The best one I've come up with comes with a tiny story.
I bred an Appendix QH mare who was bay with a little white on diagonal legs and a small blaze to a dark sorrel stallion who only had a thumbprint-sized star. Okay, so I'm thinking bay or sorrel baby with marginal white.
Well, this mare pops out this colt who was a bright, orange sorrel with a bald face, sock on one front leg, stocking on the other, stockings on both hind legs up into the gaskin. Disconnected white spot on one gaskin, big white belly spot and flaxen mane and tail! OMG, he was bright! LOL
Anyway, I named him Kickstart My Heart, since I almost had a heart attack when I first saw him and wondered if I was ever going to be able to get QH papers on him. He wound up being double-registered QH and APHA, sold for a ton of money as a yearling and had a very good show career. Worked out okay!

I love the show names of some of the ponies at my old barn--Dust Bunny, Uptown Girl, and Just Dew It. Why is it that ponies always seem to have the cutest names? /infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

that my instructor in college had her Prelim mare registered with the USCTA as "Quantum Leap" I thought that was one of the best event horse names ever.
I have one with a story too /infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif /infopop/emoticons/icon_razz.gif
My best friend owns a stallion (daddy of my 2 y.o) and his registered name has the word Sport in it...so we're always trying to come up with registered names that go with that. The favorite one I came up with was "Sportin' Wood" I of course thought i was TERRIBLY clever and funny, Lisa informed me it probably wouldn't fly. /infopop/emoticons/icon_frown.gif Some people just have NO sense of humor /infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif /infopop/emoticons/icon_razz.gif /infopop/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif /infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

My favorite show name is for my eventer right now. His name is Favor the Bold. It came from the saying fortune favors the bold. He is wonderfully brave x-c so I thought it fit perfectly.
No locker room speeches. No playbooks. No contracts or free agents. Not even a word spoken between teammates. Doesn't that make it the greatest of all team sports?

My horse's registered name is "Sunday Afternoon." This didn't do a whole lot for me, but I wanted a show name that was similar to his everyday name (Sunny).
After I owned him for a little while, I came up with "Mostly Sunny." He is such a good boy most of the time, so it really fits his personality and how I feel about him. I've gotten several compliments on his name at shows.
Before Sunny, I had a mare named Bess. Her show name was "Elizabethan." I always liked it, but my husband thought it was kinda snobby.

I think my favorite is a pony mare that is at my old barn. She was born on April Fool's Day, so her barn name is April, and her show name is Nobody's Fool. How cute is that?!

I knew a horse named Aqua Fortis, which apparently means "strong water" or similar. The people who bred and foaled him named him that because when he was still very young, he got separated from his mother and fell off a bank into a river, and was stuck there for awhile until someone realized he was missing. He was quite sick afterwards apparently, but he recovered, ending up as a very beautiful but VERY ill-humored stallion who once (among other sins) bit someone on the face! Anyway, I thought it was a cool name.

There were two show ponies here in the Edmonton area that had names I thought were terrific.
The first was a bay arab pony who was retired this year. His show name was "Set to Go" and his barn name was B.J. This pony started many young riders on their hunter careers.
The other is a gray pony who has recently moved to Ontario. His show name is "Let's Make Magic" and his barn name is Merlin. He is a fantastic pony that has a great temperment. Actually, his owner is showing him at the Royal in the Large Pony Division.

I know of a prelim jumper with the name "Always on Top", barn name Topper!
My horse's show name was "My Savior" when I bought him and I tried to show him three times and he always came up with a minor injury the day before we left like clock work! So I changed his name to "Just My Luck".
Also I love the nane Designated Driver!

The "Daddy" name must be popular.
At Catskills this year I heard one pony called, "Don't Tell Daddy" and and another one, "Thanks Dad". Obviously two different families.
I also like this one... I think it's a jumper, "Go Big or Go Home".

