Update 1812: I believe a great article on Edgar Prado: THE ECSTACY AND AGONY OF EDGAR PRADO (http://www.louisville.com/loumag/articledisplay.aspx?id=57044949). To be honest this is the first time I have posted an article without reading it first, which is a sign of the frenetic pace I am operating at this point (teaching at 1:25 pm; HRTV live telephone interview at 1pm).

Excellent article on Edgar. :)

I was just over lighting another candle - there are over 1600 candles lit for Barbaro from 8 different countries. :)

Michael Matz has decided not to enter Chelokee in the Kentucky Derby: No Derby Repeat for Matz; Chelokee to Return to Maryland (http://tcm.bloodhorse.com/viewstory.asp?id=38639), excerpt:

"I think we've basically kind of giving up running in the Derby," said Matz. "As much as I'd like to go, I don't think he's going to be the way I came into the Derby [with Barbaro] last year."
Matz said he would feel more comfortable about Chelokee with a little more time, so he and Centennial Farm have decided to head home and look at a possible bid for the May 19 Preakness (gr. I), the second jewel of racing's Triple Crown.
"If it was two more weeks or three more weeks, I would say I could probably give it a shot," said Matz. "He went awfully good today and I think I have everything solved, but I think I'm just kind of like a week away. A lot of those horses -- Barclay's horse (Barclay Tagg's Nobiz Like Shobiz), Carl's horse (Carl Nafzger's Street Sense), and Curlin, they're just doing so well right now. That's the way you want to go into a race."

Update 1813: Here is the video of the Today Show this morning with Mr. Mrs. Jackson and Dr. Richardson. It starts with clips of NBCs documentary and then turns to the interview. Mr. Jackson mentions this site: LIVE FROM STUDIO 1A: BARBARO REMEMBERED (http://allday.msnbc.msn.com/archive/2007/04/27/171661.aspx)

That article is written by my friend Claire - she has just been hired full time by bloodhorse (you can read her article on Todd Pletcher on their website), and I spoke with her today as she is doing an article on yours truely!

:-)

She is a great girl, and will go far in racing.

****BIG CORRECTION****

Sunday am at Fair Hill Training Center, is now at 8:45 am. NOT 9.

For those not familiar with the area, go to google maps and enter this address:

10 Training Center Dr. Elkton, MD 21921

http://www.google.com/maps?q=10+Training+Center+Dr,+Elkton,+Maryland+219 21,+USA&sa=X&oi=map&ct=title

This gets you to the field where guests will be parking.

COMFY shoes are a must because there will be lots of hiking!!!

I'll be there complete with a bull horn giving the "crowd" info about Tim's horses that are breezing for their owners.

WOW HLAS seems like you have SUUUCCCCHHHH an amazing life, but Hotwalking? wasnt it a few weeks ago you were driving carriage's downtown in some city? along with being at Harvard and playing polo? And then visiting "the best" KY racing/breeding farms, and being buddy buddy with the top trainers....Did you make your trip out to KY on spring break or what? Just seems like whatever is going on your right in the middle of and are going to get press coverage for...

Yes I was in KY for Spring Break - post a lot about it here.

I practiced my hot walking at Palm Meadows in January solely to prepare to hot walk for the Derby - unfortunately the horse I was going to hot walk did not make the cut!

Bidding for the auction items tonight has already been swift, and if this is any indication of tonight's activity we should be able to raise a lot of money for TCA (http://www.thoroughbredcharities.org/) and Laminitis Research at New Bolton (http://www.vet.upenn.edu/giving/fight_laminitis/). The item with the current highest bid is the signed Kentucky Derby win picture!

Off to Fair Hill for event number two of our weekend of Barbaro celebrations! (http://www.timwoolleyracing.com/news/2007/03/barbaro_birthda.php)
Update 1819: The fundraiser tonight at Delaware Park was really cool. Great to meet so many people who had come together for this, about $14k was raised! More details tomorrow, but a great start to the celebrations for the weekend!

Wendy has posted some pictures from the fundraiser last night: How are things going in Delaware? (http://forums.delphiforums.com/timwoolley/messages?msg=8297.24)

Happy Birthday, Barbaro! Fans Pay Tribute
By DAN GELSTON
No cake, no oats. Only memories, tears, and stories of Barbaro's spirit were shared at this birthday party.

Fans traveled from around the world to pay tribute and honor Barbaro at Delaware Park on Sunday on what would have been the Kentucky Derby winner's fourth birthday.

Strangers who had only chatted on Internet message boards hugged like old friends, connected by the colt who became a symbol of strength and courage before he was euthanized in January.

