They need to take donations via paypal. Imagine the contributions they would get then in cases like these. Dont all COTHers have paypal?? ;)
Maybe someone can talk to the NB center tomorrow about arranging that? Seems like 2 steps to me:
1) NB needs to set up a paypal acct
2) Webmaster needs to update site to include paypal link with their contact info (donatetofriendsofnb@nb.com or whatever). They have many (5?) different funds to donate to, I will copy and paste those below from their website. Each of those funds would need their own paypal account of course, where you can designate in the memo/instructions area "in memory of."
I believe in this case I would feel that Friends of NB Center is most appropriate for me personally.

Whats on ESPN now...... daughter Lauren has been patient with Mom watching TVG and waiting for the news conference but I have to let her have SOME tv time before she gets her bath. Disney channel, oh boy. Hannah Montana???
Thinking good thoughts for the big boy. It is encouraging that they have perservered this far with the surgery. Mr Hobie says there is no doubt someone from the insurance company there with Barbaro 24/7 looking out for the insurance companies best interests. What a thought... ins. companies have to hire people to go around making sure horses aren't too quickly euthanized and that every avenue has been explored before consenting to euthanasia. I hadnt really ever thought about it before - not that I would ever suspect the Jacksons of this! But it happens enough that the insurance companies have to protect themselves against it, which I find incredibly sad.

Questions for those more knowledgeable than me. Do I understand correctly that horses are really not good candidates for anesthesia and the longer they're under the more dangerous it is? Surgery's now lasted for 6 1/2 hours. I thought anything over 3 was very risky. Also, seemed to remember reading somewhere that when they lay in one position for this long that there's a danger of nerve damage due to their weight? Anyone know anything about this?
At 6 p.m. they said surgery was almost over. My poor horses are waiting to be fed because I was anxious to see the outcome which I expected at any minute! could have fed them and been back by now! Guess I'll give it a few more minutes before I tear myself away from the computer.

Heard the same thing just now. Being "in surgery" per media, can mean many things, including being in the recovery sequence.
At the barn this afternoon -- well over two hours ago so it was an erroneous and mistaken misimpression -- while untacking I though I heard someone say that the boy didn't make it. Didn't ask for clarification because if what I thought I had heard had been the case, I wanted to learn the fact for certain in private.
So let's keep our best hopes up. (My boy would be highly indignant at the prospect of a curb chain, so we just plain don't own one.)

I would have thought that as well as NB has been keeping the media informed that the surgeon would have come directly out and given us some sort of idea how the surgery went while they were waiting for him to recover in the pool....... with the surgery "nearing completion" approx 2 hours ago with still no word I am really a bit concerned. Barbaro has had more people than he can imagine sitting with him and his people through this surgery.
I am in full agreement - if his quality of life will be questionable at best but most likely not good then a peaceful end on the operating table might be best for Barbaro.
Meadow36
May. 21, 2006, 07:54 PM

Wasn't the Dr Corrinne _____ that came out to say surgery was almost done one of the vets operating on him? If so, I would doubt she would have left while he was still on the the table. So maybe they really are waiting until he is settled as the recovery is even more risky than the operation itself. Wanting to eliminate all the false hope?

Imagine your are the veterinary surgeon. You have spent the afternoon with your team in the most complicated and most visible surgery of your career. You've done your very best, overcome whatever curves you encountered, and you are exhausted. The prognosis understandably is equivaocal, especially given the risks of recovery from anesthesia.
Can you imagine having to wrap this up and then hold a bloody press conference? If it were me, I would want to wait until the recovery sequence is complete and successful, if for no other reason than to marshal the personal resources to face the cameras.

I know everyone's minds are working overtime on this. I've been wondering if part of the process doesn't involve fashioning plates or other prosthetic devices that have to be made in the moment--that could certainly hold things up. Yes, there is the question of how long a horse can be under anesthesia, but what's the option in this case? Most horses with these injuries wouldn't have made it to the table, so they might as well go for broke in doing whatever they need to in order to shift the odds in favor of success.
I wouldn't want the needs of the public and the media to be a priority, which means we just have to sit and wait. The waiting just works in favor of an outcome worth waiting for. I hope, I hope, I hope ...

