View Full Version : Straight from the insider's.. Barbaro had another good night!! Up and At 'em!!!!
Xctrygirl
May. 21, 2006, 10:58 AM
All of this news came straight from people who work for Mr. Matz:
1.) Michael is doing extremely well. He is thinking positive but was on the track today at Fair Hill and onlookers report that he was in as good a mood or better than you would ahve expected.
2.) Lots of good news from New Bolton. Barbaro manged to both lay down and get up under his own power. He has eaten as well.
3.) There are no signs of shock and his laidback demeanor is so far serving him well
More than that I cannot comment. But the speculation of both people at Delaware and Fair Hill is that the scales are tipping to the good sides.
There was a report, though I cannot confirm it, that while Dr. Richardson is being flown back from a vacation in Florida to do the surgery, another one of the premier surgeons was in the area yesterday and will be scrubbing in as well. Again, this is not confirmed.
Keep those chains jingling!!!

That sounds very hopeful, thank you! But one thing...I don't know why I thought this...but wouldn't Barbaro have been in a sling to take some of the weight off his leg? I'm sorta surprised to read that he's getting up and down, but it sounds very very good that he can do that! :)

Safehorses,
As it was described to me the normalcy of life is important. Slings are used under circumstances that absolutely need it. Obviously if he didn't have it, it can be inferred that the dr's believed he didn't need it.
And a horses health in a sling is a dicey thing. Depression can set in and then it gets harder to heal. (Again, what was told to me when I asked the same thing)

What heart and determination Barbaro possesses and it's great to hear encouraging news. Thanks very much for sharing this information as obviously, there are many, many kind, concerned people out there who care very much. Godspeed.

xctrygirl -
thanks so much for the updates!
i also wanted to say thanks for the photos and news yesterday. I mentioned in the thread in the H/J board - my uncle is the equine ambulance driver at Pimlico, and he drove Barbaro to NB. Thanks for noticing that the ambulance was being so careful - I'm sure he did his best to keep Barbaro safe and to travel quickly!
I bookmarked your photos of the ambulance on the road. I'm hoping the story ends as well as is possible, and I can share the photos with my uncle as he remembers the day he helped take care of an amazing horse!
Keep the updates coming - thanks again!

Tullio,
Your Uncle ranks very very high in my book right now!!!!
Ok so over on the Final Turn Forums, (www.finalturn.com) they're saying that the surgery has started. That Jeanine Edwards cut in on the current ESPN broadcast and announced it was about to start. Over there the thought is it will last about 2 hours. This morning at Del. and on the Tv braodcasts, we were hearing closer to 6 hours.
I'd prefer 3 hours, but honestly if he gets through it, I don't give a rats butt how long it lasts!!! ;)

KENNETT SQUARE, Pa. (AP) - Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro went into surgery Sunday to determine the extent of "life-threatening injuries" after the colt broke three bones above and below his right rear ankle at the start of the Preakness Stakes.
The surgery was being performed by Dr. Dean Richardson at the University of Pennsylvania's New Bolton Center for Large Animals. He said the operation could take several hours.
Richardson, the chief of surgery for the center, said the injuries were "very, very serious," and that he's never worked on so many catastrophic injuries to one horse.
"You do not see this severe injury frequently because the fact is most horses that suffer this typically are put down on the race track," Richardson said. "This is rare."
"It's about as bad as it could be," he added. "The main thing going for the horse is a report that his skin was not broken at the time of injury. It's a testament to the care given to the team of doctors on the track and (jockey) Mr. Prado on the racetrack."
Richardson said Barbaro sustained a broken cannon bone above the ankle, a broken sesamoid bone behind the ankle and a broken long pastern bone below the ankle. The fetlock joint, the ankle, was dislocated.
"The aspects of the surgery will be dictated slightly by what we find," Richardson said. "But the bottom line is we will attempt to perform a fusion of that joint and to stabilize it and make it comfortable enough for him to walk on."

The fact that the surgery is still going on is a good sign. If the blood flow was comprimised I would think they would have euthanized him. Lets keep hoping he will come out of this ok.

TVG on the phone with Deidre Biles of the Blood Horse. She is at NB.
Recovery will occur in the pool
Surgery going on 2 hours... all agree this is good news since if it was a no way scenario he'd be out and ...*cough* by now.
Surgery will last for a while.
Vets being frank, but its a very serious surgery. They will try very hard, but vets say "Its about as bad as you will see"
Press conference after.