"I never would have anticipated anything like this, this time last year let alone four years ago when Barbaro was born," co-owner Gretchen Jackson told nearly 600 fans at the track's grove.
Not even the most dedicated horse fan could have ever imagined this. Fans of Barbaro, from Philadelphia to South Africa, jammed two tents for the "Celebration of Barbaro's Life," at the same track where he won his maiden race on Oct. 4, 2005.

"I'm going to try not to fall apart, but I'm going to," organizer Sharon Crumb said.
She did, and she wasn't alone.

Fans -- some wearing Barbaro shirts with a halo around the "B" -- dabbed tears while Barbaro's owners spoke or while they personally shared their stories with them. Roy and Gretchen Jackson were mobbed like rock stars, signing autographs, posing for pictures, but mostly just listening to the fans who wanted a minute to tell their own stories.

Someone put an "FOB" hat on Roy Jackson's head, signed by so many of Barbaro's devoted followers.

"You're our hero!" one fan cried out.

Not even the Jacksons thought Barbaro's legacy would live on like this. "It's made it a great deal easier for all of those connected and close to Barbaro to go day-by-day and go through this whole journey," Roy Jackson said. "I would implore you, as we're going to do, to continue to work on his legacy. I think that's the important thing to do now."

Exercise rider Alex Brown created the chat room on trainer Tim Woolley's Web site for racing fans that started the birth of the FOBs -- that's Fans of Barbaro. What once was an online Barbaro meeting spot has transformed into a horse welfare community.
The FOBs have raised about $250,000 and personally rescued nearly 600 horses, started fund drives for laminitis research and other equine diseases, and pressured lawmakers to pass anti-slaughter bills. On Saturday night, another $15,000 was raised at an auction fundraiser.
"Barbaro's done more good after his death," said Jo Deibel, who has had some of the horses rescued from killer pens moved to her horse haven.

Brown, a rider at the Fair Hill Training Center in Elkton, Md., where Michael Matz trained Barbaro, teamed with Crumb to organize the celebration. Without the Web site blog, Barbaro's fans may never have had an outlet to show their love and appreciation for the colt.

"It wasn't going to happen like this," Brown said. "I hope it's a good thing. These guys have raised boatloads of money for horse welfare, saved a whole bunch of horses. How can you not think this is a great thing?"

The FOBs surely thought this was a great event.
There was the fan in Minnesota who put together a banner of all of the FOBs with a fan from New York. The two women met for the first time this weekend.
No one traveled like 22-year-old Nadine Bradley, who made the 30-hour trip from Pretoria, South Africa. She also posted on Brown's message board, and knew she had to make the trip with her mother
"I think the fact that he put up a fight and didn't take it lying down," she said. "He wanted to live. He had that spark in his eye.
One fan needed a more permanent reminder of Barbaro. Mary Cebzanov, of Philadelphia, had the colt's image tattooed on the back of her left shoulder. She had Barbaro's face, a horseshoe under the neck, and his name inked in script under the shoe. Cebzanov watched Barbaro win his maiden race and said she became a true fan after he won the Holy Bull Stakes in February 2005. "I knew right away he was something special," she said. This wasn't an entirely somber birthday. Mini-horseshoes weighed down blue "Happy Birthday Barbaro" balloons, and everything from books to stuffed horses to painting were for sale or up for auction with proceeds going toward various equine charities.
"I just can't believe we all came together for this," Crumb said. "It's been more wonderful than I could have hoped. It's just a beautiful day. Fans were greeted by a lengthy welcoming sign written by, ahem, Barbaro. One excerpt:
"It is because of your dedication and devotion that you've achieved great things as a Barbaro Nation!! We will always be a team and I will be beside you and support you with your United Causes. ... Just call my name and I'll be there. ... Love, Barbaro."
Barbaro's ashes remain with the Jacksons while they decide the proper way to honor him.
"I see love and I see affection, and I hope they feel that back from me," Gretchen Jackson said.

I'm so glad that Barbaro's birthday party went well. Dan Gelston did a great write up on it.

I'm a bit disappointed though that NBC Barbaro Documentary didn't air because the hockey game went into double overtime, at least that's what happened in western NY. :( They said it will air at 9 PM and 12 Friday on CNBC. I'm guessing that CNBC is cable and I don't have cable so I will have to find someone locally that does that can tape it for me.

