Sunday~
Thanks to a amazing Barbaro fan, this was forwarded to me to share and post. I have sent it to Alex as well. Simply beautiful.
I was sent this by a Barbaro fan. Here is the story that goes along with it:
I started writing a song about Barbaro during the recent Oklahoma ice storm when my power was out for 11 days. At that time, Barbaro was still alive, and like a lot of other people, was now sure he was going to make it. Unfortunately, that all changed a week later. Sadly, I had to start reworking the lyrics to reflect that. It is now complete, and I hope this meets with approval from his many fans.
From, oktahahorses
(a little about the song writer: He spends quite a bit of time researching the subject before writing the song and laying the track down. He has also done one on Lost in the Fog, Billy Silver and Ruffian. He has done some historical ones too such as Last Call (about the last day firehorses were used and replaced with trucks), Dan Patch and Poco Lena (legendary cutting horse).
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fC7fejz3H7M
I watched with tears in my eyes as Barbaro won the KY Derby but I couldn't watch any more when, during the Preakness, the announcer spoke about Bobby being pulled up. I just couldn't watch that one more time. I hope the rest of the video was good. :(
I still check in a couple of times a day and still light a candle either before or afterwards. :)
Thanks again VB and Alex for all the updates and to anyone else that finds something about Bobby. :)

I watched the video and was okay until they announced Barbaro is being Pulled up and I started to cry all over again... I guess I shouldn't worry about where he will be place...The physical remains are a minor detail now. He lives in our hearts every day...
Thanks again VB

A nice opinion piece on Barbaro: MY TURN: Barbaro set example for people (http://www.burlingtonfreepress.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20070217/OPINION/702170324/1006). This article reminds me to thank everyone who sent me cards and wishes after Barbaro's passing. Many of the cards included stories about how Barbaro had effected them deeply and persuaded them to action. Actions included directly rescuing a horse, contributing to group efforts financially for horse rescue or actively engaging with government. A friend of mine called yesterday, she is planning to open up her farm to rescue some horses. Very cool.
Thanks Alex~

Wow, it's been a week since I lost it over Barbaro, but seeing the words "the end" at the end of the song just killed me. If anyone knows where I can get one of the Barbaro bracelets, please PM me. I know he's gone, but I believe that he is just as strong in his death and his legacy will live forever.
Thanks so much to VB and Alex for keeping us up to date. I will never forget your kindnesss during this time of tragedy.

Update 1500: A nice story about a new equine shelter in Kentucky: A shelter from harm; Horses get care, retraining for possible adoption at new facility (http://www.kentucky.com/mld/kentucky/16731434.htm). Staci Hancock, president of the Board for this new facility, is very active in anti horse slaughter.
Update 1499: Another very cold morning this morning at Fair Hill. We are told this is the last day of this persistantly cold weather, I will believe it when I feel warm! The Tapeta track was closed until 9 am, they were working on it earlier. This will be the same tomorrow, and then things should return to normal.
Tim had the idea to use the horsepaths this morning (before 9) as our training track. It worked out quite well. I think we got a good 2 mile jog into each of them (for me, Hawty Creek, Nonpariel, Slew and two more) and it was nice to do it in the fresh air, even though it was thoroughly cold. At 9 I had three left, they each went to the track. They were pretty psyched about that, the first bronked its way onto the track, the second was a little better, as was the third. For each we did two circuits, galloping slowly from the 5/8ths to the quarter pole (a mile and a quarter). The track seemed fine for slow exercise.
It is sad to note that Alison Hershbell passed away last weekend. She was too young. As a jockey she provided Tim with his first winner, London Ice.

Update 1504: Mike Jensen reports on Hard Spun's race: Favorite Hard Spun hits tough times at Southwest Stakes (http://www.philly.com/mld/philly/sports/16736741.htm). Its hard to find excuses for Hard Spun. They are speculating that he just did not like the track, yet he worked over the same track recently and it was a very impressive work. You can also consider that Hard Spun easily beat Teuflesberg (the winner) in his last start, but then in his last start they changed the tactics (apparently unsuccessfully) on Teuflesberg. No matter, Hard Spun had been impressive to this point, yesterday he was not. Lets see how he comes out of the race and assume they will still move forward to the Rebel.
On other triple crown news, Breeders' Cup winner Street Sense has his first serious work of the year: Street Sense starts to buckle down (http://drf.com/news/article/82688.html), excerpt:
"This is what we've been building to thus far all winter," said Nafzger. "He really kicked in down the stretch and hit the line good. We've hit every step perfectly with him up to now, but he's still a couple of more works away before he's ready to run. But a work like this gives us more options to consider as we get closer."
Thanks Alex.

Update 1505: Wow, it was more than 40 degrees before the morning began, it felt like a veritable heatwave! I rode six today. Hawty Creek jogged about two miles, around the horsepaths. The rest went to the Tapeta track.
The Tapeta track opened at 7:15 am this morning, it was scheduled to open at 9. I guess with the milder night we were able to get on it earlier. Anyway, all the horses went well. I rode Quick Quest again for Tim, he does seem like a nice type of horse. Slew also went well, especially considering its been a few days since he has been on the track.
Mediman seems to have come out of her first race in good order. Tim also noted that a couple of people at Laurel yesterday came up to him and told him they enjoyed reading this site. Very cool (that's the first time someone has approached Tim because of the site I think.)
All in all a decent morning, which finished up with a quick conversation with a friend of mine in Dubai who has spent sometime running their Gallery (http://www.godolphin.com/gallery.asp). There may be some good ideas for the Museum the Jackson's are considering.

Update 1506: An excellent opinion piece from the Bloodhorse: It's the Horse, Stupid (http://opinions.bloodhorse.com/viewstory.asp?id=37652), a short excerpt:
If racing learns one thing from the spectacular outpouring of public emotion during Barbaro's eight-month ordeal, it should be this---it's the horse, stupid. Your fans love your horses. From a marketing standpoint, the horse is racing's greatest asset; however, the business does little to protect it, and in so doing, is risking everything.

Prado says Barbaro won him an Eclipse
Jockey: Ky. Derby winner changed my 'whole life'
By Sandra McKee
Sun Reporter
Originally published February 21, 2007
Edgar Prado, dressed in a blue robe and white slippers, sat on an old desk just outside the jockeys' room at Laurel Park yesterday and considered what Barbaro, the late Kentucky Derby champion, meant to him. "You know, the year before Barbaro, I won as many races," he said. "I won the Belmont, but I didn't win an Eclipse Award. I've been nominated four other times, but I didn't win.
"Barbaro won the Eclipse for me. There are some champion horses who can change your whole life. Barbaro did that for me."
A year ago, Prado had five Kentucky Derby prospects to choose from and early on he picked Barbaro. Yesterday, he said there was never really any doubt.
"All along, he was the easy choice," Prado said. "He did everything well. And then he won the Holy Bull and confirmed it with the Florida Derby. You hope for a horse like that every year, but horses like Barbaro don't come along very often. Horses like Barbaro are special.
"But there is always hope."
This spring, Prado is riding Canadian-bred Buffalo Man for trainer Cam Gambolati and Kentucky-bred Sightseeing for trainer Shug McGaughey.
"Buffalo Man won his last race at Gulfstream Park," Prado said. "He was good in a tough race. ... . If he keeps running well and winning, it will give us a better idea of what he can do."
In January, Prado was in Peru, doing charity work for children there, raising money for a school. That's where he was caught by surprise with the news about Barbaro's death.
"I thought he was going to make it," he said. "I was there [at New Bolton Center] in November and he looked great. And then I talked to [trainer] Michael Matz in December and he said [Barbaro] was ready to leave, but they couldn't decide where to send him."
Prado paused as he remembered how, all at once, Barbaro took a turn for the worse and within days was gone, euthanized after contracting laminitis in all four feet.
"I had never seen a horse go that far with a broken leg and laminitis," Prado said softly. "He showed so much courage to live and to win. He was a fighter, a true champion. He went through everything and was still trying at the end. I hope we all learned something from him."
Prado said it is the same, whether the champion is a person or an animal.
"You don't become a champion just by winning for yourself," he said. "It's what you do for others that makes you special, makes you great. "When Barbaro won in Kentucky, he didn't just win the Kentucky Derby, he won people's hearts. And in our hearts, he will forever be a champion."

