Tin, I was so busy yesterday, I couldn't get back to congratulate you. I am so excited for you. There is nothing like a new baby to throw in the mix. She is lovely and mommy looks so into her.
Thank you everyone for your suggestions on how to handle this. I never thought of the tv angle and it is worth a big think.
I will happily tell each and every one of you his name, where he is from, what he is like, etc, but in private. I am sitting back waiting on the filly and then I will try a course of action.
Canter, he is not a CEF, OEF, OHJA, CSHA, CWBA, member. I called them all. He isn't that stupid.

Well not like I haven't had my butt planted in this chair for the last week, but I got waylayed from the thread and now have come back.
This whole accident thing is really grating on my nerves. Still going to physio three times a week.. which means I have two days to go play with pony and ride, if I can get out both days, plus one day/weekend to go look at horses.
And everytime I think I'm healing better, and could maybe start to think about possibly potentially going to physio twice, something else comes along and hurts like he!! and reminds me why I'm at physio three times a week..
And our chinook broke yesterday and it actually snowed here! Yak! Snow!!! So now we have snow on the ground for the first time in over a week. Here's hoping this won't last long!!

Hopefully our mare will emulate Tin's Brie and go 2 weeks over! she's due on Monday and is the size of a round bale, the baby's dropped already to the point that her legs only look around a foot long! I know she's ready but I'm not!!! my partner doesn't arrive home from 6 weeks in Ocala until Tuesday and I told him there is no way I am dealing with the birth by myself ..... her last year's foal was born dumb and died after a few days (with her previous owner) ... I keep telling her wait a little longer, and she just keeps looking at me with the smuggest look on her face!

We've experienced a birth on this thread and now we enjoy the privilege of claiming an amputation.
Apparently, all of Rogers @home customers (which includes me) were left stranded without Internet access yesterday as their fibre optic cable trunk was SEVERED in Buffalo. /infopop/emoticons/icon_eek.gif
Must share with all my BB compadres: last night, Heidi-in-training had speech night at school. Whilst she, the gifted riding academic, spoke about the myth of Pegasus, a classmate gave a speech about -- Tim Hortons! /infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif /infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif /infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif I just about peed my pants! /infopop/emoticons/icon_eek.gif
The vital stats: there are 2001 Tim Hortons in Canada and, can you believe it, 120 in the U.S.

Bosshoss>Snow! say it ain't so!! We are still having wonderful weather here, you can keep the snow!
When I was in georgetown last year I couldn't believe the number of tim hortons. One at the Petro, one in town and one on the other side of the 401. I mean georgetown isn't THAT big. I think of those 2001 tim hortons, 1000 are in ontario.
And as for interesting initials my friend's name is natalie (often called nat) her initials are NAT. I think that's pretty cool as mine are CHB. Oh and speaking of middle names (well kind of!), another friend, Kelly, her middle name is Jean...we call her Kelly Jean, Jelly Bean! /infopop/emoticons/icon_razz.gif
Tin

LCRScott, what about CTHS? Cdn TB Horse Society?
416 675 3602 maybe he's there...
and, good news, the CTHS will be giving out some very nice awards this year, even better than last year, to top TBs competing in hunter, jumpers and eventing (that's in Ontario)Need to be registered TBs!!
Speaking of Hortons- I had to get up really really early to get AFR to a show (this was when he was EventFred, and I guess I hadn't quite woken up before driving my Suburban through the take out window..wacked one of those bright yellow cement things...It's STILL bent over!!THAT woke me up!!
and Worthy - this is my last JUNO rant for this year - I don't mean to suggest that the musicians who have won Junos are not talented, or deserving, it is the process, the hows and why of the whole thing that is so slimy..hope the bad hair period is behind your husband..

Say it ain't so! Don't let it die! Too many PITAs and near-PITAs on you know where to have intelligent conversations!!
Heidi- tht kid- was his dad opening a franchise or something? What a wierdo?! Or gee, is it politically polite to still say things like that?? Did he spill the franchise $$ on Timmy's? a cool 2Mil. Yea-huh.
OK well I wan't going to tell, but for the sake of the thread, I have my sights set on a new horsie for me.
She is 16~16.1 and has an inch or two left in her, 4 or 5 or 6 (the breeder can't seem to remember he is a dear but rather older gentleman retired Dr.)
Bred for showjumping, but I won't tell what breed in case we play the what-breed-is-this game.
We had her half brother in the barn for a long while.
Orangey chestnut with the dark liver mane and tail- just like Moody!!!! And a dorsal stripe, can you get over it? So cute. And a long wide stripe (but not blaze), but the edges are fuzzy, with white hairs in the chestnut.
HUGE head, but very thin, has to gain a good 200# of groceries or more, (he underfeeds them which is fine by me as she could have grown way to fast otherwise) great movement and seems really athletic. Small ears and a small short mouth makes her kinda ugly but endearing, but she looks class all the way.
Very very very green broke (gee, I nearly thought I broke her there!) but so quiet and willing.
Hubby goes out to see her with me tomorrow.
OK, so not so exciting as all the darling foals that are popping up everywhere, but I am SO stoked.. this will be my first personal horse since Moody, and only my third ever!