My old Hanoverian broodmare had broken her leg as a very young mare, and the joint was fused. She lived until 24, and had many babies. She walked about 95% sound, definitely off at trot and canter, but it didn't slow her down at all. Occasionally when cantering, she would just pick it up and run on 3 legs, but she was pretty comfortable using it most of the time. I do believe she could have performed to breed had she been a stallion. The big worry was always that her good leg would stay sound, and it never had a problem. Hope they have as much success with this surgery.

Posting here as well:
I haven't been able to go through posts so apologies if repeating things....
we were in & just outside of his stall after he was unloaded from ambo. Also watched as his digitals came up. P1 was in a lot of pieces but what a super wonderful patient & trying his best to accomodate all handling him as well as being so veryvery good while having robert jones put on (exceptional job on a most difficult bandage, btw). Most horses, especially after being pulled up so short & pumped would be a mess & hind leg injuries usually come w/ a good deal of kicking. This horse made you want to melt because of his keen attention to those nearest & desire to do what was right.
A big problem/concern with his type of injuries has to do w/ vascular flow.....only two relatively small veins feed the entire hoof so any compromise to those and the foot gets lost w/ infection starting there (moving up leg as well) being factor.
I'm guessing they would hope for some external fixation & fusion of that area without any vascular damage.
It's unfortunately not a good prognosis but having such a terrific patient is a very needed part of any recovery.
BTW: His owners expressed over & over that HIS comfort & life quality was their main concern. Very nice people.

I should have said in above post that this was not at hospital but at his stall at Pimlico just after breaking down.
We perched on ambo drivers stand (wich turns into a mixed media loft on big days).... It is up high & just behind starting gate. He jogged back & reloaded, by all appearances, fine. If Edgar felt anything he certainly didn't give it credit & nothing was visable to the docs watching at ground level. I would imagine Edgar didn't sleep last night going over things repeatedly. You don't see a lot of hind leg injuries on dirt, & they most always happen from a mis-step (obviously disregarding contact w/ another horse & the like).

Thank you to everyone who is keeping all of us updated! I live in San Antonio and they had the most horrific picture of another horse at the track here with two broken legs, on the font page of the paper this morning. I started crying in Starbucks!

Well that press conference was a lot of ado about nothing. No real new info except that he's still in surgery.
Yikes, they gave him odds of 50/50 for survival.
Actually those are pretty good odds. Better than I would have thought. But I think that's just for him getting through surgery. There's the recovery from anesthesia, then attempting to stand, then the long time while the injury heals which can lead to complications like founder and colic.
I think he has a good team of people helping him and it sounds like he's mentally a horse that allows people to help him, so jingles/good vibes/prayers that it works out for the best for him.

Ok guys sorry it took so long. Here's the 5:10 No Update, update transcript:
Talking Head: “Right now we are joined by Espn’s Jeanine Edwards’s at the University of Pennsylvania that’s the site of the surgery today on Barbaro. Jeanine what’s up?”
JE: “Well right now it’s a few mins after 5 and Barbaro is still in surgery we have no updates at this point he has been in surgery since around 1 o’clock this afternoon now they did tell us before the surgery that it was expected to tae several hours, 4-5 hours. So right now we are thinking that he is in the tail end of his surgery. And I think its obviously a good sign that Barbaro is still in surgery because if the leg had appeared to be irreparable once they went in there, we probably would have heard something by now because they probably would have pulled the plug at that point. But right now they are still working to repair his leg.”
Talking head: “Jeanine how does something like happen? Breaking an ankle so severely?”
JE: “Well its just one of those things that happens that you’ll never be able to explain. The horse was coming up to the race perfectly, uh by all accounts he was doing as good as he could possibly do. And its just one of those freak things where you might take a bad step or just the torque or there’s really no way to explain it but by all accounts he was coming up to the race as well as he could have uh but this is a type of injury you don’t see that often, especially on a hind leg and Dr. Dean Richardson, who is the chief of surgery here at the University of Pennsylvania, he described the nature of the injury and was very realistic in his opinion of what happened to Barbaro.
(Cut to quote and clip from pre-surgery press conference)
DR: “It’s a very complicated fracture uh he broke the bone above his fetlock as well as the bone below his fetlock and he also dislocated that joint so it’s a very very serious injury. Uh the plan, the aspects of the surgery will be dictated slightly by what we find at surgery but the bottom line is we will attempt to perform a fusion of that joint to stabilize it and make it comfortable enough for him to walk on. We do not see this severe of injury frequently because the fact that most horses that suffer this severe of an injury are typically put down on the track.”
(Cut back to Jeanine)
JE: “So as you can hear from Dr. Richardson, Barbaro is up against it. They went into the surgery saying that he had a 50/50 chance of survival. After the surgery he will be put into a recovery pool where he will stay for about an hour. He will essentially be floating in a raft to prevent him from doing any damage to the repaired leg and the big question will as to when they get him on solid ground and he actually has to put weight onto the leg that could be the turning point as to see if Barbaro can support weight on that repaired limb.
Talking Head: “ Jeanine you think about what is essentially a broken lower leg. Why can’t the horse survive on just three good legs?”
JE: “ Well you know as we’ve been saying horses have very poor vascular systems to their lower limbs. They have no way really, really no muscles in the lower limbs in the lower part of the leg. And muscles assist in pumping the blood flow back up to the heart. So with a poor circulatory system you don’t get very good healing. Also horse’s feet are very small compared to their body size. ! I mean 2 of their feet equal about 1 of ours and yet they are supporting 7 times the body mass or weight of a human. So they need all 4 feet to have the weight distributed evenly. Otherwise there is just too much of a load and they cannot support the weight ad it begins to fail.”
Talking Head: “Jeanine Edwards thank you for joining us on ESPN News. I am sure you will be joining us once the surgery is complete. Thanks a lot.”