Update 1510: The AVMA has a nice piece on the increased awareness of Laminitis as a result of Barbaro: Increased research to follow in Barbaro's wake (http://www.avma.org/onlnews/javma/mar07/070301d_pf.asp), excerpt:
"My hope is that the events over the last few months, and in particular Barbaro's unfortunate passing, have raised the public's awareness of the frustrating and devastating effects of laminitis and will catapult efforts to raise substantial research funding that can be used to advance our knowledge and understanding of this horrible disease through unified, collaborative research efforts," Dr. Moore said.
Fortunately Barbaro has also increased the public awareness of horse slaughter, something the AVMA does not support: It's back---Congress, again, takes up horse slaughter (http://www.avma.org/onlnews/javma/mar07/070301k.asp).

I think it is a huge fault of supporters of the ban to suggest people like the AVMA are AGAINST banning horse slaughter - they much like myself would love to support a bill that ensured all horses were well cared for and safe from harm, we just think this attempt is poorly thought out and based on emotion.

HLAStallion--I think you need to realize that you're not preaching to the choir on this thread. Barbaro's owners, especially Mrs.Jackson, fervently support the ban on horse slaughter, as do most, if not all, of the Barbaro faithful.

The AVMA's, or more specifically, the AAEP since they are the one's who work on horses OFFICIAL position is that they are for horse slaughter. They even go as far as to say it is an acceptable means of euthanasia. Obviously that doesn't mean that every single member feels that way, but they are under the umbrella of agreement by their membership. I refuse to turn this beautiful thread into a slaughter debate, but if you are going to post here you should at least get your facts straight.

I refuse to turn this beautiful thread into a slaughter debate.
The slaughter issue has been part of this thread practically from the beginning.
I can't imagine every Barbaro fan is going to agree on everything, it seems rather troublesome that only people who read this or post here or agree on a very complicated issue are the "real" Barbaro fans (just the vibe I'm getting though it hasn't been said outright)

Update 1512: Steve Haskins writes about the Kentucky Derby and trainers' strategy for getting horses ready for the first saturday in May: Kentucky Derby Trail: Two for the Road (http://tcm.bloodhorse.com/viewstory.asp?id=37646). I am not sure why Barbaro's five week gap between the Florida Derby and Kentucky Derby is considered a "layoff". I am sure he was in full training and likely more trainers may try the same this year.
Santa Anita has now officially committed to a synthetic surface, and will put it in place during the Del Mar meet, no decision has yet been made as to which surface: Santa Anita to go synthetic this year (http://drf.com/news/article/82726.html).
Penn National is still struggling to get its live racing program back: Penn National cancels Wednesday's live racing (http://thoroughbredtimes.com/national-news/2007/February/21/Penn-National-cancels-Wednesday-live-racing.aspx) (its been about three weeks). I would be curious how they have managed their training hours in the morning.

Barbaro's bravery touched many hearts
Thursday, February 22, 2007
By Linda Wilson Fuoco, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
Beautiful Barbaro captured hearts, exhibiting speed and determination on every track where he raced. We thought we were watching thoroughbred history in the making. As we cheered him on, we thought we were watching the next Triple Crown winner.
When Barbaro broke down in the Preakness last May, horse lovers wept.
When that big colt harnessed his determination and courage to battle life-threatening injuries, we loved him even more. Horse lovers rooted for Barbaro to recover from a broken leg that would have been an instant equine death sentence not so very long ago.
That Barbaro lost his battle to recover and survive does not take away from his legacy. Barbaro's ordeal will help other horses -- and not just the well-bred racehorses and show horses that are worth millions of dollars.
Horses are relatively fragile creatures. Slim legs and thin ankles support bodies that usually weigh more than 1,000 pounds.
Racehorses aren't the only equines that break legs. Victims include chubby ponies cherished by little girls and calm horses ridden slowly on wooded trails. Riderless horses break legs frolicking in pastures. Horses even break legs in stalls filled with fluffy piles of straw or sawdust.
Do you remember Ruffian? In 1974 and 1975 many people were calling her the greatest filly in the history of thoroughbred racing. Undefeated in 10 starts, she broke a leg on July 7, 1975, during her 11th race.
Many were surprised when she wasn't euthanized. She was anesthetized and surgeons repaired her leg. She struggled and thrashed as she woke up. She fought caretakers who tried to restrain her. She re-broke her injured leg and was euthanized.
What veterinarians learned while trying to save Ruffian has helped other horses, including Barbaro.
"Equine anesthesia drugs are much better now," said Dr. Kimberly May, an equine surgeon and a medical and science writer with the American Veterinary Medical Association. "We learned from Ruffian."
Barbaro came through the anesthesia just fine, waking up in a sling and suspended in a pool of water. He reportedly did not thrash or struggle.
Barbaro and Ruffian had completely different personalities, said Dr. May, who did not treat either horse but has followed both cases. "Ruffian did not have the temperament" to survive the treatment.
Thoroughbreds are bred to run fast. They are bred to fight to win. They can be hot tempered and hard to handle, especially when they are young.
Despite that breeding, Barbaro was generally calm and easy to handle throughout his treatment.
The horse bred to run fast was, amazingly, calm enough to endure eight months of standing still.
Barbaro was treated at the University of Pennsylvania's New Bolton Center for Large Animals, located about 20 miles from the main campus in Philadelphia.
Horse owners in Pennsylvania are lucky it's there, for veterinary schools provide advanced and experimental treatments that regular vets can't provide.
Horse lovers in Western Pennsylvania are more likely to send gravely sick and injured horses to the veterinary school at Ohio State University, because Columbus is closer to Pittsburgh.
Barbaro, like all veterinary school patients, had round-the-clock care and supervision every day, Dr. May said. The team of caregivers included young veterinary students. Barbaro's top doc was Dean Richardson, chief of surgery at Penn's veterinary school.
It wasn't broken bones that killed Barbaro. It was a painful foot condition known as laminitis. Toxins can cause laminitis, and so can unequal weight distribution. In Barbaro's case, as he favored his injured leg, he put more weight on his other three legs, and laminitis developed. At the end, vets said, the horse literally did not have a good leg to stand on.
"We lose a lot of horses to laminitis every year," Dr. May said, "but we save many, too. We've come a long way. Barbaro's death will draw attention to the condition and may raise more support for laminitis research."
Why did so many people care about this horse? Even Dr. Richardson wept on Jan. 29 when he told the world that Barbaro was dead. "People love greatness," Dr. Richarson said. "People love the story of his bravery."

Update 1525: Alie, from Kennett Florist, posted this comment (timestamp: 9:55pm):
Hi All
It is still verrrrrrrry cold in Kennet Square. We have another storm watch for Sunday into Monday morning. I can't wait for it to warm up. We have been busy catching up form Valentines Day. I am getting close to seeing my desk again. Of course you know how to clean your desk is to put on someone else's. Like Rachel's, it our little joke. We are very excited about April 29th. It will be so cool to meet so many of you in person. It will be a busy weekend. We have kennett high's prom on Friday. Sat we are open as normal. If all goes well the art fundraiser will still be held for laminitis and I will be helping Marge & Shelia with that. Sunday we will be with you all at DE Park. I am trying to get the word out to local FOB who are not on the net and staff at NBC. I told the Jackson's about it. Gretchen called me to catch up, on Thursday morning. They are still away but will be back soon. It is funny how this week was so hard on me. It all hit me: nothing will ever be the same again. My car even wants to turn into NBC. I have been making that turn almost every day for 8 months. I miss talking to Dr Sweeney & staff daily. I also miss seeing Gretchen often. I talked to Dr Sweeney this week, even on her vacation; we needed to be in touch. I think that last week none of us had really talked. So this week we were missing the bonds that Barbaro had made in our lives. Not just to FOB's but each other. This whole experience has changed us all. I have never thought in my wildest dreams this could have happened. I have no words to describe it all but wow. I want to thank you all for being apart of this. We will always love and miss the boss horse. Good night from Kennett Square & KF
Alie

Update 1524: Just spoke to Peter Brette in warmer Florida. They worked Aunt Henny, Chelokee and Round Pond today. Peter said they were very happy with how each of them worked. Chelokee went 5/8ths really well. Round Pond's work was very good, she sat in behind horses and switched to the outside and was very strong. Both Aunt Henny and Chelokee are likely to run next weekend.
Update 1523: Who's Happy was third this afternoon at Philadelphia Park. It was another sprint race, and on a speed favoring track, the winner went wire to wire. Happy ran well, but Tim now thinks it is time to stretch her out. She is a big filly and looks like she will go long.

