Hey computer programmers, which computer language do you suggest right now as a good one to start out learning that will give you a good foundation to branch out into others? The last time I really messed around w/ computing, it was C++, is that still the gold standard?

It honestly depends on what you're looking to do.

A lot of CMSes, which are the gold-standards of web design right now, are based in PHP. It's helpful to know. Javascript is always fantastic to have around. HTML5 is coming up the ranks but if you know HTML then it's not going to be a huge adjustment.

Cannot help if we're not talking web stuff! :)

Java and Ruby are the stuff that people hire for these days.

Start with Python. Fast, uncomplicated and powerful.

SAS has a pretty good if smaller market. Most pharma and insurance companies use SAS for their analysis.

Lots of $$ in SAS Pharma programming, and it's easy to learn if you already know how to program.
