Good Morning America had a blurb about Barbaro at 7am. I feel like crying. After all he has been through, it really sucks to have another setback. He is constantly in my prayers.

Those of you who have lived through a devastating situation with their beloved horse and cared and nursed for this creature with all your heart and soul, as the Jackson's and Dr. Richardson and all those involved with Barbaro have, will tell you that when indeed it is time , the horse will let you know. I have been on this awful roller coaster ride and my mare who was fighter and I loved with all my heart told me when it was time to let go. You can see it in their eyes when the fight is up. I don't believe that anyone involved in Barbaro's recovery would have taken this as far as they have if for one moment they saw he was not up for the battle ahead. Some horses have a incredible will to survive. I pray he will continue to fight and indeed if he cannot, trust me , he will let them know it is over. All my prayers for you dear Barbaro and prayers and strength to all those who love and watch over you....
They will let you know. I too went through a tough end with a beloved friend. When he wanted to try and go on, we tried too. In the end, he couldn't fight any more and we let him go. But we wouldn't take him out of the fght when he still wanted to be in it.

"It is not over until it is over."
We must stay strong and pray for Barbaro. He represents to many of us, the courage, bravery, strength and determination that we respect and love in our horses. I've been through trying desparately to save two horses that I loved very much. I lost them. I pray Barbaro makes it...every d@m day...and please realize that while there is life, there is always hope.
The Jacksons and Dr. Richardson are doing their ultimate best for this wonderful horse, lets light some candles and BELIEVE in Miracles.
Group *barba* has 17,594 candles from 67 countries.

Another great article by Dick Jerardi in today's Philadelphia Inquirer---one interesting tidbit is that the new management strategy allows them to soak the hoof:
Fragile Barbaro at risk again
His recovery hits another snag as his support crew tries to remain positive
By DICK JERARDI
jerardd@phillynews.com
KENTUCKY DERBY winner Barbaro's life was in danger from the moment his right rear leg blew apart a few hundred yards into the May 20 Preakness. Even as the months passed after the May 21 surgery to repair the fractures, more surgery to cut away 80 percent of the colt's left rear hoof in July, good days and bad days, the basic prognosis has never changed. Barbaro's life is in danger.
Long term, there are no guarantees because animals react differently than humans and every little thing is complicated. And the complications have complications.
After another surgery on Saturday, Barbaro's right rear foot, which developed a "deep subsolar abscess," is no longer weight bearing and there is a chance that a bone now bearing the weight could fracture.
Roy Jackson, who, along with his wife Gretchen owns Barbaro, said last night that, "I think we're all on the same page. If his quality of life doesn't look good and he's in pain, then we have to make a decision."
That has been the Jacksons' stance from the start. They want to give Barbaro every chance, but will, as Dr. Dean Richardson, the chief of surgery at New Bolton Center, has said on many occasions, "quit" if it is obvious there is no long-term hope or the horse is in pain.
Richardson put out a statement yesterday that explained the surgery was necessary "because we could not keep him comfortable on his right hind foot."
and
"We attempted to manage the right hind foot in a cast and then in a custom fabricated brace but it was impossible to have access to the foot for treatment as well as acceptable stability and comfort. We elected to place his right hind in an external skeletal fixation device in order to provide the foot a chance to heal. This means that two steel pins have been placed transversely through his right hind cannon bone. These pins are connected to external sidebars that in turn are connected to a lightweight alloy foot plate.
"This results in the horse eliminating all weight bearing from the foot; the horse's weight is borne through the pins across his cannon bone. There is significant risk in this approach but we believed it was our only option given the worsening of the right hind foot problem. The major risk of the external skeletal fixation device is that the bone bearing the weight can fracture. Unfortunately, we felt we needed to take this risk because this approach offered our only hope of keeping Barbaro acceptably comfortable."
and
According to Jackson, Barbaro's foot can "now be soaked," to promote healing.
"He had a perfect recovery from anesthesia and has been in and out of the sling since then," Richardson said. "His left hind foot appears to be stable at this time. We remain concerned about both front feet. Remarkably, his attitude and appetite were excellent overnight.
"We will continue to treat Barbaro aggressively as long as he remains bright, alert and eating. This is another significant setback that exemplifies how complex his medical situation remains because both hind limbs have major problems."
and
A week after the cast was applied, Barbaro showed significant discomfort in the foot. The cast was removed. At the time, Richardson called it "a significant setback."
On Jan. 12, Richardson said: "We've got to worry more about his right hind because he's bearing so much more weight on his right hind, getting off his left."
Now, of course, they are dealing with the right hind, just as Richardson feared.
"It's hour by hour, 1 day at a time," Jackson said. "You have bright periods. Then, something comes up."
That is simply the nature of this. There is no straight line to a cure.
"The big thing that people don't understand about these animals although they are noble and great creatures, you can't explain to them that, 'It's OK, we can deal with it and you'll be fine,' " Reid said. "They're much more primitive than us. They only react to pain, swelling... Particularly in a horse like this, people try to put human terms on them and there's no human terms... We can put our feet up. We can lie in a hospital bed. Horses don't react like people react, they only react to direct stimuli."
The issue for Barbaro once again is pain.
"He's nowhere near on as much medication as after he got the laminitis," Jackson said. "Life goes on. You have to not look back and keep a positive attitude."
There are, as Richardson said, unknowns with this latest surgery.
"I don't think Dean knows at all," Jackson said. "We've just got to wait."