Update 1526: Aqueduct has now closed the doors on Fair Hill: NYRA bans some shippers to prevent herpesvirus (http://drf.com/news/article/82821.html). That makes three tracks at this point I think (Penn National and Charles Town). We had to deal with a quarantine last year and it was a very tense time for everyone. Here is an excerpt:
The restrictions were adopted after a mare that had been treated at the Marion duPont Equine Medical Center in Leesburg, Va., had to be put down on a Virginia farm due to equine herpesvirus, said Dr. Anthony Verderosa, NYRA's chief examining veterinarian.
"There's now a lot of potential exposures all over those four states," Verderosa said. "We're just doing this as a precaution to see if anything becomes apparent in those four states in the next week or two, and if it doesn't it'll just fizzle out."

Poor judgment on their part running an article that was factually incorrect (among other things). I also just got off the phone with Sue McMullen. It is the first time we have talked. She will begin weekly "global" updates in the near future, I am psyched about that.

Update 1534: Dr. Richardson recently spoke publicly for the first time since the press conference on January 29 about Barbaro: Horse surgeon recalls Barbaro. (http://www.palmbeachdailynews.com/news/content/news/barbaro0227.html) The article concludes:
"We were following the rules that we set out in the beginning, which was we were not going to put him through undue pain and there was no realistic chance of him making it," Richardson said.
Richardson said he felt "privileged" to have worked with Barbaro.
"He was a really great, I think potentially a super, horse," Richardson said. "Beyond that, he was just a charming horse. Some horses just have a whole lot more than others and he had a lot of personality. He was a tough horse, a courageous horse and he tried his best. What else can you ask for?"

I admire Dr. Richardson for many, many reasons, but his willingness and ability to show his feelings about this horse--just WOW. I amost can't decide if that's just the icing on the cake, or if it's the thing I admire the most. None of us, ever again, have to apologize for the emotion we invest in our horses. What a gift he has given us. (one of many)

I also want to add my thanks to VB and Alex for continuing to post here. I still check every day and there are many articles I would not have seen if not for these two good people. The article about Dr. R. only reaffirms what I thought about him all along. He is a wonderful surgeon but more than that, a caring, loving person who is not afraid to show how much his patients matter to him. Barbaro was lucky to be in his capable hands for 8 months and he was hurting just like the rest of us on that Monday in January.

Update 1542: Delaware Park has named a stakes race for Barbaro: BARBARO MEMORIALIZED WITH DELAWARE PARK STAKES RACE (http://www.delawarepark.com/press/press.html):
Delaware Park's Chief Operating Officer, Bill Fasy today announced that it has officially changed the name of the Leonard Richards Stakes to the Barbaro Stakes. Like the Leonard Richard Stakes, The Barbaro, will be a Grade III race for three olds and will be run July 15th during Delaware Park's Delaware Handicap weekend, July 14 and 15. This renamed stakes race will continue to feature a guaranteed purse of $300,000.
"Our new Racing Secretary, Ismael "Izzy" Trejo, suggested the idea of The Barbaro Stakes, and we all agreed this was a terrific way to memorialize Barbaro's legacy and to honor the Jackson family and Dr. Dean Richardson ," said Bill Fasy. Added Trejo, "The deep admiration and love everyone felt for Barbaro was truly overwhelming. To be able to honor such a tenaciously spirited horse, whose remarkable career started here at Delaware Park in 2005, with its own Stakes race, makes the racing family here at Delaware Park extremely proud."
Great news from Delaware Park. This will of course not have any effect on our planned April 29 visit to celebrate Barbaro.

Update 1548: Just received from Breyer:
Breyer Animal Creations, maker of the world's finest model horses, announced today that in response to overwhelming consumer demand, more Barbaro portrait models will be produced to commemorate the late racehorse.
"We have received so many calls, emails and letters from children and adults alike asking us to create more Barbaro models. By honoring those requests, we will also have the opportunity to donate $10 from the sale of each model to the new Laminitis Fund at the University of Pennsylvania's School of Veterinary Medicine, started by his owners Roy and Gretchen Jackson. The fund will support research into this terrible disease which has ended the lives of so many horses, including the valiant Barbaro," said Anthony Fleischmann, President of Reeves International, Inc., Breyer's parent company.
Barbaro, the 2006 Kentucky Derby winner, was euthanized on January 29 because of complications from laminitis which developed during his convalescence from surgery. He had a career-ending breakdown in the 2006 Preakness Stakes. Although Barbaro was a model patient, handling his recovery as bravely as he ran his races, he succumbed to laminitis despite the best efforts of a superb team of veterinary professionals headed by Dr. Dean Richardson, chief of surgery at the George D. Widener Hospital at the University of Pennsylvania's School of Veterinary Medicine's New Bolton Center. During that time, the tremendous outpouring of worldwide support and media attention made Barbaro's fight for his life as well as the eight month struggle to save him, one of the most heartfelt media stories of the year.
Breyer's Barbaro portrait model will be available for purchase through 6:00 p.m. Eastern time on April 2, 2007 at Breyer's website at www.breyerhorses.com or call 1-800-735-9205. The price is $45 plus $8 each shipping and handling, limit two (2) per household or address. The model will begin shipping in July 2007 when Barbaro models will also be available from retailers. Ten dollars from the sale of each model will be donated to the Laminitis Fund at The University of Pennsylvania's School of Veterinary Medicine. The Barbaro model will include a certificate of authenticity signed by trainer Michael Matz, jockey Edgar Prado, surgeon Dr. Dean Richardson and Anthony Fleischmann, President of Reeves International, Inc. Each model will have Barbaro's name stamped on the belly in gold ink. It will be packed in a customized, four-color Breyer box featuring pictures and the story of his career.

Afternoon FOB Family!!
It's been a busy week here. Alie and I just got back from New Bolton. We've been happy to be back up to NBC this week. A couple of baskets to Libby and her donor animals (all 300 hundred of them!) and a basket to Real Quiet... who apparently loved the carrots. We also had some people treats - we had trays of cookies for the staff on Wednesday. Food always is a big hit with the gang up there. We have had a lot of response about the breakfast, so we're doing two. And we're going to be putting together something for the night shift.
We had some deliveries today to the Jackson's. We wished Roy a Happy Birthday from all the FOB's. We also delivered the cards that many of you have sent to us to forward to them. Mrs Jackson is overwhelmed with the outpouring of love that they have received from all of you. She hopes that everyone is stil going strong with the anti-horse slaughter movement, and we assured her we are.

Update 1553: Some great racing yesterday all around. Lava Man continued his California dominance with a powerful win in the Santa Anita Handicap. Great Hunter proved to be the best in the Robert Lewis Stakes, beating Sam P who fought hard the entire race. I am not sure how tough this Derby prep was, it included a maiden and a couple who had recently broke their maiden. The big Derby prep in the east was won by Scat Daddy, who got up impressively to beat Stormello and NoBiz. The three were within a half length of each other at the wire with Adore the Gold a close fourth. NoBiz ran erratically, and this is something that I assume needs to be sorted out if he is to showcase his talent effectively. I still believe he is the most talented 3yo we have seen thus far, but winning is the all important thing to do.
Michael Matz's Chelokee was impressive in a troubled trip in the allowance race at Gulfstream. Lets hope he can take a next step up after winning this condition.
Steve Klesaris' Diabolical ran well for third in the Richter Scale (that was marred by the tragic breakdown of Bright One). He looked like the winner at the quarter pole but Pletcher's horse, Half Ours, produced more.
Pletcher also won the Hutcheson (Edgar Prado aboard King of Roxy) which helped make this his best day as a trainer. Corinthian is looking like a good older handicap horse, he narrowly held off Hesanoldsalt.

But Delaware Valley racing fans will also be watching the development of the first-born of other famous local horses, Afleet Alex and Smarty Jones. I have heard nothing about MIH having an injury - MIH is just growing differently/slower than Barbaro and with owners like the Jackson's and a trainer like Michael they are in no rush. He will race when he is ready. The Jackson's are smart people, MIH is a good horse and has a lot going for him already, breeding, famous half brother, etc - if they play their cards right, be patient he will run good races, and could produce some good wins, and a nice price as a stallion!