It is SO boring, I come thisclose to falling asleep everytime the lights turn off and a movie starts playing. But after tomorrow I am done with the in class stuff! So far I have been too scared to schedule driving lessons. I want to drive so that I don't have to be dependent on others, but /infopop/emoticons/icon_eek.gif I actually HAVE TO DRIVE! It scares me. Just one more day, then March Break, time to sleep! I, unlike the rest of my friends, am going absolutely nowhere during Marchg Break. But that's fine with me, cuz I like doing nothing! AS for Timmie Ho's, my town has a population of 100,000 and at least 7 Tim's locations. How sad is that? The really bad part is that they all do roaring trade constantly, while every other type of coffee place goes belly up.
This weekend, I am doing non-horsey activities... taking a break for a couple days and am instead doing prom shopping stuff with my friends. We get to go dress up the guys, it's going to be a blast! /infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Energies are flagging! I cannot have waded through 39 pages to see it slip through your fingers! Heidi, we need some inspirational prose. Where are you, car 59?
I'd have been here sooner, but Alzheimer's and passwords are mutually incompatible. However, the chips are down, so I'm officially now HALTEREGO! I like it, it might have to stick (especially as the previous names and passwords obviously didn't!)
Fred, the icon thing has infected my computer as well...it has nothing to do with our keyboard prowess.
Tin, your story is better than any soap opera. Congrats on your filly, she's lovely!
40 pages is a mere drop in a frozen bucket for the Canadians, who weather minus forty temperatures in shorts and T-shirts. The boys in blue were out today in Toronto on their trusty steeds, where, I must admit, the steam was truly venting from their nostrils. A very handsome sight, our mounted police with their flared coats. Of course, the coats were just for the horses.
There's a light in the darkness (a Blue Light, to be precise)!

The Rogers thing was soooo frustrating and I've forgotten how to dial out.
Tin, that foal is a dear.
My initials are not very interesting. LCRS or LCRC depending on whether I'm into being the Mrs.
How about nicknames. I have several as my sister is the queen of nicknames. She used to run around singing 'Scottie let a softie" to the Scotties little softie commercial ditty. Really got me going. A couple of my friends call me Miss Laurel for some reason they only know about. My son is Stinky La Rue, Chocolate Boy or Peanutbutter boy. Go figure.
And of course, our horses have them. Hannah is called Bunny(lloonngg beautiful WB ears you know) and Newman is Newmy, Newms or Big Guy.
Anyone else or is it just my silly family. /infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Hey!
Don't feel bad about the driving school thing...I could've been licensed before graduated licensing, but didn't have the thirty bucks at the time so...here I am, 23, and I took the four day crash course driving in-class thing over the Christmas break. (Mmmm, hanging around with 29 16-year-old gum chewers...was I ever like that? J/K!!!)
The pathetic thing about me is I actually own a car...but I make my husband chauffeur. I think every year that goes by, I get more scared of being on the road. (And more scared for others...) Oh well. My test is on the 29th, and I have a lot of practising to do...
Have you watched any of the Goofy movies yet? /infopop/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif

MissD> where are you taking your drivers ed? I took it in Bells Corners (beside the McDonalds) and it was sooo boring. I almost died, I swear! Scared the beezebers out of me the first time, didn't know why the car stopped /infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