Update 1822: It will take a few days to fully process this weekend's celebrations, in the meantime here is some more coverage, this time the Thororoughbred Times: Barbaro's birthday celebrated at Delaware Park (http://thoroughbredtimes.com/national-news/2007/April/29/Barbaros-birthday-celebrated-at-Delaware-Park.aspx).
During the formal remarks, Jeannine Edwards read out a note from Edgar Prado, here it is:

BARBARO..... WHAT A BEAUTIFUL NAME TO PRONOUNCE. HE GAVE ME THE BIGGEST THRILL IN MY LIFE.... (SECOND ONLY TO MY KIDS BEING BORN.)
HE CHANGED THE LIVES OF SO MANY PEOPLE.... NOT ONLY BECAUSE HE WON THE DERBY, BUT BECAUSE OF THE HEART, COURAGE AND WILL TO LIVE HE SHOWED, EVEN AGAINST THE ODDS.
HE NEVER GAVE UP, HE FOUGHT SO HARD EVERY STEP OF THE WAY. HE TAUGHT US THAT TO GIVE UP IS NOT AN OPTION.
HE BEGAN THE FLAME OF HOPE THAT NEARLY ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE.... BUT WE MUST PUT OUR HEARTS INTO IT, IT IS UP TO US NOW TO ENSURE THIS FLAME WILL NEVER BE EXTINGUISHED.
WE HAVE TO REMEMBER HIM AS A TRUE CHAMPION AND A FIGHTER. THOSE WHO SAW HIM SAW GREATNESS.... HE LEFT HIS MARK ON HORSE RACING.
TO ALL THE FANS..... THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR ALL OF YOUR SUPPORT THROUGH THE ROUGH TIMES. YOUR CALLS, EMAILS, AND LETTERS REALLY HELPED ME STAY ON MY FEET.
BARBARO BROUGHT A LOT OF PEOPLE TOGETHER... PEOPLE THAT REALLY LOVE THE SPORT, BUT MORE IMPORTANTLY, REALLY CARE ABOUT THE ANIMALS. BARBARO STOLE THOSE HEARTS FOREVER.
THANK YOU FOR BEING LOVING, CARING PEOPLE. WE HAVE FOUND OUT THAT THERE ARE STILL GREAT FANS ALL OVER THE WORLD. WE MUST CONTINUE TO RAISE OUR VOICES TOGETHER..... ESPECIALLY IN THE NAME OF A HORSE THAT WE LOVED SO MUCH AND WHO BROUGHT SUCH JOY INTO OUR LIVES.
BARBARO IS GONE, BUT STILL LIVES IN OUR HEARTS, AND WILL FOREVER. THANK YOU BARBARO FOR MAKING ME A BETTER PERSON. THANK YOU FOR GIVING ME THE RIDE OF MY LIFE. THANK YOU FOR MAKING MY DREAM COME TRUE. THANK YOU FOR LETTING ME LOVE YOU.
I MISS YOU, MY FRIEND, AND ALWAYS WILL. HOPE TO SEE YOU DOWN THE ROAD AND WE CAN BE REUNITED FOR ONE MORE RIDE.

The celebration at Delaware Park on Sunday was awesome. Even though we were all coming together for the first time, everyone felt like a family and it was a very emotional day. I think Mr. & Mrs. Jackson were quite overwhelmed at how many of us FOB's were there. It was such an honor to get to meet them and just to be a part of the whole day. Many, many thanks to Alex for everything he did at Fair Hill and Delaware Park to make the day one I will never forget. Thanks to you VB for continuing to keep this thread going and to let us fans know what is happening. I wish you could have been with us on Sunday...

I' ve been biting my tongue on this until it officially went to print- which has been SOOOOO HARD. Maryland Life, a glossy bi-monthly magazine published in Frederick, MD, has been the official media sponsor of the Preakness since our beginning in 2005 and our May/ June issue is known to our readers is the "Preakness" issue. It is the biggest, most well- read issue of our year and always features a Preakness- related cover. Long story short, our "non-horsey", Michigan born editor, needed a little persuading, but I finally won my 3 month long lobbying campaign to put Barbaro on our cover this year. The photo, by Jim McCue has actually just won an award, as well...it is a magnificent shot of Barbaro running his last gallop at Pimlico on the morning of the race. There is Barbaro editorial in the magazine as well. I am so proud of this piece and so thrilled to be a part of making it happen! (and special thanks to VaBred whom I contacted several weeks ago regarding comtact information with regards to the editorial). The magazine returns to us from the printer today but will not be on sale at newsstands for another 10 days (it was unfortunately late coming out  ). It will also be available to be view online at marylandlife.com by week' s end or next Monday, at the latest.