There was a mare at my barn in Ct who before she was broke caught her nose on something and had to have it stitched. It healed but left behind a bit of a flap. She had no name still when this happened (we were calling her chestnut filly, how original) so she earned the name Nozy. Her show name was Everybody's Business.
There was another one who was born with full size ears. Her barn name: Ears.
There's a mare up here named Legal Fees. I really like that one.
There was a mare in Ct named Dad's Mercedes. My dad always thought that was really funny.
I was working with a pony when I was fourteen or so. She was chestnut with a thick white blaze and four white socks up to her knees and hocks. We named her Short Sleeves because she looked like she had on a t-shirt.

I rode at Shep's barn as a kid-Trucker was the COOLEST horse ever!
I agree, Al Capony is just not toppable. I remember Sho Nuff Tuff Stuff, if it's the same one /infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif Retirement Fund was another cute one.
My horse's show name now is Otsuka-terrible for announcers, but has a cool story: When my trainer bought him at 3 off the track, she named him Pookah (for the invisible white rabbit in the movie Harvey-I think it's the best horse name of all time, but I'm a little prejudiced). She couldn't come up with a show name for him, and finally was flipping through one of her mom's interior design catalogs. Saw an ad for a lighting company called Otsuka and thought it sounded cool. Fast-forward to us buying him, 15 years later. My dad bought some stock in an electronics company shortly after we bought the horse. Got the annual report-they had just bought out the original Otsuka company. Creepy.

I really like the name Elsie Fenimore. I always wondered what it meant and then in one Chronicle it said that that was Elsbeth's grandmother.

Actually, that is not true, and that is not what the Chronicle said. If I remember correctly, and actually I've never had this conversation with Elsbeth who I went to high school with and showed with all summer, but she bought Elsie from Sandra Brown, who had given her the name. I believe it does have something to do with a grandmother, but I tend to think it also was the name of a boat maybe? I'm not sure. I'll ask her next time I talk to her.
I rode an eq horse in my junior years whos name remains my favorite. She was Comic Relief, nicknamed Giggle in the barn.

When I bought Figgy, I knew he was registed with the JC as "Bugler" but I'd never caught his barn name. As we pulled away I decided to try and see if he had SOMETHING better, and asked what his barn name was "oh, we call him Figgy because he liked Fig Newtons when he was a baby". Yay! rad barn name! so on the way home, 3 hour drive, I was trying to think of a name, and planning his event career. I was like "and in our cooler we can bring Fig NEwtons, they're healthy, right? Its not just a cookie - its fruit and cake" hence Notjustacookie.
However we did not have much luck with his show career under that name. so we're considering changing it to "Fueled By Ramen" now that he is owned by a college student who pays all his bills. (Its the name of a record company too)

Oh my god! HuntJump, we've met. I rode Scarlett for two years of walk trot, a year of cross bar and a year of short stirrup. We met at Brickhouse at some point but I was twelve or thirteen at the time. Did you have Rhett too? He belonged to a little girl after Scarlett went back to you. (I think that timeline is right, but as I said, it's been a while) We called him Tuffy but I'm sure that the barn named was changed a couple of times. Kids, first horses, name changes.... A girl that rode with us in Blythewood (a friend, she rode Kate before she moved to Atlanta) lived in Charleston and either rode there or talked about it a lot. There was a better known medium that began showing in 1993 which is why the Cantwells began using their pony's registered name.