And I noticed that there is not a single place other than the Tack Shop to purchase yarn!!! /infopop/emoticons/icon_razz.gif
stunk!!!!!!!
Now that Tin has a lovely/huge/chestnut filly, I'm going to tell a story...
I've been raised with broodmares around me, and until 2 years ago, had never even seen a misrepresentation. Two years ago, however, BOTH of my mares had problems. The first one (who had already had 2 foals unassisted), started rolling shortly after her water broke--I was sleeping in the barn and that is what woke me up. I noticed that her rectum was protruding with each contraction, and stuck the ol' arm "up there" and found the little foot that was stuck, and pulled it down. The foal was born within the next 2 minutes---Sweetie. Drew(this past year--same mare)wasn't a problem other than the mare needed some help getting him out because he was too big---Oh yeah, he did get his elbo caught on her pelvis, and I had to pull the leg forward.
The other mare (of 2 yrs ago), was in much greater danger. Once again sleeping in the barn--this time a student was there with her mom (envision 3 people sleeping on haybales), the mare's water broke, and I got them up, was video taping it for some other students. I was looking through the camera, put it down, looked through the camera again, put it down---I couldn't believe what I saw. There was one leg coming out UPSIDE DOWN!!!!!! I got down in the bloody/messy straw, and once again stuck the ol' arm up there, and wouldn't ya know, the stupid mare (she's dumber than a brick--I call her stupid/dumb ass/and a wide variety of similar names---don't even recall what her real name is--She's a WB) stands up!!! Since I was almost up to my shoulder, I almost lost an arm. Yelled to student "grab stupid, and don't let her move". Once standing, it was much easier to find where everything was, and I managed to get the other leg forward, and crossed them to torque the baby around into the correct position. Then I left the mare alone. She went back down, and at that point (it was 2am) I was on the phone
with my vet, He asked how long it had been, and suggested I help her because of the trauma. sooooo, I get down behind her, place a foot on each haunch, and wait for a contraction..... Waiting......... So finally I kicked her in the butt, and yelled "push bi+ch!!!!!!" well that worked, and within seconds, I had stupid junior in my lap...Cookie. I really wanted a colt, and I frantically looked for a penis, exclaiming "you'd better be a f-ing colt"---then to my dismay "it's a GD chestnut filly". As she dried, I realized she had black points and was going to be light bay -- some consolation. The next year, the stupid mare popped it out w/in a 30min time period when I went to the house to take a shower...
This was the year after my former broodmare had broken her leg---don't want to relay THAT story again.
It's all about management, and knowledge. I'd never done anything like that before, but knew
how things were supposed to be, plus being dilligent on my foal-watch hours. Don't let these
stories scare you, those are 2 misreps.(in the same stinking year) out of hundreds of births that I've seen that were normal, but I have healthy/happy babies and moms out of it. If you're not experienced, some vets will board broodmares, and do the foaling for you--it's expensive, but worth it!!!!!!

Tin - I'm going to DTSM for Driver's Ed. I'm taking the calssroom stuff in Kanata, because the Bell's Corners location didn't have enough people to fill a class. For the actual driving, I'm taking it from Bell's Corners because the place is close to my school.
About Tim Horton's - My town has a population of, oh, about 2000. There is a Tim Horton's and a McDonald's and they are both ALWAYS packed! ALWAYS! I think the people of Kemptville have no life... /infopop/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif

this morning actually, the van is coming to take one of my fillies (the sweet and gorgeous FLEA) to her new owner (the equally sweet and gorgeous CityFilly). I've already had a big cry this morning. But I couldn't have picked a nicer person to buy one of my babies! When you breed horses to sell, the best you can hope for is that they go to someone kind and loving, with the resources to take care of them. Good luck to Flea and to CityFilly. Love to you both.

Well filly was boot scooting around the paddock today doing lead changes gallore! It's quite humourus to watch because Galli takes off at a pure gallop with mom frantically on her tail nickering and trying to cutting her off into the snow banks when mommy needs a rest /infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif
She been haltered but leading lessons start tomorrow. Should be fun (sarcasim) and will definatly give an update (whether you want it or not /infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif ) on that unless I end up breaking my arms and can't type /infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif You'll be happy to know that our farm manager who has over 30 years with babies will be assisting, thank God! /infopop/emoticons/icon_razz.gif

Tin, I love your foal! Babies are so cute. Well, the horse variety anyway. /infopop/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif You hafta promise to keep us all updated on how Galli and Brie are doing. I don't mind a little too much info. I've never seen a new foal. /infopop/emoticons/icon_frown.gif There's only been one baby at our barn the whole time I've been riding there, and that was before I rode more than once every three months. So I have missed out on the whole baby thing. Although my coach might breed the horse I ride this spring. Abby babies would be adorable! Anyways, that was total rambling, but I'm bored.
Happy Birthday CANTER! /infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif I am singing the Hpapy Birthday song as I type. Can't you feel the love? My doggy says hi too. well, this is my first post on this legendary thread. i just wanted to post because i just read fred's last post... well, i just talked to her too actually, and flea is just great! she seems to have moved in and taken over actually, i think she'll be completely in charge by the end of the week. so, my weekend's been pretty darn good so far, and there's still sunday!
it's true that selling babies, especially special ones like flea, must be the hardest part of breeding, even though it's the whole point of it. my heart is with fred, but we both feel good about flea's new home!