Two days to go before the Derby and the atmosphere will now be building, the post position draw is complete (http://tcm.bloodhorse.com/viewstory.asp?id=38745). Barclay Tagg is now at Churchill (he typically arrives later in the week for the big events) and has always had a lot of confidence in his maturing colt: Confident Tagg Looking for Derby Encore. (http://tcm.bloodhorse.com/viewstory.asp?id=38749) He would be my preference for a win. I think my pick is Curlin and I'll also snag a couple of 15-1s, Hard Spun and Tiago. To be honest, I think unless Curlin is the real deal, this race is wide open!
As Churchill prepares for their big day, they need to prepare for a guest of honour: Churchill Prepares for Visit from Queen (http://tcm.bloodhorse.com/viewstory.asp?id=38740).
For those planning visits to Kentucky horse country, Elizabeth LaBan, FOB, wrote this tour of Kentucky for the Philadelphia Inquirer: Bluegrass Bonanza. (http://www.philly.com/inquirer/travel/20070429_Horse_farm_introduces_a_family_to_stallio ns__mares__birds_and_bees_.html)

"From a purely surgical perspective, it was extremely unsatisfying because he didn’t make it," Richardson, 53, said of Barbaro. "Professionally, I think we did the best we could. I'm not at all embarrassed by anything that was done. Personally, I'm very sad that we didn't save him. As a horseman, as someone who really wanted to save the horse, it's extremely dissatisfying."
On the other hand, he added: "Do I think we ended up doing some good things for the profession and the industry? Yes. The increased awareness of the issues of racetrack safety. People adopting horses. Even the awareness of a horse as an animal was increased. I think people became aware of the fact that sophisticated surgery can be done on horses. A lot of people knew that already; some didn't."

I watched the movie, The Queen, the other day, and during the included actual footage of the public hysteria over Diana's death, I kept wondering "What IS IT with these people?"

I never could figure out why they were so distraught over a woman they didn't know, who was none too tightly wrapped, who was overhorsed from the start, who made a pile of bad decisions, then discussed it all on international television.

I kept comparing the public reaction to Princess Diana's death to the reaction to Barbaro's death, and guess what? IMO--ours makes much more sense! Barbaro was an innocent, a hero, and really a noble, grand being.

I expect that someday, the attachment we feel to that horse will lessen--attachments have a way of doing that--but I don't think we'll ever forget what he was, and what he symbolized for us.

Nonetheless, if you haven't seen the movie, it's great. You know the story, but the acting is wonderful. Very, very few of the characters are less than perfectly drawn.

Today I received a book in the mail that I had ordered, but did not expect to arrive until after the Kentucky Derby tomorrow. It is the book on the 132nd Kentucky Derby featuring Barbaro. I turned through the pages with tears in my eyes. I still think of Barbaro often and feel such a sadness that he left us when he did -- hoping that he would somehow pull through again. The people who were close to him, his owners, his trainer, his jockey and vetinary staff at New Bolton, and especially Dr Richardson must still feel such a loss - when I sent a donation to the fund, I was not only sent a receipt, but I was sent a hand-written note from a very kind lady at the center. What a comfort to know that such generous, dedicated people were caring for Barbaro!

While I was at Rolex I wore my Barbaro hat, to keep the sun out of my eyes!, a lot of people commented on it...He is still in a lot of hearts and the cloud that will hang over the triple crown this year is dark. I fear watching it for might happen, I do not think I could watch it again.....I wear it every where I go and people love it! as they loved Barbaro. It is nice to see that there are people that GET IT!

Jackson's reaction at Barbaro event: pure appreciation
Posted Saturday, May 5, 2007
Gretchen Jackson said Friday that some of the things she does on the spur of the moment surprise even her.
She was explaining how it happened that she went down on both knees with her hands folded after she and her husband, Roy, entered the tent to a standing ovation at the Fans of Barbaro Birthday Celebration last Sunday at Delaware Park.
The Jacksons, of West Grove, Pa., owned the late 2006 Kentucky Derby champion.
They held a short press conference at Churchill Downs on Friday to talk of Barbaro's legacy, his win in last year's Derby and the Barbaro Memorial Fund.
"Things I do sometimes like that, I can't explain," Gretchen Jackson said with a quick smile. "I just have so much appreciation. The respect I have for them , I just wanted to thank them for everything. I didn't know how exactly to do that, and decided on something like that."
[B]Barbaro salute at Winterthur
A tribute to Barbaro will be held Sunday at the Winterthur Point-to-Point Races. The Jacksons, trainer Michael Matz and Dr. Dean Richardson, the surgeon who cared for Barbaro at the New Bolton Center, in Kennett Square, Pa., are scheduled to attend.

