View Full Version : MissD REALLY Needs your Prayers

Tin
Feb. 2, 2002, 11:30 AM
Tri-mo posted this on another board and I thought I'd post this here too because MissD posted on here as well:

I don't even know how to begin.
MissD's been in a bad car accident, and she is in the hospital.
But please pray for her.
She is one of the best people I've ever known.

This is the latest update on her condition:

"Latest update as of 3:30.- Miss D is in critical condition with a brain stem injury. Recovery is unknown at this time. Miss D was travelling alone and lost control of her car, due to weather conditions and hit a tree."

From this thread at Equiman (http://www.equiman.com/cgi-bin/ubb/Forum1/HTML/005765.html)

Please, please think of MissD and her family at this time.

Please keep the prayers coming, here's an update:

On behalf of all of the Turnout peeps (My Little Mischief, Lauren, Zim, Topaz, OLP Freak, Spyraltryp) and Miss D's family, I want to thank you guys for all your notes of good wishes. I will be sure to pass them on.
There has been no updates through the night, but we're on our way to the stable, so I'll give you an update on our return.

I have printed off this thread so the girls can read it this morning, and we will be sure to pass it on to Dee and her family.

As I am sure your cards would be appreciated, I will see where the best location to mail them would be.

Thanks again,
ponymom

Please keep the prayers coming

Here's a little bit more info from Barb off equiman:

Yesterday my friend who lives on the 4th Line Road near Kemptville called me to tell me about the terrible high winds and bad road conditions near her place on Fri. evening. A young girl lost control of her car near my friend's home, slammed into a tree and had to be airlifted to hospital where she is in a coma. I now realize the young girl was MissD. It sure is a small world. MissD must have been returning from riding at her beloved Turnout Stables.

This is so damned sad.

<BLOCKQUOTE class="ip-ubbcode-quote"><font size="-1">quote:</font><HR>First of all I would like to thank everyone of you for all of your best wishes.

I will try to give everyone as complete a history of the last week as I can. On Friday Feb. 1st Dina (Miss D) was driving on Donnelly drive and it looks like she lost control of the car and spun out of control, the car flipped on it's side and hit a tree roof first. No one witnessed the accident, but a passerby called 911. We do not know who called 911 but we would like to thank them for stopping and helping Dina. The jaws of life were required to get her out of the car and she was air lifted by helicopter to the Ottawa civic hospital.

She was in a coma from the time she arrived at the hospital until now. This coma is not medically induced, it is due to either her swollen brain or a brain injury. We will not know which one until the swelling goes down. They have put a tube in her head to help control the swelling.

Dina is in ICU and she is on a respirator. The respirator is only helping her to breath. As she can breath on her own but not to optimal condition. Visitation to the ICU is limited to immediate family only, when she is transferred to her own room we will let you know.

Dina has had several CAT scans over the last week , they have shown that there is some brain damage the medical terms are, Cerebral Contusion, Diffuse Axonal Injury, and a Midbrain Haemorrhage. All three of these are very serious conditions.

The other injuries she suffered were a dislocated finger, a large cut on her head, and lots of bruises and some scrapes to the back of one hand.

Since being in the hospital Dina has developed a fever and an infection in her bladder and lungs. These are all under control at this time and are not considered a concern right now.

Currently they are trying to get Dina completely off the respirator and remove the tube from her head. This will take several days to do. Today she went 4 hours with out the respirator and they were able to clamp the tube for 1hour and 20 minutes before the pressure got to high..

Once the tube is removed they will be giving Dina a MRI to get a better picture of her brain and to confirm that there is no injury to her neck, so they can remove the collar they currently have on her neck.

On Friday Feb. 8th Dina had two small operations one to put a tube in her stomach in order to feed her and a second for a tracheotomy to help her breath.

My wife went and picked up some cards from the stable today. We will make sure Dina gets everything you send her. Thank you again.

The family is spending a lot of the time at the hospital, so I do not know when I will be able to update you again but we will try to make sure someone will pass the information to this BB.

Everyday we are just waiting for her to wake up. I?m sure all of your prayers and thoughts will help.