Hm, I wonder how long they will keep trying with him before they send him home or on to be a hunter/jumper/dressage prospect? Just 'cause Barbaro was dynamic doesn't mean little bro' MIH will be. :(
I was fortunate in that the trainer who had my current OTTB sent him back to the farm telling the owners that he 'just didn't like it at the track any more'. I'm still trying to figure out how he actually managed 4 wins. I bought him as a 7 yr old event horse that had gone from beginner novice to training level in 6 events BUT he had a fabulous rider to have taken that far that fast. Jennifer Johnson was 1st in the '96 Olympic selection trials (3-day eventing) on my boy's 1/2 brother, Tiger One. I described my boy as being 7 going on 30 whereas my horse, a QH was 12 going on 3 The QH is now 20 and hasn't changed one bit!

That is putting the cart before the horse - word has always been he was going to be one you have to go slow with, and expectation was as an older horse he should do rather well! I doubt you see him being rehomed as any sort of prospect, if he does not shine particularly brightly in the US I am sure he will be bought by South America as a Stallion!

"I wasn't going to go," said Deborah Cronin, an equine and small animal vet from Califon, N.J. "There are a lot of feelings on my part about Barbaro, and I wasn't sure I wanted to relive them. But my friends talked me into it, and I'm glad they did. It was a very heartfelt and warm speech. He spoke very well about the events leading up to the end. ... He cleared up a lot concerning why the end came so fast."
and
"Things aren't pre-Barbaro normal," he said. "There still are follow-up stories, and I've had at least 1,000 letters since he died. For a long time, they were coming at a rate of about 100 a day, every day, and those are the ones just addressed to me.
"If they're addressed to me, I read them. It's good. It's bad. Some are straightforward, but some are so eloquent and heartfelt, they reopen wounds."

HBO Sports hopes to parlay a soon-to-be-announced documentary on ill-fated champion horse Barbaro ....
The network will soon announce that it is in production on a Barbaro documentary, chronicling the courageous Kentucky Derby winner whose horrific injuries sustained in last May's Preakness Stakes race led ultimately to his being put down in January.
Barbaro's battle to survive became front-page news, garnering so much attention that it created a backlash, as people wondered why the country grew obsessed with a horse.
We are going to try to explain why Barbaro became so significant and important to the American public. The entire country rallied around this horse, says HBO Sports President Ross Greenburg of the project, slated to debut the first week of June.
That would put it in around the same time as the Belmont and ABC/ESPN's airing of the movie on Ruffian

Update 1562: A brutally cold morning this morning. As I was arriving at the barn first thing the radio informed me it was 1 degree with the wind chill! Thankfully I ride for smart trainers and we shedrowed everything this morning. I do know of others who went out there, and all I can say it, glad it was not me :) (Apparently the Tapeta track was good though). Hawty Creek was my first to shedrow, followed by two for Tim, Grandma and Quick Quest. I then rode Bandit (for Lynda) and three for Bobby, including Flash. The shedrow was quite calm and we managed to organize our sets well so we could get a good jog in with each horse. Before my last set Mrs. Jackson called for a quick catch up. We had not talked for a while so it was fun to reconnect. Since shedrowing makes the morning a little faster I had a little more time to curry Hawty Creek, and her coat was literally falling off! I also managed to clean my tack, I need to try to do that more than once a week. Anyway, all in all a decent morning given the ridiculousness of this weather. Apparently it will be cold and snowy tomorrow!

Update 1566: Hard Spun is now pointing to the Lane's End at Turfway Park rather than the Rebel at Oaklawn where he has been stabled for the past month or so: Hard Spun to run in Lane's End, not Rebel. (http://www.philly.com/mld/philly/sports/16849391.htm) Larry Jones, Hard Spun's trainer, also gallops Hard Spun, here is an excerpt:
"We're not saying he couldn't win the Rebel," Jones said. "He's a very classy horse. He's a very talented horse. But he's telling me every day when I gallop him... he's just not comfortable when he's traveling over this surface. All the others he does effortlessly."

I have to laugh, I just dropped a line through the NPR site to Mr. Deford.
The people I work for now currently have a 3 yr old gelding in the barn named,
"Coupe De Ville" The Jockey club won't do both. The 'e' becomes less important but it will prevent the alternative spelling until this horse stops running or however they deem the time between the names.
Additionally, I don't think these folks did a whole lot of checking, "The Price of Love" is already taken by a filly born in 2003.

Update 1569: Jeannine Edwards just sent this e-mail regarding her interview with Dr. Richardson and ESPNs early racing schedule:
Just wanted to let you know that the Dr. Richardson/Barbaro feature will be airing on Sat, March 24th during our Lane's End show from 5-6pm ET. We have a preview clip of the feature scheduled to air during our first live remote of the season, the San Felipe show, which kicks off the '07 Racing To The Kentucky Derby series on ESPN/ABC. The San Felipe show is on from 7-8pm ET, Sat, March 17th. The Richardson preview is slated to run during the last segment of this show. Time to get back in the swing and gear up for another exciting season of horse racing on ESPN/ABC. Although, nothing could come close to last year's drama and emotion covering the Barbaro story. Just wish it had had a better ending.

While she had read the book before, three - four times, she had not read the ending before. The following are few of the sound bites from the voice-mail.
It is beautifully stated, beautifully written. The book is so exciting, it's so good ... because it's all about Barbaro ... she (Shelley) had a gift to capture what we all thought of him. It's just a great book. I wanted to express my enthusiasm and love for the book, I am just so pleased with the job she has done.

No, he's not. People use that site to find out names. Put in the year of birth and the dam of any horse, and the name comes up as well as whether or not it was BC-nominated. (Which I'm sure this colt will be - he just won't be eligible to run in it until 2008, when he's of racing age!)

Update 1601: Planning for Barbaro's birthday celebrations at Delaware Park are in full swing, thanks to FOB Sharon Crumb. We are using this page: Barbaro Birthday Celebrations (http://www.timwoolleyracing.com/news/2007/03/barbaro_birthda.php) to keep everyone updated as to what is being planned. Currently a little over 200 FOBs have signed up. If you are planning to attend please alert Sharon as soon as possible (contact on the birthday page). We will have capacity of twice as many as the number signed up by March 20 (I hope that makes sense, currently capacity is 400).
While I was not able to attend the lecture yesterday evening at New Bolton I know that a few FOBs did attend (see Lyn Gilbert's comment, timestamp: 2:21 pm). I had the pleasure of meeting a couple of FOBs at Fair Hill late afternoon and we chatted while Hawty Creek grazed (for a while anyway, then something got her very stired up)! That was fun. I was then to meet Sabina Pierce for an early dinner (and btw, here are her Barbaro pictures, some new ones (http://sabinalouisepierce.com/Barbaro.htm)). We had planned to meet at the Whip, but it was packed (wednesday evening is a steeplechase review night) so we then drove over to a restaurant near New Bolton, Sovona's. I was not too thrilled about this as its a BYOB and we had not brought anything along. Wouldn't you know, when we sat down, next to us was another FOB, who gladly shared their wine. Thanks Carole!

Update 1604: Jeannine Edwards just sent this e-mail that previews ESPNs show on saturday:
For our first show of the season we have the pleasure of seeing last year's Champion 2-Year Old, Street Sense, back in action. He'll be making his '07 debut in the Tampa Bay Derby. On paper, it's a 2-horse race between Street Sense and Any Given Saturday. What Any Given Saturday has in his favor is a prep over the track (the Sam F. Davis) and one race already under his belt this year. He also has more of a stalking style than Street Sense. Post time for the Tampa Bay Derby is 5:45 ET, so this race will be shown on tape delay on our show, which airs from 7-8pm ET (because we are on the West Coast.)
We also have the Rebel Stakes live from Oaklawn Park in Arkansas, post time at 7:06pm ET. This should be an interesting race with Teuflesberg, Flying First Class, Curlin, Xchanger, Officer Rocket, etc. A much more competitive contest than the Tampa race. It'll be fun to see how the two big maiden winners, Flying First Class and Curlin, handle the step up to stakes company. If I had to choose one to make a good accounting of himself I'd pick Curlin. Teuflesberg will have to duplicate his tour de force of the Southwest, but I don't see him going the opening half in :47.4 this time around! It should be a horse race!
Our feature race from Santa Anita is the San Felipe, post time 7:44pm ET. We have a compact field, most likely 5 will start, with Merv Griffin's Cobalt Blue headlining. Cobalt Blue stretches out to 2 turns but has been working tremendously at Hollywood Park for this race. We all know how dangerous Doug O'Neill is these days. We're planning a live interview with Merv before the race, and we'll also talk to Bob Baffert, who trains Air Commander. This son of Baffert's champion Point Given is making his stakes debut off of two impressive wins around two turns here at Santa Anita. This is Baffert's last bullet for the Derby, if he bombs, Bob will have to reload for next year. Todd Pletcher on the other hand, has enough Derby contenders for 5 or 6 trainers. He sends out Grapelli, who will add blinkers for this race. Level Red is another interesting colt who is owned by William Warren, the owner of the late Horse of the Year, Saint Liam.
In the show we'll also have a feature on the Elite Eight Derby Contenders according to Randy Moss and Jerry Bailey, who will be doing the show with Jay Privman and myself. Kenny Mayne joins us on tape with a feature on a charity basketball game between jockeys and eighth-graders. I won't tell you who won the game. :) After our last race wraps up, we'll have a preview of next week's show (the Lane's End at Turfway) and a sneak peak at the Dr. Richardson feature, which will air on that show.... March 24, 5-6pm ET.
We'll try to send some updated notes tomorrow after going out to the barns in the morning and speaking to some trainers on the phone. But right now it's 70 degrees and beautiful out here in Arcadia.... and it's almost time for dinner.