OK that was a mini update. Saying the same thing.
In surgery still, will be in sling then into pool in raft to recover, then to standing in stall. Thats when the important part comes in. When he has to bear weight on the leg.
But not out of the woods yet. Still more potential problems in the future. Founder could be an issue later...etc.
Remeber Chris Kappler's brilliant Stallion, Royal Kaliber, succumbed to colic that was brought on by the stall rest for his injury.

But still in surgery means they haven't given up. The surgeon's quotes in the noon press conference made it sound entirely possible that they'd open him up, say no way, and euthanize him on the table. At least they haven't done that.
But even if he does make it through this, all the potential things that could go wrong during his recovery just worry me sick. Horses aren't designed to be immobile and bear weight on three legs. I'm keeping my fingers firmly crossed.

While we're waiting, just thought I'd try to answer the question about where jingling a curb chain got started.
From the FAQ Section:
"Curb chains: This bit of BB lore arose out of the infamous Question For Merry [http://www.chronicleforums.com/Forum/showthread.php?t=35696] thread. The California clique decided (tongue in cheek) to form a cult, and decided to beg for money at the airport. But rather than banging tambourines, Merry suggested rattling curb chains.
These days, curb chains are collectively jangled whenever a BBer needs good luck. Make sure to keep one handy! And be sure to request curb jingles from fellow BBers whenever you need them."
This goes back to early 2001.

According to everything we're covering he ill be weight bearing once he is up. Thats why they are working so hard. Once he is out of the pool, he will be in a padded stall and be expected to bear weight on it.
Now yes he may not put al his weight on it as normal, but do remember how many times we see our horses napping with one hind leg cocked. And horses have survived broken hind legs before. Another one can also. Keep thinking positive guys!!

Worth noting is that a few years a go a Phipps filly (Dancinginmydreams?) broke down behind and was saved for broodie duty.
Being as the brakes are up front on horses, it's easier to stop a horse with a hind injury. Front injuries often cause falls.
Also, it may be easier for barbaro to relearn to bear weight on the injured hind leg than he would had it been a foreleg.
Just thought I'd add something encouraging.

That is sort of what I was thinking. Since horses bear so much weight on their front end, it could be easier for him since his was a rear injury.

i know this might not matter but i have a trak/tb cross stallion that had a simlar accident happen to him in a field as a 2yr.old he fractured the hind rt pastern and broke off two chips on the ankle. he was stall kept for 8-9 months(owners at the time refused surgery) hence how i have him now.he has made a wonderful recovery and is now a coming 4 yr.old full of himself and able to breed!he plays and runs, rears and bucks all day long in his paddock. yes it was hard keping a young fit stallion quiet for that long, but we gave him 20 reserpine pills twice a day for the entire lenth of the stall rest. it was more for our own safety when in the stall, cold hosing and cleaning the stall. but i hope this gives everybody hope that he can heal up and come out of this, it is just up to him after the surgery. i know it was not as bad of an injury as barbaro's but simlar.some days are better than others for taylor, somedays he is 95% and somedays he is 75%, but he is happy and healthy and still with us!