As he has been from the very start, Barbaro is in God's hands and all we can do is hope and pray for him. Dr. Richardson and the Jacksons's will do the right thing by Barbaro. He has show such courage and heart through all of this. I have such a sad feeling in my heart and I just hope he will get through this but what we all want is what is best for him so we will just have to wait and see and say lots of prayers...

Update 1400: While I am sure there will be persistant media coverage over the next few days, I did want to alert you that Jeannine Edwards will be on "Outside the Lines" at 3 pm today on ESPN. She will also be on ESPN News following that broadcast.
It was a chilly morning this morning at Fair Hill, bright sunshine, but a wind that made the temperatures pretty low. I ended up getting on six, five of which went to the Tapeta track. I was actually first on the Tapeta track this morning on Hawty Creek. The track continues to be very good despite the weather. Hawty Creek did two turns at a jog / light gallop. I rode Chesapeake City Slew for Tim, and then three more to the track. One of the keys to keeping warm is wearing plenty of layers (I just counted, nine in my case) ... and jogging to and from the racetrack. Anyway, gate day was canceled today due to the weather, I cannot imagine why a gate crew does not want to come out on a lovely day like today and stand around for a few hours!
OK, likely I may head over to New Bolton at some stage today, but lets keep all our thoughts positive for Barbaro!
Update 1399: The AP is reporting Barbaro did not have a great night: Barbaro has another setback (http://sports.yahoo.com/rah/news;_ylt=AhHiTiJ12nKwnhWfxv119iU5nYcB?slug=ap-barbaro&prov=ap&type=lgns). Relevant excerpt:
When asked Monday morning at the New Bolton Center if Barbaro had a good night, Richardson said, "No, not a great night."

19,500 candles lit and burning brightly with the associated prayers, but I have to say I am feeling very uneasy this time. The "tone" from Dr R in the report sounded almost defeated but perhaps that's my fear/dread reading into it.
As mentioned before by others so many of us have been on this roller coaster with our own horses. It's so hard when the ups and downs are this significant.

This is so true. I lost my forever horse to colic last summer. He went from perfectly healthy to being in severe pain in a matter of hours. I knew what the right decision was...he told me himself. You can see it in their eyes - his were lifeless.
I lit another candle for Barbaro and hope he makes it through this.

Couple of points that come to mind-while this is a public forum, most intelligent people agree euthanasia is a choice the owner makes with his vet, and is largely dependent on owners bank account and horse's level of comfort etc. I think if anyone honestly thinks this horse is not receiving proper care and is actually 'in pain' they are mistaken. Also, a horse in pain and wanting to go is obvious, it doesn't need a debate to identify a horse in pain, it is obvious. His owners and vet will know IMMEDIATELY when that point is reached. Until then it is a private matter and it is beyond shameful to second guess the decision making of these people- obviously in pain themselves.

Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro euthanized
Barbaro, winner of the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (G1) whose battle to overcome injuries suffered in the Preakness Stakes (G1) attracted worldwide attention and a legion of fans, was euthanized on Monday morning at the University of Pennsylvania’s New Bolton Center.
Gretchen Jackson, who owned and bred the Dynaformer colt along with her husband, Roy, said that Barbaro’s front feet were beginning to become affected by the limited ability of both his laminitic left hind foot and his fused right limb that was shattered in the Preakness Stakes to bear weight.
The decision was made early Monday after consulting with Dean Richardson, D.V.M., chief surgeon at the University of Pennsylvania’s veterinary school.
“There was not a foot that was not affected,” Gretchen Jackson said. “He just would not lie down. He had not layed down for two days now. That can’t be good for him. He’s got to get the weight off of his feet. They were bringing him in and out of the sling, but his front feet were showing signs of laminitic changes and we just thought rather than put him through any more else. He had been good up to the beginning of this month, and then everything went.”
Barbaro, who became the sixth undefeated Derby winner in history when he won the 2006 Derby by 6 1/2 lengths, demonstrated considerable discomfort on his right hind foot over the weekend and underwent surgery to insert two pins in his right hind cannon bone in an effort to eliminate all weight bearing from the right foot on Saturday. The procedure was described as a last ditch effort to keep Barbaro comfortable enough to continue his recovery.
“Dean said, ‘The good stuff takes a long time, and the bad goes fast,’ “ Gretchen Jackson said. “That seems like that’s what it was, it went really fast. We all are really, really confident that he didn’t suffer. We know that he was pain free and we just didn’t ever want to see him…it’s an issue of pain and quality of life. If it’s not going to happen, it’s just not going to happen. We just owed it to him to give him the best.”

Barbaro Euthanized After Lengthy Battle
'It was goiong to be difficult for him to go on without pain, co-owner says'
PHILADELPHIA - Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro was euthanized Monday after complications from his breakdown at the Preakness last May.“We just reached a point where it was going to be difficult for him to go on without pain,” co-owner Roy Jackson said. “It was the right decision, it was the right thing to do. We said all along if there was a situation where it would become more difficult for him then it would be time.”
Roy and Gretchen Jackson were with Barbaro on Monday morning, with the owners making the decision in consultation with chief surgeon Dean Richardson.
It was a series of complications, including laminitis in the left rear hoof and a recent abscess in the right rear hoof, that proved to be too much for the gallant colt, whose breakdown brought an outpouring of support across the country.
“I would say thank you for everything, and all your thoughts and prayers over the last eight months or so,” Jackson said to Barbaro’s fans.

He was so close not long ago to overcoming this. There is not a person alive that can deny the courage this horse showed and the inspiration he has given to everyone. I think the owners and vets also showed great conviction amongst a TON of criticism and deserve praise for what they did for this horse and horses in the future that will unfortunately have severe injuries as well. From this experience, hopefully more will be able to be saved and more people will give injured racehorses a shot at life.
I think Barbaro gave everyone a chance to learn from him in one way or another......
wish it could have had a different ending though.

..........................Owners Roy and Gretchen Jackson were with Barbaro on Monday morning, with the owners making the decision in consultation with chief surgeon Dean Richardson.
and
The classic winner suffered a significant setback over the weekend, and surgery was required to insert two steel pins in a bone - one of three shattered eight months ago in the Preakness but now healthy - to eliminate all weight bearing on the ailing right rear foot.
The procedure on Saturday was a risky one, because it transfered more weight to the leg while the foot rests on the ground bearing no weight.
The leg was on the mend until the abscess began causing discomfort last week. Until then, the major concern was Barbaro's left rear leg, which developed laminitis in July, and 80 percent of the hoof was removed.
Richardson said Monday morning that Barbaro did not have a good night.

Very well said.
Barbaro, may you rest in peace

Thank the heavens that everyone involved with this noble horse allowed him to go over The Bridge with the same friendship, loyalty, dignity and grace that he displayed throughout his life.
Bobby brought out a lot of the best in humanity.
His tragedy has probably brought more resulting good for more horses than nearly any other contemporary horse's triumphs--even including his own.
godspeed, Bobby.

