Not to worry, it's a great story!!!
Welcome to the TEAM!!!!!!!!!!!
Hehe, thanks, but I've been here the whole time. I just post rather infrequently since I don't want to lose my job. (I've even had to change my SN since the Big Man has come along...)
Keep up the good work!

Tuesday morning:
Update 504: Another comfortable night for Barbaro last night (monday night). Got the news coming back from my third set as I saw Michael Matz who had just heard from Dr. Richardson. Another beautiful morning here in Fair Hill.
updated tuesday 7:10am
Update 503: I am afraid Alcor did not recover from surgery: Polar bear operated on by Barbaro doctor dies (http://msnbc.msn.com/id/14458916/). Discussed here (http://forums.delphiforums.com/timwoolley/messages?msg=453.1).
This weeks racing focus will switch to the Travers (http://nyra.com/saratoga/), which will be part of a two hour broadcast on ESPN, from 5 - 7 pm on saturday. The Travers is restricted to three year olds (like the triple crown), and unlike the Pacific Classic which was for older horses. The favorite will likely be Bernadini, the easy winner of the Jim Dandy. he is trained by Tom Albatrani who provided us a nice interview on Barbaro (http://www.timwoolleyracing.com/news/2006/07/barbaro_updates_23.php#update348). Bluegrass Cat (comfortable winner of the Haskell) will probably be second choice. I will try to get more insight into this race over the next few days.

Update 507: New Bolton's latest Barbaro update: Barbaro remains a happy, comfortable horse (http://www.vet.upenn.edu/newsandevents/news/Barbaro_Update8-22.htm):
Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro remains comfortable according to veterinarians at Penn's George D. Widener Hospital . "Barbaro is doing well on both hind limbs," said Dr. Dean Richardson, Chief of Surgery. "Because of this, we do not plan to change his right hind cast in the next two weeks."
The colt's left hind foot has laminitis, but Barbaro seems comfortable with that foot as well. "He needs to continue to improve over the next few months before we will have a better idea about his long term comfort." said Dr. Richardson. "Barbaro's appetite and his attitude right now are phenomenal; he attacks his feed and when he goes out to graze, he acts like he thinks he could train."
Doctors remain cautious about Barbaro's prognosis because, according to Dr. Richardson, there is no assurance that he will surmount all of his medical problems. "Right now, he is a surprisingly happy horse," he said. "He is gaining weight and has had his pain medications reduced without any effect on his well being. His strength and overall appearance have been improving since he became well enough to be walked outside each day."
Barbaro remains in the Intensive Care Unit of the University of Pennsylvania's George D. Widener Hospital, where he is recovering from injuries suffered at the Preakness on May 20.
The next update will be posted on Tuesday, August 29 unless there is a significant change in Barbaro's condition.
Also, the Cartoon Caption Contest (http://forums.delphiforums.com/timwoolley/messages?msg=212.1) ends tomorrow at 2 pm eastern. Some great entries so far.

Thank you Tim/Alex:
Update 508: A quick update from Kennett Florist:
I just returned from NBC. Bobby is doing well. But mood is a little subdued. Has you might expect after the sad new of Alcor. As always NBC loves the treats. Bobby got a nice basket of baby carrots with green tops, His favorite.
We would like to thank team Barbaro for all the support to Bobby, NBC, and us. You all are truly amazing people. We love you.
We Believe!
God Bless Barbaro & all of you.
Here is a photo album (http://www1.snapfish.com/thumbnailshare/AlbumID=49229867/a=5912525_49066270/t_=5912525) put together for Mike Rea and everyone supporting him. Mike is continuing his recovery: Hair Trim Today (http://mikerea.blogspot.com/2006/08/hair-trim-today.html).
A nice article in the Thoroubred Times Jockey Baze recalls the rush of riding Lost in the Fog (http://www.thoroughbredtimes.com/todaysnews/newsview.asp?recno=65838&subsec=1). It includes the following excerpt:
"He made my job real easy, he had tons of speed, but he wasn't real crazy about it," said Baze, who was aboard Lost in the Fog for 13 of his 14 career starts. "If someone wanted to go out there and go faster, he'd relax and sit off of him. Just a very nice, easy horse to ride."
I am still amazed that the day Lost in the Fog was diagnosed with terminal cancer, the same day Russell Baze rode seven winners taking his streak to nine winners, he had time to give us an interview on The Fog (update 481 (http://www.timwoolleyracing.com/news/2006/08/barbaro_updates_43.php)).

Update 509: Just spoke to Peter Brette, who had heard from Michael Matz. Barbaro had another good day.
If you want more insight into my morning exploits (i.e. want to see some of Fair Hill), check this Fair Hill clip (http://www.timwoolleyracing.com/movies/fairhill.wmv), provided to us by HRTV. I am even in it a couple of times! Thanks Tina for sending this over. Tina, who works for HRTV, put this together. Tina used to gallop at Fair Hill, for Dr. Fisher and John Kimmel.

There are to many emotions here to deal with. We cry tears of happiness for Barbaro but the sadness of Lost in the fog and Now Saint Liam! All illness and accidents here all have different causes. It is so hard to say good bye....
We must think always of that wonderful place with the rainbow bridge were they can run free and be wild without getting hurt and abused in any way....
They are always in our thoughts......

Wednesday Morning, thanks Alex:
Update 512: Another comfortable night last night for Barbaro (tuesday night). Just saw Michael Matz coming on to the track for my third set. Michael did mention that Dean Richardson had said Barbaro will be on TV this morning. I think he said 7:30am on PBS.
Another beautiful morning in Fair Hill. I am currently jogging around on Chappy as I talk...holding on to the neck strap with my left hand!
updated 7:05am
Update 511: Bernadini worked on tuesday (Albertrani looks to a big weekend (http://drf.com/news/article/77827.html)) in preparation for the Travis, going 5/8ths in 1:02.12. This will be the last of three works he has had since his facile win in the Jim Dandy. Excerpt:
With exercise rider Simon Harris aboard, Bernardini went in fractions of 13.08 seconds, 25.91, 38.00, and 50.12 seconds and galloped out six furlongs in 1:14.36. He pulled up seven furlongs in 1:28.39. It was his third and final move in between his nine-length Jim Dandy score and the Travers.
"It looked like he worked really good this morning, looked like he was just galloping down the lane,'" said Albertrani, who moved the work up from Wednesday to beat potential wet weather.
This appears to be a nice easy work, where he quickened slightly in the final quarter. I assume it was designed just to keep him ready for saturday. He will probably just do a couple of routine gallops in the meantime.
The Bloodhorse also noted the work: Trainer Albertrani Has Bull's-Eye on Back (http://racing.bloodhorse.com/viewstory.asp?id=34980) and includes information on the likely field:
Expected to challenge Bernardini in the Travers is Haskell Invitational Handicap (gr. I) winner Bluegrass Cat, Minister's Bid, Doctor Pleasure, High Cotton, and Hesanoldsalt.
"I think post position will play a little bit of importance in this race," Albertrani said. "I would rather be on the outside of High Cotton and Bluegrass Cat. We're just going to run our race and whatever happens is going to happen."
I think (not certain) the post position draw is today.
Here is a little more on poor St. Liam from the Daily Racing Form: Saint Liam dies after freak fall (http://www.drf.com/news/article/77810.html), excerpt:
"Apparently he was just goofing off, and he fell," Bramlage said. "Horses' legs are made to go front-to-back very efficiently, but they don't go side-to-side very well. Somehow he got his leg underneath him and just so happened to land on top of the leg."
Bramlage said the horse arrived at the hospital at approximately 3:30 p.m. Eastern. The decision to euthanize the horse was made approximately 45 minutes later after Saint Liam's broken leg was radiographed.
"On the X-rays you could see that there wasn't anyplace at all where you could put any screws to stabilize the leg," Bramlage said. "There were no options to stabilize it or put it in a cast."
Bramlage also said that the fracture had broken the skin, and that "infection was an issue."
Thoroughbred Times: Saint Liam euthanized because of leg fracture (http://thoroughbredtimes.com/todaysnews/newsview.asp?recno=65951&subsec=6) and Bloodhorse: Horse of the Year Saint Liam Dead (http://news.bloodhorse.com/viewstory.asp?id=34983).

Hello, I'm a long time reader but a brand new poster - I love the COTH forum and have gained invaluable information here from some truly wonderful people. I wanted my first post to be a cheer for Barbaro, his "team", and VB for the super timely continuing updates. Along with the rest of you I've rejoiced about the good days and cried over the bad ones. Right now all seems right - the latest video of Bobby out grazing with Dr. Richardson is just awesome. They both look so happy. I watched several times - just couldn't get enough of it!
I light candles daily for Bobby, and now as well for poor Lost in the Fog and Saint Liam.

Update 514: Dave Wallace, assistant trainer for Tom Albertrani, has agreed to provide us brief updates on Bernadini as we approach the Travers. He noted how well Bernadini worked yesterday (see update 511 for details of the work). Dave said that as he was watching him start his breeze, you would not know he was breezing unless you were clocking him. Anyway, they were very pleased with the work and he has come out of the breeze in very good shape. Today Bernadini walked in the shedrow (note: this is quite usual the day after a work). Tomorrow he will return to the track, and gallop a little bit. I'll catch up with Dave tomorrow to follow up.

Those rubs (well, scarring now) are from the sling used for the pool recovery after his first, initial surgery. I'm fairly certain that's touched on in one of the previous updates from VB/Tim Woolley.

I have to admit, I got quite choked up to see pulling Dr. Anderson as he was walking. WOW! About his side, I beg to differ about that being a scar. Yes, it might scar somewhat, but not as much as may think. He might not at all, or when healing is complete he might end up with a line or a few small spots. The pink and the white is the new skin coming in before it gets pigment then hair. I only know this because my vet talked me down from a panic attack and explained what to look for when my foal had a dinner plate sized abcess.

Update 516: Just spoke to Peter Brette (5:30 pm), and while he as been at the Fair Hill barn all day he had just heard from Michael. Barbaro has had another good day.
Update 515: A quick update from Rachel at Kennett Florist (timestamp: 8:29 pm):
Lots to do at NBC today! We had breakfast for the staff; bagels, spreads, fruit salad, juice and coffee. They were piled high in the main area before Alie could finish setting up. Much appreciation was expressed as usual.
This afternoon when I went up with our treats for Bobby and staff I had a chance to ask if the Jackson's would be invited to Friday's event, and they are going to extend the invitation. Also heard from a staff member that they were going to get a total on the Barbaro fund donations that have been made in Dr R's honor and present him with that in a card on Friday. It's just so exciting! We're working on finalizing all the gifts... will post about them after Friday, in case anyone is snooping LOL!
Also, passed Sabina as we were heading in (she held the door for us) and was hoping to have a chance to talk to her, but she was gone by the time I got out. Can't wait to post for you all on Friday! Thanks again for everything!!
WE BELIEVE!!
The post position draw has occured for the Travers: Classic Winner Bernardini Even-Money Favorite in Travers (http://racing.bloodhorse.com/viewstory.asp?id=34990) with Bernadini drawing post position 5:
With a compact field in the Travers and a long run to the first turn, post positions will not be extremely important. Bernardini drew post 5 with jockey Javier Castellano.
"The horse makes it a lot easier for Javier," Albertrani said. "He's easy to rate and he never fights the rider. Javier is very patient with him and never overreacts."
The following poem Barbaro's Goodnight Whisperer (http://forums.delphiforums.com/timwoolley/messages?msg=469.6) includes the following horse banter:
Still, Barbaro wishes Bernadini and Bluegrass Cat Good News.
To Preakness and Haskell Winners - sporting their lucky horseshoes,
"Yahoo Jim Dandy King" - dominating one the toughest races,
"May Luck ride with you Bluegrass Cat at Travers, next of this week's races."
"Would have loved to see it for myself," says Barbaro beaming wide.
Bernadini tosses a look his way saying, "rather had you by my side."
"Competitive sports with friendly banter, that's what I love to see,"
snorts Blue Grass Cat through video cam jamming just like Bernadini.

It is so sad about St. Liam. BUt is more acceptable I think because it was a freak accident. Track injuries seem to be more related to age, surface and other man made inventions. RIP sweet St. Liam.....

Thursday Morning from Alex~
Update 519: Another comfortable night last night for Barbaro (wednesday night). Just saw Michael Matz coming back from the track. He had just gotten a message from Dr. Richardson this morning. Michael also reiterated to me his positive report from his visit with Bobby yesterday.
My last set, I breezed one 3/8 mile in a comfortable 38 and am now walking back up to the track on Chappy. Just passing Peter who is saying to please express his thanks to everyone for all of your support. It's another gorgeous morning in Fair Hill.
updated thursday 7:17am
Update 518: The Jackson's are running Enticing today at York: Lael Stables homebred Enticing puts undefeated record on line in Nunthorpe (http://thoroughbredtimes.com/todaysnews/newsview.asp?recno=65962&subsec=3). You will note two unusual things about this spot for their horse. She is running against older horses (she is two) and against the boys. This type of placement of a horse is perhaps a little more common in the UK than it would be in the US (pretty much unheard of):
The lone two-year-old in the open field is Enticing, one of two females among the Nunthorpe entrants. The other female is the five-year-old Paris House mare Mecca's Mate, winner of the 2005 Land O'Burns Stakes.
Racing at York is beautiful!
Jeannine Edwards sent me this e-mail about ESPN's Travers coverage on saturday:
We are planning a brief Barbaro update in the show Sat (5-7pm ESPN) as part of the news segment. We will also have a separate tribute to LITF, since we are televising the King's Bishop live and he won it last year. We are doing a feature on the matchup between Bernardini and Bluegrass Cat... why each trainer thinks their horse is better and how they compare. They've never run against each other... Should be interesting. Right now that feature is also scheduled to air on SportsCenter Friday night at 6pm and possibly 11pm. (Last month when we covered the Jim Dandy, we did a 2:30 minute feature on Bernardini, the Preakness, and how Barbaro's injury affected Bernardini's connections. That feature was also on SportsCenter the night before the show.) We also have a feature on Sheik Mohammed in Dubai (owner of Bernardini)... one of our Associate Producers, Joan Ciampi, produced this one and she's very excited about it. We have 3 Associate Producers on this show, Tim Turrell and Chris DeMaio are the other 2 and they put together most of the features and taped elements you see on the telecasts. They all do a super job! Right now we are also scheduled to do a "behind the scenes" interview with Tom Albertrani (who I used to work with at Belmont, we galloped together for Mark Casse) we will accompany him out in the morning as he trains B. and get an up close look and his insight on the horse. It's a 2-hour show with 4 races, so we'll have the usual pre-race analysis and post-race interviews, etc.
In a follow up e-mail Jeannine noted that they will also have some coverage on St. Liam (co presenter Jerry Bailey rode St. Liam in his final start) and that there are 46 people at ESPN involved in putting this show together!