It occurs to me as I haunt this computer that we are likely to be in a very long vigil. The last time one of my horses had major (5+hour) surgery, it took over 9 hours to get her awake and upright-- and THEN came the roller-coaster ride of laminitis, infection, ulcers, etc. Every time I became elated at a turn for the better, the vets would remind me of how many possible complications still loomed-- and were they ever right on that score!
The good news is that although my horse was given a much smaller chance of survival than Barbaro (less than 10%), she recovered fully, and has been happy, healthy and sound (knock on wood) for the entire 4 years since.
Gosh, it's hard to get things done with all appendages crossed! I have very, very high hopes that this horse will pull through, though.

As copied off the Channel 10, Local PA News:
Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro was in surgery Sunday fighting for his life a day after breaking his ankle at the Preakness, and the colt's surgeon said he's never worked on so many catastrophic injuries to one horse. There was no update after nearly 5 hours of surgery.Dr. Dean Richardson was operating at the University of Pennsylvania's New Bolton Center for Large Animals and said the procedure could take several hours. At the front gate, well-wishers already had tacked up signs: "Thank you, Barbaro," "Believe in Barbaro" and "We Love you Barbaro." Barbaro sustained "life-threatening injuries" after breaking three bones above and below his right rear ankle at the start of the Preakness Stakes.
"You do not see this severe injury frequently because the fact is most horses that suffer this typically are put down on the race track," said Richardson, the chief of surgery for the center. "This is rare.""It's about as bad as it could be," he added. "The main thing going for the horse is a report that his skin was not broken at the time of injury. It's a testament to the care given to the team of doctors on the track and [jockey] Mr. Prado on the racetrack."Richardson outlined Barbaro's medical problems: a broken cannon bone above the ankle, a broken sesamoid bone behind the ankle and a broken long pastern bone below the ankle. The fetlock joint -- the ankle -- was dislocated."The aspects of the surgery will be dictated slightly by what we find," Richardson said. "But the bottom line is we will attempt to perform a fusion of that joint and to stabilize it and make it comfortable enough for him to walk on."Barbaro suffered upper and lower leg fractures early during the Preakness, won by Bernardini.Barbaro was transported back to Kennett Square on Saturday night for medical treatment. However, the severity of the injury could cut off circulation to Barbaro’s leg, which makes the injury life threatening. The horse false started and had to be put back in the starting gate at the start of the Preakness. Then Barbaro pulled up near the first turn and jockey Edgar Prado guided Barbaro to the side of the race track.Fans were crying in the grandstand as the horse was loaded into an ambulance and taken away, his injured leg in an inflatable cast.Prado was also tears on the race track.Barbarao, the Kentucky Derby winner, was the overwhelming 3-5 favorite. Four straight favorites lost from 1997-2000. Since then, favorites had won five in a row entering Saturday's race.