Happy St. Patrick's Day FOB Family! Everyone is Irish today!
What a week it's been.
I've been determined to post regularly, but it seems that time finds a way of getting away from me. Alie has been away all week on vacation (about time... she really needed a break), so I've been flying solo. We had a couple trips to NBC this week for the donor horses and ICU animals. It was nice to see the staff. We miss our daily routine.
So on Monday, I get a call from someone who works with NBC (the network) telling me they are doing a piece on Barbaro and Mrs Jackson told them she should come visit the shop. With Alie away, they were stuck with me. Before I knew it I had a mic taped to me and was being interviewed. Good grief, I can't even remember what I said... hope it made some sense. I was trying to mention every horse cause I could think of, mostly we talked about all of the wonderful FOBs. It's airing on April 29 at 5:00, which I think was posted earlier this week.
Wednesday and Thursday we had the great opportunity to meet a few of the fans that had come for Dr R's lecture. Thank you all for taking the time to stop in the shop. It was a tiny taste of what is to come on April 29th. We are so looking forward to meeting the faces behind the voices we've been talking to all these months.
I spent most of today shovelling out the sidewalks and driveway at the shop, since Alie's hubby, Steve usually takes care of that, I had to bite the bullet and dig. I am looking forward to warm weather. My son has been pestering me to get him on a horse for months now (his enthusiasim for horses has grown these past few months). Alex, you need to hook us up! :)
By the way has Alex mentioned we're auctioning him off for the Relay for Life this week at The Whip?? I sort of roped him into it, but thanks for going along with it Alex. Should be a fun night... Good food, beverages and men... what more could a gal want?? And it's all for a good cause.
Well, I think we're all caught up. Thanks to all who continue to send cards to us and treats to animals and two legged creatures at NBC. I will try to post a little more regularly. Love to you all!

It is the first time Churchill Downs has produced a photographic review of their Derby, and they plan this to be the first of many. They could not have timed that decision better, the pictures are awesome and the captions work nicely. Reading through it (it is a quick read) you also learn a little Derby history; for example the Kentucky Derby is the longest continuously running sporting event in America. Leonard Lusky, the editor for the book, will be on hand at the Barbaro Birthday Celebration at Delaware Park (http://www.timwoolleyracing.com/news/2007/03/barbaro_birthda.php).

I haven't seen the "Barbaro America's Horse" book yet, but I was at Borders over the weekend and got my first chance to see "Barbaro A Nation's Love Story." I pretty much read the whole thing in the store. I can say being on the front lines of the whole Barbaro incident, the Nation's Love Story book was a joke. My BF and I were joking it should be in the fiction section, lol. It was obviously thrown together in a hurry and I don't think they double checked their facts. All in all, I was very disappointed. I hope the other books are better, because I would like to own one.

Ok, althought my guess would be that it will be aired during the Kentucky Derby on May 5th when NBC Sports returns to horse racing. Otherwise no prep races are slated to be aired on any NBC owned network between now the Derby. That's when any piece would have the biggest impact - when fans are watching NBC in search of horse racing/news/updates.

I asked for additional information on the NBC (the network) piece, and Rachael, from Kennett Florist told me this:
Here's what I know. NBC is doing a special on Barbaro. They are airing it on April 29 (obviously for his birthday). They had called the shop after interviewing Mrs Jackson, and her telling them they needed to come talk to us about all the FOBs and our perspective on his stay in Kennett. When they called me to ask if they could come to the shop to interview us, they were at New Bolton Center, so I can only speculate that they interviewed some of the folks there. It will be on NBC 4/28 at 5:00pm... at least that's what the producer who was at the shop told me. Hope that helps!

He was at New Bolton and no doubt getting information ready for stories related to the upcoming triple crown. We talked about the persistant efforts of Fans of Barbaro (by conservative efforts you have raised more than $150,000 and rescued in excess of 300 horses) and the April 29 event we are planning (http://www.timwoolleyracing.com/news/2007/03/barbaro_birthda.php). Update 1656: A great article on Michael Matz: Barbaro memories run strong (http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/more_sports/2007/03/25/2007-03-25_barbaro_memories_run_strong.html), the following is an excerpt:
"About a month ago, we got a letter from a 10-year-old boy from Namibia," Matz said. "He drew a picture of Barbaro jumping. He likes to jump and when he found out I also jumped horses (Matz was a world-class equestrian and an Olympic silver medalist in stadium jumping), he got obsessed with it. He's an orphan and he has AIDS. My wife, Dede, wrote a letter back to him telling him about our six children and that they ride. We heard back that when he got the letter, he was all smiles and he went into another room, under a table, and read it where the other kids couldn't see it.
"The things that this horse has touched in people is just unbelievable."

VB-
I am amazed at how much we have all been touched by a horse we have never met, I was doing better until the other day I watched the video of his Ky win and I balled like it was yesterday then I saw the video of Dr. R. I feel for him, the loss and the feeling that Barbaro trusted him to help him and then the let down. I hope he finds some peace in knowing he is the one that gave us Barbaro for all those months. There is more to this then just a great race horse, he has helped change the face of horse racing......and brought a world of people together that otherwise would have never known each other...
Thank you for the continued updates and thank Alex and everyone else too! FOBs are the best!

I was pleasantly stunned to read the article in Smithsonian, which rarely has anything this topical. The discussion about Barbaro's veterinary condition was cogent and concise. Congrats to all involved, and special congrats for extending the understanding beyond the usual horse related readers.

Update 1657: Jason Shandler wrote a nice article on the Fans of Barbaro: Fans of Barbaro (http://ntra.com/blog.aspx?blogid=8&year=2007&month=3&day=25) as a result of our conversation yesterday. The article ends:
On April 29, Delaware Park, the site of Barbaro's first race, will host Barbaro Day. It will be dedicated to the 2006 Kentucky Derby champ and will also feature a race called the Fans of Barbaro. Brown says, Tampa Bay Downs, Hollywood Park and Lone Star Park will also pay tribute to Barbaro on April 29, which happens to be his birthday.
So far, over 500 FOBs have promised to show up at Delaware Park, from as far away as South Africa. It will be the first time that the special group will have met on a large scale.
"People are going to fly in from all over. It is going to be a terrific event," said Brown. "It just shows what a compassionate group of people can do when they want something. The FOBs goals are to keep a persistent focus on horse welfare issues. It's a good thing."
It sure is.
I may have been a little off on the 500 number, but I am hoping it will be close to that number on the day.

Matz Has New Derby Shot, but Barbaro Memories Remain (http://tcm.bloodhorse.com/viewstory.asp?id=38221), the article concludes:
Peter Brette, Matz's assistant, compares horses to Barbaro all the time.
"You're constantly surrounded by horses, and every time you ride one you just think of him," said the Englishman who exercised Barbaro and now handles Chelokee in the morning. "Obviously, you are going to compare them forever. When we get babies in, you're going to compare them straightaway."
However, he says Barbaro is the horse of a lifetime. "Twenty four years I've been riding, and he was the best. I can't imagine sitting on something as good as him."
"Right now, I'd love nothing more than for this horse to run well and go back to the Kentucky Derby," Matz said of Chelokee. "Whether I have the same shot as I did last year nobody will know. But we're trying."