Tears of joy that he doesn't have to face another single minute of pain. It should have been done many months ago.

Let it go for gods sake. It amazes me that you think you know more than Michael Matz and the professionals at New Bolton. Sheesh. The horse is gone, and so is the debate.

Ya know, Too Simple, it really isn't nor ever was about you or your frickin' opinion.
It was about a horse we all admired, for his incredible strength and especially the temperament to easily tolerate and attempt to mend from things that would have killed most other horses long ago. Barbaro was an exceptional horse. My sympathies, gratitude and respect to his owners and all his various caregivers.

Reese - well said.
From one of those "author unkown" poems:
If it should be, that I grow frail and weak
And pain should keep me from my peaceful sleep,
Then you must do what must be done
For this, the last battle, can't be won.
Don't let your grief stay your hand,
For this day more than all the rest,
Your love and friendship stand the test.
Thanks for this post.
For those who keep insisting on using this such a sad day to project your on going opnions. Remember wether right or wrong those that knew and loved him did what they felt best. They saw him everyday and they alone had the right to make those decsions.
Love has no fine line between to little and to much. Love for someone is just that.

Actually, I hope that they don't. I like the thought of a private place where they can go. After all, he was THEIR horse. They don't need a place they're going to constantly have to maintain and clean from countless bouquets and tchotkes and cards and notes people will leave. There's dignity in privacy. Thank you to Barbaro - for being - brilliant, tough, smart. I have your Derby win on home video as I was at Churchill Downs and had money on you. The notion of what was best for Barbaro is split far more closely than just on our forum but the reality remains everyone wants what is best for him. I have always said trust the people closest to him, cause they likely know best.
Just to let you know how rapid this came on - I spent last week with Vintage Farms and when I left on Saturday evening I had heard nothing about the situation being so dire.
It was a fabulous week, and I heard many fabulous stories about this great horse - racing was robbed when he twisted his ankle at Pimlico. I just hope his little brother can finish the families unfinished business.

Thank you VB and Alex.
I'm one of the thousands now sitting in tears over the loss of a horse I never met.
But WHAT a HORSE! In his short life, not only was he a superior race horse, winning every meet he tried, but he spoke to humans like few horses have ever done. He showed us the great equine spirit, the great intelligence and the great nobility that most of our race had no idea existed in such creatures. His legacy is in veterinary advances and possibilities; in improved track footing; in the involvement that many people now feel with horses. As long as we live, he'll be remembered.
When I awoke this morning, I closed my eyes again and considered that today might be Barbaro's last, which made me sad. But then I had a vision of him running, just for the hell of it, beside a big red horse, who I thought was probably Secretariat.
My condolences to the Jacksons, Edgar Prado, Michael Matz, Peter Brettz, Dr. Richardson, and all of us who love him.