Hello everyone. I am Mike Rea's sister, Cathy. When I arrived at Kernan today Mike had Barbaro's letter ready and asked would I send it to Barbaro. So here it is:
Wed. Aug. 23rd 2006
Dear Barbaro,
Thank you for being a super star and thinking of me. People write on your web site and talk to me. There is no other way they would have talked to me because they talked to you first. Your trainer and owners are so famous and that way I get mentioned on a equal basis as you do. I feel like there is no other way those people would have considered me in their thoughts if they hadn't considered you first. It is very touching that I am considered by the same caliber of people who considered you. I feel privledged because of all this. I just want the story to show people what my life is about and how much my family loves me and how much I love them. Thank you Barbaro so much. My prayers and dreams are with you.
Mike Rea
As you can tell, I didn't edit any of his words. Mike is so overwhelmed with everyone caring so much about him. Again my thanks to everyone for helping my brother with his recovery. Cathy Rea Bosley
The above message was also posted on the discussion board: Mike's Message to Barbaro (http://forums.delphiforums.com/timwoolley/messages?msg=516.1). I think Round Pond is nearly ready to make her first start for Michael Matz, look for her in the entries at Monmouth.

Absolutely a must read on mcnbc.com:
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/14106712/from/RS.4/
Here's a small excerpt:
Barbaro is a horse who continues to demonstrate what it means to be a thoroughbred. Intelligent and strong, showing a will to live beyond anything we’ve seen in four decades of watching horses do what they were bred to do.
Barbaro’s struggle for survival has provided inspiration for Internet poets and his daily regimen has been chronicled nightly on network broadcasts whenever newsworthy developments arose. His story reached out and touched even more people than the remarkable Afleet Alex did a few years ago.
The racing business may be trending downward but a nation has shown it cares about what happens to Barbaro. It is for that reason he will get my vote for Horse of the Year 2006, an honor he is unlikely to win no matter how his story ends.
Wow....tears and smiles.

Update 523: OK, they are trying: Lost in the Fog 'Not Done Yet,' Gilchrist Says (http://news.bloodhorse.com/viewstory.asp?id=35015), excerpt:
Returning to his barn after spending the previous five days in Florida for the Ocala Breeders' yearling auction, Gilchrist said Lost in the Fog is being treated in his stall with medications designed to shrink two football sized tumors found in his spleen and beneath his spine along his back, as well as a third, smaller mass. The trainer said he was encouraged by the 4-year-old colt's feistiness.
"This horse is not done yet," he said. "We are trying to shrink the tumors if that would be possible. If we can shrink them 50 percent, there's a chance we can remove them (surgically). It's a long shot but long shots happen all the time in this game. It's something to hang on to. We're not dead in the water yet."
and
Gilchrist said Lost in the Fog, who returned to the stable Aug. 20 after a week at the University of California at Davis' Large Animal Clinic, is "doing fine and holding his weight well."
He said the popular colt with the oddball blaze has been given walks outside his stall and has been happily enjoying the carrots, apples and other things sent to the barn by admirers. The get-well cards, e-mail wishes and flower bouquets have been overwhelming, Gilchrist said.
"I finally took all the flowers up to the (administration) office and gave them to all the girls there," he said.
and
The trainer had originally planned to allow the horse to live out his final days in familiar surroundings and to be cared for by those that know him best. Without giving into what he called "false hope," he now thinks it could be some time before a decision to euthanize the colt might be necessary.
"He still has quality life ahead of him," Gilchrist said.
In particular, he said, the horse has enjoyed being reunited with his favorite human, groom Pascual Garcia.
"Everybody is glad that he's back," Gilchrist said of the atmosphere at the stable. "Everybody realizes the situation. But I won't let anybody get down. I refuse to allow any negativity."
Update 522: A couple of articles on St. Liam's untimely death: Owner Warren reflects on Saint Liam's tragic death (http://thoroughbredtimes.com/todaysnews/newsview.asp?recno=65970&subsec=1) and Freakish Accident Causes Saint Liam's Death (http://breeding.bloodhorse.com/viewstory.asp?id=35007). The articles highlight the severity of the break and thus the need for the very tough decision to euthanize St. Liam. ESPN will provide some St. Liam coverage during their saturday racing coverage (5 - 7 pm). A nice post on the discussion board of a visit to DancingInMyDreams (http://forums.delphiforums.com/timwoolley/messages?msg=532.1). We have a Fair Hill horse to follow on saturday in Saratoga: Hard to Argue With Sweet Talker in Ballston Spa (http://racing.bloodhorse.com/viewstory.asp?id=34996). Here is an excerpt:
Sweet Talker missed winning her second grade I race in the Diana Handicap at nine furlongs July 29 at Saratoga. Angara rallied along the outside to beat her by a head.
"I thought she ran a huge race," said trainer H. Graham Motion. "It's tough to be disappointed when she ran so hard. That race might have been longer than what she wants to go."
Motion wasn't originally considering the Ballston Spa because it came up a little sooner than Sweet Talker's customary five-week spread between races.
"I had not originally planned on this last race," Motion said. "But she came out of the Diana so well that we thought this would be a good spot for her. She's a very tough filly. I think the distance will help her."
I saw Sweet Talker this morning, coming off the wood chip track. I think she was shipping up to Saratoga this afternoon (by horse van).
Finally, a Cecil Whig (http://www.cecilwhig.com/) photographer was at Fair Hill this morning taking pictures (of me and Tim). I think they are writing an article to celebrate 100 days since the Preakness. Anyway, a lot of jovial banter was had as we were coming onto the track from Michael Matz's crew leaving the track. There are people reading the discussion boards (http://forums.delphiforums.com/timwoolley/start) thinking some of the discussion is quite amusing!

Update 526: Kathy Anderson called and she had visited Barbaro a little later in the afternoon (she left about 5:30 pm). She was there as Dr. Richardson had Barbaro out grazing. All was well. She did note Bobby saw a goat on his way back into his stall which interested him. Kathy also noted that Bobby is weighed each day (he walks over a weigh machine on his way back into the ICU) so the weight gain that is being reported is not just a visual thing, but documented weight gain from the scales.
Update 525: Just spoke to Dave Wallace (Tom Albatrani's assistant). He reported that Bernardini is doing well as he readies for the Travers. Today he galloped about a mile and and eighth. He was led to the track, was handed off to a pony and was ponied the wrong way (anti-clockwise) for a half mile. He turned around, left the pony, and jogged about three eighths of a mile before his gallop. He is in great spirits, yet very self controlled. He will likely do something similar tomorrow (but I will catch up with Dave to confirm once he has trained). Dave galloped Cigar, so I will quiz him about that once the Travers is over.
They (Albatrani) have a runner tomorrow in a grade 1 stake at Saratoga, Balletto: Fleet Indian's speed, durability hard to beat (http://drf.com/drfNewsArticle.do?NID=77877&subs=0&arc=0).
Update 524: Peter Brette just called. He visited Barbaro this afternoon (about 3pm). He was very upbeat in his report, and also noted Barbaro was devouring "stud muffins" during the time Peter was visiting.

Good deal, folks. LITF and Gilchrist are doing their part. Now we have to do ours. Lets get some candles lit and start the energy flowing. Perhaps we should decide on just ONE name for LITF's candles--there were about 600 candles under Fog and also Foggy. To divide is NOT to conquer, in this case. I vote for foggy, or LITF. Friday morning from Alex:
Update 527: This Baltimore Sun article provides further details on the current status of Barbaro: Barbaro's surgeon pleased with colt's progress (http://www.baltimoresun.com/sports/horseracing/bal-barbaro24,0,618773.story?coll=bal-sports-headlines) and reveals the left hind hoof has grown a centimeter, excerpt:
Richardson said Barbaro's hoof has grown about one centimeter since the hoof wall was removed in early July and his broken right leg has healed well enough that without the left-foot laminitis, he would be out of the cast.
A nice Sports Illustrated article on Michael Matz: What could've been...
As Barbaro fights for life, Matz reflects on fateful day (http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2006/writers/tim_layden/08/24/barbaro.update/). A short excerpt:
Matz is a competitor, a three-time Olympic equestrian. "It hurts to be standing on the sideline,"' he says. "I wish I could send Barbaro out there to run. I can't, and I have to accept that we were lucky to have him as long as we did.'"
And finally: Barbaro casts long shadow over Travers: Injured horse has greatly boosted sport with incredible will to survive (http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/14106712/). I think this site confirms the subheader. I enjoyed this excerpt:
In essence he is much more. Barbaro is a horse who continues to demonstrate what it means to be a thoroughbred. Intelligent and strong, showing a will to live beyond anything we've seen in four decades of watching horses do what they were bred to do.
Barbaro's struggle for survival has provided inspiration for Internet poets and his daily regimen has been chronicled nightly on network broadcasts whenever newsworthy developments arose.

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. - It was like a scene out of “Bull Durham,” the baseball movie in which a veteran catcher, Kevin Costner’s Crash, is schooling young batterymate, Tim Robbins’ Nuke, on the cliches he’ll need to know when he makes it to “the show”: “I’m just happy to be here" ... “I couldn’t have done it without my teammates.” Non-incendiary PR.
The atmosphere was like that Wednesday at the post-position draw for the $1 million Travers Stakes, with the two favorites' trainers, Tom Albertrani and Todd Pletcher, lavishing praise on each other's horses.
“Bernardini has been awesome every step of his life,” said Pletcher of the favorite. “I thought Bluegrass Cat’s Haskell was a breakthrough performance but he’ll need to step it up another notch on Saturday.”
“Todd’s horse looks like the one we’ll have to beat,” said Albertrani. “My horse has been galloping strongly and he’s had three works since the Jim Dandy. If he wins on Saturday then maybe we’ll start thinking about the championship.”
Pletcher knows what it might take for his colt to win an Eclipse Award in racing’s glamour division: “We’ll have to sweep the table.”
John Ward, who will send out both Minister’s Bid and Dr. Pleasure, also was generous in praise of the favorite: “Bernardini is by far one of the nicest animals we’ve seen in a decade."
“If he wins this race, continues to win this fall and beats older horses . . . we’ll just have to wait and see,” said Albertrani of Bernardini, the even-money favorite on the overnight line but more likely will be odds-on in the betting on Saturday‘s 137th renewal of the “Mid-Summer Derby.”
Such is the giant shadow cast by an ill-fated Kentucky Derby hero, a remarkable fighter named Barbaro. “Certainly he’s everyone’s sentimental choice,” Pletcher said.
In essence he is much more. Barbaro is a horse who continues to demonstrate what it means to be a thoroughbred.
Barbaro has done more for his sport than any horse that might win the Travers, Jockey Club Gold Cup and Breeders’ Cup Classic. That horse certainly would have earned a 3-year-old title and the sweep even could be enough to upset divisional leading Lava Man as this country’s top handicap runner. Much can happen between now and November.
The championship season begins in earnest Saturday and all eyes will be focused on prohibitive choice Bernardini. Historians will note that 15 of the last 18 odds-on favorites have gotten the Travers job done. Indeed it’s been 24 years since a prohibitive favorite lost this race, Affirmed’s disqualification in 1978 notwithstanding.
Compared to Bernardini, his six rivals are cast in supporting roles. Clearly, 2-1 second choice Bluegrass Cat is the most accomplished with placings in the Kentucky Derby and Belmont prior to his record-setting 7-length romp at the Jersey Shore.Despite his impressive Haskell, Bluegrass Cat was no cinch to start in the Travers. Pletcher, whose program is geared to give his runners from four to six weeks of recovery time between starts, was concerned about racing Bluegrass Cat back in 20 days but in recent days has happy with his colt’s energy level coming into Saturday’s race.
What should concern Pletcher more is that Bernardini is much faster, has the benefit of a race over the sometimes quirky Saratoga surface, and is coming off a less enervating effort with longer rest.
Further, unlike Bernardini’s Preakness victory, Bluegrass Cat never has carried scaleweight of 126 pounds successfully and picks up a not insignificant eight pounds from the Haskell. Pletcher will also give High Cotton a chance to step up in class.
A Dixie Union colt from the A. P. Indy mare, Happy Tune, High Cotton has won half of his six starts this season including the Grade 3 Northern Dancer. Most recently was narrowly defeated by Deputy Glitters in the Grade 2 Ohio Derby. That colt defeated Bluegrass Cat earlier this year in the Tampa Bay Derby.
Ward has a pair of lightly raced runners, the very promising Minister’s Bid, second in Bernardini’s Jim Dandy, and the talented underachiever, Dr. Pleasure. “I like that both colts are training here, they’re fresh and that they’ll both move up in their first starts around two turns,” said Ward. “I’ve been on both sides and this time I’m the hunter. Strange things sometimes happen to favorites at Saratoga.”
Hesanoldsalt comes off a sharp allowance win over the track for Travers-winning Hall of Famer Nick Zito, but the colt never has finished in the money in a graded stakes race. Rank outsider Kip DeVille completes the field.
Bernardini figures to win Travers 137 in a romp. To be regarded in the same celebratory light as Barbaro, he had better.

Thanks VB for the updates and the MSNBC article.
Yes, Barbaro has more of what it takes to be a GREAT Thoroughbred than any I have seen in a long time. The truly great ones have that something that helps them go beyond the odds.
I've been a fan of racing since the 50's. I recall thinking that Secretariat would be beat when he started to run ahead in the Belmont...but I soon sat there in awe :) Someday, perhaps we will see a "little Barbaro" run with that courage and form that is Barbaro. I hope so.
Seeing Barbaro, walking and alive Wednesday on TV was such a wonderful blessing.
The Industry should make him Horse of the Year, for no one could possibly have made as many fans as he has, nor garner as much media attention!
GO BARBARO!