Okay, here's a riddle for a Saturday night; modified with a horsey theme.
>
1. There are 5 houses in five different colours.
2. In each house lives a person with a different nationality.
3. These five owners drink a certain type of beverage, smoke a certain brand of cigar and keep a certain pet.
4. No owners have the same pet, smoke the same brand of cigar or drink the same beverage.
THE QUESTION IS: WHO OWNS THE HORSE?
Hints:
- the Brit lives in the red house.
- the Swede keeps dogs as pets.
- the Dane drinks tea.
- the green house is on the left of the white house.
- the green house's owner drinks coffee.
- the person who smokes Pall Mall rears birds.
- the owner of the yellow house smokes Dunhill.
- the man living in the centre house drinks milk.
- the Norwegian lives in the first house.
- the man who smokes blends lives next to the one who keeps cats.
- the man who keeps fish lives next to the man who smokes Dunhills.
- the owner who smokes BlueMaster drinks beer.
- the German smokes Prince.
- the Norwegian lives next to the blue house.
- the man who smokes blend has a neighbour who drinks water.
Einstein wrote this riddle this century. He said that 98% of the world would not solve it.

Pre-Novice Hunter
Novice Hunter
Low Hunter
Open Hunter
Clear Round Jumper
Open Jumper
and sometimes some eqs or other stuff. I'll try to get back to you soon on the official class list. Do you need a phone number too? I think they usually just fax my coach the entry forms.

o.k, I have a question for everyone:
What do you do for a living (and/or spouse)? And why that profession?
I must admit, I'm having some MAJOR thoughts about entering into the wrong course at school. I took a Micky Mouse design course last year because I HAD to go to college and I had no lcue what I wanted to do. In that course we studied drafting which I fell in love with so this year I took an architect technology course which I liked at first but now I hate.
Problem is I just wasted 2 years of college and I still have no idea what I want to do.
I'm passing and do well when I try but my heart isn't into it. I haven't told my parents yet, I want to get some appointments in with some of the counsellers at school first because they will kill me. I wanted to take a year off after high school to try and figure it out but parents wouldn't let me which is why I jumped into the courses I did.
Anyways, I just want to get a feel of what you guys do and more importantly why you chose to do that. Thanks!!
MissD> your right, we've had enough snow! Snow snow go away!
Sarba> I don't convert my measurements because it keeps you thinking /infopop/emoticons/icon_razz.gif
I still don't know what I want to be when I grow up!!! I changed my major 5x while in college--math/art/psych/pre-vet--and ended up with a Biochem degree. I've professed in Mixology (at several bars in the Albany/Saratoga area), and Equine Fecology. Hubby is an environmental Engineer...
B.G.M. heidi
Mar. 12, 2001, 01:53 PM
Tin, sometimes the only way to ever determine what you want to do is by determining what you DON'T want to do. Unfortunately, the marketplace is becoming more competitive and it's hard to break into a profession if you lack experience and/or an education.
For a decade I was a suit in the entertainment industry - in both animation and live action. I've also dabbled with advertising and in the fashion industry. My entry into the entertainment industry was completely accidental. I have a B.A. in english and women's studies and otherwise completely unemployable in any other industry. /infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif
Loved the pace of the industry, hated the politics. I've been a SAHM for three years but am planning to return shortly to the workforce - doing what, haven't a clue. Again, I've determined, after a decade in the industry, what I DON'T want to do.
Hans is a software engineer - no degree, barely finished grade 12; unusually lucky in that he has a natural aptitude and started at an opportune time (15 years ago). He's one of the lucky few who are passionate about their jobs. He's rather 'ministerial' in that he answered a calling of sorts. He is, though, exceedingly busy and facing IPO deadlines so under tremendous stress.
I would encourage you Tin to remain in school; I do believe in the value of education for the sake of an education - I think it's often confusing and frustrating to expect that you'll determine, by virtue of a field of study, what you'll do for the rest of your life.
Study something which interests you, make the commitment to an education, and be open to opportunities as they arise.
Good luck with the counsellors and your parents.

sometimes the best way to find out what you want to do is by finding out what you DON'T want.
I've been a model( some stories there), an actress (two bit dahling, don't kid myself) television writer and producer, newspaper columnist, pr flack for government (most LOATHED job of all - I'd rather be a waitress!) - put myself through university working fulltime as a flight attendant - (actually really liked it - even I can be pleasant for 6 hrs straight when I'm going to be spending the weekend in London!