most recent update on ESPN - as of 7:33 pm
KENNETT SQUARE, Pa. -- Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro was in surgery Sunday fighting for his life a day after breaking his right rear leg in three places at the Preakness, and the colt's surgeon said he's never worked on so many catastrophic injuries to one horse.
"You do not see this severe injury frequently because the fact is most horses that suffer this typically are put down on the race track."
Dr. Dean Richardson
Dr. Dean Richardson was operating at the University of Pennsylvania's New Bolton Center for Large Animals and said the procedure could take several hours.
Corinne Sweeney, a veterinarian and the executive hospital director, said the horse was still in surgery about five hours after it began but that the procedure was near completion. She didn't give any other details on the horse's condition.
At the front gate, well-wishers already had tacked up signs: "Thank you, Barbaro," "Believe in Barbaro" and "We Love you Barbaro."
Barbaro sustained "life-threatening injuries" after breaking bones above and below his right rear ankle at the start of the Preakness Stakes.
"You do not see this severe injury frequently because the fact is most horses that suffer this typically are put down on the race track," said Richardson, the chief of surgery for the center. "This is rare."
"It's about as bad as it could be," he added. "The main thing going for the horse is a report that his skin was not broken at the time of injury. It's a testament to the care given to the team of doctors on the track and [jockey] Mr. Prado on the racetrack."
With no word on Barbaro's condition over four hours after surgery began, the normally empty New Bolton Center was swarming with media awaiting an update. There had been no sightings of trainer Michael Matz or owners Roy and Gretchen Jackson, though the Jacksons reportedly were at the center for the start of surgery before leaving.
The Jacksons live less than 10 miles away on their farm in West Grove, outside Philadelphia in the horse country of Chester County. Now the fate of their horse could be determined down the road.
Richardson outlined Barbaro's medical problems: a broken cannon bone above the ankle, a broken sesamoid bone behind the ankle and a broken long pastern bone below the ankle. The fetlock joint -- the ankle -- was dislocated.
"The aspects of the surgery will be dictated slightly by what we find," Richardson said. "But the bottom line is we will attempt to perform a fusion of that joint and to stabilize it and make it comfortable enough for him to walk on."
The breaks occurred as a result of an "athletic injury," Sweeney said.
"It's an injury associated with the rigors of high performance," she said. "They were designed as athletes and they are elite athletes, thus they incur injuries associated with performance. The frame sometimes plays a role, absolutely."
If the surgery is successful, Barbaro will be lowered into a large swimming pool before he is awakened -- part of New Bolton's renowned recovery system that minimizes injury risk. The horse is fitted with a sling on the operating table, placed on a raft and lowered into the water, allowing it to safely flail until fully conscious.
After about an hour the horse is transported via monorail back to the stable. Richardson "anticipated the horse would have a pool recovery," Sweeney said.
Unbeaten and a serious contender for the Triple Crown, Barbaro broke down only a few hundred yards into the 1 3/16-mile Preakness. With his right leg flaring out grotesquely, the record crowd of 118,402 watched in shock as Barbaro veered sideways. Jockey Edgar Prado pulled the powerful colt to a halt, jumped off and awaited medical assistance.
Barbaro was fitted for an inflatable cast by the attending veterinarian, Dr. Nicholas Meittinis, and the colt trained so expertly by Michael Matz was taken to the center, known as the University of Pennsylvania's George D. Widener Hospital New Bolton Center.
Barbara Dallap, a clinician at the center, was present when Barbaro arrived Saturday night.
"When we unloaded him, he was placed in intensive care and we stabilized him overnight," Dallap said. "He was very brave and well behaved under the situation and was comfortable overnight."
Matz, too, was at the center Saturday night.
"Two weeks ago we were on such a high and this is our worst nightmare," he said. "Hopefully, everything will go well with the operation and we'll be able to save him."
Tucked away on a sprawling, lush 650-acre campus in Chester County, the New Bolton Center is widely considered the top hospital for horses in the mid-Atlantic region. The center is renowned for its specialized care, especially on animals needing complicated surgery on bone injuries.

I knew I should've logged on here before trying to check anything via TV when I woke this afternoon! Thanks for the updates.
FoxNews did just have a tidbit about 10 minutes ago that Barbaro's still in surgery, noting the 3 bones and comments of how catstrophic the injuries are & the fact most horses are put down right on the track when something like this happens. They also stated it has been 6+ hours and they are waiting with baited breath for news he's out and in recovery. I know, that's not much, but each little bit is better than nothing (at least for me).
Jingles, jingles, jingles for Barbaro!!

which channel would be the best to see the post surgery press conference? They ARE still going to have one aren't they? It's been so long since they said the surgery was almost completed. Is it possible they're waiting to see how he comes out of recovery before they give us any news? On pins and needles here.

How long has he been in surgery for? How long can a horse stay under anesthesia for??
I found it interesting to read about the pool and waking him up. I so hope that he is ok...

Well if he did go in at 1 like they planned then he would be approaching 7 hours.... Thats a good question about the anesthesia...

Well, I'm thinking that maybe they are including recovery time in the reporting when they say he is still in surgery - maybe he is actually out of surgery and in the pool, and they will do a press conference after they have him back out of the pool and into his stall. I'm hoping that this does not mean that things are going badly, because if that were the case, we'd be hearing that he was put down on the table.

I think Evenstar has it right.
Press conference when out of pool and back in stall.
Think about it... out of surgery and sitting in pool and then talk to media? What if they ask how he came out of anesthetic....uhhh no answer?
Can he bear weight? Uhhh no answer.
No I think (And hope) its a long wait to get him to standing in the padded stall.
As a side note... my updates may slow down. Mr. Xctrygirl is beyond upset at how many hours I have been online.
I will try to update but in my abscence, please throw what you hear and know up on the thread!!!!

I think it's pretty safe to assume that they will not report to the media until Barbaro has regained consciousness in the pool and been safely moved to his stall.
In this case, no news IS good news!

Wonder why the media hasnt reported this info ?
ESPN hasnt said a word I would guess that someone at New Bolton has made the (very wise, IMO) decision that the media not be told *anything* new until Barbaro is standing.
So much can go wrong after he wakes up and they pull him out of that pool--I can understand wanting to keep everything hush-hush until they know if he can stand on that leg or not.
Remember, lots and lots of people out there watching ESPN or other networks for news aren't horse people and probably wouldn't understand it *at all* if they were told Barbaro was out of surgery, but still had to make it through recovery.