If you have ever been to Preakness you know they spiff the place up with flowers everywhere the eye can see. What you may not know is they leave almost all of it where it is and leave it to die if no one picks it up. Heck one year we came home with an 8 foot palm tree! Anyway I went to the stake barn the day after Preakness last year and the flowers that surrounded the outside of Barbaro's stall were still there. I got two tree like things and three smaller plants, all of which are supposed to look like black eyed susans but I think they are actually daisies. They were in bad shape and over time I ended up having to throw away all but one. I brought the one inside over the winter and it is now thriving to an extent, but needs a bigger pot to really do well.
I would be more than happy to give it to the Jackson's if you think it is something they would want. It would be the least I could do to thank them for all they have done for my life's passion which is stopping horse slaughter. I know some of you know them personally, think it is something they would want, or are they over loaded on momentos already?

He has his own race on that day! The first annual Barbaro Stakes will be run before the Preakness. The Jacksons will be there to hand out the trophy. In this way he will always be remembered on Preakness day.

For the record it is the renamed, ungraded, $100,000 Sir Barton Stakes (http://www.preakness.com/History/Preakness+History/BarbaroStakesInfo.htm) which debuted in 1993 in honor of Sir Barton, the first horse to win the later dubed Triple Crown in 1919.

The name may pose some conflict as Delaware Park also renamed a race in honor of him too. The $300,000 Grade 3 Leonard Richards Stakes was renamed as of March 1st the Barbaro Stakes. That race is run on July 15th.

Chelokee, a possibility for the Preakness, is also being considered for the first running of the Barbaro Stakes, excerpt:

A decision on Fair Hill-based Chelokee should be made by the end of the week according to trainer Michael Matz. The third place finisher in the Florida Derby (gr. I) worked five furlongs Monday morning with regular exercise rider Peter Brette aboard.
"He went really well," Matz said. "We'll walk him tomorrow and he'll jog on Wednesday. I thought Carl's horse ran pretty good. I guess he ran better than good. We are still undecided on the Preakness and maybe we'll go in the Barbaro."

Update 1817: Mike Jensen writes about Chelokee's (not yet determined) near term plan, and also notes Hard Spun is back galloping at Delaware Park: Matz might run Chelokee in Barbaro Stakes (http://www.philly.com/inquirer/sports/20070510_Matz_might_run_Chelokee_in_Barbaro_Stakes .html), excerpt:

"He'll gallop every day," said Jones, who isn't planning on breezing Hard Spun before the Preakness. "We'll plan on going out there every morning. I actually did a little more with him than I intended to when I went out there because he just felt like he wanted to do a little more. We jogged a half-mile, galloped a mile. Everything went well."
Over at Fair Hill, a few miles away, Matz said he would be watching his horse carefully over the coming days.
"My horse has been taking little steps forward all the time, and I want to keep him that way," Matz said. "And it's a long year and there are some big races coming up. I don't know if he's as good as those first three [Derby] horses. But I don't know that he isn't."

I ran into Mike Jensen last night, attending Dr. Richardson's lecture. It was a great event. Dr. Richardson, a man who is clearly at the very top of his profession, still carries guilt that comes along with failing to save Barbaro, it was evident throughout the evening. His presentation was very interesting and provided some back content that helped me understand a little more some of the "behind the scenes" work that went on throughout the months (pool recovery process etc). Dr. Richardson entertained many questions with ease. We were also able to make a couple of presentations. I presented some cheques from Delaware Park from the Laminitis Fund drive, and Jessica presented the artwork created by Anna (and cheque): Update #4 Dr. R's Artwork Gift (http://forums.delphiforums.com/timwoolley/messages?msg=9015.87). There are always so many frustrating, sad, disappointing, what-will-happen-next news stories in daily life -- but every so often there would be a brief report on the television broadcasts last year on how Barbaro had 'had a good day' or that he was improving. You know, just that little piece of news would uplift you -- I tended to focus on the 'good' reports, even though there would be countless reminders that his recovery could be rocky, at best. I really miss those 'good reports' -- my mind must have thought that one day -- the 'tomorrow is only a day away' day -- he would be as fully recovered as possible and be 'safe.' He is so missed.

Update 1884: There was a third update from Pimlico yesterday, Michael Matz won the stake and Ramon Dominguez is due to work Chelokee this morning:

Hidden Creek Farm's Street Sounds left the starting gate as the 1-5 favorite, quickly spurted to the lead from her outside post and raced on cruise the rest of the way to score an easy victory in the $80,000 Hilltop Stakes for 3-year-old fillies contested over the firm turf this afternoon at Pimlico.
Michael Matz trains the bay daughter of Street Cry, who was winning her third straight added money race. She captured the Selima Stakes on the turf at Laurel Park and the Grade II Beaumont at Keeneland in her previous two outings.
Ramon Dominguez, who has won three of four starts aboard Street Sounds, was at the controls as she sped under the finish line in 1:36.66 over the firm turf. Ethan's Car chased the leader throughout and finished a clear second, 5 1/4 lengths behind the winner. Cabbage Key ran third.
"That was very easy," said Dominguez, who earned his 3,000th career victory earlier this week. "I was very pleased with the way she did it. She took me to the lead and I felt like she was going pretty quick early on but at the same time she was very relaxed. I was very happy with her."
Street Sounds paid $2.40. The exacta returned $9.80 and the triple came back $19.60.
Martin Paramo, assistant trainer for Matz said, "She is a very nice, classy filly. She trains so good. Our last race was terrific on the Polytrack at Keeneland. It was really nice because she had four months off and she returned to be the same filly."
Earlier in the day Dominguez learned he would ride in his sixth Preakness Stakes a week from today but the 30-year-old does not know what three-year-old he will be aboard in the $1 million classic just yet. Agent Steve Rushing secured the mount on Chelokee if Matz decides to run his colt in the Preakness. If not, then Dominguez will ride Xchanger. The pair teamed up to win the Tesio Stakes at Pimlico three weeks ago.
Dominguez will work Chelokee Sunday morning at the Fair Hill Training Center. Matz has indicated he'll decide whether to run the son of Cherokee Run in the Preakness, Barbaro Stakes or wait for the Ohio Derby after the breeze. Dominguez would also have the mount if Matz opts for the Barbaro.
"You hate to wait until the last minute to let either party know," added Dominguez. "But I feel very fortunate to be in the position where I will have a chance to ride in such a big event."

"We've had people tell us it's going to be a long time before the Barbaro story goes away," Roy Jackson said last week. "We hope the emphasis is on using that to try to solve some of the critical issues in our business. We would like to see that be Barbaro's legacy. The fact that he fought so hard, we just hope down the road it helps other horses."

Update 1886: I met up with Dick Jerardi for breakfast, Dick spent more time with Michael Matz this morning after Chelokee's work. It looks like a decision on where / when to run Chelokee may be made tomorrow. Mike Jensen spent time with Dr. Richardson last week, including attending his lecture on wednesday: Failing to save Barbaro is doctor's only regret (http://www.philly.com/inquirer/sports/20070513_Failing_to_save_Barbaro_is_doctors_only_r egret.html), it concludes:

When he talks, Richardson always tries to make the point that the vast majority of Barbaro's days were good ones. He doesn't deny that he got extremely close to this patient. His best memories, he said, are of being alone with him as Barbaro grazed.
"It's like people. Some are nice, but kind of dull," Richardson said. "Others are just mean as snakes. . . . Barbaro, he was always interacting with his surroundings."
Barbaro's surgeon added, "He seemed a little larger than life, because he did some larger-than-life things."

Sunday's Pimlico Preakness update:

CHELOKEE - Centennial Farms' Chelokee will probably not compete in the Preakness but is headed to another race on the program, trainer Michael Matz said Sunday.
"Right now, I think that we're leaning toward going in the Barbaro Stakes," Matz said.
The Sir Barton was renamed the Barbaro by the Maryland Jockey Club during the winter to honor Matz' ill-fated 2006 Kentucky Derby winner, who was injured in the Preakness.
Chelokee has not raced since finishing third after a troubled trip in the Florida Derby on March 31 at Gulfstream. Matz said the Cherokee Run colt has recovered from a foot abscess and turned in a good workout Sunday morning at the Fair Hill Training Center.
"He went 5/8ths of a mile and did it very nicely," Matz said.
Chelokee covered the five furlongs under jockey Ramon Dominguez in 1:01 while working in company with Wood Be Willing, a 5-year-old stablemate.
Matz has until entries are due for the Preakness on Wednesday to change his plans, but he indicated it wasn't likely that he would run the colt in the Middle Jewel of the Triple Crown.
"I would say unless something happens where some of those top three horses scratch out, we'll probably go in the Barbaro," Matz said.