Update 1677: Jeannine just sent this e-mail from Dubai:
Friday morning was gorgeous here.... the weather has cleared, there was a light breeze, and it wasn't too hot. We went out at 6:15am to get some shots of Collier Hill for my report during the ABC telecast (2:30-4:30pm ET on Sat.) Jockey Dean McKeown was kind enough to stop and pose for us on Collier, although Collier's not too keen on standing still. He looked great galloping on the turf.... he's a 9-year-old with arthritic ankles, but he seemed to travel well. We also saw Invasor, who looks fantastic! I know his trainer, Keiran McLaughlin is extremely happy with his condition right now. He told me the only worry, is not being able to run on Lasix. He said he doesn't really need it, but you never know until they run a taxing race without it whether or not it will be a factor. Lava Man looks super.... it's so cool to see this Cinderella horse all the way over here in Dubai. He has certainly taken his connections on the ride of their lives. What a story he is. Honey Ryder, who's taking on the boys in the Sheema Classic, galloped as good as any horse I've seen out here. Watch out for her!! She took my breath away this morning.
The party last night was breathtaking!!! It was literally in the middle of the desert, in big tents, with pillows to sit on, elaborate buffet stations set up, lots and lots of interesting food, and about 3000 people milling around. We rode camels, held falcons, and watched a fire dancing display before a fantastic fireworks show culminated the evening. His Highness Sheikh Mohammed was there eating, just like the rest of us.
Lo and behold, as I was out walking near the rail just a little while ago (around 8:30am here) I spotted a familiar face, who was looking at me and smiling. It was none other Dr. Richardson! I knew the Jacksons were coming, but didn't know Dr. R. was coming. We hugged and he teased me about "making him look bad on the TV last week..." (referring to the ESPN interview during which he choked up.) I said "Do you know how overwhelming the response to that piece has been?? Do you know how you have endeared yourself to so many with your sentiments in that piece??" He said I was a bully making him cry. Then he said even his wife liked the feature, so it must have been good. We had a nice chat, I introduced him to one of our producers, and he said he was looking for me at the party last night, but with 3000 people milling around, it was kind of hard to find people. Then he said, "But most importantly, how's Jessie doing??" He's more interested in how Jessie's leg is healing than anything. I gave him a status report, she's doing well. He said he will be going to visit Sheikh Mohammed's state of the art Vet Clinic/Hospital here today, and I'm sure we'll see him tomorrow during the races. He seemed relaxed, happy, and said he was blown away by the party last night. It was really good to see him, and I hope he and the Jacksons have a marvelous time here in Dubai.
Hope all is well back in the states! And if any of you are sending notes to Dr. R, be sure to tell him he did NOT look bad in that ESPN feature, quite the contrary, he showed what a remarkably dedicated and compassionate man he is. ( I told him this, but it might sink in better if it comes from some of you guys.)

Today is the Florida Derby ~
The Florida Derby is a major Derby prep, used last year by Barbaro to set himself up for his facile Derby victory. Michael Matz has another contender, Chelokee. Chelokee comes into this race off an allowance win, and while he has no stakes experience, he has looked impressive in his two wins. The Florida Derby includes three of the first four finishers of the Fountain of Youth (NoBiz is going for the Wood Memorial next weekend), Scat Daddy, Stormello (who went back to California and now is back in Florida) and Adore the Gold. Notional also comes in from California. This should be a great race, HRTV will be covering it

Saddle worn by Barbaro in Derby win being sold for charity
Associated Press
http://www.cnn.com/2007/US/04/01/barbaro.saddle.ap/index.html
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The saddle worn by Kentucky Derby champion Barbaro will be sold at a charity auction in May to raise money for permanently disabled jockeys.
Edgar Prado, who used the red-and-white leather saddle to guide Barbaro to a dominating victory in last year's Derby, also used it while winning the 2002 and 2004 Belmont Stakes.
The saddle will be auctioned off at the Mint Jubilee Gala on May 4, the night before this year's Derby.
"Barbaro was one of the greatest horses to ever run the Derby," Prado said. "I only used the saddle for major races."
Prado was aboard Barbaro during last year's Preakness Stakes when the 3-year-old colt broke down in the front stretch after injuring his right hind leg.
Prado's ability to quickly pull up and calm the horse helped doctors immediately address Barbaro's injuries. Barbaro underwent emergency surgery after the race and spent several months in rehabilitation before being euthanized in January following complications from the injury.
Prado donated the saddle to the Jockeys' Guild and proceeds from the sale of the saddle will go to the Permanently Disabled Jockeys Fund, a division of National Thoroughbred Racing Association Charities. There are 58 severely injured jockeys receiving vital assistance each month from the fund.

Chelokee on Kentucky Derby bubble after third-place finish
THanks, Alex~
After a third-place finish in the Florida Derby on Saturday, the chances of Chelokee, right, making the Kentucky Derby field are in doubt.
By Tom Pedulla, USA TODAY
HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. — If Thoroughbred trainer Michael Matz chose to curse his racing luck, no one would blame him. He had the misfortune to watch Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro take a horrible misstep in the early strides of last year's Preakness Stakes and suffer a catastrophic injury to his right hind leg.
Matz has the good fortune this year to work with another promising 3-year-old in Chelokee. But he had the bad luck Saturday of watching as jockey Ramon Dominguez was forced to check the son of Cherokee Run inside just as he was primed to run down eventual winner Scat Daddy in the $1 million Florida Derby.
"Things happen for a reason," the trainer said wistfully after Dominguez told Matz the best horse did not win.
He will never forget Barbaro or the fact the colt was taken away so swiftly. And he might long lament the Florida Derby outcome, for Chelokee's third-place finish accounts for all $100,000 of his graded stakes earnings. If history is an indication, that will leave him approximately $50,000 shy of qualifying for the Kentucky Derby's 20-horse field.
"I don't think third will be good enough to qualify on the graded earnings," Matz said, adding, "We know we're right on the bubble."
Another trainer would be sorely tempted to squeeze in one more start in a graded-stakes race in order to reach Churchill Downs on May 5. Not Matz.
"If we would put another start in him," he said, "what would we have left for the Derby?"
In testing stakes company for the first time after an allowance victory, Chelokee showed he has too much ability to do anything that might set him back.
"That was a big jump up, and we know he can fit with those horses," Matz said. "I'm pleased with him.
"It's a long year. He's getting better with each start

I've been hoping to see Chelokee in the Derby, but have feared he wouldn't make it. Now I guess we just wait and see if the bubble stays intact, or bursts. Not that I think he'd win, but it would just be good to see him there.
Thanks, again, VB, for continuing to keep us up on all of this and working so hard to do so. And to Alex, et all, for continuing the same.

Update 1702: It looks like Circular Quay is skipping the Wod Memorial this weekend and heading straight to the Derby: Circular Quay: A homebred home run (http://drf.com/news/article/83734.html), excerpt:
Tabor and trainer Todd Pletcher were going to send Circular Quay against Nobiz Like Shobiz in Saturday's Grade 1 Wood Memorial at Aqueduct, but on Tuesday night Pletcher said they had decided to skip the Wood and go straight to the Derby.
This is a curious decision, and certainly bucks the trend of needing to run a race within close proximity to the Derby. Much criticism was leveled at Michael Matz last year for having a five week break between Barbaro's final prep and the Derby.

Update 1704: Jay Privman confirms that Circular Quay is to skip the Wood Memorial and train up to the Derby. Any Given Saturday is now pointing for the Wood rather than the Blue Grass Stakes (Street Sense's probable next start): Circular Quay going straight to Derby (http://www.drf.com/news/article/83739.html), excerpt:
Pletcher said his "gut reaction" since the Louisiana Derby was that Circular Quay "needed a little more time." By missing the Wood, though, Circular Quay will come into the Derby off an eight-week layoff. Barbaro won the Derby last year off a five-week layoff.
"I know I'm going against what's stated that you can and can't do," Pletcher said, "but giving horses more time generally has worked best for my horses. Watching him train, I thought it would be best to train him up to the Derby, rather than train him up to a big race like the Wood and come back another four weeks later for the Derby."

Oh VirginiaBred, we all have so much to thank you for keeping this thread going. I know I still go over and light a candle for Barbaro. :)
If the Jackson's do decide to put Barbaro's ashes at a location where visitors can come to pay their respects to the great horse, I'll make sure to make the trip sometime soon. :) But if the Jackson's do decide to place them on Lael Farm, and not want the endless traffic it would entail, I will certainly understand. :)
I know the new guy, Nicantor, has some mightly big shoes to fill. May they fit him well :) and may he go on to produce what Barbaro was destined for but cut down way too early at the beginning of his wonderful career.