I am keeping my fingers crossed for Horse of the Year, too. I am hoping that those that vote take a real hard look at the true definition of HOTY-is it simply money earned? Most important races won? Well, Bobby can't win those. BUT, if it (as it should be in ALL ".. of the Year" awards) looks at who did the MOST for the sport, embodies the SPIRIT of the sport, FOUGHT an uphill battle, made HUGE positive steps for future competitors and was a truly OUTSTANDING competitor, well, Bobby is the one. He has brought more interst into the sport than ever imagined-sadly, through a tragedy. BUT he (and his team) have brough humanity and personality into what can sometimes be deemed a comodity sport, where the athletes aren't viewed as individuals (by non horse poeple, that is!). I hope they are all recognized for their heart.

Thanks, Tim/Alex:
Update 529: My morning galloping was a little messed up in terms of horses to ride, so Tim put me on three extra, which turned out to be quite cool. The first was Randy's Bullet, who I had not ridden for a long time. We went out back and jogged the hills (the ground really needs the rain) and I met a fox on my way home. The second was Gator Nation. Some of you wondered if he was OK, since he was scratched from a race at Laurel. Yes, he's in great form, galloped a mile and a half and went very well. The reason for the scratch ? He was on the "also eligible" list, thus not in the main body of the race. He did not draw in (no scratches) and was thus a scratch himself. Finally I rode Something Wild, galloped him a mile, and he went well. As he was training Michael Matz and Peter Brette had Round Pond out training (we were all on the dirt track). She surely is a good looking filly, and is getting ready to run very soon.
More coverage on Lost in the Fog: Lost in the Fog undergoing treatment to shrink tumors (http://thoroughbredtimes.com/todaysnews/newsview.asp?recno=65984&subsec=1), which includes the following:
"He's doing well. I was just giving him a handful of carrots a minute ago," Gilchrist said from his barn at Golden Gate Fields on Thursday evening. "We are treating him to try to shrink the tumors he has.
"If we could do that, they would become operable, and then he would have a chance. We've gone to a little more drastic measures using a few drugs that we didn't have before."
Gilchrist said Lost in the Fog will undergo a sonogram in ten to 12 days to check on his progress. In the meantime, Lost in the Fog is living in his stall, eating, and walking twice a day, much like a normal horse.

Per Alex~
Update 530: Dave Wallace (Tom Albertrani's assistant) just called and reported all systems are a go for Bernardini for tomorrow's Travers. Bernardini did much the same today as he did yesterday, galloping a mile and a quarter after jogging back a half a mile and then jogging forward. While Dave does not gallop Bernardini he does gallop Balletto, their runner today in the Grade 1 Personal Ensign (http://drf.com/drfNewsArticle.do?NID=77877&subs=0&arc=0). He said she is doing well, acting like she did when she went into her last race (a close second in the Go For Wand). Its a small field, and Todd Pletcher's horse (Fleet Indian) is the obvious concern and clear betting favourite.

I haven't posted here before but I've been reading these reports daily. First, of course, to find out how Barbaro is doing. But also, I love the little reports by V.B. on the daily events at the track. I have had no exposure to the racing world before and when I sitting here in my office in conjested So Cal, reading about riding out and seeing foxes etc...it all sounds so...uncorporate, so romantic, if you will. Also, the daily accounts, have made me less wary and more respectful of the horse racing industry.

Update 531: Kennett Florist have just returned from NBC with this birthday report:
OK Gang, take a breath... We're back from NBC!!
The "party" was a huge success! Dr R was very surprised to which he stated "it's not my birthday". We told him "today it is!" He was overwhelmed with the gifts, cards, flowers and all that had been sent. I am forwarding the pictures to Alex and he can hopefully post a couple.
We got there just before 11:30 to set everything up. We were in a more secluded area. We had the gifts and flowers laid out over two tables with the cakes and ice cream. The carrot cake from Bobby had two big carrots on the top, and the choc/vanilla cake had a picture of Bobby (from one of his first times out grazing) with green and blue trim on the white frosting.
Dr Sweeney had told Dr Richardson that they were going to have a meeting at 12:00 and she made sure we were ready when she went to meet him. She had notified a bunch of people so there would be plenty there to yell surprise. (Unfortunately, Mr and Mrs Jackson were unable to attend.) Dr Sweeney told us when she was going to get him and we lit the candles... He was very surprised. He blew out his candles and started to cut the cakes (the one thing he said he knew how to do). Dr Sweeney and Alie took over on cake duty and I dished out the ice cream so the man of honor could enjoy his cake and open some presents. He was overwhelmed by the gifts. Because of your contributions, we were able to get substantial gift certificates to two very nice restaurants here in town, theater tickets (gift certificate), three different golf course gift certificates that he can use either for greens times, the pro shop, or the restaurants, a packet of golf cart tickets for the golf course he belongs to, as well as a gift certificate to the pro shop at that same course. We also made up a very large gourmet basket of goodies; swiss chocolates, pastas and gourmet sauces, plates, glasses, napkins... the works. It even had a special box of note cards with a big brown bay on the front. We decked the place out with baloons (including one that sang Happy Birthday)! The triple crown arrangement was a huge hit... he really liked the idea of that. All in all it was absolutely wonderful. Thank you so much for letting us be a part of this, you all have been so generous and sweet to talk to, email, etc.
And of course, Bobby had some baskets of carrots and his favorite treats! They called us this morning asking if we were bringing carrots, so we loaded the big guy up good!
Also, almost forgot... We made up a big "publisher's clearinghouse" type check from the Barbaromaniacs, made out to UPenn Barbaro Fund in honor of Dr Richardson. Dr Sweeney presented him with the check that was made out for $3,851.00 to date. We let him know that others are donating on or closer to his birthday! You all are amazing!!!!
WE BELIEVE!!!
Alie, Rachel and the gang at Kennett Florist
Congratulations to everyone who contributed, amazing.

Update 534: Just spoke to Peter. He had just spoken to Michael who visited Barbaro this afternoon. The report remains the same. Michael took Barbaro out for a walk.
It looks like Edgar will plan another visit to see Barbaro when he returns from Saratoga: One ride enough to impress Prado (http://www.drf.com/news/article/77927.html):
It is times like this when Prado really misses Barbaro, who had won all of his starts before the Preakness. Prado said he keeps in contact frequently with Michael Matz, the trainer of Barbaro, and with the colt's owners, Roy and Gretchen Jackson. Prado said when the Saratoga meet ends he plans to take another trip to the New Bolton Center in Kennett Square, Pa., to visit Barbaro.
"I miss him overall because he was a special horse who ran good races," Prado said. "Knowing that his life is in jeopardy, I'm always thinking of him and hope that he continues on the road to recovery."
Update 533: Upenn's thank you site includes more pictures of Dr. Richardson's birthday celebrations: Thank You (http://www.vet.upenn.edu/newsandevents/news/thankyou.htm). It includes the following caption:
Thank you to everyone who helped contribute to the wonderful party celebrating Dr. Richardson's birthday. He was truly touched and honored by the generosity of the Barbaromaniacs in making this a special occasion.
The "Barbaro Effect" continues, this time: Barbaro Injury Highlights Need for Laminitis Research Funding (http://news.bloodhorse.com/viewstory.asp?id=35030). The article concludes:
While Barbaro and his doctors wage battle against laminitis, hundreds of additional horses will be diagnosed with the disease each day. Funding laminitis research is vital to unraveling the unanswered questions about the disease and developing reliable preventative and therapeutic measures, for all of the equine population.
Finally, Discreet Cat got his US racing account underway. I had thought of highlighting him as a horse to follow going into today's race, but we seem to already have a few to focus on. Anyway, Discreet Cat was an undefeated winner of the UAE Derby (Dubai) who has been in the US ever since. They have had a few niggling problems with him and finally got him to the races this afternoon at Saratoga: The Cat is Back; UAE Derby Winner Romps at Saratoga (http://racing.bloodhorse.com/viewstory.asp?id=35029). He may well contend for year end honours in the three year old division.
Update 532: Dr. Richardson posted a thankyou note to everyone (timestamp: 7:55pm):
Kathy Freeborn at the admissions desk here at NBC told me that this website was the best place to respond to the truly extraordinary birthday that I was given today at noon! To all of you who gave to the Barbaro fund and to me personally, I am deeply grateful. I don't claim to be a humble person (no one will argue that one too much!) but it is profoundly humbling and intimidating to be responsible for a patient that has this much love going his way. I am very grateful that there is so much concern out there for Barbaro (sorry, I cannot bring myself to call him Bobby......)and I assure you all that we all will continue to do our best for him. As you all know, he is a very special horse.
THANK YOU ALL.

Update 535: Those closest to Barbaro are to receive some well deserved awards: National Turf Writers to Honor 'Team Barbaro' (http://news.bloodhorse.com/viewstory.asp?id=35034) The following are excerpts:
"Team Barbaro" -- the group of Barbaro himself, owners Roy and Gretchen Jackson, trainer Michael Matz, assistant trainer and exercise rider Peter Brette and jockey Edgar Prado -- will receive the Mr. Fitz Award during the 47th annual NTWA Awards Dinner on Nov. 1 at The Olmstead in Louisville, Ky.
and
Richardson and the New Bolton Center will receive the Joe Palmer Award, named for the former New York Herald Tribune turf writer and presented annually for meritorious service to racing.
Round Pond is now ready for her return on sunday: Round Pond back to races (http://drf.com/news/article/77978.html). The following is an excerpt:
"It's always nice to have a horse of her quality," Matz said. "She's a real nice horse to be around, and she showed it last year in her 3-year-old season. John did a real nice job with her, and hopefully we can continue."
Round Pond is 6 for 8 lifetime, including a win in the Grade 1 Acorn Stakes at Belmont Park last year.
Round Pond shows five workouts this summer, with two on wood chips, at the Fair Hills training center in Maryland.
"She's come back good," Matz said. "She's had a long time in between races. We're happy with the way she's working. We're happy with her feet right now, and hopefully that will continue."
Today is of course a big day for three year olds, the Travers: Travers Analysis: Pletcher and the Accidental Rabbits (http://racing.bloodhorse.com/viewstory.asp?id=35002), but lets not forget Graham Motion has Sweet Talker running on the undercard. Tim has gone up for the weekend, so hopefully he will provide some first hand reports. Today's Barbaro morning update may be a little later this morning, just an FYI.

Update 537: Another comfortable night for Barbaro (friday night). Saw Michael Matz coming back from my second set this morning and he reported the good news.
Also, just a reminder that tonight will be another vigil at 7pm so wherever you are, whatever you're doing...spare a few thoughts for Barbaro and the Fog.

Simply amazing updates since Thursday afternoon! Thanks VB - you truly are an ambassador for racing for us neophytes! As others, my only exposure to racing has been watching the Triple Crown and Breeders Cup each year. Your updates do provide so much insight to the real world of racing.
I was thrilled to read the updates this morning about LITF! Super hard jingles are heading his way so that surgery will yet be an option for this courageous horse! I was reduced to tears reading how he was bouyed by being back with his groom. We humans DO make a difference!

Thanks, Alex:
Update 538: Just spoke to Tim, who was in the National Museum of Horse Racing (Saratoga). Barbara Livingston was doing a book signing as we talked, and there are pictures of Barbaro for sale. Tim was able to get on the backside of the racetrack this morning thanks to another trainer. He said all was quiet and calm before the big day of racing. The main track closed early (9 am), and people were putting their final preparations in place. He was positioned close to Bernadini's barn, but did not venture over in order to maintain their privacy. The weather should be good for racing, Tim said its a little cloudy, with intermittent showers, but pretty pleasant. He saw Steve Klesaris briefly last night, which reminds me, Master of Disaster (another Fair Hill trainee) is running in The King's Bishop, the race prior to the Travers.
A couple of nice pre-Travers articles. The first: A midsummer dream dashed: Prado, others wonder what Barbaro could have become (http://timesunion.com/AspStories/story.asp?storyID=511329&category=SPORTS&BCCode=HOME&newsdate=8/25/2006&TextPage=1), includes the following excerpts:
"Like they say, faith is the last thing you want to lose," Prado said Thursday. "The doctors had faith, and they continued to work real hard to make this happen. He's become one of the most popular horses ever."
and
"We always thought he was a great horse and who knows how good he could have been," Barbaro trainer Michael Matz said from Maryland. "Unfortunately, we'll never get the chance to see. I guess it just wasn't meant to be.
"But it would have been great to see them race. Bernardini looks like a real good horse and it just would have been great for the racing public."
The racing public and the animal-loving public continue to heap affection on Barbaro as he continues his gallant struggle.
"I think there are thousands of people who have been keeping the faith for him," Matz said. "The response, the outpouring, everything, and things are still coming in every day. Fruit baskets, signs, cards. It's really unbelievable the support people have given."
The second article: Bernardini? Bluegrass Cat? Travers will decide (http://www.courier-journal.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20060826/SPORTS0802/608260458/1002/SPORTS). The following is an excerpt:
As one of the most lightly raced Triple Crown race winners in modern times, Bernardini's sensational 5 1/4-length Preakness score was overshadowed by Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro's life-threatening breakdown 100 yards after the start.
"Understandably and deservedly so," Jimmy Bell, president of Darley USA, said of the emphasis on Barbaro. "Barbaro was, and is, a very unique and gifted horse. ... (Bernardini) has gone on about his business, and both horses are writing different scripts, and I think both are champions."

Update 539: Quick Fog update: Lost in the Fog Given 'Reasonable Chance' (http://news.bloodhorse.com/viewstory.asp?id=35041). An excerpt:
The doctor treating sprint champion Lost in the Fog for cancerous tumors said Friday that the colt has "a reasonable chance" of reducing them to a size that's conducive for chemotherapy or surgery.
Dr. Gary Magdesian, chief of equine medicine at University of California at Davis, said Friday that Lost in the Fog is being treated with Dexamethasone, a corticosteroid sometimes used in treating lymphoma.
"We want to see if (the tumors) will respond to the extent that they are reduced to a size that will make them amenable to surgery or chemotherapy," Magdesian said
Steve Willard left me a voice mail. Giacomo is doing fine after his race in the Pacific Classic. He went back to the track a couple of days ago and is training lightly. They are training him lightly and will take it one day at a time and see how he goes. I'll follow up with Steve in a week or so and see what their plans are. Just good to hear he is back to the track after the race.