Matz Returns to Pimlico for Barbaro Stakes

Michael Matz was looking at an album full of Barbaro photos when the trainer's pony nuzzled up alongside to check things out.
"That's your buddy," Matz said, smiling at his longtime pony, Messaging, before accompanying another set of horses from the stable to their Tuesday morning gallop.
It's been nearly a year since the Kentucky Derby winner broke down in the Preakness, but fans of Barbaro still visit Matz at Fair Hill Training Center. It's where Barbaro spent many of his days before races, and where Matz carries on, training his horses and hoping another champion comes along.
His top 3-year-old is a colt named Chelokee, who missed the Kentucky Derby and won't run in Saturday's Preakness. However, Chelokee will run in the renamed Barbaro Stakes, the ninth race on the Preakness day program.
"It would be an honor to win a race named after a horse I trained," Matz said of his colt who finished third in the Florida Derby.
Barbaro was unbeaten in six starts before shattering his right hind leg at the start of the Preakness. By mid-July, the painful disease laminitis struck and when it became impossible to control, Barbaro was euthanized on Jan. 29.
Matz has managed to push forward, winning the Breeders' Cup Distaff with Round Pond and nearly having another Derby shot with Chelokee, who will "take on the big guns later this year," promises Peter Brette, Matz's assistant.
The 56-year-old Matz still thinks about Barbaro, a lot.
"When you lose something close to you it's very difficult," Matz said. "I'd been with him just about every day ever since we received the horse - now that would be two years ago. It was a long year with him trying to recover and it just didn't work."
Matz wraps himself in his work so he doesn't have too much time to think about the past.
"The more you stay busy and go on, you don't think about it as much," he said. "When things are quiet, you look back and say `Well, what if I had him in the Breeders' Cup or to compete over in Europe? How good was this horse? That's the question nobody will ever be able to answer."
While Matz will try to win the Barbaro Stakes - formerly the Sir Barton Stakes - current Derby winner Street Sense will attempt to take the Preakness and set up a Triple Crown shot at the Belmont Stakes on June 9.

They do feel like caretakers of Barbaro's legacy now, the Jacksons said. They talk of all the issues that have cropped up, regarding anti-horse slaughter and laminitis research and even safer racetrack surfaces. They recently donated $250,000 to the Belmont Child Care Association to start The Lael Stable Fund endowment, going toward helping backside workers. They hope the movement started at Belmont Park goes national.
The Jacksons also speak of preserving Barbaro's legacy on the track.
"I think the whole injury really overshadowed what he did as a race horse," Roy Jackson said.
Boiling down that legacy, Gretchen Jackson simply said, "Six and a half lengths," referring to his margin of victory in the Kentucky Derby, the largest in six decades, accomplished without the need of a whip by jockey Edgar Prado. And she added that he was a champion on any surface or track condition. "Grass to dirt, slop, dry - anything. He could run."

Barbaro Is Gone, but Good Is Being Done in His Name (http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2007/05/18/AR2007051802089.html), short excerpt:

"In the spirit of Barbaro, I recently bought a neglected 3-year-old who the owners were going to send to a low-end auction," reads a letter to Brown from a California participant. "Barbaro's spirit lives on in horses such as this. Without him, they would be either dead or living a terrible life."

Thank you so much for the photos at Pimlico. I'm in CA, and evn though I tuned into the Preakness broadcast for the whole event in the hope that the tributes to Barbaro would be aired, I saw only about 15 seconds in total encompassing the race finish and Michael Matz saying a few words to the commentator and then looking emotional, which I thought the newsman held the camera on him uncomfortably too long. I was so disappointed not to even hear if the parachutist event took place, nor any coverage of the Jacksons, etc. I had the non-cable broadcast NBC coverage and thought it was really lacking in its piece on Barbaro. I felt saddened and let-down all Saturday after the Preakness and then found that the photos had been posted here. The photos really are fantastic -- thank you so much.

OSB, I also felt the camera was held on MM at that very emotional moment WAY too long. I was actually telling them to leave him alone (like they could hear me through my TV!). Thought that was pretty uncalled for.
The Barbaro Stakes, parachute event, etc, was on ESPN's coverage and done quite well. Just not everyone can catch it that way.

On a sidenote, I was SEETHING last night when I ran to the grocery store. Sports show on the radio (I was looking for weather) was really bashing NBC for cutting away from the OT in the hockey game to carry the Preakness. They couldn't understand why there was an hour "pre-game," nor why anyone could care about watching horses run around a track. They were really rude and said they were going to write NBC and complain about it, despite a few people calling in and telling them the how's & why's. Idiots.....but then after saying that, they went right into nascar coverage. How's that for ironic? (can't watch horses run around a track, but you can watch cars go roundy-roundy for hours on end? How weird).

Not sure exactly, but it's my understanding that the vast majority of the money goes to laminitis research. I do know for a fact that it has been used to purchase some very needed new equipment for the hospital to benefit Barbaro and others in his condition. The painting is available for bidding on eBay May 22, with a starting price of $5,000. Bidding will continue through May 31.
"I tried to capture on my canvas the beauty, strength and elegance of this magnificent Kentucky Derby champion," said Sommer-Luarca. "It was my desire to capture the magical essence of Barbaro and the magic of his movement. And I feel very fortunate that my artwork can support the NTRA Charities - Barbaro Memorial Fund."
The Barbaro Memorial Fund was created to raise awareness and money for equine health and safety research in the name of 2006 Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands winner Barbaro, whose gallant struggle to overcome a catastrophic injury captivated horse enthusiasts around the world. Monies raised by the Barbaro Memorial Fund will support equine research projects, including those that focus on laminitis, the painful and often fatal hoof disease that plagued Barbaro for so much of his recuperative period following his injury in the 2006 Preakness Stakes. Those wishing to make cash donations to the NTRA Charities - Barbaro Memorial Fund may do so at www.ridingwithbarbaro.org (http://www.ridingwithbarbaro.org/).

