As many of you may have noticed, our dear Pam (aka "Lord Helpus") has not been posting lately. I've been in touch with her and she's having some severe health problems. I'm sure I'm not the only one on the BB who's dealt with the anguish and uncertainty of a difficult to diagnose and treat health crisis. She can really use our collective good wishes and moral support as she deals with this and seeks treatment that will allow her to get back to the lifestyle she so treasured.

Pam was the inspirational force behind our virtual horse show that helped raise so much $ for charity after 9/11. She's also contributed much to discussions about amateur owner hunters, competing "then vs. now" and keeping a sense of humor about selecting and starting young H/J prospects.

Here I once competed against her (I'm quite certain that she and Valor always beat me) on the A circuit out here, and then I cross paths with her on the COTH BB. She's been such a help to me offline, too, contributing to some of my writing projects with her wit and experience.

So, dear Pam, get well. I'm jangling my curb chain for you. And know that next time I polish my boots, I'll put an extra shine on them just for you! /infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

(oops! this is Serengeti's secret identity) Please let me know if there is ANYTHING I can do, I have from next Tuesday to the Tuesday after that with no school and little to do (well Rood and Riddle visit Thurs) but that's it. Please please let me know if I can help.

Pam, hope all these good thoughts are reaching you--as you know (Praise the Lord!!!!) I have no "active" curb chain at the moment, so I won't dig one out to jingle for fear of stirring up the dust and suffering through the ensuing allergy fit (plus having to look at all that green, stiff tack that hasn't even seen Lexol for 10 years) but please be assured that my best wishes are being put to work overtime for you!!!

Every curb chain in the tackroom at El Ranchito (including the ones in Merry's famed Bit Museum) are being jingle-jangled for you, Pam.

I hope it brings you some small measure of comfort to know that so many people are rooting for you ... whether you're on a horse or not. /infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

"Lord Helpus" is right, but at times like this it's more like "Lord, help me." How very frustrating it must be for such a go-getter like yourself to be "temporarily dismounted." Hang in there, if your spunk and drive are any measure of wellness then you will bounce back in spades.

Okay, so lots of mixed metaphors there but you know what I mean!

You go, girl.

Love,

Thanks, Merry, for this topic.

This BB card is so much better than an e-card signed by just the few people who had recently expressed concern about you, Pam. Obviously you have touched many people by relating your experiences with horses and showing over the years.

So, as many have already written, I add my wishes for a speedy recovery so you can get back to living your life as you want. If it would help at all, I'd go out and buy an 18 carat gold curb chain to jingle every hour on the hour! In lieu of that, my thoughts continue to be with you.

Cheers, Maggi

She says, snuffling into her Kleenex. You guys are wonderful. As this post sinks down into second pagedom, I will print it out, and it will go everywhere with me -- to every hospital visit -- and when times get rough, I will reread it and listen to the tinkle of those curb chains and know that things can't be as bad as they seem, because hospitals are not reality -- you guys are reality. And I cannot/will not lose touch with that reality.

When Merry told me she waas starting a Get Well card, I joked that I would have to figure out how to do those aliases so that some one would answer. This card has lifted my spirits far more than you can ever know.

Thank you so much, one and all...... :O)))))))

PS: The farm has become too much for me to keep up, so horses and I are moving to mother's farm in Southern Pines (because of my health I sold off a lot in Dec. and am down to 4 horses now.) Because of my weakness I can no longer post, but I have bought a Western saddle and plan to be seen jog trotting these suckers throughout the Walthour Moss Foundation as much as my strength will let me. Warren is going to LOVE that (NOT!) But I haven't be able to ride at all since Oct., so this is my way of trying to get back on these boys and put them back to work. Da big Dubya saw the Western saddle go by his stall and turned into a Lhasa Apso, his eyes bulged out of his head so much. He is so tall, I think I will have to have a ladder to climb on to put it on him.

Bridle wize I asked the lady who owned the tack store and is a Owner to Ride reiner what bridle she used. It was a gorgeous, single ear, bridle so I bought the same bridle for my first timers :O)))) Might as well start at the top -- don't want to make any fashion faux pas.

I remember something you wrote once about your farm. You said that sometimes it was just a dream, a name painted on your trailer.

You still have that trailer with your farm name on it; as long as you have that, you still have your farm in the same way you've had it before when your life wasn't what you wanted it to be.

I don't want to be too positive here, but one of our whips was diagnosed with MS in November after a severe bout with weakness. With much work and therapy, he was riding second flight at the hunt Sunday. I'd guess he's probably your age or younger. Miracles happen. And don't forget Norman Cousin's laughing therapy when you're setting up your treatment regime.

but after reading one of the previous posts i am wondering if it's ms that you were diagnosed with. the only reason i ask is that i was diagnosed with ms (relapsing remitting kind) about three years ago - after years of weird symptoms. it got to the point that i was almost too weak to walk. i had to make some lifestyle changes but i am now somewhat in a remission (not back to normal, i do have some deficits) but i am riding again. i had to put my horses in a boarding situation and let someone else do the labor of caring for them, and freeleased my mare out, sold a wonderful young horse that i had brought along to about second/third level, etc. but i am slowly regaining some strength. i hope and pray that if you have ms, you will also go into a remission. the most important thing is to keep your spirits up - i know it's a fight, but you can't let this disease work on your mind as well as your body. if you want to email me, please do. i can be reached at jsinger@frontiernet.net god bless you.