Update 1716: NBC (the network) is putting out a documentary on Barbaro: Barbaro: A Nation's Horse. It will air on NBC at 5 pm April 29. Of course I will try to see if we can get TVs at Delaware Park to cover the documentary. You can see the trailer at NBC Sports: click Top Videos: Exclusive Trailer (http://www.nbcsports.com/index.html). The trailer is very good. You can see the picture of the fox hounds that was the inspiration for the name of Barbaro (and now his full brother Nicanor), clips of interviews with Mr. and Mrs. Jackson, Dr. Richardson, Peter Brette and Michael Matz, who gets very emotional. You can also buy the DVD: Barbaro: A Nation's Horse (http://www.barbarodvd.com/) (with a portion of the proceeds to the Barbaro Fund).

A great article on Edgar Prado in Sports Illustrated: The Little Giant: Edgar Prado, who rode the legendary colt Barbaro, is the best rider in the Americas (http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2007/writers/tim_layden/04/05/prado.latino.april/index.html), excerpt:
Horse and rider will be forever linked in racing history, like Secretariat and Ron Turcotte or Seabiscuit and Red Pollard. Yet Prado also embraced the deeper implications of the story. "I was not just a Barbaro lover, I am a horse lover," says Prado. "The best thing that came out of Barbaro's death is that people learned that there are good people in horse racing -- like the Jacksons [Roy and Gretchen, Barbaro's owners] -- who really love horses. They gave Barbaro an opportunity to live, and he showed that he was a champion not only on the track but also off the track."

Update 1727: Mrs. Jackson just called to congratulate Hawty Creek. We had a nice long conversation about Hawty and how cool it was that despite being the oldest maiden in Pennsylvania, she is showing she can run! I also spoke to Peter Brette. Round Pond is being evaluated at Keeneland after her third place finish at the weekend. They identified an issue that they need to have thoroughly checked out before determining her future. Peter also noted that Chelokee was training very well. He is still in Florida but will likely ship up to Keeneland in the next week or so. They will train him as if they were going to run him in the Derby, and will see closer to the time if they can get to run.

The Little Giant
Edgar Prado, who rode the legendary colt Barbaro, is the best rider in the Américas
There was the crowning moment for Edgar Prado: recognition of his high standing in a fiercely competitive and dangerous trade. On the night of Jan. 22, at an opulent Beverly Hills hotel, Prado was awarded a 2006 Eclipse Award as the outstanding jockey in thoroughbred horse racing. He was draped in a black tuxedo, and at 5'3" tall, he towered over the ancient sport.
On this occasion Prado, 39, might have dwelled on the long road that -- like many other riders -- he had traveled to success and wealth: from sharing one bedroom with 10 siblings outside his native Lima, Peru, to scratching out a minimal living in South Florida, to winning races in Maryland and Massachusetts before ascending to racing's major leagues. He might have felt validation that night in Beverly Hills, but instead he felt sadness and guilt.
Five weeks after the presentation Prado sat in the jockeys' quarters at Gulfstream Park in Florida, his hair drenched from a weight-reducing session in the hot box, his taut body wrapped in a brown bathrobe. The feelings had not abated. "I didn't win the Eclipse Award," he said. "Barbaro won the Eclipse Award."
This was the paradox for Prado, one that he will feel every time he looks at the Eclipse trophy in his Florida home. He had been very good in 2006, riding horses to nearly $20 million in purses (second in the nation to Garrett Gomez). But it was his relationship with Barbaro that set Prado apart this year. Together they went into the Kentucky Derby unbeaten and won by a commanding 61D 2 lengths, the Derby's widest winning margin in six decades. "Oh, my God, what kind of horse is this?" Prado asked out loud afterward. Triple Crown whispers, already loud, grew much louder.
Two weeks after Kentucky the picture was entirely different. Prado stood fighting back tears on the sandy loam at the Pimlico race track in Maryland after Barbaro had broken down in the first strides of the Preakness Stakes, his right hind leg shattered at the ankle. In the hours and days following the race, veterinarians would praise Prado for expeditiously bringing Barbaro to a stop and trying to calm him, actions that helped give the horse a chance at survival. Barbaro lived eight months after the Preakness, engaging in a courageous fight that touched fans far beyond the horse racing world. Ravaged by laminitis -- the same degenerative hoof condition that caused the death of the great Secretariat in 1989 -- in his three unbroken limbs, Barbaro was euthanized on the morning of Jan. 29.
"I was completely devastated when I heard the news," says Prado. "He could have been one of the greatest horses ever, but he never got the chance to prove it."

Update 1748: Jeannine Edwards sent this report from Keeneland last night:
..............Oh, and we also saw the Jacksons today after Showing Up's race..... his effort was outstanding..... he broke sharply and was pressed near the lead the entire race, only giving way grudgingly right near the wire. It was an impressive performance off of a 5-month layoff. The Jacksons were proud of him. They had gone to see La Ville Rouge, Barbaro's mom, at Mill Ridge Farm.... they said she looks beautiful! And she's ready to pop! Any day now.... they were hoping it would be last night. :) Gretchen gave us a few comments on the "Brothers' Jackson" (Nicanor and the new foal due any minute) for a feature we are putting together for our KY Derby coverage. We will get footage of the new addition as soon as he enters the world! The Jacksons, Joan, one of producers, and I reminisced about how it was a year ago when we all congregated in that very same paddock, and I interviewed them for the first time, asking them about their promising 3-year-olds.... Barbaro and Showing Up. Showing Up won the Lexington Stakes that, and you know the rest of the story. Gretchen said "It's only been a year since we did that here?? It feels like a lifetime ago....." SO MUCH has happened in the last 12 months, it has been a life-altering experience for many. I knew what she meant..... she didn't need to say another word.

Working through the grief
Ex-Barbaro trainer plots new course sans gifted horse
LEXINGTON, Ky. -- Michael Matz seems a little older this year. That description does not denigrate Matz. At 56, he still appears at least a decade younger than his birth certificate claims. His hips and shoulders are impossibly slim, as if time has spared his equestrian's body; his eyes are still a piercing blue. Maybe it's just the subject matter that has aged him.
"Last year was a hard year, no doubt about that,'' says Matz, as he stands in a cool morning sunlight outside his barn at Keeneland Race Course. Last year, in 15 words: Barbaro. Kentucky Derby romp. Preakness breakdown. Life-saving surgery. Worldwide outpouring of support and, ultimately, grief. If you are a reader who needs more explanation, you wouldn't have started viewing this story in the first place.
Between late April and early June, no fewer than three documentaries will premiere (NBC, HBO and an independent production, "The First Saturday in May,'' which premieres this week at the Tribeca Film Festival in New York) that feature the Barbaro saga as either all or part of their content. In each of these, Matz will earnestly -- and honestly -- pour out his heart, effortlessly playing his role: Grieving Trainer.
It has been exhausting, but Matz has the benefit of sincerity. He loved Barbaro and suffered with him. "There was something about him that will never be forgotten,'' says Matz. "His heart, his fight ... whatever it was. The fact that he never gave up. But people saw something in him.''
Here Matz smiles with lips pursed. That's the way he always smiles, as if holding a little something back. "Of course the racing industry is not going to stop and wait for me to get over him,'' Matz says. "The business is going to go on. Life is going to go on.''
In that vein, Matz has a shot at returning to Churchill Downs on the first Saturday in May. He trains a three-year-old named Chelokee, who finished a hard-luck third in the March 31 Florida Derby (Chelokee was checked in traffic at the quarter-pole and re-started). There is little doubt that Chelokee is among the best three-year-olds in training, but the Kentucky Derby is limited to 20 starters; and if more than 20 enter, the field is determined by earnings in graded stakes races. Chelokee, who earned $100,000 for finishing third in the Florida Derby (his only start in a graded stakes race), is very much on the bubble.
"It's a very funny situation,'' says Matz. "I do think this horse has a very good chance to win if he gets in. I really do. But he has to get in.''
Chelokee talk is a respite for Matz, a chance to be just a trainer again. Barbaro's story has thrust Matz into a position that is unlike almost any thoroughbred trainer in history. Yet the experience is not so new for him. Before he was Barbaro's Famous Trainer, he was an Olympic Medalist and before that he was a Plane Crash Hero, having helped three young children escape from a burning wreckage in 1989 in an Iowa cornfield. Most people are defined once in their life. Matz is at three and counting.
"What happened last year is something that happened,'' says Matz. "It's like the plane crash. It's with you for the rest of your life. What you do with it is up to you. What I'm trying to do with Barbaro is think of the good that came with it, the way he inspired people, the way people cared about him.'' (Fate managed to find Matz at every turn in 2006 and include him in the script; Matz-trained Round Pond won the Breeders Cup Distaff at Churchill Downs, but only after two other horses broke down).
On another level, Matz's attachment to Barbaro's memory is more fundamental. He is a trainer. Barbaro was a great horse. That memory is endlessly long, as well. "What can I do?'' asked Matz. "I can't just give up and say I'll never have another good horse again. I will probably never have another one like him, but then again, not many people do.''
Yet he works most viscerally in an industry of hope. "Every year, the two-year-olds come in, and you say to yourself, 'Is this the one?''' says Matz. "You do your best and you hope one of them develops.''
Chelokee has developed, albeit late. An offspring of the swift Cherokee Run, Chelokee didn't break his maiden until last October and didn't win again until taking a seven-furlong allowance race on the undercard of the March 3 Fountain of Youth Stakes at Gulfstream Park. Four weeks later, he might have been the best horse on the track in the Florida Derby, if not for traffic problems.
His bubble status underscores a weakness in the Derby's graded-stakes tiebreaker. Money earnings are not always analogous to the quality of a horse's performances. Others have suggested that a point system would be more equitable and such a system would also have its flaws; but it is worth exploring. If Chelokee wants in, he should be in.
Of course for Matz, the present and past are seldom far apart. This week, Barbaro's owners, Roy and Gretchen Jackson, came to Kentucky and watched their four-year-old, Showing Up, finish second in the Maker's Mark Mile at Keeneland. They also went with Matz to Mill Ridge Farm to see Barbaro's full brother, the recently named yearling, Nicanor (from the same fouxhouns painting that gave Barbaro his name), and Barbaro's dam, in foal with another full brother.
"The brother looks very nice,'' says Matz. And here came the slight smile again, this time with the scent of hope in the air.