We met one of the principals at Netscape many years ago in Ireland, who'd had the presence of mind to bail a year after their IPO. My all time favorite was Way Cool, Jr. until I read one of these threads where someone mentioned Juan Connamera (spelling not right! I can't get it right in my head!). Serengeti~ Awww! You were a "Scarlett kid" too! /infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif Geez...I shudder to think how many younguns she taught to ride~ such a saint! /infopop/emoticons/icon_razz.gif Would you believe that I took her to a little schooling show 2 weeks back for a friend of mine's little girl to show in her first walk trot class? I officially retired her in January, although she hadn't been ridden since last October...and that pony trucked around like it was nothing! /infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif Hard to believe she's almost 40! LOL /infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif I am SO grateful to the owners of Brickhouse for letting me have her back...would you believe that I found out a few months ago from the people I got her from in Atlanta in '82...that they traded an old car for her!?! LOL! /infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif
As for Rhett, yes, I had him too...he was a neat little pony. For the life of me, I can't remember our show name for him...that's gonna drive me nuts! Nat, do you remember? /infopop/emoticons/icon_confused.gif Any idea what happened to him? The people I sold him to contacted me a few years back & I took him to try & sell, but wound up having to send him back to the barn down the road where they were keeping him...it was really sad...the little girl just discarded him because he wasn't "fancy" enough. I told them when they bought him that he wasn't "fancy"~ just a good safe first pony to learn on! ARGH! /infopop/emoticons/icon_mad.gif
Such a small world isn't it? It's neat how these ponies go from barn to barn, owner to owner...and how everyone winds up connected in some way or another... /infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif SUZ

I really hope that I can find my Pony! I agree Suz that it is so amazing that we always seem to connect in some way or another! Oh how I want my pony back...I hope he is still alive...he would be like 32 years old now. I last saw him at a Sea Island show at DeerCreek in January of '97. I was so very pregnant with my son (who was born in Feb). I would have stolen him then if I could...but he was still showing strong and winning everything! Please if anyone knows of my Sho' Nuff Tuff Stuff....LET ME KNOW!!! I will scan some pic's of him when I had him and post them! Natalie Kimball

Put me down as another vote for "Ponydotcom" /infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif
I am not sure if there are more than one Ponydotcoms out there, but the one I saw at WEF one year was a POA with BIG ole spots on his butt - true blanket, not roany like a lot of POAs - made the "dot" part even cuter /infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif
Aside from all my horse's show names, which naturally I like the best, /infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif my favorite was the name that was already taken... A filly by Tsunami Slew, out of Stage Door Betty... We wanted to call her "Taming of the Slew" /infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif
Other faves outside the h/j world were Tuffernhel by Tuff Stuff and Redlightstop and Greenlightgo, both by Traffic Cop, and one of my all time favorite horses "Two's Not Enough" by Three Martinis.

Oh my god! Scarlett is alive! Wow. that actually brings tears to my eyes. That wonderful wonderful pony. Well there were two problems with Rhett, one was that he wasn't the fancy pony the kid decided she wanted AND he got her number. He would canter around the corner, drop the shoulder and dump her every time. (she just didn't want to admit that when they went to sell him I'm sure)Rhett adn I spent some quality time together /infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Nov. 8, 2001, 11:01 AM
I've only been able to name two of my guys. First one was Spill The Beans , Bean for short. He was my first pony and when we got him he was skinny and ugly. I called him Ben but every teased me that he looked like a "Bean" so it stuck /infopop/emoticons/icon_razz.gif
Second one was Galica our baby, had to be a "G" name and her barn name is Gali (mom is Kalibrie) and so it's like "Gatica" the movie but with an "l". O.k, o.k, I just thought it sounded neat.
I didn't name Tin, he was named by his breeders. He got his name because he used to chase him mom around with a bag of tin cans (trail class prop) as a baby so he was names Tin Can Cody . The Cody part was from his daddy.
We have Top Flite who used to be King Pin origionally and then Top Flight (he's a jumper) but we changed it to spell it like the golf ball brand.
We had Beyond Belief (TB mar hunter), Misty Moo (FAT pony), Smokin Brimstone (small jumper with an attitude) and we have Kalibrie (WB mare who ahsn't yet found her calling /infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif )

My daughter's first pony came to us as Whinny the Pooh and she (at age 4) insisted on naming her Queenie, so it stuck eventually and that is still her name (pony's 27 now /infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif) Second pony, Haflinger that had to be named by the first letter of her dam's name, so got stuck with Sisi (meaning smile in german), then leased a few, Gisi (god knows what that means)Amore (say the e like an a), Aragon, and then came upon our 6 yr old appendix, called Timbukto because he was shipped to or through every state in the country before he was 5. But we renamed him Braveheart b/c he will jump anything xc no matter what speed, can jump anything from a standstill too. /infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif kinda bad names, but I think its just our thing.

