struggled with wanting one like I got vs wanting one like yours or like the one Cabo Pony wants. In the end, I went with the darker, more dramatic one because it matches the font better. Hmm, now I'm thinking maybe I'll get a simple, flowy horse one on my upper back at some point. I'm sure it will be fairly quick and pretty painless.

Cabo Pony, I love that County Saddlery horse; I don't think I've ever really noticed it before. That would look beautiful as a tat.

OK, so I had to resurrect this thread, because I got my first tattoo last night and I just have to share it with some horse people!! My pictures aren't great - it's still looking a little pink and all, but I'm very happy with it!

It's on my left ankle, and I love the design. It did hurt to get it done, but I more or less expected that from all I had read. I was just very pleased with myself because I managed to sit through 2.5+ hours of tattooing without crying, fainting or otherwise panicking.
Just kept thinking - it's way less scary then many of the things I have done while riding!

I have mine in the center of my back (no link yet - sorry) but I have to ask - how do you get a tattoo on your leg and keep riding? I ride everyday and can't quite figure out a time I could get one done on my calf which is what I would really like to have.

Glad this thread popped back up because I have a question: can one get a tattoo in WHITE? I would like a pinto horse (to be exact, MY pinto horse!) but don't know what to do about the white parts. I have a medium Caucasian skin tone but I'm wearing a white sweatshirt right now and there's definitely plenty of contrast with my skin! Just don't think I've ever seen white ink...

Yes, if your skin is light enough. If you have darker skin, the ink will be partially colored by your skin tone. White tattoos are subtle and just LOVELY when done right. Let me see if I can come up with some examples for you...

Usual disclaimer applies about these links, folks. DO NOT go wandering around on this site unless you are prepared for some weird assed, not work safe stuff.

These links are fine and are work safe.

Here's some white work: http://modblog.bmezine.com/2007/09/13/white-ink-palm-tattoo/

This last link shows you some very nice healed white work.

I have a couple more examples--one is just STUNNING--that are not work safe, so I will not post the links. If you'd like to see, please PM me.

Perhaps even more than with a color tattoo, you NEED to go to someone who is really GOOD at tattooing. The more experience with white ink, the better, as it's harder and different to work with then other ink.

According to the tattoo artist, I would be fine for a short ride (30-45 min) a day after the tattoo and fine for a longer ride within a few days. I got a nasty cold the day after the tattoo (from my husband, grrr!), so I haven't ridden for a couple of days. The tattoo isn't very sensitive today, and it's only been a couple days, so I imagine riding would be no problem now. The artist also suggested that it could be protected with some extra A&D ointment and a thick sock for the day or two that it was a little tender, if it bothered me to ride.

YAY tattoos! My first i did on my right shoulder blade. It is 2 mere lines that make a horse's face and ear into neck. I designed it 4 years before i had it done. i am an artist and i sign my paintings with the same symbol. For me it was really a spiritual experience to have it placed on my body. i adore it.
My second is in the middle of my lower back and is a tribal NA style otter swimming in a circle. The otter is a symbol of femininity and of giving, childhood fun and of love.
I have never had a day i regret either one. In both applications i had my best friend come with me and made it ceremonial. Marking yourself is a BIg deal, its permanent, and it defines who you are.
Pain wise it really is not that bad. My shoulder felt like someone scraping me with a safety pin, and my lower back the same. but when he 'hit a nerve' my leg would twitch and we all laughed. honestly if it's what you really want your mind will rule over matter.

Warning, tats are addictive. I want several more, but the time and the design havent happened yet. I want one on the back of my neck and i want a full back done, and i want a matching horse on my left shoulder. in due time i am sure.
I think they are beautiful. and for me the are healing. I have spina bifida, and hellacious menstrual cramps, both of which my otter has helped. As a part of me it also reminds me to be positive energy without selfishness, and to love life. Otter is a powerful woman animal.

My greatest suggestion is to design it yourself and sit on it for as long as it takes for you to know balls to bones that is NEEDS to be a part of you. then you will know it is right.

I only have one horse tattoo, but many other tattoos... one that covers half my back, a chest piece, etc. I tend to forget at least one when I try to list them so I won't try :)

White tats are the bomb! I'd loff to get one eventually, and in the PNW I have some excellent artists in the area to go to for it as well. But not my next one, that one's been picked already and while the final colour is up in the air, it isn't white.

Simkie: is it that gorgeous tribal piece on the Russian chickie? OHGiH that work is breathtaking. Helps that the woman is also stunningly beautiful with an equally stunning body.

YES  The tattoo is just jaw-dropping (and so is the girl! Why can't I look like that?)

I was also looking for the white work crop circle hand tattoos--do you remember those? (Do you read modblog? I guess I'm assuming you do if you know about the russian chick.) I can't find them now, but I know they were on modblog this year sometime.

I love white work and need to find the right piece for it. I've been reluctant to get visible work, but I think white is just perfect for it.

Yup, I'm like you; both want and don't want visible work for all the various reasons. Right now I just decorate my torso ;). Though I'm going to a guy in Anacortes for a new piece in the next couple of weeks, and I'm going to ask if he does white ink. If so, I found a lovely line art design of two horses twined around each other that would look great in white.

Yeah, I think that's where I found the pictures of her...But I can't find it anymore, was actually looking the other week to show another buddy of mine into skin art. Could you PM me the link? TIA :).

Done! :)

I really want some white work on my hands or palms, but have been slow to come up with the design. I'm sure I'll think of something eventually. I love that palm work I posted earlier.

Hey Jenners, could you give me the name of the person in Anacortes who is skilled with white ink? Long have I been considering a tattoo and I know I want one done in white ink. Still deciding on placement though.

Thanks for all the great info and links, Simkie!

Hey, my apologies; I never saw this update on the thread. I'm not certain he actually does white ink, but he's extremely skilled and I bet he would. His name is Mike, his Web site is: www.bandanasarts.com (http://www.bandanasarts.com)

There is another man who is nationally known, no joke, in Sedro Woolley called Tiny Tim. I can almost guarantee he'd do work with white ink; he's been featured in national rags for a while and I've seen his work. Fantastic stuff. His Web site is: www.tinytimstattoos.com/ (http://www.tinytimstattoos.com/)

Mike is about 25 minutes from me, Tim is about an hour.

Simikie, if you came up here for ink work, you have a place to stay!

I'm 17 (almost 18) and I've known I would eventually want a tattoo for about 3 years now. My mom thinks it's silly. It took me a long time to come up with what I wanted, and it might sound silly now, but I want a little horseshoe. Horses are so important in my life, and they made me a large part of what I am today. So I want to get a little white horseshoe tattoo -- subtle and classy, but enough to say 'this is what I love and this is who I am'. I'm still debating between my shoulder, hip, ankle, or somehow putting it in the general area of my heart. I'll probably come home from college in the next year or two with it, once I'm positive of where I want it.

I hadn't seen white work before I looked at this thread, and it's stunning. I knew that was what I wanted right away.