Well Galli had her first halter lesson. Man what a feisty little girl she is! And the attitude on her, her tail was wringing the whole lesson she was mad. Before introducing the butt rope, we practised standing. In which she threw herself 3 times and then stood like a perfect angel (tail still going). Then with the butt rope she did very well, threw herself once and then stood there, mad. It took maybe a minuit or two to get her walking on lead and then she was released back to mommy. All was safe, and all went fairly well. Thanks to the barn manager who did most the work and re-taught us how to do it (it's been about 5 years since I've handled a baby).
Didn't get any pictures of her in her little leather halter because we were all busy but will hopefully get some later down the road.

With a biochem degree, you need a Masters as well to get a decent job unless you like working in a basement with no windows and crappy perks making just above min. wage... Unless you want to get into pharmaceutical sales (ie. drug dealer)... I was burnt out, and couldn't face another classroom. I'm sure there are more job opportunities out there, but when I graduated, the economy was in such a slump... I also had horses at the time, and my Mixology job was providing me with more than enough $$$ to be quite comfy. Now I'm into fecology, and my biochem background has done me proud!!!!!JMHO

Ok, Silly Mommy, i have to know more about this fecology thing - my daughter is mortified when I go out to the barn and bring back horse poop samples for my colleague who teaches courses in fungal ecology; apparently horse dung is a great substrate for all kinds of fascinating fungi (I know, that sounds like an oxymoron but some people find it fascinating...!) But what are you doing with the stuff??
BTW, with a biochem background, why not go into microbial ecology? If hubby is an environmental engineer, his company probably needs a microbial ecologist from time to time for consulting work...
I do jest a bit with the fecology thing, but I do stockpile the stuff, and sell it to gardeners in the spring.
As for my occupation, I consider myself a Mother/mucker/wife/trainer/teacher/babysitter (horses and children-students)/slave/maid/equine midwife, (not necessarily in that order)WHERE WOULD I HAVE TIME FOR A "REAL" JOB??? I own/run a large equine facility, and do just about everything myself...

I also coordinate the ecology undergraduate program, and our graduates do quite a wide array of jobs - some work for government agencies eg doing species inventories of natural habitats; others work for non-profit agencies like Nature Conservancy, working in the area of habitat preservation and just basically understanding the role(s) speces play in their natural communities; others work for consulting firms eg when a company or govt is required to undergo an Environmental impact Assessment for a proposed project, they hire an environmental consulting firm that in turn hires ecologists; or they work in the area of environmental education; others become research assistants, or go on to advanced degrees and conduct their own research; or other types of jobs. It's quite varied, really - many universities have coop ecology programs that give you some job experience while taking your degree.
Of course, the really lucky ones end up having their own stable and working as a professional rider, LOL, but in the meantime, while they're waiting for that to happen! they have something to fall back on...!
that in my spare time, I should get my teacher's certification, so that I could possibly teach high school Biology some day when I can't lift a muck bucket anymore...

And another thing....the big advantage of ecology as a field over say, biochem, is that there is a much greater likelihood that you'ld get to work outside! at least part of the year, which is a big deal to me...BTW, i know Toronto has a good Ecology program, but i don't know about universities in Ottawa - a lot of can universities have Environmental Science programs as well, which are related but with a more human focus than Ecology, which is more concerned with the non-human species and their habitats...

The husband of one of my best friends owns a long distance trucking company - my husband is a musician - and we found we had sooo much in common.. mostly the isolation - the having to make all the decisions on your own, and deal with all the little and sometimes not so little emergencies on your own. Wishing they'd come home. Wishing they'd leave... Independance is great, isolation, not so great.
If I could go back, I think I would have pursued the acting more -... but I didn't see that as a "serious" career. The thing I'm pretty sure of is that your job matters less than your quality of life... although I must say that at social gatherings, people were always a LOT more impressed when I answered "television producer" to the question what do you do, than now when I say "breed horses". Unless the other person loves horses..

After a straight and unrelenting month at home, I have been known to instruct, "Can you please go somewhere!?!"
At Hans' Christmas party, one of the dates was employed by my former company, Alliance Atlantis, she commented that, "you know, everyone who gets out of the industry always seem among the happiest people I know".
The Industry always seems so wonderfully glamorous to those 'on the outside'. Truth would probably shock them.