Update 542: The Bloodhorse are the first with a Travers race report: Bernardini Bounds Away in Travers (http://racing.bloodhorse.com/viewstory.asp?id=35046), which includes the following excerpt:
Trainer Tom Albertrani said afterward that Bernardini would shoot for the Jockey Club Gold Cup (gr. I) at Belmont Park Oct. 7 next. Looming, of course, is the $4 million Breeders' Cup Classic Powered by Dodge (gr. I).
Before a crowd of 40,785, Castellano drove Bernardini to the lead heading into the clubhouse turn when he appeared he might get trapped behind Todd Pletcher-trained entrants High Cotton, who led coming out of the gate, and Bluegrass Cat on the outside. That proved to be the winning move as Bernardini overtook High Cotton easily and set a realistic pace while Bluegrass Cat stalked.
That's the way they ran until the head of the final turn when Bernardini responded to hand urging from Castellano to begin to pull away. Bluegrass Cat tried to stick but by the time the pair hit the top of the lane, it was clear that it was all over. Castellano gave Bernardini a light tap of the whip left-handed at the eighth pole but otherwise allowed his charge to run out.
I assume that light tap with the whip was when Bernardini swished his tail (as if to say, are you kidding me ?) It was very impressive. It is racings loss we were never able to see Barbaro and Bernardini compete. I am sure that is something both horses' connections would have truly wanted to witness (and have been quoted as such). Two great horses, no matter who wins end of year honors. Of course Discreet Cat might make it three!

VB.... Great updates today! Incredible news about LITF!!!!! Keep jingling for him.... Bobby is doing so well now but we need to keep the faith.....There has been alot of talk about the surfaces of the tracks. Is there anything different now then years ago? Did as many horses breakdown before? As a side note it is not only racing that must check its footing if you remember the footing for the stadium jumping in the Olympics in Athens was thought to have caused multiple injuries like the one to Royal Kaliber he bowed a tendon....and subsequently euthanized after colicing.... it is ALL footing that need to be monitored and checked......
Jingling in NY! Gotta go light some candles too.....

Sunday morning:
No news yet this morning on Barbaro, but please do not become complacent with your candles, jingles and thoughts. We have consistantly kept the candles well above the 1,000 mark, but twice last week they were at 1001 and 1003. (I lit about 20 each day.)
With everything going better than expected, this is the time, more than ever, to keep Barbaro on "the front burner" in your thoughts and hearts and minds.
Team Barbaro has done such a superlative job all the way around, but this is when we are needed MOST!

Update 546: Just spoke to Peter Brette, who was driving up to Monmouth when I called. The cast change has been completed and Dr. Richardson was happy with what he saw. I don't have any other details, but thought that was good enough for me for now!
Update 545: Bluegrass Cat is now retired: Bluegrass Cat Retired Due to Pastern Injury (http://news.bloodhorse.com/viewstory.asp?id=35053). The following was posted in the comments directly after the race by Susan E (updates: 56 (http://www.timwoolleyracing.com/news/2006/08/barbaro_updates_51.php) timestamp: 10:41pm)
Very impressive, Bernadini!
Everyone made it home safe!
Did anyone else think BGC was a bit stiff in his right rear leg when he galloped out? Maybe I'm seeing things that aren't there.
Apparently you were not "seeing things".
Update 544: Just spoke to Michael Matz. They are planning to replace Barbaro's cast today on his right hind. While this was not something we had anticipated, I think it is basically because Dr. Richardson is planning a few days off early next week, and wanted to get this done before he was able to relax. It has been a few weeks since the previous cast change, so that makes sense to me. Once I hear anymore after the cast change, I will let you know.
On the racing front today, we have two fillies races to focus on and a european race. I was talking to Michael as he was getting ready for Round Pond's debut at Monmouth. Apparently there is a scratch and it is now a five horse field for the Grade 2 Molly Pitcher: Round Pond back to races (http://www.drf.com/news/article/77978.html). The Jackson's Stormy Kiss, trained by Barclay Tagg, is running in the Grade 1 Ballerina Stakes at Saratoga: Dubai Escapade looking to wire 'em (http://www.drf.com/drfNewsArticle.do?NID=77979&subs=0&arc=0). Finally, the Jackson bred George Washington is running at Goodwood: George Washington returns (http://www.drf.com/news/article/77973.html) after a three month absense. He won 2,000 Guiness at Newmarket on May 6. This is considered one of the English Classics (like a Triple Crown race). You can imagine that was an amazing weekend for the Jackson's.

I think there is something wrong with the candle site. For the past two weeks, I have been lighting candles and they don't show up with my initials and/or the number of candles lit at the top doesn't change. This morning I lit l0 candles. When I started to light them, there were l,085 candles lit, when I finished lighting them, there was still l,085. In the beginning, this didn't happen, only in the last two or three weeks.

Update 547: Round Pond was a very close second in her first start for Michael Matz: PROMENADE GIRL HEADS ROUND POND IN G2 MOLLY PITCHER AT MONMOUTH; GOTTCHA GOLD, PRETTY IMPOSING TRIUMP (http://monmouthpark.com/news.asp?id=6350). Excerpt:
"She ran a good race considering she's been out so long," Matz said. "I was disappointed with the result, but I was pleased with her."
Bravo said, "I wish we had faster fractions. It was her first race in a while. She had her nose in front at the eighth pole. She ran a winning race."
I just spoke to Peter and they were pleased with her effort. He thinks she will come along a lot for the race. Unfortunately I did not get to see the race.
I don't have a Barbaro update this evening, and since Peter and Michael were at Monmouth its unlikely I'll get one later. Peter reiterated to me Dr. Richardson's positive report from this morning.
This site will be featured in the Cecil Whig (http://www.cecilwhig.com/) tomorrow, I think on the front page, celebrating 100 days since the Preakness.

I don't want to be a downer, but I've just got to get this off my chest. The update about the early cast change... it bothers me. The reason being, I seem to remember recent articles saying that he was doing so good that it could be 2-3 weeks before they needed to change the cast. And now that they decided to do it this week instead of 2-3 weeks into the future... The last time I remember them doing an early, spontaneous cast change was when he had that... infection... in July... and, you know, July was scary. Now I'm scared (:( )
Someone please tell me I'm paranoid so that I can stop worrying! I wanterd to get this out because if I kept it in and in a few days they said something was going wrong... that would just bother the hell outta me. Like I saw it coming and didn't do anything... Ahh! I just remember how in July they tried to downplay the whole early cast-change thing... and then it got scary so fast. I'm on a hair trigger!
I'm EBO
Aug. 28, 2006, 02:08 AM
Strawberry F. I hope you're being paranoid. I don't think the cast change is all that early--and the reason they gave, Dr. R. is taking a few days off, seems reasonable enough.
What bothers me is no update tonight.
More candles. More Jingles.

Update 548: The New York Times has the following article: Bernardini and Barbaro: A Rivalry That Wasn't (http://www.nytimes.com/2006/08/28/sports/othersports/28racing.html?_r=1&adxnnl=1&oref=slogin&adxnnlx=1156757440-ED13dsVpmMuLRIdqEhmfPg) that does a nice job of highlighting both horses' accomplishments without make sweeping statements on who is the better. I also like the note of comparison with Cigar from Tom Albertani. He should know as he is closely connected to both horses. I think that comparison just illustrates that this year we have been blessed with superb 3yos.
A quick recap from the races yesterday. We know Round Pond was a very close second, here is another report: Promenade Girl wins Molly Pitcher (http://drf.com/news/article/78013.html). Stormy Kiss (Jackson owned, Tagg trained) was third in the Ballerina: Dubai Escapade takes Ballerina (http://drf.com/news/article/78015.html) and George Washington (Jackson bred) was third O'BRIEN UPBEAT DESPITE GEORGE DEFEAT (http://www.sportinglife.com/racing/news/story_get.cgi?STORY_NAME=racing/06/08/27/RACING_Goodwood_Celebration.html) after a slow start.
Next weekend we will focus on the Woodward at Saratoga. Funny Cide is scheduled to run, he breezed 5/8ths in 1:00 in preparation for the race last thursday: Funny Cide Preps for Woodward With Bullet Work (http://racing.bloodhorse.com/viewstory.asp?id=35028), an excerpt:
"I thought the track was slow, but safe," Tagg said. "He really worked well over it. I thought it was a serious workout for him. But we wanted to be safe with him because he's going to run for big money next Saturday."
I am not sure when this morning's Barbaro update will occur. If Dr. Richardson is indeed on vacation it may be a little later, but he may well still be providing Michael his morning update, I just don't know.

Update 551: Dave Wallace (Tom Albertrani's assistant) just called to give us a quick update on Bernardini. A few things about the Travers itself. When they were leading Bernardini over for the Travers he was very cool, calm and collected. Dave said it was very impressive to see considering his youth and all the attention he was getting. After the Travers, leaving the test barn (all winners and some other runners are tested after a race to check for drugs etc.) he was bouncing and was very full of himself, as Dave noted, just proud of himself. Dave also mentioned Bernardini's reaction to Javier Castellano's light tap of the whip with his left hand ... which caused Bernardini to swish his tail and pin his ears, almost as if Bernardini was wondering what the problem was since he was winning so easily at that point! (I think I noted something similar in my update directly after the race.)
Anyway, Dave said he has come out of the race in great shape. He will hand walk around the shedrow for a few days (probably about three days) before he goes back to the track and starts training again. I will plan to follow up with Dave later in the week to see how he is progressing.
Update 550: New Bolton Center's press release concerning yesterday's cast change: Barbaro has cast change:
Veterinarians at Penn's George D. Widener Hospital changed the right hind leg cast of Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro yesterday, Sunday, August 27. "The cast was changed because there was a small crack in it," said Dr. Dean W. Richardson, Chief of Surgery. "Based on new radiographs that were taken, the leg looked excellent under the cast. The pastern joint looks completely fused, and there is only a small area in the long pastern bone that has a little farther to go before we take him out of the cast completely."
In addition, the radiographs showed that there were no signs of infection. The cast change took place under general anesthesia, and Barbaro had another successful pool recovery before returning to his stall.
The colt's left hind foot has laminitis, but Barbaro seems comfortable with that foot as well. The bandage on the left hind foot continues to be changed daily.
According to Dr. Richardson: "Barbaro is bright and happy this morning with an excellent appetite."
Barbaro remains in the Intensive Care Unit of the University of Pennsylvania's George D. Widener Hospital, where he is recovering from injuries suffered at the Preakness on May 20.
The next update will be posted on Tuesday, September 5 unless there is a significant change in Barbaro's condition.

Update 552: Thank you Cecil Whig for the lovely front page article: Online outpouring of support for Barbaro (http://www.cecilwhig.com/articles/2006/08/28/news/02.txt).
I asked Michael this morning if Dr. Richardson had finally gone away for a few days (this was after Michael had given me the morning report).
Michael said he had, and he also said he had told Dr. Richardson that given he was away on vacation there really was no need for the morning updates. They then wondered a little about what I would do ?
So I guess (and HOPE) Dr. Richardson will still be calling in the reports!

For my first set, I took a two-year-old to the woodchip track for his first time and he was leaping so high in the air he would have made a Lippanzaner jealous.
Michael Matz viewed the performance and afterwards asked if I was ok and I said "as long as I have my neck strap, I'm fine!".

Update 557: Another Fog article: Peaceful days and hope for Lost in the Fog (http://sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/chronicle/archive/2006/08/29/SPGFCKQQOH1.DTL), which include the following excerpts:
"If so, we're on the right track," Gilchrist said. "His last two days have been his best in two weeks."
and
"I wanted to take him back for the quality of life thing, but I also decided I'm just not going to give up on this horse," Gilchrist said after Lost in the Fog had walked around his barn's shedrow and had a bath. "Right now, I'm standing right in front of him and if you didn't know the situation, you wouldn't even know anything was wrong with him. He's a pretty happy horse right now, enjoying life pretty good. That doesn't mean he's cured; he's still a very sick animal. But we're doing all we can to get him well."
We will have a Fog vigil, wednesday evening, 7 PM. Whereever you are, whatever you are doing, spare some thoughts for Lost in the Fog. He will have an exam thursday to determine his progress.
I asked Graham Motion this morning how his horses are after this weekend's races at Saratoga. He said they all came back well. He has had seven winners at Saratoga so far for the meet, so not a bad meet.

Update 560: Just spoke to Kathy Anderson who visited Barbaro this afternoon. She reported Barbaro looked comfortable. Michael had also just left as Kathy was arriving.
For those of you interested in the anti slaughter campaign, a group is forming and becoming quite active, you can learn more on discussion boards: HR 503 Phone Campaign (http://forums.delphiforums.com/timwoolley/messages?msg=602.1). They are seeking support for a phone campaign. The vote is coming very soon (september 7).
Update 559: Ali, from Kennett Florist just left this comment (timestamp 8:41pm):
HELLO ALL
I returned from NBC about hour & half ago. I've been tiring to post ever since. Everyone I was in contact with, seemed up.
Very much excited about the NBC (UPENN) BARBARO FUND. Since Friday another $4196.00 has been donated in honor of Dr Richardson's birthday. That's big news.
I can't wait to hear what tomorrow is, since it's really Dr R's birthday. It was very busy they had a lot of appointments coming in. I was told things are good. Nothing gave me any impression of a problem. We delivered big cookies for every one at the main center. And of course carrots & horse treats for Bobby.
Next week NBC is having a big meeting with all staff not just the main building. They have never had anything serviced at this meeting. We are (KF) going to do coffee, tea, cream, sugar, cups. This will be for all 300 people. It's going to be an early morning for us.
We have a lunch in the works for next week. Not much else, for next week. This week is covered, except a basket for sat. If no one calls for it, we will use fund money.
WE BELIEVE!!!
Alie
Amazing generosity!
Update 558: Just spoke to Barclay (Tagg) to catch up with Funny Cide and Showing Up.
Funny Cide is targeted to run in the Woodward this weekend at Saratoga. He galloped a mile and a half today, which is his usual gallop in between breezes when he is training. Barclay said he likes to breeze him every six days, and he is scheduled for his final breeze tomorrow. Unfortunately the weather may not fully cooperate so the breeze is still up in the air, and if he does not breeze tomorrow he may breeze the next day, a shorter distance (these are typical issues a trainer faces coming up to a race). Either way, he will run. Funny Cide is training well and all is good.
Showing Up's next start looks like the Man of War at Belmont on September 9. That is their current preference, if not, they will look at the Sky Classic at Woodbine on September 24. Their goal is to prepare him for the Breeders Cup with one race beforehand.