Welcome to Southern Pines and hope you feel better and better and can get on that cowgirl garb and ride thru the foundation.
My husband just got a western saddle with silver conchos and rawhide bridle coplete with Bosal and mecate and shuefly! If you do not think our big fat TBs did not look think he was crazy at first! He has had it on all of them except the just broken ones and he says they are next! The green conf. horse was champion last week after some "western" training teaching him to bend without a bit... now that is a great concept. The trouble with the western saddles and "our" horses is getting them "up" that high! one needs a fork lift!
Again hope you get feeling better and can ride and enjoy the Pines! Take care and hope to see you here!

Hey guys, ever since this thread started, good things have happened. Several days after the curb chains started jangling, the diagnosis of lung cancer was changed to double pneumonia, which has gone by now. So that is great!

The original diagnosis of neuromuscular disease was thought by both by me and the doctors at the Cleveland Clinic to be Myasthenia Gravis. Not a nice disease to have, but one tat can be lived through for a number of years. Well, MG is no longer a viable diagnosis, although there is no second choice at this time. So I am still weak and walking is tough -- I often have to hold on to walls to stand up.

But a horse person never says "die". So, I still am "riding" 2 horses per day (10 minutes each) on the theory that I will never get stronger sitting on a couch. The hardest part is dismounting because I cannot feel my feet, and especially getting off 17h Sophie Moose can be a startling landing when finally my feet hit the ground.

So, my friends, all good thing come about for a reason, and you have been part of this reason. When I last wrote, I thought I thought I had lung cancer and Myasthenia Gravis. And I was struggling in the freezing cold of Lexington, doing it all, very sick and very miserable. Now I am in lovely S Pines (BTW, my mother is not here for the winter, so I have the house to myself). I will be going back to Lex in April when Mother comes home to SP..... Anyone in SP, please email me and we will trail ride (ENGLISH) on these lovely trails. They are just too good to be true and I want to get every horse sold before I head home in March. So I have to network the the horses. I do have the4 western saddle and bridle, and if anyone wasts to pair up with a western bridle and jig (or is that jog) down the firlanes, I will gussie up the Bear-man, too. But, he swings both ways.

Again, thanks for everything. Now that I am better, I will be back on line more often. What an incredible thread and a great place the COTH BB is.

Oh Pam, what a marvelous surprise to see your post. And, what great news you have given us. Welcome back to the Board.

Now there's just that one last hurdle (the diagnosis) to get over. It may well be something that can be improved upon even if not completely cured and it may be something that you can live quite nicely with - if only they can figure out what it is.

Now, may I suggest that you rent a walker for a while. Being weak and having to depend on walls to hold you up isn't a good thing. You don't want to fall and break a leg or hip! That would be an unnecessary setback. And, please, for all of us who worry, don't try to do too much physical stuff on your own. Have someone around, just in case.

Since you've decided to sell all the horses, I'm sure that won't be a problem. You have such a good eye for a hunter prospect, they should be snatched up fast once you put them on the market.

Again, WELCOME BACK! We've missed you. /infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif /infopop/emoticons/icon_cool.gif /infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

See absent bb'er thread. Did not see initally what your malady was, but it sounds like things are looking up.

I find great strength in not dwelling on the matters we can not change, condition, but instead on the things we still can do.

Keep up the good faith, and if I may offer a dismounting tip. I have a very tall mounting block, and when I am all done I "park" Bud back by it and get off again on the top step. That big ol' slide down the 17 hands was a little tough. Of course I was only 5 weeks out of abdominal surgery, but what the heck. /infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

I figured if they thought I was well enough to puke my guts out with Chemo therapy I was well enough to ride my horse. So I did! Still haven't "lost the cookies" over the chemo thank goodness.

More great news--I finished my ride on Sophie Moose today because the vet was coming to look st Warren, and NOT because I was so tired that I had to get off SM due to exhaustion! And next week I have signed up for a lesson with a famous dressage trainer for SM (although I have warned him about my neuromusuclar weakness -- there are only so many 10 meter circles that any living person can trot in one lifetime)

Sophie Moose is so special that she deserves a special start in life, so I have decuded to spend the major bucks and give her the good start with Sven or Julius, or whoever. Hell, he speaks English with a German accent and has been tuning up all the people for the Mark Phillips Clinic which is in town this week, so I figure he must be good enough for SM and me.

He uses my mother's dressage ring and so he has seen SM go and he likes her a lot. He is also in awe of Joe Fargis (where I plan on sending SM when she is ready; so he is all for getting her off to a good start).

More later after the big lesson.

It sounds as though things are really looking up. Now whatever happened to that idea you had about breaking out the western saddle? /infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

i'm so glad to hear things are looking up. I have a friend with "neuropathy" so that she cant feel her legs either...she rides a lot too and has the same problems with getting down...
I'm so glad to hear the good news.

I am so glad you were able to keep Warren and Sophie Moose, and that you are well eough to ride and enjoy them.

Keep on keeping on.

Nothing beats the healing power of horses. May you continue to improve. We will all look forward to hearing about Sophie's lesson!