Barbaro is now in the recovery pool (7:40 pm). He has a bone plate fusing his ankle and pastern and a caste has been placed over this. Dr. Richardson described the surgery as one of the toughest he has performed. He is awakening from anesthesea in the pool, and once he completely comes around, he will be transported via sling back to his stall later this evening (it usually takes an hour from when they are placed in the pool to when they are able to return to their stall.)

Doc is the arrogant type, good thing in this situation. Michael was there, but definately not in the spot light. He felt more confident today than he did yesterday.

From Bloodhorse:
Barbaro Surgery Complete; Standing in Intensive Care Unit
Date Posted: 5/21/2006 8:57:21 PM
Last Updated: 5/21/2006 9:24:53 PM
Surgeons reported that Barbaro's seven-plus-hour surgery has ended, and the classic winner who was severely injured in Saturday's Preakness Stakes (gr. I) is in the intensive care unit at the New Bolton Center and standing.
Dr. Dean Richardson, who led the surgical team, said the son of Dynaformer was in surgery for about seven hours. He said one reason the procedure took so long was the amount of time to prepare the colt for surgery and the recovery time to allow the anesthesia to wear off.
"It was long recovery because he was under anesthesia for so long. The surgery was very difficult," said Richardson, noting that the surgery is only the first step toward Barbaro being able to survive his injuries. "The severity of the fracture was very severe. The long pastern bone was in 20-plus pieces. It was not a simple fracture. The skin did not break. He is very very badly bruised. We were able to put the appropriate implants in the leg."
Richardson also said a procedure to fusion the fetlock joint – the ankle – was successful.
"He got up from anesthesia without any injuries," Richardson said.
He said horses with injuries such as Barbaro's are susceptible to other problems, including infection and laminitis.
"These are all major concerns we have. At this moment he is very comfortable in his leg. Things right now are good."
Richardson said one of his major concerns, that the blood flow in the areas of the injury had been cut off, quickly dismissed when the doctors determined "he had good pulse in his feet. When we did the procedure he had good blood supply throughout."

Xcntrygirl mentioned post-operative colic as the cause of Royal Kaliber's death earier. I just found last month's PH and in it was an article about the use of Zelnorm on post op horses or those with tendency to colic. If it's an effective treatment, then colic may be one less hurdle for Barbaro.

New Bolton had a filly with very similar injury (at least similar in general - many bone fragments) in 2001. (NB may have had dozens of horses with similar injuries over the years but I happen to know about 1 in particular.) She was at NB for a long time (6 months or so, I think). She did eventually recover & has had a couple of foals since so there has been success in the past.

I am so relieved that all is well so far (still with tears on my cheeks) ... and my kudos are for Barabaro's owners and breeders... while Dr. Richardson has performed miracles we all know that it was because the owners looked him in the eye and said, "Do whatever is possible to save this horse". Even Dr. R was quoted with saying that most horses with this amount of compounded injuries would have been put down at the track. The Jackson's are obviously spectacular horsefolks and I thank them for seeing this through! America may be watching but they will doing the work behind the scenes...
God bless the breeders and owners who can afford these marvelous racehorses and take responsibility for their well being to the highest level... and God bless all of those who have been a part of Barbaro's life and are feeling the cautious optimism right now.
Jingling through the night and straight on till he's grazing in a paddock!!!!

As a Canadian without access - thanks so much to all who kept us updated.
My jingles are still happening as we pray him the recovery over the next 6-8 weeks. This will be a test time for everything.
So grateful for this community. To come to a place where I am not "the strange woman worrying about a horse she never met..."
We are still cheering Barbaro. If you are in pasture and accepting visitors a year from now, I will be one of the many there. Love you , you strapping and magnificent colt. God carries you now as much as you will allow. We all know that you want to carry yourself on your own terms. Thank you dedicated surgeons who have given hope to this horse.