Wednesday Morning~
Update 561: It seems to be becoming conventional wisdom now that this year's crop of three year olds is very strong. Those leading the crop include Barbaro, Bernadini, Showing Up, Discreet Cat and Henny Hughes, and that list does not include Jazil who won his last start: The Belmont! Anyway, the following are a couple of articles that highlight the leaders.
The first article: Current class of three-year-olds judged excellent (http://sport.monstersandcritics.com/horseracing/article_1195440.php/Current_class_of_three-year-olds_judged_excellent). The article begins:
The 2006 class of three-year-old thoroughbreds can now be rated as excellent. Bernardini's runaway victory in the Travers Stakes puts him at the top of his generation among active three- year-olds.
Imagine what type of rivalry there could have been if Barbaro had not suffered his career ending injury in the Preakness Stakes. Bernardini and Barbaro may have reminded racing fans of Affirmed and Alydar.
The second article: Rail Chatter (http://www.timescommunity.com/site/tab2.cfm?newsid=17125766&BRD=2553&PAG=461&dept_id=583968&rfi=6) takes a look at the "buzz" behind Discreet Cat. It does however also discuss Barclay Tagg, who is having a good Saratoga meet, excerpt:
My buddy Barclay Tagg is having a great meet at the Spa. He's been winning at about a 30 percent clip. He's taken a couple of stakes races already, and he has Funny Cide in the Woodward this Saturday. Kenny Mayne is the one, I think, who said about Barclay during the Triple Crown run of Funny Cide three years ago, "Here comes Barclay Tagg for an interview with as much anticipation as a man going to an IRS audit."
Yet Barclay has entered the psyche of the nation, as I saw on Saturday in a very unusual way. I went past a group with a baby in a seat. The mother was making it laugh - as parents do - by doing the old peek-a-boo thing. But instead of saying "Ah, boo!" she was saying, "Ah, Barclay. Barclay , Barclay!" The baby was laughing heartily. What can you say? Barc, you da man!
In the spring a leading contender for three year old honours was Brother Derek, he has been rested since his consecutive fourths in the Derby and the Preakness, he will be back for the second half of his three year old campaign on saturday: 'Derek' back and not forgotten (http://drf.com/news/article/78072.html). The following is an excerpt:
The exploits of Barbaro, Bernardini, Discreet Cat, Henny Hughes, and Showing Up have provided ample evidence that this crop of 3-year-olds is truly special. Brother Derek was at or near the top of that list earlier this year. With plenty of time to recover from the rigors of the first two legs of the Triple Crown, and with a series of strong works at Del Mar in the past month, Brother Derek appears set to launch his comeback on Saturday in the $100,000 El Cajon Stakes.
"We had a lot of fun with the Derby, the whole thing," Hendricks said at his barn. "It was fun to be part of the Kentucky Derby, which is the biggest race in the world.
"Cecil and I," Hendricks said, referring to owner Cecil Peacock, "tried to take it in and enjoy it, and not get caught up in the win-at-all-costs mentality, because that's devastating if you get beat. Now, it's on to Phase 2."
Thank you Tim!

Update 562: Just spoke to Michael Matz who said he hasn't heard anything yet this morning (wednesday). I wanted to make sure nobody worried that there is no early update today. Possibly I will get one closer to 9am during my short break time.
It's a cooler, rainy morning which actually makes it a pleasure to ride. The woodchip track at Fair Hill handles the rain well and thus the rain does not overly disrupt our training. And of course, we can always take the horses out back now that the rain has taken the sting out of the ground. For my third set, I'm about to get on Randy's Bullet and take him up Goat House Hill.
Finally, I'd like to thank those that contributed to my gift basket on Saturday and Michael said that there is another gift waiting for me in his tackroom this morning.

Update 654: Just spoke to Barclay Tagg. He did not breeze Funny Cide today, apparently the track was not suitable, they have had A LOT of rain in Saratoga. Funny Cide did a gallop today. They may give him a short breeze tomorrow, if the track is great, otherwise he will gallop into the Woodward on saturday. Barclay also noted Stormy Kiss came out of her race on sunday (third Ballerina) in good shape. I will catch up with Barclay again tomorrow.
Annie (Michael Matz exercise rider) rode Round Pond today, her first outing since her race on sunday (Molly Pitcher at Monmouth). She had a nice quiet trip outback (although Annie did mention a few deer) and does appear to have come out of her race well from the weekend.

Update 655: Jeannine Edwards just e-mailed me the following for their telecast on saturday.
We are televising the Woodward and Forego Handicaps on Sat, 4:30pm, espn2. Right now we are planning a Funny Cide feature, a look back at Forego (who won the Woodward 1974-77), an interview with Nick Zito (he has Commentator in the Forego and Sun King in the Woodward), a possible interview with Eugene Melnyk who owns Flower Alley, a tribute to the horsemen who died in the Lexington plane crash (one of whom was the breeder of Flower Alley), and of course, an update on Barbaro and most likely Lost In The Fog. This is our last show until Sept 30 when we will begin our "Countdown to the Cup" series before the Breeders' Cup. Those shows, (3 total, on Sept 30, Oct 7, and Oct 14) will be 2 hours long and will take place at Santa Anita, Belmont, and Keeneland. Each show will also have a cut-in from another track hosting big races on that day. These shows will highlight all the major horses in their final preps for the Breeders' Cup... they should be very exciting!!

Update 656: Sue McMullen sent me this e-mail this morning in reference to the Jackson's horse Enticing who recently ran at York.
I've just spoken to William Haggas, trainer of Enticing and asked him how she'd come out of the Nunthorpe, his thoughts on the race and where she goes next.
Willaim said she was absolutely fine and it had been an ambitious plan to go for the Nunthorpe, which on the day just didn't come off. He said she clearly wasn't happy on the ground and she was also up with the pace early on, which hadn't really been the plan so overall, it just didn't go right for her. But she has lots of speed and all being well, she will now go for the Flying Childers, at York on 8 September. This race normally takes place at Doncaster during the St Leger meeting, but Doncaster is currently closed for extensive rebuilding so the meeting has been transferred to York. The Flying Childers is a Group 2 over 5 furlongs, but her participation will depend on the ground as she won't run if it's soft.
I may have to pursuade Sue to become our European racing correspondent. Anyone want to volunteer for other racing jurisdictions around the world ?
Thanks, Alex!

Update 569: This morning we have two more articles that discuss the merits of this outstanding three year old crop. The first: THOROUGHBRED BEAT (http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/editorial/news/article.cgi?id=5502) showcases Bernardini, Barbaro, Lawyer Ron, Henny Hughes and Discreet Cat. The second: Bernardini towers over 3-year-old peers now (http://www.baltimoresun.com/sports/horseracing/bal-sp.eisenberg30aug30,0,6664359.column?track=rss) discusses Bernardini and Barbaro, and interviews the trainer of Sweetnorthernsaint (who was actually betting favourite of the Kentucky Derby) Mike Trombetta. A couple of excerpts:
"The only thing you can say with any certainty is both were bound for greatness," said Mike Trombetta, trainer of Sweetnorthernsaint, the Laurel-based gelding that finished seventh behind Barbaro in the Kentucky Derby and second behind Bernardini in the Preakness. "Everyone saw what Barbaro could do. And now everyone is seeing what Bernardini can do. It's hard to compare them. They're alike in that they both win. All the time. No matter what happens, they just keep winning."
and
"We'll obviously never know what would have happened if they had run against each other at their best," Trombetta said. "It's too bad. I know I would have loved to see it."
and
Trombetta hopes to run Sweetnorthernsaint for many years, but he harbors no illusions. Asked if he expected to run into Bernardini again, he just laughed.
"Not on purpose," he said.
Its a big day for Lost in the Fog, here is a lovely poem, by Gloria (updates 60 (http://www.timwoolleyracing.com/news/2006/08/barbaro_updates_55.php): timestamp 4:39 pm):
"In Our Hearts"
Lost in the Fog, such a mystical name,
For a magical horse who's achieved so much fame,
A sprinter who soars above mere mortal ground,
A champion who's proved that his talents abound.
Excitement and joy you have given us all,
And thankful we are that in your special stall,
Surrounded by comfort and care of your friends,
You can see all that love through your own special lens.
Your spirit is shining, to vanquish this foe,
And we will hold on until you say "let go."
We're with you, in this your most challenging race,
And praying that you will receive extra grace.
You're not "lost", but we're "searching" for ways to convey
How much you have shown us that words cannot say,
Please know that we value what sets you apart
For, Lost in the Fog, you've been "Found in our Hearts."

Update 571: Just spoke to Barclay Tagg to catch up with Funny Cide. Barclay said he galloped three times around the "Clare Court" track today. When I first heard that I thought Barclay was kidding with me, then he went on to explain it is a small training track at Saratoga, about 3/8ths / half mile round. Funny Cide relaxes more galloping on that track. I know he is a very strong horse to gallop, so I guess anything to help him relax. Anyway all remains well for saturday. The Daily Racing Form had this article: Team Funny Cide thrilled to be back (http://drf.com/news/article/78096.html) which noted the following:
There is a caveat to Funny Cide running in the Woodward. Trainer Barclay Tagg said he would not run if the track came up wet, and the weather forecast is iffy, based on the path of Tropical Storm Ernesto.
I asked Barclay about this and he confirmed that if the track came up really sloppy they would likely not run. Lets hope for better weather. The article also notes Funny's next objective, the Hawthorne Gold Cup, September 30.
Update 570: Another comfortable night for Barbaro last night (wednesday night). Michael Matz gave me the news as I was coming off the woodchip track on my first set. I was surprised to get the news so early so I hung around by the tunnel that goes under the dirt track so that MIchael could catch up and confirm that's what he had told me which he did. Just about to get on my second set which I presume will be Chappy who I think we are planning to breeze tomorrow.

Update 573: Jeannine Edwards has just spoken with Greg Gilchrist, Lost in the Fog's trainer. She sent me this e-mail:
Just spoke to Greg Gilchrist... Lost In The Fog is being examined and having his ultrasounds as I write this. They are scanning him to see if there has been any reduction at all in the size of the tumors. Greg seemed hopeful, albeit realistic, that there may be some options for Foggy. He said by this time next month... NEXT MONTH...they would have a better idea of whether or not Foggy is going to make it. That's a whole lot better than the "2 weeks to live" we heard 10 days ago. Greg said Foggy has gained some weight back, they are feeding him smaller meals 4 times a day, and when I asked what his daily routine is, Greg said "Whatever he feels like doing." They walk him, take him out for grass, take him near the track to watch training, give him baths, etc. He said right now the horse seems happy and perky, and because of the cancer treatment options available to humans, they are hopeful of being able to try something on Foggy. The problem is that cancer is very rare in equines, and so the treatment data is relatively
obscure. Perhaps Foggy will become the "poster horse" for successful cancer treatment. Greg said he will give me an update on the ultrasound findings tomorrow.
Racing this weekend is on ESPN at 4:30 pm, NOT ESPN2 as reported yesterday in update 565 (http://www.timwoolleyracing.com/news/2006/08/barbaro_updates_55.php#update565).

Update 576: Another comfortable night last night for Barbaro (thursday night). Just saw Michael Matz on my way to the woodchip track for my second set to breeze Chappy. Tim and I are breezing in company; Tim is on Who's Happy. Unfortunately, the dirt track is closed today due to the impending weather which makes for a little too exciting a time on the woodchip track with all the horses out there. I think Miraculous Miss might also be breezing today after the break.

Update 575: The Woodward, the marquee race for saturday, is currently an eleven horse field, headed by Flower Alley, last year's Travers winner. Funny Cide will be in post position 10 (assuming the track is not sloppy and he does run). Flower Alley on his game (http://drf.com/news/article/78158.html). Coverage is on ESPN, 4:30 pm.
On the three year old front, Brother Derek and Bob and John are both making their first starts back since the triple crown, against each other on saturday in Del Mar: Brother Derek back, faces Bob and John (http://drf.com/news/article/78153.html). An excerpt:
The bar has been raised high. Bernardini has parlayed his Preakness victory into wins in the Jim Dandy and Travers Stakes. Lawyer Ron came back last weekend to capture the St. Louis Derby. Discreet Cat romped last weekend at Saratoga. Showing Up took the Secretariat Stakes. Yes, many of the top 3-year-olds from the first half of the year have kept on motoring right through the summer.
Now it's time for two more familiar names to show if they are as good now as they were then. On Saturday at Del Mar, two of the spring's biggest stars make their comebacks, with the added intrigue of racing against one another.
We know Bluegrass Cat has now returned home: Bluegrass Cat finds home at stud farm (http://timesunion.com/AspStories/story.asp?storyID=512860&category=SPORTS&newsdate=8/31/2006), a decision whether to perform surgery has not yet been made, excerpt:
Pletcher said he is not sure what will happen now but he said WinStar, which owns the colt, was leaning toward not performing surgery on the leg.
Lost in the Fog's test results should be made available (to his connections) today, the results are to be compared with previous tests: Lost in the Fog undergoes tests (http://drf.com/news/article/78128.html):
Results of the detailed physical examination, which took an hour on Thursday afternoon, won't be known for 24 hours until blood work is analyzed and comparisons are made between the ultrasound examination with previous tests.
For those considering visiting Fair Hill this weekend, check the weather! You are still welcome to visit us, be at Parlo 1 at 8 am, but if there is wet weather it will not be as much fun, and there won't be too much activity.
Thanks, Alex & Tim!