Barbaro Documentary Airs April 29 On NBC
http://racehorsemagazine.com/managearticle.asp?C=140&A=4796
One week before this year's Run for the Roses, NBC Sports will present a one-hour documentary on Barbaro, who took last year's Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I) in dramatic fashion. "Barbaro: A Nation's Horse" will air Sunday, April 29, at 5 p.m. ET.
A special trailer for the program premieres Friday, April 6, on NBCSports.com.
Barbaro captured the hearts of racing fans, animal lovers, and the masses with his stirring Derby win, subsequent breakdown in the Preakness Stakes (gr. I), and then his battle for life before succumbing to the broken leg and laminitis he suffered. The documentary focuses on Barbaro's will to live, and also examines his legacy and impact on the future of horse racing. It includes interviews with Barbaro's owners, Roy and Gretchen Jackson; his trainer Michael Matz; assistant trainer Peter Brette; and Dr. Dean Richardson, his surgeon at the University of Pennsylvania's New Bolton Center.
The show is produced by Emmy Award winner Rob Hyland, with Dick Ebersol serving as executive producer.
DVDs of "Barbaro: A Nation's Horse" will be sold on ExclusivelyEquine.com, with portions of the proceeds benefiting the Barbaro Fund at the New Bolton Center. The fund was created to help in the future care of animals.

Barbaro's Birthday
Keep his spirit alive
Barbaro, the most famous racehorse in recent history, never lost a race in his short career. Although a tragic accident kept this courageous colt from reaching his full potential, he captured the heart and soul of America and the world with his unmitigated spirit and will to live.
Purchase a Barbaro print from Fine Print Collection and you'll be helping to keep Barbaro's spirit alive through the Thoroughbred Charities of America. We have three beautiful prints available: Barbaro and The Unbeaten Barbaro, both by artist John Fawcett, and Barbaro: Kentucky Derby, by artist Christine George.
Celebrate Barbaro's birthday (April 29) by purchasing one of these beautiful portraits for yourself or your favorite Barbaro fan. By doing so you'll help the TCA in their mission "To provide a better life for Thoroughbreds, both during and after their racing careers by supporting retirement, rescue and research and by helping the people who work with them."

wow, you can really see the resemblance in that picture of La Ville Rouge! I can also see the similarities and resemblance in both of Bobby's little brothers. I am anxious to see Nicanor and the new one mature....even if they never make it to the track. They're still something special.
I am also hoping Chelokee makes it to the Derby, though I regret that I don't expect him to win. It would just be really nice to see him get there.
I echo that thanks, VB. You have been tireless in this, and though many of us don't post that often anymore, I'm among those who check in daily. My respect to you!!

FOBs and TWR are mentioned specifically thanks to Alex, so have a read and enjoy the spotlight!

I have a question about Sunday at Delaware. Is there something official going on that we have to be there at a certain time/sign up for etc or is it just a pay your respects type event? Anyone have any specific details?

[QUOTE=FalseImpression;2178355][QUOTE=Sannois;2178112]Someone mentioned a Beanie baby Barbaro. I had not heard about that. anyone know where to find one?
We did get Barbaro Beanies donated for an eBay fundraiser. I had originally planned on listing them last week, ran out of time, and was going to do it this evening - until I heard the news. While it may not be the most financially sound decision right now, it just seems extremely tacky to list them right away. We'll list them, and in the near future, but just now is not the time.
We've now listed these beanies on eBay for anyone who might be interested. We could really use a bidding war right now, we are in the homestretch before our next big fundraiser and things are getting very tight financially. More detailed info is posted here:

There's some press coverage of the Barbaro Celebration in the Philly papers today (http://www.philly.com/dailynews/sports/20070425_DelPark_to_celebrate_memory_of_Barbaro.ht ml;); some of the recent improvements to Delaware Park that will be on display opening weekend are covered here (http://www.delawareonline.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20070425/SPORTS/704250409/1002/SPORTS). There are still no official dropouts from the Derby field so far and Chelokee's current chances of getting in are explained a bit more here (http://www.philly.com/inquirer/sports/20070425_On_Derby_Bubble.html). The only thing we know for certain about the Derby at this point is that the menu for the Queen has been drawn up (http://news.bloodhorse.com/viewstory.asp?id=38581), although I think they are making a mistake by leaving out Derby Pie (http://www.derbypie.com/). There are more details on her visit to Kentucky here (http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/17728208/) - she will likely pay a visit to Lane's End Farm (http://www.lanesend.com/stallions/index.html) as she is good friends with owner Will Farish (who some of my friends met at a deli in Kentucky last week - they were impressed because he seemed to know everyone's name, from the regulars to the staff).

The Kentucky Thoroughbred Owners & Breeders (https://www.kta-ktob.com/index.cfm) have announced that Barbaro is their 2006 Horse of the Year; (http://news.bloodhorse.com/viewstory.asp?id=38598) Bernardini was awarded the top 3-year-old title, but I'm sure all here find this honor for Barbaro long overdue - congrats to all!

I just watched the NBC documentary: Barbaro A Nation's Horse (http://www.barbarodvd.com/). I can only say good things about it, as I wiped tears away on more than one occasion. It is done with taste and dignity, while you hear from many people we have come to know over the last several months on this site (including Rachel at Kennett Florists). Mrs. Jackson was very enthusiastic about the documentary, and I can see why. I will look forward to everyone's reaction to it on sunday. We will be showing it at Delaware Park as part of our day of celebrations. You can also purchase a copy of the DVD from the link above.
I spoke to Mrs. Jackson this morning. She had just visited Barbaro's new baby brother and really loved what she saw, including the similarities she could see with Barbaro (both looks and mannerisms). Mrs. Jackson thinks he may be the largest of the foals at Mill Ridge Farm this year. She also noted that Michael and Peter had both been to visit him. There will be video of him in the near future as many media have visited, ESPN has footage of him when he was only 2 (days old)!

Thanks Alex~ The AP (Dan Gelston) wrote a great story on our pending celebrations this weekend: Fans plan observances for Barbaro birthday (http://hosted.ap.org/dynamic/stories/R/RAC_BARBAROS_BIRTHDAY?SITE=VAROA&SECTION=HOME&TEMPLATE=DEFAULT). Dan is planning to attend the celebrations on Sunday at Delaware. I have made some updates to the schedule of events (http://www.timwoolleyracing.com/news/2007/03/barbaro_birthda.php).

I just got done watching this and had tears in my eyes throughout the entire piece. I'm definitely keeping a box of Puffs next to me on Sunday for the documentary....
I can't believe that 3 months after he was euthanized that I'm still crying about it. I haven't done that since I euthanized my one horse many years ago. Also, I have to turn away when they show him breaking down in the Preakness - I simply cannot watch that.