Well I talked to my parents tonight about not liking what I'm studying and they were very supportive in trying to help me figure out what to do. Alot more than I thought. So I'm happy and now the quest begins.....
In other news, we were talking to the owners of Galli's father and he want's to come out this weekend and use Galli as the "poster child" for him. Cool huh? He also offered us the stallion to stand because the person standing him right now is moving to the States and they want to keep him in Canada. No way! Someone would have to be there full time and while both me and my sis has experience with stallions, we have limited knowledge in breeding stallions; totally different ball game!
It would be totally cool to ride him though.... /infopop/emoticons/icon_razz.gif
please don't "stand" the stallion yourself. It can be quite dangerous, and my father broke his back being a little nonchellant with a stud he trusted, but with hormone overload, the trusty steed went into maniac mode...

lol!! well since you asked for it.....
Our barn manager has been having fun with Galli and she is now pretty much completly halter trained thanks to her. She has some great manners but is fiesty!! And has attitude! She was turned out for 15 mins with her leather safety halter on and she bucked, twisted, turned and did pretty much every thing she could to get that thing off her face. And of course when she couldn't shake the thing she pouted, drank and then played. Too cute!!
The stallion's owner is coming to take some pictures of her this weekend and she got her first shots today. She was a doll!

Tin - hearing about Galli reminds me of my last year foal - Leeloo - she was standing up before her back legs were completey out of mom, within 5 minutes of birth she had cantered around the stall and done a few bucks! never minded having the halter put on though - it's actually harder now that she's turning a year, she LOVES to chew on the leather and as soon as you get the halter near her she grabs for it
our first foal of this year is LATE .... we keep thinking that Mona is about to start labour and then she justs sighs and look at you .... with the smuggest look on her face ... every hour of the night she has that same smug look with ears pricked forward .... she's just soaking up all the attention she getting .... maybe tonight?

lol! the first thing the vet did when he saw her was flick her ears and comment she had her mommy's ears! *laugh* same vet who we called afer the birth to check her out and he looked in and said " yep that's a foal" and walked alway!
Her dad is Gambit Z (owned by Elmcroft- Amanda Hay's farm) and stood at Maple Ridge (Elyard Bandy).
We're not exactly sure if we're going to see her or keep her. I think we'll keep her unitl she's 1 or 2 and see what she's like then. I'd love to keep her and work with her though, she'd be a fun ride!

OK, I have thought of a semi lame topic that will hopefully keep our dear thread alive for a little bit longer. Kinda like CPR, I guess. Does anyone remember the first time they rode? Or any specific memories from around the beginning of your horse life? Do share girlies (and Jair!)
One of my funniest memories is the very first hack I went on. It was my first day of riding camp, my second time controlling a horse by myself. We went through a field, and my horse was a big pig and decided he constantly needed to eat. Everytime he stretched his head down to grab a mouthful of grass, I'd get so scared that I'd just jump off! Horse puts head down, D swings leg over saddle and jumps to ground for dear life! My coach was riding on that hack too, and it was a huge pain in the butt for her because I every time I jumped off my horse, she'd have to get off hers, put little me back on, and get back on her horse. This happened 9 times, and 8 times I managed to gracefully land on my feet. The 9th time my foot got caught in the stirrup and I fell on my butt. The whole incident wasn't funny then, but it sends my coach and I into laughing fits now everytime someone brings it up.

our first will probably be the May Bolton. AFR will be doing the Combineds (yeah) and I will have to juggle his showing and his breeding schedules.
Last year, I got a call late at night - he had Hendervale the next day - from a mare owner - apologizing profusely - but needing semen the next day. so, off we went. when I got to the barn, "Fred" was in the aisle being braided and getting a pulled shoe tacked back on, at the same time. as soon as it was done, I loaded him on the trailer, took him to be collected, collected him, loaded him back on the trailer and drove him to Hendervale - did I mention he came 2nd in the U/S?. But a busy day - I'm NOT looking forward to a a repeat of that!