Prayers and jingles for them all.

I don't know why he isn't in a sling. I do know that they moved him from the operating table via sling, put him in the pool (97 f) in a raft like thing that allowed him to have the boyancy of water and the restriction of water without him getting wet, and used a sling to take him out of the pool. They were watching and holding their breath basically until he put pressure on it w/o flipping out. Maybe it is because they did a procedure to fuse everything using plates. Maybe her horse wasn't fused or plated and is just healing...That is only my guess. They did state as previous posters stated that they did mention laminitis in his other hind b/c it would absorb more pressure if he favored the injured leg too much.

I think it goes to his ability to get down & back up last nite on his own, and his being "extremely comfortable" in that leg, according to Dr. Richardson.
It seems reasonable that if he can function as normally as possible, he'll have a better chance of recovery.
Also, if he can bear some weight on that leg, it probably lowers the risk of laminitis in the opposite leg.

He doesn't need a sling. If you could see the bracing system used under the outside bandage you'd see why. He will need to have bandage removed every so many days to clean leg & attend/monitor bandage sores. Again, he is a LONG way from being out of woods but at least he is kind on himself during this first phase.

Matz made the comment that he lives 10 minutes away...so in theory he could still be in his life.
The Matz's do live very close to the center, I live down the road from them. Knowing MM he will be still in his life. I believe the Jackson's will want him to be part of the recovery team. MM knows how to get the best from a horse and is an excellent horseman.

Dr. Richardson said in the press conference that it wasn't a padded stall. They usually aren't and usually don't need to be.
The sling isn't always used, either. Sometimes they do better using the leg and keeping things as close to normal as possible...it keeps from depression developing....was mentioned a number of pages back (like around 23 or 24). Many were wondering the same thing before the press conference earlier.

That picture of him being raised from the pool is surreal- who would've thought that would be happening to the Derby winner two weeks after the win?!
It is also an uplifting picture, as it shows him being successfully led away from surgery. Those pictures show me just how hard those doctors and vet techs worked to put him back together, and I am as proud of them as I am of him :)
Go Barbaro! Have a good recovery, champ! I'm routing for you!

I am glad to hear that he had a good night. Lets hope and pray that he stays infection free. I have to go to work now...it can be considered a 4 letter word right? I hope tvg will continue with updates, but I have a feeling that within a couple of days as things settle down their coverage will fade. I'll have to try to find another source.

This is such good news... what an amazing boy.
May the rest of the recovery go as well.
You know, I feel so guilty. He was on my shortlist but, despite being impressed by him, I was still lukewarm up until a week before Preakness, before really starting to climb on the wagon.
The heart and courage this horse continues to demonstrate are enough to make you cry on their own.
Bless the TB, bless Barbaro.

A bit of an update on the AP a few hours ago:
(CBS/AP) Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro was "a far brighter horse" Monday morning, said the veterinarian who operated on him Sunday.
"He's acting much more like a thoroughbred colt should act. He's trying to bite people. He's moving around his stall vigorously right now," Dr. Dean Richardson, Chief of Surgery at the New Bolton Center for Large Animals, said on CBS News' The Early Show. "And probably most importantly, there's several mares in the intensive care unit and he's very interested in them. That's an excellent sign."
"He looks happy this morning. It's a long way to go. But this morning he looks happy," Richardson told co-anchor René Syler. Still, " Any one day could be the last day."

Sending loads of prayers and jingles for this phenomenal young stallion. I pray that he stays sensible during the long recovery process, but it sure is good that he is bright, eating and showing some spunk. I know he has the best care and support group around him.
Words cannot express what a great job Edgar Prado did in getting Barbaro stopped. He knew his horse and he knew something was wrong. He was Barbaro's hero in that fateful moment.