Update 577: Just spoke to Barclay Tagg. Funny Cide had his final gallop before tomorrow's Woodward. He did the same as yesterday (on the "Clare Court" track, galloping three times around). He will go out for a quick jog tomorrow as the race is quite late in the afternoon (lets hope the weather cooperates).
Fair Hill's woodchip track was a busy place this morning. The dirt was closed and there was plenty of traffic for one track in anticipation of the pending weather coming in. Right after the break a few of the Fair Hill "Big Guns" were out to breeze. Miraculous Miss, under Ramon Dominguez went 5/8ths, I think in about 1:01. This may be her final stiff breeze before she starts back (she has not run since the Acorn). Also out breezing were the Graham Motion pair, Better Talk Now and Film Maker. They also went 5/8ths, nice and easy, in hand (I think). I believe that may be their first works since their Arlington trip a couple of weekends ago. I was also out breezing, with Tim, hence I could not really watch the aforementioned breezes too closely. I did see Miraculous Miss at the beginning of her breeze, she was coming by between the 3/8ths and half mile pole, as we were turning in. She looked like she was galloping along. Our breeze also went well, nice and in hand.

Update 578: Just spoke to Steve Willard, Giacomo's exercise rider. Giacomo had his first breeze today since his run in the Pacific Classic. As Steve said to me, he was feeling good and doing well so it was time to breeze him again. He breezed well, he went 5/8ths of a mile. He was blowing a little bit after the breeze (very normal) and cooled out well. Steve also noted that Giacomo's mental attitude is terrific after his last race. Steve was not yet sure what race they were pointing for next for Giacomo but great to hear he is doing well. Steve now gets a day off!

Update 581: Chemotherapy Next for Champ Lost in the Fog (http://news.bloodhorse.com/viewstory.asp?id=35139), some relevant excerpts:
Gilchrist, during a brief teleconference from Golden Gate Fields, said the hope is that chemotherapy can put the 4-year-old colt's lymphoma into remission and give the horse as much as two years of quality life.
"It would have to be a miracle for Lost in the Fog to be cured," Gilchrist said. "This is something that puts it into remission and allows him to go on."
and
"We've come to another cross in the road. They feel that we were doing isn't really helping that much," Gilchrist said. "He could have two, three, four months (to live) with what we are doing right now. There are always exceptions, of course, when you are dealing with something like this. But with chemotherapy it could be as much as two years."
and
In the meantime, Lost in the Fog "is in very good spirits," Gilchrist said, although he has lost a little weight because they haven't been feeding him as much as they did when he was in training. "His quality of life is good right now. If you just walked up to him, you wouldn't know there was anything wrong with him. I don't think he's being affected by anything going on around him or within him."
Update 580: Just spoke to Peter and he had just spoken to Michael, Barbaro continues to remain comfortable. Michael was over this afternoon and was pleased with Bobby.
Kennett Florist's Alie left this comment (timestamp: 9:05pm):
Hello All
I went to NBC before 9 this morning with bagels, coffee, juices, cream cheeses, ect. with a side of green tops. I went back alittle before
4 pm. With snacks for the next shift. And evening carotts & treats for ICU. I cannot tell the number of people who ask me to express how much They appreciate all you guys do. All seemed well. Everyone rushing around, before the storm starts. So far we have only had a little drizzle.
I will check in tomorrow. Rachel will be back Tuesday.
Have a great night.
God Bless.
We Believe!!!
From Kennett square & KF
And finally, we will have a vigil tomorrow, September 2, 7 pm east coast time. This will be for both Barbaro and Lost in the Fog. Whereever you are, whatever you are doing, spare some time for Bobby and The Fog.
Update 579: Lost in the Fog's condition unchanged (http://drf.com/news/article/78169.html) from the Daily Racing Form. Relevant excerpt:
"There's really not much to say. Everything is pretty much as it was," trainer Greg Gilchrist said from Del Mar on Friday. "Yesterday, we scanned the horse again, and, really, there's no change. Things are no better. Things are no worse. Everything's pretty much status quo."
Gilchrist said that he and Lost in the Fog's owner, Harry Aleo, would consult with veterinarians, "and we'll discuss our options."

Saturday Morning~
Update 582: Here is the assessment of Fog by UC Davis, and I assume this was published before the Bloodhorse (http://news.bloodhorse.com/viewstory.asp?id=35139) piece that indicated they were going to begin Chemotherapy: Lost in the Fog Update -- Sept. 1, 2006 (http://www.news.ucdavis.edu/search/news_detail.lasso?id=7852), relevant excerpt:
Lost in the Fog was very bright, alert, comfortable, eating well, and physically looked very good and in good spirits. He has not shown any signs of abdominal discomfort this week. The tumor in his spleen and the second tumor high in the abdomen between his kidneys and below his spinal column have not changed in size during the past two weeks, and no new tumors were detected in the spleen or liver or other abdominal or thoracic organs.
These findings indicate that the dexamathasone treatment has controlled the previously rapid growth of the tumors but has not caused them to shrink.
The location and size of the tumor high in the abdomen precludes the possibility that it can be removed surgically; however, chemotherapy remains an option, with the goal of inducing remission of the tumor masses.
The Thoroghbred Times also reports on Fog's current condition: Lost in the Fog to undergo chemotherapy treatments (http://www.thoroughbredtimes.com/todaysnews/newsview.asp?recno=66174&subsec=1).
It is a wet, blustery morning this morning. This will certainly make training more complicated. No doubt the dirt track will be shut again, but the wood chip track will be open, and I bet a few trainers will send a few horses out there. The barn shedrows will be the busy training spots today as most horsemen will jog / walk their horses around their respective shedrows. For salaried riders, days like today are obviously not a problem. For freelancers, we only get paid for what we ride, so today will not be profitable!
It may also be a little tricky to get the Barbaro update early this morning, its likely I will need to venture over to Michael Matz's barn, so I do anticipate a delay.

Update 583: Another comfortable night last night for Barbaro (friday night). As I suspected, I had to go to Michael's barn to get the update (he had heard from Dr. Richardson). There is not much training going on other than that done in each barn's respective shedrows. I shedrowed two for Tim, but was pretty glad to get out of there. I suspect Fair Hill might be a little busy tomorrow if the storm clears out. Michael also mentioned that Dr. Richardson is returning from his vacation today.

VB- thanks for the recap....I hope somethng goes right for LITG, can they do radiation? or at least operate on the spleen? That way the system would only have to work on one tumor not 2? I am so happy about Bobby now we just have to wait for the left rear hoof to grow in....he is an amazing horse!!!! Keep jingling from NY!

For those of us who have or know someone who has had chemo, "no growth" is very good news after only two weeks! :) Of course you hope that the tumors might shrink and possibly be removed, but having it not progress is a very big deal. "Stability" is definitely something to be clebrated, especially when he seems to have a very good quality of life!

Update 584: Spoke to Barclay Tagg (10 am) and Funny Cide was on his way over to the detention barn (I think they have to be there six hours before their race) in preparation for this afternoon's feature race, The Woodward. Funny Cide jogged this morning, a quiet bit of exercise. So far so good, there is no rain in Saratoga, yet. Barclay asked about the weather down here, I am not sure he was too thrilled with the answer (rain and wind).
I thought it was appropriate to highlight the efforts of those on this site wrt the anti horse-slaughter bill: OUR PROGRESS SO FAR... (http://forums.delphiforums.com/timwoolley/messages?msg=751.1). This is only one example of all the generosity (time and reesources) of those of you on this site.

Thanks to Alex: Update 585: Apparently we are not the only ones where bad weather is impacting racing (Philadelphia Park and Monmouth cancelled, hoping for a fast track for Funny in Saratoga), its a bog in England! Sue McMullen just sent me this e-mail about the feature race at Haydock Park today (Haydock Park Sprint comes down to two (http://drf.com/news/article/78105.html)):
The big sprint at Haydock was today and it was won by Reverence, who of course beat Enticing in the Nunthorpe. It was nice for the horse to win again as some felt he was lucky in the Nunthorpe as he had the ground in his favour. You couldn't even argue that he had his ground (soft) as it was pretty desperate in the north of England today. They were baling water off the course before the first and Thirsk was abandoned after three races. So it was heavy even for Reverence and would have tapped his stamina. I believe the time was 2.7 secs slower than standard, which is a lot for a six furlong race. All credit to Reverence for plugging his way through a bog.

Update 587: Peter just called (5:45 pm) and Barbaro remains comfortable, Michael had visited and spoke to Peter. Another good day. Peter is planning a visit tomorrow.
Don't forget, 7 pm vigil for Barbaro and Lost in the Fog. Whereever you are, whatever you are doing, spare some thoughts for Bobby and the Fog.
Update 586: Woodward odds and ends. Congratulations to Premium Tap and John Kimmel. John Kimmel used to have a string at Fair Hill, and along time ago I used to freelance for him. The result seems to highlight that the three year old division is the stronger division at this point and will likely yeild the horse of the year. I also see Corey Black has been added to the broadcast crew. He has had a pretty "interesting" racing career. Was a great apprentice jockey many years ago in California, was more recently agent for Gary Stevens (now retired), and then last year he came east with a jockey to be his agent. He would also gallop / breeze (I guess as part of his agent duties) and come over to Fair Hill a few days a week.

Brother Derek, off since back-to-back fourth-place finishes in the Kentucky Derby and Preakness (both gr. I) in May, did not have the easiest of returns for trainer Dan Hendricks. He was a step slow getting away from the gate and pulled jockey Alex Solis to the leaders while stuck four wide on the clubhouse turn. He continued to prompt the pace to the far turn but fell back while racing between horses as they came off the bend. He finished a tired fourth.

Update 589: With the Woodward now complete (Premium Tap springs $64 upset (http://drf.com/news/article/78241.html)) our racing focus will shift to Belmont next weekend where Showing Up will return to the races in the Man o' War: Man o' War is Showing Up's best option (http://drf.com/news/article/78213.html). This is the first of the three year old "big guns" taking on older horses (but not likely Fair Hill's Better talk Now who won it last year: Better Talk Now Unlikely to Defend Man o' War (http://racing.bloodhorse.com/viewstory.asp?id=35150)). Barclay mentioned to me a couple of days ago that Showing Up was likely to have his final breeze in preparation for the Man o' War on tuesday at Belmont. If Showing Up runs well in the Man o' War he will be on target for the Breeders Cup Turf.

Update 591: Just spoke to Barclay Tagg about Funny Cide. No real excuses, Funny appeared to come back from the race fine. Barclay is having the vet go over him thoroughly but nothing appears to be amiss. Showing Up is still scheduled for his final work in tuesday before the Man o' War, we will follow him into saturday's race.

Update 594: Bo Derek (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bo_Derek) was on ABC yesterday discussing the Anti Horse-Slaughter legislation: Perfect '10' Actress Rallies for Horses (http://abcnews.go.com/ThisWeek/Voices/story?id=2387465), she even makes reference to Barbaro in her short clip. The vote on this issue is scheduled for September 7, so this will be a busy week. The discussion boards (http://forums.delphiforums.com/timwoolley/start) are very active on this issue.
It looks more and more likely that Better Talk Now will be pointed for the Melbourne Cup: Better Talk Now pointed for Melbourne Cup (http://thoroughbredtimes.com/todaysnews/newsview.asp?recno=66192&subsec=2). I need to see if I can get a job with Graham! What a great adventure this would be. I witnessed Makybe Diva's (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Makybe_Diva) first Melbourne Cup (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Melbourne_Cup) victory, and having been to many races around the world, this was my most memorable racing experience.
It does beg the question, why don't US-based horses compete for the Melbourne Cup. A couple of reasons might include, timing (its the same week as the Breeders Cup (http://www.breederscup.com/bc_index.aspx)), and the distance of the race (its way too far for many of the horses in the US who are used to a mile and a half being an absolute marathon). Anyway, the Melbourne Cup is known as the race that stops a nation (it actually stops two nations when you include New Zealand). It is so refreshing to see how our sport really can be capture the imagination of countries in such a significant way, if only for a day.
We have been voted with a Yeah (http://www.members.aol.com/theflyingfilly/yeahs_and_neighs.htm) (I thought that was pretty cool)!
The Barbaro update this morning may be a little late, I am not sure. It is Labor Day (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Labor_Day), but this does not impact training horses, i.e. Fair Hill will be business as usual. That being said, it might be tough for me to get the update up until a little later. Thanks, Alex/Tim!

Update 595: Another comfortable night last night for Barbaro (sunday night). I saw Michael Matz as I was on my way to the woodchip track for my third set. He had heard from Dr. Richardson, who has now returned from his vacation.
Mondays are usually a little chaotic at the track, many horses have had the sunday off and are pretty "fresh". Given the weather we had saturday, quite a few horses will have had two days off. This monday did include a loose horse early on the woodchip track. I cannot name the rider, she said she would not speak to me again if I did, but all was well.
Barclay Tagg (who must be in town just for the day) caught the horse by the gap (it was not one of his). I asked Barclay again about Funny Cide, he said they had him thoroughly checked over and he seems fine.
I also caught up with Graham Motion, and asked him for a job. His immediate response "What happened ?" I then mentioned I just wanted to go with Better Talk Now to the Melbourne Cup. I tried to convince him that he really needs someone on his team with Melbourne Cup experience (I know where the closest bar to the paddock is located etc.) He smiled. It seems they will make a decision in the next couple of days about running, there are a few things they need to sort through before a decision to run can be made. It will certainly be a very sporting venture if they do go.

Update 596: Returning to Fair Hill, I had three more to ride after the break. Two of which were nicely uneventful, one of which was intent to try to remove me from the saddle (rearing, leaping and lunging). Fortunately luck prevailed, although I had to apologise for some colourful language. Tim breezed Red Aspen and Gator Nation after the break on the woodchips. Tim was on Red Aspen and Jesus Bracho (Fair Hill's resident jockey) was on Gator Nation. The 5/8ths breeze seemed to go well for all concerned.
Perhaps slightly off topic (perhaps not), but it seems the animal world lost a real hero and advocate, Steve Irwin: A Huge Loss to the Animal World (http://forums.delphiforums.com/timwoolley/messages?msg=808.1). Dan Hendricks is pointing the blame for Brother Derek's fourth last weekend squarely on his own shoulders: Hendricks: Derek wasn't quite fit (http://drf.com/news/article/78316.html). I guess I can see what he means. When a horse breezes so easily it means they have obvious talent, but if they are not being pushed then they are not always getting too much out of those breezes. Also, I have now added a link to the site's FAQ (http://www.timwoolleyracing.com/news/2006/08/frequently_aske.php) to the left.