My first show will be the Kemptville College show. It's only a week away! I CANNOT wait! I know it's only a schooling show, but schooling shows are all I can show in due to the money problem. Oh, Tin, my coach hasn't gotten a prize list yet, so no phone number. She thinks entries are due the day of the show, so just show up and you'll be fine! Anyways, I'm not sure who I'll be riding because the horse I've been working with has a sore on her withers from an ill fitting blanket, and having someone ride her drives her insane from pain. I'm kinda disappointed because when I started riding her in October, the goal was to get her ready to show in March. March 25th is the last weekend in March, so if I don't get to show her I won't have reached my goal. /infopop/emoticons/icon_frown.gif But at least I have another packer to show if Abby doesn't get better. The first Triilium show is May 5/6, and it couldn't come fast enough! I wanna go! I'm just the slave at Trillium shows, but they're FUN!!!!
I remember getting up an hour early for a show (several times) to go breed a mare before we loaded Mandarin up, and off we went (being TB we only did live covers)!!! The thing with stallions is that they need to know which job, and when. I remember a woman who wanted me to leave the showgrounds, and come breed her mare at her farm. I said NO!!!!! I shipped him home, and she met us there, where we went through his proper "ritual", and produced a lovely foal.
I was all of about 5, and was riding my "new" pony with my mother (back in the days when she still rode), and we'd had a flood (bigtime--hurricane Agnus) which had washed a great deal of fence away. The ring was intact, but the gate to it was a simple board, tied at both sides (hey, they had other things to worry about), about 3'. Roany Pony was a small, but had this never-ending desire to be in the barn. My mother heard me squeak, and turned to see me on the other side of said gate, and Roany running for the barn!!! First jump for me was a hard one!!!LOL

Let's impress Heidi with our undying devotion (or undying boredom) until she gets back. Keep it alive! /infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif
Memorable first experience: I was 6, had never ridden except the pony ride at a fair, and my parents decided that we should go on a trail ride in Kentucky. So we all hop on board one of the trusty steeds and go walking off towards the trail. My horse decides he really doesn't want to go out again that day, turns around, and trots back to the barn with me hanging on for dear life. I found it amusing- after all, there was a horn to hang onto. My parents were convinced I would develop a fear of horses and decided to sign me up for lessons when we got home. 10 years and way too much $ later, they're regretting that decision big time. /infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Wasn't my first riding experience, but it was in the early years. My mom, brother and I took lessons together at a place where there were stalls at one end of the arena. One winter evening, it was very stormy and there was snow sliding, wind howling etc. I was riding this incredibly bratty (but beautiful) pony and had fallen off a couple of times. All of a sudden, a stallion (I think it was some kind of draft horse) that was there for training broke out of his stall. We dismounted while the stud proceeded to jump over all the jumps the instructor had set up for the lesson. I guess he felt left out and wanted to play too! They moved him to another stall the next day /infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Hi Diane!!
How did you know that my baby was Edwyn! Good guess. I think that I know who you are. I believe we had a short conversation at a show that your barn was hosting. If I am thinking of the same person you were very excited to see Edwyn but I had left him at home that day. Are you who I think you are? Did you ever get to see Edwyn? What did you think? He looks like his dad huh?
OMG I am just so excited that you know who my baby is!!!!!
BTW Edwyn's birthday is March 26. It is getting close!! I can't help but have nightmares about the two and a half weeks I camped at the barn last year in the freezing cold. Finally in the end missing the birth and then being faced with an eviction notice when he was two days old!!! That was the worst experience of my life.
Heidi, buy a three year old!!!! I only say this because of my bad birth experience but other than that I love breeding and plan to do it for the rest of my life!

Willow - you guessed right! I say your boy at the Royal and he is very cute! I didn't see his class as I was at the stalls trying to organize the 2 weanie fillies, yearling colt, 2 year old colt, 2 year old gelding, 3 yr old gelding that we had showing, Dany also showed another 3 yr old and a stallion .... the day was crazy! but very successful! much better than the previous year where I spent the night before in the Emergency ward with BC courtesy of our stallion.
Agree with you that breeding can be very rewarding but very heartbreaking also ... we lost my fillies mom 25 days after birth to colic ... so with our second foal last year we didn't relax for months after!
It is so cool though when you see traits and habits in your baby that are identical to their mom or dad! Leeloo's afraid of her daddy right now as I had her in the groom stall which is right next to daddy's stall, he was down having a nap and started to snore .... she was convinced it was a monster!! they are so funny!! /infopop/emoticons/icon_razz.gif

Diane,
Wow you must have been busy at the Royal! I only had two horses down there and I was extremely busy.
That is so sad about your mare. That was my biggest fear when breeding because Edwyn's mom is my old hunter that I showed for years. When she went lame I was supposed to sell her and continue showing but I just love her way too much and couldn't part with my best friend. That is the story how I got into the wonderful world of breeding.
BTW, I looooove your baby's name. Too cute.
So what kind of things are you doing with her right now? I board at Susan Wood's farm and we don't have an arena. I have been sooo lazy this winter. I absolutley despise the cold and I took off to Florida to visit my sister for a while( she is showing in West Palm). When I came back I found myself itching to do something with my horses and there is just nothing for me to do besides groom. As soon as I can get into the sand ring I will be working with him again but he really hasn't done anything this winter besides grow and become a man!! That is another thing that I must get around to, I am just going to feel really guilty when he has to have that done!
Who is your filly's dad? That is too funny about her being afraid of the snores!!!!!