I would love to have an update on him and possibly a pic if you have/can get one! The way to know if it is the same pony: Does he have a fairly large scar on his right hind leg. Around the gaskin area. He had this when I got him...it would be there still today. (An old barbwire accident before I got him I suppose.) I miss my old man and would love to see him again! If they ever want to sell/retire, please let me know! He will always have a special place in my heart. was a lesson horse where I used to teach. It was perfect for him and I liked the Star Trek reference.
I also knew a nice white medium pony mare named Snowbird. Another perfect match of name to horse.
We have a huge black draft cross that I wanted to name "Angus Humongous" (think angus cattle) but hubby protested. He suggested something to do with feet because the horse would always rest his feet on things (usually the lowest board on the fence, which made hubby nuts). We named him "Foot Perfect" which people who read Capt. Phillips' articles recognize immediately. Fortunately, the horse is a good performer...
The horse I ride now was named "MudShark" when we got him. Ugh. We renamed him "LandShark". Saturday Night Live junkies recognize that immediately. I had someone walk up to me and say, "I'm just a dolphin ma'am" and I almost fell off with laughing so hard. It is so fun when people get it. /infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Tuffy is teaching a little girl who weighs all of 40 pounds to ride now. He is perfect for her since he trots just the right amount and then walks for her. As I said it I was so overcome with the giggles, I like to have never gotten his name out properly. And this was all over the loudspeaker system! /infopop/emoticons/icon_eek.gif

Anyway I call her Folly, as everyone told me that taking her was a "foolish idea"..that there is no such thing as a free horse!
I've thought of showing her as Didn't Costa Penny, but I'm kinda on the fence about using it. Also... Lucky Me (hence the sn) or Little Bit Lucky... Tried to think of something with "free" in it....
but I really like the Didn't Costa Penny!

How about "Gift Horse"?

My first pony, a small sorrel and white pinto with a watch eye ( made me realize that 'watch eye watch out' is true!) was named Kap Tin Krunch, Thunder Pony for short /infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif Pony would jump the moon or plant you on your a** /infopop/emoticons/icon_razz.gif
When my sister got her pony, we wanted something kind of 'girly' since she was a pretty little grey mare. We ended up making our own pony prefix for her! She was TP's Thumbelina- the TP standed for Thunder Pony. She was the love of his life so it was perfect /infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif
Both have been sold and had their names changed /infopop/emoticons/icon_mad.gif
(If anyone from RI has heard of the little paint let me know! That was where we sold him to to the cutest little girl ever who fell in love with him at first sight /infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif )

Could it be that you know my "Tuffy"!!!!???
I am going to kick my scanner around and see if I can get it to work. I've got some great pictures of him! I would love to see him now. He is actually older than that. When I bought him in '85 he was "supposedly" 16. So that would make him...what...32 or so. I really do miss him a lot. I've been trying to find him for about the past 10 years or so...what a wonderful thing technology is. If it is him, let them know that any time they want to sell/retire him to PLEASE let me know. There is nothing in the world I wouldn't do to have him back! Thanks, Natalie

..I just thought of a cute name (or at least I think so /infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif )
It's another one for the parent(s) who always said they would NEVER buy a horse for their kid (yup, count me in!), and it's a variation on "Never Say Never" which I know has been done:
"Famous Last Words"

HSM count me in that group as well. Along with never a horse was never a truck and trailer. Serengeti now has an F250 and sundowner gooseneck so that he may ride in style. /infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

My horse's registered name (TB) is Key Evidence (aka The Beast). I think it's cool. And another TB that my racehorse owner friend has is Easy On The Ice. I would take that horse just for the name! Helps that he is also a gorgeous 17 hand grey...

Magic Socks
Not for a pony name, but a horse name. Imagine a mare named Magic Socks and you have this horse.
No locker room speeches. No playbooks. No contracts or free agents. Not even a word spoken between teammates. Doesn't that make it the greatest of all team sports?