Update 601: New Bolton's release: Barbaro continues to do well:
Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro continues to please veterinarians with his progress after his most recent right hind leg cast change last week. "Barbaro is wearing the new cast satisfactorily," said Dr. Dean W. Richardson, Chief of Surgery. "We continue to monitor him closely, and depending on how he progresses, we may change it again within the next two weeks."
The colt's left hind foot, which has laminitis, continues to improve gradually, according to Dr. Richardson. The bandage on this foot is changed daily.
"Barbaro's appetite is great, and we take him out each day to hand graze him," said Dr. Richardson. "His vital signs remain normal, and he seems very happy."
Barbaro is in the Intensive Care Unit of the University of Pennsylvania's George D. Widener Hospital, where he is recovering from injuries suffered at the Preakness on May 20.
The next update will be posted on Tuesday, September 12 unless there is a significant change in Barbaro's condition.
Update 600: Just spoke to Barclay Tagg, he worked Showing Up this morning as scheduled, on the inner turf, no dogs (i.e. on the rail). He went in 1:01.1 and was very pleased with the work. This will be his last work before the Man o' War on saturday.

So glad to be back today!! There was so much to catch up with that I never got a chance to post until late tonight. It was so nice to be back at NBC today. (Good grief, what will I do when Barbaro goes home?) We welcomed everyone back from their long weekend with pizza and salad for lunch. Everyone expressed their gratitude for your kindness. We brought up a big basket of carrots and pears for the big guy! I can imagine he was wondering where his usual daily delivery of green tops was... "OK, I get that they don't deliver on Sundays, but what's with this long weekend thing?" All kidding aside, when I asked about Barbaro, I was told that he had a really good weekend.
Alie went back up later with a special delivery for a special friend, some apples, carrots and treats for the blood donor horses, and some other treats for the two legged beasts. I got to make a trip to Fair Hill, with goodies for Michael Matz, Peter, Alex, Tim and Dr Anderson.
Again, thank you all for everything you do... the candles, prayers, tributes, poems, jokes, etc. It truly is nice to be HOME!

Bluegrass Cat is adapting to his new life on a farm: Bluegrass Cat adapts to life off the track (http://www.macon.com/mld/macon/sports/horse_racing/15429955.htm), relevant excerpt:
The son of Storm Cat (the Kentucky Derby runner-up and winner of $1.8 million) was happily bedded down in his new home, munching hay, when I paid a visit this past week.
He turned to the door and seemed happy to see people. No doubt the transition from Todd Pletcher's busy racing stable to being the only horse inside the barn during the day has taken some adjusting on Bluegrass Cat's part.
He'll get 30 days in the stall while healing begins on the non-displaced fracture of his right hind pastern. He will not need surgery.
After the stall rest will come 30 days of walking for exercise. For now, he's wearing a thick bandage wrapped around his leg to protect the fracture.
Finally one day to go for the anti horse-slaughter bill. We will have a vigil tonight, 7 pm (east coast time) for the passing of the bill.

That each will hear this message and will clearly understand.
To some, it may be humble prayer for those who can not pray
To others, a voice of wisdom that can end unspoken pain.
Each and every person bears a gift to stop this crime
All were born and living just to be here at this time.
It doesn't matter who you are or where you've stood before
An open heart is all you need to close this fateful door.
Time is of the essence lest another thousand fall
In excruciating slaughter, born of greed and hidden gall.
Captive bolt and bleeding while the others watch in fear
Sold for wealthy foreign appetites, when will Our Country hear?
America's companion who has carried her so far
Across the plains in covered wagons, homestead bound, to farm.
Express mail was a pony, through rain, through sleet, through snow
Throughout this nation's history are hoof prints leading home.
The cowboy's friend and livelyhood, his song beneath the stars
All the pretty horses prance through childhood dreams and hearts.
The bloodhorse is bred and trained to bear our triple crown
An artist gift is born where mare and foal are bedded down.
Please let these words and images move each of us to stand!
It is our duty and our right as stewards in this Land.
Call and write your congressmen on HR503
Let the USA shine proud again from sea to shining sea.

Thanks for the updates VB. I cry every time I see the shots of Barbaro at the Preakness!  Then I rejoice when I see pics of him with Edgar and Michael and the rest of the recovering pictures. :) :)
OK folks, the candles are REALLY low - 865. Time to light quite a few!
The bloody board is so slow lately( :sigh: ) I can't always make it in 3 times/day to check. Wasn't able to make it in last night so I'm glad to see he's doing well. :)

Just for so, is there any way to split this thread archivally? At currently 110 pages, and the huge view count, this is putting quite a load on the server. As often as not, I time out, so I'm presuming the software has to serially process all the previous messages in the thread to get to the last page (hmm... I'm used to a DBMS that supports a reverse-read, but I don't think SQL allows that).
Sorry for the tech interjection, but it might lessen the server load and speed response for everyone.

I really don't want this thread split. I made a committment to Barbaro and the COTH community to do this, and I want to see it through until he is out of the hospital. It's that important to me, and to all of you.
Thank you, everyone of you, for making a difference in this wonderful horse's life.

Update 606: Still no morning report for Barbaro. I spoke to Barclay Tagg to get updates on Showing Up and Funny Cide. Showing up shedrowed today, which is very typical the day after a work. They all remain pleased with him going into the Man o' War on saturday. Funny Cide did his first bit of exercise since the Woodward on saturday. He jogged a mile. He felt good, the rider was very happy with the way he was moving, so at this stage he does not appear to have suffered any ill effects from his Woodward race.

Update 609: A report from Kennett Florist (timestamp: 6:36pm):
Afternoon Everyone,
All is quiet this afternoon. The town hall meeting that was scheduled for this morning that we were going to bring treats for was postponed. We did bring some treats for the staff and our beloved boy. I'm still a little gun shy around those darn green tops. The stitches come out today!! LOL
The carrots were heading right up to Barbaro.
Anyway, also wanted to let you know we're planning a trip to Elkton, MD next Tuesday, September 12. It's just an FYI. Thanks again for all your calls and emails!
WE BELIEVE!!
Martine posted in the comments a conversation she had with the Fog's owner (timestamp 9:10 pm):
I had a nice conversation yesterday with Lost in the Fog's owner, Harry Aleo. Mr. Aleo is a very sweet man who took time -- at a time when things are obviously quite hectic -- to talk about the Fog and what a fighter is! Mr. Aleo was gracious and touched by the interest of others in LITF. Great guy, great horse. Best wishes to both of them!
Anyone that reads the comments below today can be nothing but impressed with everyones efforts for tomorrow's vote. Amazing. Vigil tonight, 7pm, east coast time.

He let me know that for the next few days he'll have to provide me evening reports from his visit with Barbaro the night before as Dr. Richardson is away at a seminar for a few days. Michael's evening report from last night (tuesday) is that Bobby was comfortable and all remains well. He visited about 8pm.
For whatever reason, I forgot one of my gloves this morning...my left hand glove. This is the hand that holds on to everything (neck strap, mane, and reins). So this might be a problem! But we survived the first set intact. And now about to get on Chappy. I will endeavour to post a report on Barbaro later today as I am able.

Update 604: Kennett Florist's report of their NBC visit yesterday (timestamp 1:03pm (http://www.timwoolleyracing.com/news/2006/09/barbaro_updates_61.php)):
So glad to be back today!! There was so much to catch up with that I never got a chance to post until late tonight. It was so nice to be back at NBC today. (Good grief, what will I do when Barbaro goes home?) We welcomed everyone back from their long weekend with pizza and salad for lunch. Everyone expressed their gratitude for your kindness. We brought up a big basket of carrots and pears for the big guy! I can imagine he was wondering where his usual daily delivery of green tops was... "OK, I get that they don't deliver on Sundays, but what's with this long weekend thing?" All kidding aside, when I asked about Barbaro, Iwas told that he had a really good weekend.
WE BELIEVE!!
Having bolted out of Fair Hill early yesterday (drenched) I am now excited to return!
Miraculous Miss is back in the entries, 11th race at Delaware Park on saturday (http://www.drf.com/entries/09/eDEL09.html?rn=038325#11). It has been a long road to get her back after the Acorn gate incident. I will be going over to Delaware Park, it is a great days racing altogether saturday.
A list has been compiled of those not on board with the bill: List of Reps that are NOT for the bill (http://forums.delphiforums.com/timwoolley/messages?msg=846). And we have this lovely poem: My Poem and Plea for HR503 (http://forums.delphiforums.com/timwoolley/messages?msg=817):

Thursday Morning:
Update 611: Michael Matz visited Barbaro last evening and he said all was well. I saw him first set on the dirt track. It was a stunning sunrise this morning with a layer of mist coming up out of the ground. Just finished galloping Chappy for my second set and hoping for a nice uneventful morning.
updated thursday 7:05am
Update 610: Ray Paulick, editor-in-chief of the Bloodhorse makes end of year predictions: Locks (http://opinions.bloodhorse.com/viewstory.asp?id=35205) which include this one we can all agree to:
Equine surgeon Dean Richardson and the staff at the University of Pennsylvania's New Bolton Center will win the 2006 Eclipse Award of Merit. No one is more deserving than Richardson and his team at New Bolton. The work done in the hours and days following Barbaro's devastating injury in the Preakness was remarkable from a veterinary medicine standpoint. Their decision (and that of owners Roy and Gretchen Jackson) to provide frequent updates (including photographs and video) on Barbaro's recovery, despite the very real possibility that the colt could die, allowed millions of people who might have given up on horse racing because of the injury to stay connected with the sport.
Another article from the Thoroughbred Times discusses the transparency of Barbaro's condition and its effect: Focus on fracture repair (http://www.thoroughbredtimes.com/horsehealth/hhview.asp?recno=66319&subsec). The article begins:
THE UNPRECEDENTED media coverage of Kentucky Derby (G1) winner Barbaro's injury, surgical repair, and recovery at the University of Pennsylvania's New Bolton Center has turned casual horse enthusiasts into quasi-medical interns. Countless numbers of people have downloaded the images of Barbaro's fractured leg and its repair, and they have followed the daily media updates through cast changes, implant removal and replacement, laminitis, and suspected osteomyelitis (bone infection).
At each step of the way, ordinary people--carpenters, secretaries, truck drivers, and cooks--have been exposed to the methods used to repair equine fractures and the medical care necessary following such procedures. They have followed Barbaro's assisted recovery in New Bolton's surgical recovery tank, read about the titanium plate and screws in his injured limb, and seen pictures of him standing in a supportive sling.
and ends:
It is too early to be sure about Barbaro's legacy. As the Kentucky Derby winner continues to battle complications associated with repair of his right hind leg, it is premature to speculate how Barbaro will be viewed in years to come. Will he be thought of as a gifted athlete that excited and thrilled the world of horse racing? Will he be remembered for his ability in the breeding shed? Will he be forever linked to his struggle to recover from a devastating injury? One thing is certain so far: Barbaro may well be best remembered for providing the public with an education in the advances and possibilities available through veterinary medicine.
Congratulations to everyone for all your hard work yesterday on the anti horse-slaughter bill. A quick reminder, the morning report will actually be a report from Michael's visit yesterday evening.

Sounds like a nice quiet day before his big race tomorrow. Showing Up is the first of the three year old "big guns" to take on older horses, in the Man o' War. Good luck to Barclay and the Jacksons. Here is the Daily Racing Form's review of the race: Showing Up faces hotter competition (http://drf.com/news/article/78461.html), excerpt:
Having easily handled 3-year-olds in two turf stakes, Showing Up will face older horses for the first time in Saturday's Grade 1, $500,000 Man o' War Stakes at Belmont Park. He will face Grade 1 winners Cacique, Relaxed Gesture, and Go Deputy in the Man o' War, run at 1 3/8 miles on the inner turf course.
I asked Barclay if Showing Up will train tomorrow before the race. , He said he would likely jog a little.
Peter is heading over to visit Barbaro early afternoon. He is taking Eduardo with him, so this will be Eduardo's first visit in quite a while. I'll get an update later from Peter. Eduardo was very grateful for the gift basket I forwarded to him, very grateful.

They did not take him out to graze as Michael had done this this morning, straight after Fair Hill, and on his way to Keenland (sales next week I think). Eduardo groomed Barbaro. Its a short report but a good visit for all.

All was quiet with NBC when Alie went up yesterday afternoon. The reports we get are the same as Alex. Barbaro continues to be doing well. We brought his majesty some green tops and pears and had a nice basket for the blood donor horses.
We are in the process of throwing together a birthday party/surprise for Mike Rea! His birthday is next Tuesday (September 12) and we're hoping to surprise the heck out of him! I've talked to his sister Nancy to make sure what gifts, treats, etc we get are things that he will enjoy. Delaware Park has "owners day", which basically means the purses go up, they get a good card and offer some great food for those with the right tickets (this year I will get one)! The racing should be great. From Fair Hill we have Miraculous Miss making her long anticipated return, and she has been looking good in her recent works. Diabolical is also entered in the Kent for Steve Klesaris, he has done well since the Preakness. Michael Matz has plenty of runners (Peter will have a busy day), and I will have some great food! Tim has a couple of runners at Laurel, Randy's Bullet and Gator Nation, so I will have to keep an eye on those on the simulcast. I will also of course be following Showing Up's exploits at Belmont.
In europe there are two races of interest, the St Leger (third leg of their equivalent of the triple crown) and the Irish Champion Stakes. This is covered by the Daily Racing Form: Ouija Board-'Alexander' rematch (http://drf.com/news/article/78456.html), and below by our friend Sue McMullen:
plus we've got the Irish Champion Stakes this weekend. This, as you probably know, is ALWAYS one of the best races of the season. We've seen some magnificent battles over the years between the very best horses and this year's will be no exception. A mouth-watering clash between two of the best mares in the world, Ouija Board and Alexander Goldrun, and the young pretender Dylan Thomas, who is joint favourite with Ouija Board. If Dylan were to win, he would have to overturn the trend of this season and win a Group One against his elders.
Winner of the Irish Derby by an impressive three-and-a-half lengths, Dylan Thomas will be at the mercy of the two wonderful mares who fought out a thrilling finish to the Group One Vodafone Nassau Stakes at Goodwood in one of the best Flat races this season. On that occasion the globe-trotting Oujia Board prevailed by a short-head over Alexander Goldrun, both mares fighting to the line, and should she win again it will take her tally of Group Ones to a magnificent seven.