You fought until you had had enough...Condolences to the Jacksons and all the fabulous people who gave their very best to keep Bobby comfortable and content these last weeks. There are many people out there who would chide "why such a big deal? He was JUST a horse..." Just a horse INDEED! He captured the hearts and imaginations of millions of people world wide, first because of his amazing strength and speed on the racecourse, and secondly for his tremendous courage and will to survive while at New Bolton. If we, as humankind, could show even a minute ioata of the courage and perseverance that this great horse possessed, the world would indeed be a MUCH greater place.
To VirginiaBred and all the others who so steadfastly and loyally kept us up to date on Barbaro's condition, my heartfelt thanks. On the morning of Jan. 29, Dr. Dean W. Richardson, head of surgery at New Bolton Medical Center, made the somber announcement most everyone had been prepared to hear more than eight months earlier. Barbaro had been euthanized. The wave of grief that was anticipated back then now came swiftly and unexpectedly.
After so many months of hope and high expectations, Barbaro’s fight for life and the miracle story he had written were over. There would be no happy ending to this fairy tale. One did not have to hear Richardson’s words to know they were as heavy as the millions of hearts around the world that had embraced Barbaro and his struggle to survive against all odds.
What made the news of Barbaro’s death even harder to accept was that only a month earlier, talk had begun about the colt’s possible release from New Bolton. When Richardson, although still guarded, said that Barbaro’s release could come in the “not so distant future,” it brought a wave of elation and optimism. The horse was happy, eating, and enjoying his daily walks and grazing sessions. Christmas brought a deluge of cards and gifts to New Bolton, and spirits were high.
Then, virtually overnight, the colt suffered a “significant setback” when some new separation of the hoof was found requiring additional removal of tissue, and a pall once again hung over the Kennett Square clinic, as it did back in May and again in July when Barbaro developed a severe case of laminitis that would ultimately lead to his death.
Following surgery to remove more of the left hind hoof, Barbaro “improved significantly” and the crisis appeared to have been averted. But it was soon followed by another when a “deep subsolar abscess” developed on the colt’s right hind foot, which necessitated yet another surgical procedure on Jan. 27, in which two steel pins were placed through the cannon bone to support an external skeletal fixation, which would eliminate all weight bearing on the foot and give it a chance to heal. Barbaro, despite being placed under anesthesia well over a dozen times since his arrival at New Bolton, remarkably came out of this latest complex and risky procedure eating and in good spirits.
But this time Barbaro was beyond all hope, and Dr. Richardson and owners Roy and Gretchen Jackson were forced to come to the realization that they had run out of miracles.
Having witnessed live the shocking breakdown of Ruffian and the horrific spills of Go For Wand and Pine Island, it is difficult to come to terms with the question: which is worse, watching the quick, relatively painless deaths of those magnificent fillies or riding the roller coaster of emotions that continued for more than eight months with Barbaro, ultimately leading to the same fate?
The answer, at least in Barbaro’s case, is the latter. The colt proved that greatness does not have to be achieved on the racetrack. His incredible will and indefatigable nature kept him alive long enough to show the world just how much emotion is capable of pouring out of one’s heart for a Thoroughbred racehorse, and how far the field of veterinary medicine has come. He made a hero out of an unknown veterinarian, whose dedication, wit, and wisdom turned him into a James Herriot-like figure to millions of people.
Rather than dwell on the outcome, it is best to concentrate on the heroic efforts that were made to save a horse that lived eight months longer than he should have. It was not disease or injury that ended Barbaro’s life, it was recovery. If there is a flaw in nature’s power of healing, it is that it cannot be applied to the Thoroughbred, to whom the words stationary and prone do not co-exist. Infused with the fiery blood of its ancestors, the Thoroughbred’s impetuous nature sadly is in constant conflict with its fragile legs, and it is that nature that often leads to its demise.
Although Barbaro had to endure a great deal of physical and mental anguish, he also experienced the ultimate in human kindness and compassion, while being pampered like the noblest of kings. And he leaves behind a legacy that far transcends his stunning victory in the Kentucky Derby.
Like everyone else, I was prepared to bid a tearful goodbye to Barbaro immediately following the Preakness, and then again in July when laminitis appeared. I was prepared yet again in early and then late January. I no longer have to prepare for the worst. After eight months, during which time the horse’s struggle made national headlines around the world, Barbaro’s ordeal finally is over.
Cervantes said, “The guts carry the feet, not the feet the guts.” Barbaro’s guts carried his feet to victory after victory. But it carried his heart a lot farther.

I'm so very sorry to see this news. Barbaro was, to put it mildly, a truly amazing horse. How sad that so often, the brightest lights seem to burn the fastest. Godspeed to him, and best wishes and hugs to his owners, vets, and caretakers. It was difficult having others at my barn second-guess my timing of euthanizing my own horse; I can only imagine how difficult it must be to have the entire country doing so.