Thank you again from all of the family.

another update from her sister Cyndy:

Hello everyone, my name is Cyndy and I am Dina's sister. I wanted to also send my thanks to all of you for your thoughts, prayers and best wishes.
I thought I would send along some good news that as of last night Dina was breathing on her own and was taken off of the respirator.
We are hoping the drain on her head will also be removed in the next few days, she was able to hold her own for 6 hours with the drain clamped yesterday.
She is still in a coma (not drug induced)and has shown no signs of waking up but every day she does not get worse is a good day!

Good news!

EMG update from her brother, Rob.

I just came back from the hospital and Dina OPENED HER EYES for the first time!!!!!!!!!
They were only open little slits and they were only open for about 1 minute but they were open.

They did not open when we went back to see her an hour later. The nurse said it takes a lot of energy for her to open her eyes and we may not see her do it again for another day or so.

Will keep you posted.

Rob

another update from her brother Rob:

Here is a small update on D. She was moved from ICU to an observation area on Monday night. Visitation is still restricted. She opens here eyes for a little while every day. We are not sure how much she can see if anything. Also she is somewhat aware of what is going on around her but not much. You could see in her face that see was afraid when they put her in the elevator.
She had an MRI and they found no damage to her neck so they were able to remove the collar on her neck. The MRI also did not show any more damage to her brain than what was already found in the CAT scans.

She still has a tube in her head to let fluid out of her head. They are still trying to remove this but they may have to leave it there forever. You will not be able to see it as it will be under the skin and it will drain in to her abdomen.

Not much more I can tell you other than she seems to be improving every day by a little bit. But it doesn't matter how small the improvements are as long as they are improvements.

As soon as she is allowed visitation from friends we will let you know.

Thank you all for your wishes both on this BB, and the COTH BB and all those who mailed in cards to the stable.

We miss you D, keep going babe!

I happen to work (director, corporate communication) for a specialized healthcare company that specializes in the treatment of traumatic brain injury.

Brain injury is very odd - your brain doesn't "regenerate" or "heal" in the sense that other organs do. It's quite literally just gray matter, and once the damage is done, the "healing" comes from the person actually having to "relearn." It can be a long hard road, but the outcome can often be really impressive, depending on the severity of the injury.

I would highly recommend someone pass this along to Miss D's brother ... make sure, once she's medically stable, that she is sent to a post-acute treatment facility that specializes in TBI. I will be happy to speak directly to her brother/family, and of course must recommend our facility here in Arkansas, as the outcome is spectacular.

Also, hippotherapy will probably be the key to Miss D's recovery, when she wakes up. Make sure you push for that! Horses are healers - we all know that!

Best to you,

Robby

Zim> I tried to send it to D's bro but it seems his e-mail address doesn't exist so I resent it to her sister today. Along with Robby's website and address. Could you make sure she gets it if you see her anytime soon?

Hi everyone,

Yes Dina can now have visitors. But please remember that she gets tired very very easy.

Also everyone should also be aware that Dina is still in a coma even though she can open here eyes and move her arms. When her eyes are closed she is sleeping. Dina has rated as high as 10 on the Coma scale most days she is a 7 or 8 have a look at the following web sites for information on the coma scale.
http://www.medstudents.com.br/neuro/neuro4.htm
http://www.biact.org/infartcl/glasgow.html

We are sure she is some what aware of her surroundings although she does not react to commands. So if you ask her something most likely she will not respond but we are told she does hear you, so please be careful what you say around her and please try not to be emotional in the room with her. I know it is hard not to be emotional when you first see her. So if you have to just walk into the hall for a break.

Also (i'm going to blame this on her parents) Dina has had a hair cut on Saturday, so don't think you are in the wrong room when you see her with a brush cut.

At first the doctor's wanted as little stimulation as possible until her brain stop swelling. But now they would like to start stimulating her a little at a time about 5 - 10 minutes for every hour or so. We are trying to stimulate all of her senses touch, smell, taste, hearing and sight. With the sight there is not must we can do yet as she can not see yet. For taste right now it is just tooth paste and mouth wash as she can not swallow very well yet. For smell we will start bringing things in, including horse smelling items.

I am sure she would love to see as many of you as possible but please only a few people at a time. Visitation at the hospital is between 10 am and 9 pm with a rest period from 1 pm until 2:30 pm. She is in room 740 of the civic campus of the Ottawa Hospital in Ottawa, Ontario,Canada.

Tin sorry about the email address I will fix it the one here works .