Update 622: Lost in the Fog received his first chemotherapy treatment at 11:30 am, thursday. He is now back in his familiar barn at Golden Gate Fields. Here is a detailed report of the treatment from UC Davis: Lost in the Fog: Chemo Begins (http://www.vetmed.ucdavis.edu/whatsnew/article.cfm?id=1644). It includes the following excerpts:
Lost In The Fog tolerated the treatment extremely well and remained comfortable throughout. He remained bright and alert overnight, maintained a normal temperature, and had an excellent appetite and attitude.
Lost In The Fog was released from the teaching hospital at 11:45 AM Friday, September 8, into the care of his trainer, Mr. Greg Gilchrist, and his veterinarian, Dr. Don Smith, who will monitor the horse closely at Golden Gate Fields. Dr. Smith will collect blood at regular intervals to monitor the effects of the first round of chemotherapy.
Subsequent chemotherapy treatments will be scheduled based on the results of these blood tests and on Lost In The Fog's progress.
and
Lost In The Fog was a model patient while hospitalized at the VMTH and behaved very well. He will, no doubt, enjoy his return to the familiar environment and faces in Mr. Gilchrist's barn at Golden Gate Fields.
The dedicated veterinarians and staff who have provided Lost In The Fog with round-the-clock care during his visits to the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital are rooting for him. We sincerely appreciate the messages of support and encouragement that have poured in from Lost In The Fog's many fans and admirers around the globe.
The article includes a nice headshot of the Fog and also provides an e-mail address you can use to send your wishes: fogfans@ucdavis.edu (fogfans@ucdavis.edu).
The Barbaro update will likely be delayed today, As indicated earlier yesterday, (just an FYI), as a few people are away and we might not learn anything until this afternoon.
Thank you Tim & Alex!

Update 623: I just spoke to Peter Brette. He is planning to visit Barbaro after morning work, and on his way to Delaware Park (where he will be busy saddling plenty of runners this afternoon). I will get an update from Peter after his visit, hopefully by early afternoon.
While there is still no confirmation on whether Better Talk Now will run in the Melbourne Cup, I think it is quite likely. A race has been recently named after the three time winner Makybe Diva: Craiglee Stakes renamed for three-time Melbourne Cup winner Makybe Diva (http://thoroughbredtimes.com/todaysnews/newsview.asp?recno=66316&subsec=3). Makybe Diva herself has been retired to the breeding shed. Here is part of an e-mail I received about her first mating from Susan Senior:
Well the "deed" has been done between the Diva and Gallileo. Bloodstock breeding experts call it a "match made in heaven".
Some trivia and good for a smile - The Diva had her favourite song (I'ts only the beginning) played during her mating and the Barn was decorated in her racing colours of red, white and blue!!! This is the absolute truth! One respected and revered trainer George Hanlon is quoted as saying quite seriously "Horses are only human".
It made me smile!
It is sad to report Electrocutionist - suffered suspected heart attack (http://www.sportinglife.com/racing/news/story_get.cgi?STORY_NAME=racing/06/09/09/RACING_Electrocutionist.html). He had recently run second to Ouija Board who is running today, in his penultimate start.

Update 624: Just spoke to Peter who was just finishing up his visit with Barbaro (noontime). He said Barbaro was well, and again, Peter was pretty upbeat. He is now off to Delaware Park, as am I.
I also caught up with Kim, Peter's wife. She let me know that Barbaro's baby brother has now been weaned. No new pictures yet, but we are hoping for some.

Update 628: It is Mike Rea's birthday on tuesday: Please Don't Forget Mike Rea's Birthday! (http://forums.delphiforums.com/timwoolley/messages?msg=1009.1)
Update 627: Tim called back and Randy's Bullet appeared to be cooling out in good order.
Update 626: Just spoke to Tim. Randy's Bullet broke his maiden at Laurel, was produced with great timing to win the race. Tim is now on his way back to the receiving barn to see him. He believes all is well, and will call back in 30 minutes with an update. Gator Nation was put on the front end, and for a second start it was a tough thing to do, he ran a little green down the lane.
Miraculous Miss, how fantastic was it to see her return with a win. She spotted the field a few lengths but came with a sweeping run and it was just great to see. She looked great in the paddock, very cool and calm. Clearly no ill effects from her Acorn experience. I saw Steve Klesaris directly after the race and congratulated him, he was pretty excited. Lil, his wife and assistant, was walking her back after the race and she just looked completely elated. Very cool! As far as the rest of Delaware, both Graham Motion and Michael Matz had winners also, so a decent day for Fair Hill, Ramon Dominguez cleaned up!
Showing Up seemed to run well in the Man o' War, he looked like he was trying to bite another horse early in the race. He was a little keen down the backside and I think that may have been his undoing. Anyway, a good performance for a 3yo facing older horses on the turf for the first time. I imagine the turf was a little yielding. I'll call Barclay in the next day or so to see how he came out of the race. It seems Barclay had a nice winner earlier on the card.
I received the following e-mail from Sue McMullen reporting on the top European racing today:
A feast of racing today for racegoers at York and Leopardstown. First York, where the St Leger was relocated from Doncaster while the latter is closed for rebuilding. There's an old saying that the fastest horse wins the Guineas, the luckiest horse wins the Epsom Derby and the best horse wins the St Leger and Sixties Icon, under a confident ride by Frankie Dettori, underlined this piece of racing folklore. Described as the 'easiest Classic he's ever won' and his fourth St Leger, Frankie had little to fear from anything else in the race and when he asked the favourite to quicken, Sixties Icon proved he was the class horse of the race and cruised effortlessly to the front, never in danger of being headed. Trainer Jeremy Noseda, winning his first British Classic, couldn't be there to savour victory as he is currently at the Keeneland sales so anybody reading this from the sales who saw a mad Brit leaping up and down watching a monitor, it was probably him. Sixties Icon is described by his groom Sean as 'a show off, just like Frankie!' It was a refreshing change to see some credit go to his regular work rider, Mick Deniro (I'm sure Alex will appreciate this!) as the jockeys tend to get all the glory when so much of the daily work at home goes unmentioned.
Meanwhile at Leopardstown yet another thrilling finish to the Irish Champion Stakes, which never fails to light up the season. The toughest mares in training, Ouija Board and Alexander Goldrun were taken on by Dylan Thomas, winner of the Irish Derby. An imposing individual, representing Ballydoyle and ridden by Kieren Fallon, Dylan locked horns with Ouija in the home stretch and at one point Lord Derby's tough-as-teak mare headed the Aiden O'Brien colt. But Dylan lengthened his stride (memories of our Bobby here) and fought back. So it was not Ouija's day but she gave him a real fight, battling her heart out to the wire with the game Alexander Goldrun, who was forced to challenge wide, in third.
This seems to be a day for the old sayings and another one is 'don't get beaten by one you've past' so Jamie Spencer might well have an attack of 'if only' as it could be said that he went too soon and ruined Ouija's chances. But you can't take anything away from the winner, who had the services of one of the world's best pilots, and the gallant mare lost nothing in defeat. Lord Derby, or 'Teddy' as he is known to his friends, has enjoyed the most incredible rollercoaster ride over the last few years and he is desperately proud of Ouija Board and all she has accomplished around the world, as indicated by this comment to RTE sport. "She has run a brave race and it was no disgrace being beaten by an Irish Derby winner to whom she was giving 4lb. She's a truly loyal horse and always tries her best."
Following victory in what is regarded as a seriously prestigious race in the global racing calendar, Dylan Thomas will be aimed at the Breeders' Cup, in either the Turf or the Classic.
It was also good to see Kieren in the familiar dark blue colours of his employers and regardless of the accusations made against him, there are many in the UK who believe a man is innocent until proven guilty and were outraged that he was suspended from riding while awaiting trial.
Note: Kieren Fallon is currently suspended in England from riding, and will not be riding in the Breeders' Cup.
Update 625: Before I report on racing today I wanted to give you an update on Lost in the Fog I just received from the press office at Golden Gate Fields (Tom Ferrall):
Lost in the Fog was resting in his stall at Golden Gate Fields Saturday, two days after receiving his first chemotherapy treatment at UC Davis.
The champion sprinter of 2005 had the chemotherapy treatment Thursday and was able to return home to Golden Gate Fields Friday afternoon.
"I think it (the treatment) affected him a little bit, but he's eating and he's drinking," reported trainer Greg Gilchrist Saturday. "He seems a little tired, but that’s to be expected. I think he'll snap out of it."
Gilchrist said Lost in the Fog, who was diagnosed with three cancerous tumors last month, will have his next chemotherapy treatment "Sept. 27 or Sept. 28."
Gilchrist said he thanks everyone for the tremendous support that he, owner Harry J. Aleo and Lost in the Fog have received.
Lost in the Fog vigil, tonight, 7 pm, whereever you are, whatever you are doing, spare some thoughts for the Fog.
Thanks, Alex...........

Sunday Morning:
Update 629: Peter is planning to visit Barbaro around lunchtime today, after morning work in the barn, so I will catch up with him and get a report later (early afternoon I hope).
You have made the paper: Barbaro's superfans (http://www.dailylocal.com/site/news.cfm?newsid=17175026&BRD=1671&PAG=461&dept_id=17782&rfi=6). This is the article Kennett Florist refered to a couple of days ago in the local paper, I guess it has now only just gone online.
It is a georgeous morning again at Fair Hill. I did not have anything to ride but went to Tim's to see how Randy's Bullet and Gator Nation came out of their respective races yesterday at Laurel. They arrived back in the barn about 9:30 pm last night. Both looked well this morning. I saw Randy's Bullet shedrowing and then being led out for a pick of grass. He looked fine. Tim is now heading up to Monmouth to run Red Aspen in the sixth race (http://www.drf.com/entries/10/eMTH10.html?rn=265346#6).
Thank you Alex~

Update 631: Peter visited Barbaro about lunchtime today and all remains well. He received a massage this morning too (Barbaro, not Peter!).
Sue McMullen sent me this e-mail reviewing racing in France today:
The three trials for the Prix de L'Arc de Triomphe were held at Longchamp today. The Prix Foy was won by Shirocco, ridden by Christophe Soumillon, who beat his stable mate Hurricane Run, ridden by Kieren Fallon. But you can't read too much into this as it was run at a pedestrian pace with the Arc contenders aware that the race is only a few weeks away. Fallon said Hurricane Run doesn't like small fields and tends to raise his game when the stakes are high, as we saw in the King George at Ascot. Shirocco is unbeaten this year and goes for the Arc then the Breeders Cup again, but this time he might go for the Classic. I wouldn't necessarily read too much into the form of this race as none of the Arc principals were going to be asked to do too much. It gave the two main Arc contenders, first and second in the betting, a nice workout.
The Prix Niel was won by another Andre Fabre trained horse, Rail Link, with Soumillon notching another victory, who beat Youmzain in a strong drive to the line.
The Prix Vermeille, for fillies and mares, was won by Mandesha, piloted by, guess who, Christophe Soumillon, who is owned by the Aga Khan's daughter Princess Zahra. Mandesha looked very impressive and she may be supplemented for the Arc, when her connections, including trainer Alain de Royer-Dupre have an opportunity to examine the timings.
Andre Fabre trains three of the first four in the betting for the Arc, Hurricane Run, then Shirocco, and third favourite Deep Impact, Japan's top horse, with Rail Link in fourth.
As usual, it will be some race.
The sportinglife adds a report: SHIROCCO CLAIMS HURRICANE SCALP (http://www.sportinglife.com/racing/news/story_get.cgi?STORY_NAME=racing/06/09/10/RACING_Longchamp.html). The Arc de Triomphe is the principal race for older horses in europe in the fall.
Update 630: Wendy offers a nice report on her visit with Lost in the Fog yesterday (saturday), its on the discussion boards: My Visit with Fog (http://forums.delphiforums.com/timwoolley/messages?msg=1024.1). It includes the following excerpt:
I walked back to Greg's barn and met him in his office. I introduced myself and we chatted for a short while. I had printed off the posts from yesterday morning so he could get an understanding of the website and what people have been posting. He pointed to the wall behind me and said, "Look! This is what I have received just today! There's so much that I have been sharing it with others." Then he said, "C'mon, let's go see the guy."

Update 632: A nice interview by the Bloodhorse with Gretchen Jackson (today at Keeneland): Gretchen Jackson: It's Still Day to Day, But Barbaro 'Starting to Blossom' (http://news.bloodhorse.com/viewstory.asp?id=35269), it includes the following two quotes:
"You're naturally guarded. But for a not medically-educated person such as me, in the last month since his crisis with laminitis, he seems to have gone so much in the right direction. He seems to use all four legs better to equal his weight, to spread his weight amongst four legs, to stand more. And he has never ceased from eating up a storm. Arms and legs included. He would like to grab your arm or leg or hand. He just is doing it all remarkably well. He's just phenomenal.
and
"Yes, it's day to day. I never have asked Dean (Richardson) when is he going to get out of here. I have never asked him. Maybe Dean doesn't either. It (Barbaro's recovery) doesn't seem to have gone back. We haven't had a crisis since the laminitis. His coat is shiny. He lost a lot of his tail. Did you know that? (It's from) balancing him coming out from operations; I don't know if its hands on him or what. But he lost a lot of his tail. But that's all coming back. Everything is just starting to blossom, and you want to see light at the end of the tunnel. We haven't had Dean say there is light is at the end of the tunnel."