Godspeed to you Barbaro--as I said when Gem Twist passed, your greatest gift to us is that we got to SEE you in our lifetimes. I watched you win the Derby, and I watched you prance into the Preakness. I didn't have to hear stories or watch old film or even read a book about you.
We are blessed to have seen this champion in our lifetimes--I have spoken to people who watched Ruffian, Seabiscuit, Slew, Secretariat, and even Big Red himself--there is a tone of awe and wonder when these Thoroughbreds and their races are regaled. We can be Barbaro's regalers--we saw him, we screamed and cheered and jumped up and down and rallied him to the finish line at the Derby, we fought and prayed and pleaded with him to hold on and to fight and heal, and we cried and mourned his passing even as the horsemen in us agreed with and were glad for the courage and honor his owners showed in sending him to his final peace.
So thank you Bobby--because we "knew" you, we will go on in this life a little more blessed and the future generations will know who you are--this we promise to you.

Thank you, Team Barbaro, for letting us in on the details, the day to day, the good and the bad. Now get some rest-while you can... there's more horses to race, to love, to cheer on, to cry over. That's horses. That's what they do.

God speed to you Barbaro. :) May you graze on all the wonderful green grass and have some fun races with your newfound friends across the Rainbow Bridge. Your 'family' here are all mourning the loss of your last race that we know you tried so hard to win. If all the candles that we had lit would have helped, you'd be the winningest horse in history! We loved you, we pulled for you, we prayed for you!
God bless your owners, the Jackson's, your veterinarian, Dr. Dean Richardson, your trainer, Michael Matz and his assistant, Peter, and your jockey, Edgar Prado, and everyone else that had a hand in helping you these last 8 months for doing everything for you that possibly could be done. :)
You taught a lot of people a lot of things. Your courage and your heart exemplify everything that thoroughbreds stand for! :)
VirginiaBred and Alex, may I extend to you and some others many, many, many thanks for all the wonderful updates from day one about Barbaro. It allowed us to come to one spot and find continuous updates and hope.

ts you are an ignorant, obnoxious, overbearing, insufferable and heartless pig.
Not the right call to come off like you did on these sad developments. I hope the owners can somehow be spared your holier than thou venom. Maybe you should make your own decisions with your own animals, and keep cruel, thoughtless and grandstanding opinions to yourself. You're about as far away from the situation as anyone other than the owners and NB.
It seems as if they acted as they said they would, when and if the time came. He fought the good fight, my guess is that he let them know.
Nothing like kicking someone when they are down...or dead.

Actually, I hope that they don't. I like the thought of a private place where they can go. After all, he was THEIR horse. They don't need a place they're going to constantly have to maintain and clean from countless bouquets and tchotkes and cards and notes people will leave. There's dignity in privacy. These poor people have had the spotlight glaring on them for months (just look at some of the comments and articles and diagnoses by wannabe know-it-alls). They deserve their peace and privacy.
When it looked like would make it Mrs. Jackson said he was America's Horse and she wanted him to go somewhere where his fans could visit him (which was not feasible on their farm). I would think maybe they would feel the same about his final resting place. I hope it will be at the KY Horse Park or maybe Churchill Downs so everyone that loved him could have a chance to pay their respects many many years down the road. But of course it is up to them.

I was just leaving my own horse who is suffering from an abscess and heading back to the office when I heard the news.
I was at the Preakness that day and saw everything first hand. I hurt so bad right now, and I can't even IMAGINE what kind of pain the Jacksons and the medial staff at U of P are feeling right now. My prayers are with them during this very difficult time.
Barbaro optimized why I love Thoroughbreds so much. His heart and class were unmatched, and his will to win (on the track and in life) is something to revere. It breaks my heart the story ended this way. It's not the way I would have written it, but as I'm always reminded in life - God's ways are not our ways. I guess he decided it was time to bring Barbaro home where he belongs. I'm grateful as a fan to have seen Barbaro in person and that God shared him with all of us for the brief time that he did.
V.B. - thank you so much for the many updates you provided us. I so appreciate all your hard work.

Though I haven't posted on this forum for many months, I just heard the news and had to come here first to share in the collective grief. My first thoughts of such a special horse bring tears to my eyes, as i think of the pain all his loved ones are going through. Yet a moment later, I start thinking I shouldn't cry... he was such a miracle of a creature and part of me feels no one should cry for such a champion, such a triumph of heart and spirit over the conifnes of fragile physical life. Surely wherever that spirit is now it's flying, and would hesitate in confusion to see us grieve. Without sounding too corny, let's all try to celebrate the wonderful creature that Barbaro was, and take heart in the love and solidarity that such an animal can inspire. THANK YOU Barbaro... Thank you to everyone who displayed such a winning spirit in such trying times. It's given us all a lesson in the true meaning of grace, dignity and courage.