Update 1966: HRTV will be airing interviews with Dr. Richardson this sunday, June 3, at 9 pm. It is their "Inside Information" program: HRTV's 'Inside Information' Features Barbaro, Richardson (http://news.bloodhorse.com/viewstory.asp?id=39132), excerpt:

"Dr. Richardson granted us a series of four interviews over the course of Barbaro's struggle," said Amy Zimmerman, HRTV's executive producer. "The first was in August, the next in October, the third in January and the last in early February. What ultimately happened to Barbaro came as a shock to a lot of people, but in fact, Dr. Richardson was brutally honest since the beginning as to what a tough fight this was going to be.

I guess I don't come to this thread often enough. I just walked by the bench this afternoon & I thought, "Hm, didn't know about that." Especially, I didn't know it was brand new, just dedicated. It is right outside the "back" door of the admissions area/main desk, toward the horse trailer/van parking.

I usually park in the visitor parking (toward the front entrance) if I am just picking up meds or something. But today we had to take a sweet little TB filly in for an appointment so I was around back.

It is a great article, but I HATE the begining of it and this paragraph especially: "

Never fall in love with a horse.
They were taught to race when they were two, and they didn't all take to it. Some were just stubborn. Some, like juvenile delinquents, went out of their way to do the exact opposite of what you told them to do. Some were scared. Some were just bored. Some were just mean. Some were dumb as rocks. In 2005, 72,487 horses pulled out of the starting gate in races across North America. Their average earnings were $15,851. It wasn't enough to pay for the cost of maintaining them, and of those who ran, 26 percent earned less than $1,000.
Never fall in love with a horse."

Thank you for posting the link in VF. It was insightful to read excerpts from Mrs Jackson's journal -- what overwhelming faith, strength and courage to weather the days of Barbaro's treatment! What a sensitive and dedicated man Michael Matz is, and how devoted he was to Barbaro -- so many people whose lives were touched forever by this special horse!

I want to again thank VirginiaBred for advising me where to send a poem about Barbaro and a note to the Jacksons c/o New Bolton. I received kind acknowledgement today -- it was so unexpected and brought on the tears!

I phoned the lady who I had addressed it to at New Bolton to thank her for forwarding it onwards. She was so very gracious -- as are all the staff I have ever spoken to. They are very special people!

(Speaking about journals and diaries, I still write in a diary I started the week before Robert Kennedy's sad passing in LA! My stable 'buddies' at the time and I vowed to start to write about our adventures so we could read them for future reflection. One contribution remembers that, on the day that the whole world was glued to their televisions and radios to witness the first landing on the moon by astronauts, I wrote that this teenager was out feeding and caring for my horse and pony like any other day! I still remember that I was the only vehicle on the road driving home from the stable on arguably the most significant day since the dawning of mankind! Kids and horses!)

We had tossed around the idea of Gary Stevens for Peter, but we thought that would make it too Seabiscuit-like. Plus Gary doesn't have Peter's cool accent. And Peter deserves a better actor, lol.

Thank You
I now know what they all must have felt like I also did everything I could, but when nothing is working you have to pull your heart away.
With love comes grief.

I was talking horse racing with a friend. She is an old time sort. Grew up hand walking horses at the track. Rode Point to Points as a young women.
She never has alot of emotion...unless she is talking about Barbaro.

She said that in the last seveal years he was the first horse that gave Amreica something to believe in. Even before his injury.

She called him perfect having only one flaw....

He ran faster than his angles could fly.

By any chance did she actually say " He ran faster than his ANGELS could fly. :)

If so, that is probably very true. :) :) :)

I kinda figured it was a typo. You should see a lot of mine EVEN after I've proofed it..

One word I have a heck of a time with is the word 'result'. It always comes out 'reslut'!!!!

I go jogging every morning and carry a snack for the squirrels in the park (feeding them gets me motivated to do it -- I feel guilty if they go hungry waiting for me if I am a no-show!) -- and everyday I make up little rhymes in my head about Barbaro as I shuffle up and back. I still feel for all the people who were so involved in his short life -- such a special horse gone much too soon.

I think I've lost all train of thought after reading that ....

I heard word on where they are going to burry him today - is it common knowledge, or should I keep my mouth shut. Just need to know.