I read this poem when I lost my beloved dog and best friend Cassie six years ago, I thought it said eveyrthing then, and it says everything now.
God saw you were getting tired
and it was not meant to be.
So he put his arms around you
and whispered "come to me"
With tearful eyes we watched you
and saw you pass away.
Although we loved you dearly
we could not make you stay.
A golden heart stopped beating
hard working hooves put to rest.
God broke our hearts to prove to us
he only takes the best!
A million times we've needed you
and a million times we've cried.
If love alone could have saved you,
you never would have died.
A heart of gold stopped beating;
Two fighting eyes closed to rest.
God broke our hearts to prove to us
he only takes the best.

I think an incredible amount of learning could be gained by veterinary and podiatry students. Many horse owners donate legs to research so that other horses can be helped or saved from knowledge gained. I myself learned a tremendous amount from examining cadaver legs from a poor mare that foundered and went to her eternal rest. Several of us learned a lot from that one little mare. I think much could be learned from Barbaro.
He had more good days than he did bad.
He had 8 more months of life, He lived to be four years old (which is a long time when you are only three)
He got more attention and treats in those 8 months than most horses do in a lifetime.
The owners did the right thing.

I grieve with his owners, trainers, handlers, those who knew him, the medical staff who cared for him and all of us who checked this thread once, twice, multiple times a day. He has done so much for all of us, for our horses, for those to come, and especially for those of his breed who were "thrown away" following career ending injury. He may possibly be the cause of a national ban on horse slaughter. He may be greater now than any other horse in memory -- deservedly so.

Look Two SImple, people on this thread have mostly come here, gathered here and stayed here to express thir thoughts and condolences. You don't have to agree with them, but sometimes there comes a moment to exercise this strange thing you seem to have little familiarity with. It's called "tact". So even though you might heartily disagree, what say you dig deep down, summon some tact, and leave people alone to express their condolences in peace, mmkay? It's just a nice thing to do and this seems like a fine time for some kindness, don't you think?
And the rest of you making sniping comments back to Two Simple? Knock it off as well.

I had hoped that veterinary medicine would be advanced enough to save Barbaro, not just for him but for the others who may come along with this same injury. All I can hope for is that one day they make enough breakthroughs in laminitis research to finally find some useful ways to combat or even prevent it.
My heart goes out to the people who were so involved for so long in this battle, and of course to Barbaro for all that he endured with dignity. I had such high hopes of getting to see another Triple Crown winner. Watching this year's Derby is going to be rough.

Like most of you, I am sitting here in tears... don’t know how the news will spin this story... my feelings: Barbaro had heart… his owners and the medical team around him had heart. They tried their very best… and almost pulled off a miracle. They put their heart and soul into the effort... and that is as much as any of us can do. Hopefully veterinary medical science has learned a great deal from the experience, so his treatment was not in vain… not remotely in vain.
This was a remarkable effort. I make no judgment about whether it was right or wrong, except this: IF they had succeeded (which they almost did), they would all be heroes. It takes courage to try, courage to take the risk with such a high-profile chance for failure. I applaud the courage of the owners and the medical team. And I admire their ultimate compassion and wisdom to make the right decision for Barbaro when the time came.

The Live New Bolton Update was one of the hardest thing I've ever had to watch.
Dr. Dean Richardson and Mrs. Jackson's tears, and her husband struggling to keep his voice even, showed the deep committment and love they had for this brave stallion.

Link please?
It was on ESPN at the news conference. It was a short conference and they cut out before the questions were finished. Even Dr. Richardson stopped a few times to compose himself so as not to cry on national TV. But he also kept his sense of humor intact.
When asked what made Barbaro stand out more than other patients (paraphrased, of course), he answered "He was good looking."

They will re-run the Press Conference on ESPN, CNN and MSNBC. It will be on all the National Nightly News station as well.

It is a sad day.
I do not think it is fair for people to make any judgements as to what should or should not have been done, as we were not there.
I do believe that the Jacksons loved Barbaro very much, and did what they believed was right.
My heart goes out to all who knew and loved this gallant horse.
In the words of Stanley Harrison:
Somewhere, somewhere, in time's own space
There must be some sweet pastured place
Where creeks sing on and tall trees grow
Some Paradise where horses go.
For by the love that guides my pen,
I know great horses live again.
RIP Barbaro - give Timely Writer a nicker for me. :(

I was able to listen to a 3 minute freebie of the audio. Does anyone know if the entire press conference will be available online someplace?

...and then Barbaro lays down, rolls his way out of his earth suit and canters away.

I had checked this thread first thing this a.m. as I have for the past many months (thanks from the bottom of my heart, VirginiaBred and Alex), and hoped we were having just another bump in the long road. Then I had to leave my office.
Unfortunately, a business colleague who had just seen the CNN report gave me the devastating news in a very matter of fact, conversational manner as we were walking into a business meeting. It was difficult to maintain a professional demeanor, as I was totally unprepared.
RIP, Barbaro. My heart goes out to all of Barbaro's connections.

ABC had a online live feed of the entire press conference -- it just ended but may be available at their site.

May this be the proverbial nail in Racing's coffin.
This cruel sport has, pardon the pun, run it's course.
You want to run like hell and break down your own body.....have at it. You want to run a young, innocent animal into the grave for selfish monetary gain, as far as I am concerned there is a special place in hell reserved for those who do.

They just showed it on TVG and are now having a discussion on Barbaro's amazing life.
The pain in the voices of Dr. Richardson and the Jackson's was almost too much. Barbaro exemplified the best of class, courage, determination, and heroism all of which have enveloped those closest to him. That was obvious today in the press conference.
After Lost in the Fog died I remember thinking how thankful I was to live during the time that he was running and see greatness that I will always remember. I feel that way even more so today, I am glad to have gone on this ride with the champion Barbaro.
My heartfelt thanks to all who have kept this thread updated. We can all learn from Barbaro and his connections and I am so thankful that they chose to share him with us.

I know alot of us wished he could live to sire little Barbaros and be happy, but I know that he could never have the quality of life he could have here on earth. Though I am deeply saddened by his death, I know he is in a better place now, somewhere where he can once again gallop as he did that day in Kentucky. The restriants of earth and gravity must no longer affect him, and he can now run like he never could before. I'm sure he's up there frolicking with the likes of Man O' War or Secretariat - at least I hope so.
His will to go on despite adversity served as a daily inspiration to me during these long months. I will never forget these past months I had experiencing all his triumphs and pain. He will remain in my heart forever. The racing world has lost a true champion today, one who proved his heart both on and off the track, and he will be remembered forever.

Like so many others I've checked in here daily but being at work had little time to post. Right now I just want to go hug my horse but between working late and snow squalls that probably won't happen until Wednesday. I guess tonight I'll have to cry into a little poodle's neck. V.B., you have put so much heart and soul into this; keeping everyone updated and taking some flack along the way. You must be exhausted, too. Thank you hardly seems adequate, but thank you so much for helping us all to be part of this very special community of Bobby's admirers.
"This was a remarkable effort. "
Cartier: I hope you don't mind one correction - While the outcome wasn't what we all hoped and prayed for - they are heroes.

I am so sad for him, and why did it have to happen on my birthday. He is no longer suffering and they did what was in his best interest but he had so much heart. I saw him at NB ((when we took my older stallion up for collection last year)) Bobby was a very cool horse, looked at you as if to say "hey, whats up! come hang out a while" - he will be widely missed. RIP - Condolences

on a sidenote....I looked on Ebay just to see what merchandise was doing. Breyer models are going for $300 or more!!! Holy crap!
Personally, I believe this will strengthen racing. It shows owners aren't the money-hungry and uncaring people they have been thought of. And Barbaro showed the true grit and determination that are at the heart of a Thoroughbred.