I have to admit babys are fun. Watching them grow and develop into horses is an experience I can't put into words. I am just so proud of my little guy. Knowing that there are no questions about your babys history is really neat. The fun part is that you are itching to see them grow up and and get ridden but in the meantime all there is left to do is to create an amazing bond between the two of you. The amount of trust that Edwyn has in me is amazing. I better stop- i feel tears coming to my eyes.... /infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Willow - I haven't really done anything with Leeloo (from the movie the Fifth Element, she was the catalyst that saved the universe) other than groom, she stands on cross ties great and loves to be pampered over. Her daddy is our stallion Jacob (aka Rule the Day - his dad was Eyes to Rule) Leeloo's reg. name is Beyond the Rules ('cause she certainly has been!) her mom was Beyond Reason (an DWB/TB conformation hunter).
Was in the hospital as my partner, Bradley Clack, (BC) was riding Jacob in the excercise ring the night before the Cup and decided that he needed to go back on the Lunge for a bit, just a bit to distracted, then while circling ...like a typical 3 yr old, something caught his eye at the other end of the ring and he wanted to go that way when Brad wouldn't let him he reared up, Brad jumped off and landed on his feet holding the reins and collasped - he shattered his heel bone from one side of the ankle to the other - Jacob just stood and sniffed him like a little angel. five hours later we made it back in time for me to get Jake ready for the cup with Brad in a wheelchair spaced out on percadan's!

We're thinking of taking Galli to the Royal this year, depending on what she looks like then of course /infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif
I all know what you mean about breeding, we're getting a free breeding fee to Galli's daddy and my sister is very reluctent to breed her mare again. So now we're curious about finding another broodmare (yay! another horse!).
MissD> unfortunatly I don't know if we'll be going to the KCAT show this 25th, we're moving on the 30th so time might be tight. We'll see though, it's still in the schedule anyways /infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif
Update on Galli: she is smart and fiesty a bad combo! lol! But she's doing great and she now leads away from mom (behind and infront) even if she can't see mom and mom is very good with this all too. She also now picks up all 4 legs, we're proud /infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Tin - I don't have a scanner but Jacob was in the horsesport stallion issue last year - a full page head shot. He was Grand Champion colt/stallion at the Royal as a two year old, and the judge still asks about him - calls him the little bay with all the chrome - whenever we see her in Florida, or judging at Palgrave, we think he's pretty special.
When Leeloo was 1 day old she would walk out of the stall and walk up and down the aisle of the barn, never looked for mom! her brother would never leave mom's side though - so different.
Leeloo's independance came in handy when she was orphaned and she did become much easier to handle when we got her a nurse mom - I think she was afraid if she was bad she would loose her new mom too

Diane, sorry to hear about your mare. Everyone's babies sound like sweeties! I want one NOW! Just joking, I couldn't afford one. What's with all this talk of money lately? Some people have it, some people don't. Yes, money certainly helps in the horse show world, but everyone I know is in it for the love of the horse.

MAZ, no I haven't sent them yet, but will monday. I don't have her address here.
Diane, according to her breeder she is "ginormous", but looks little because the colt is even bigger. I am going up tomorrow or sunday and will do an approximate measure next to my personal height of 16 hh. I can't judge because my last baby was a welsh/CSH cross and we had no idea with her where she would end up. All others have been two and older.
Don't know how she looks to clean, she is out as long as there is daylight so perhaps it is that windswept look. Could be a good day.
She has the loveliest head under all that fuzz. I find her winter coat gives her a plain Jane look, but she is really very fancy. I'll have to try to get some good movement shots of her. She would blow your socks off. Yehaa!

AFR is a very cheerful horse, and he lives in hope that everywhere he goes just might be a breeding situation. So when we unload at a show, he is all pumped up, arched neck, prancing and snorting, then looks around, sees that its Bolton, or some other horse show, his shoulders drop down about 6 inches, he sighs deeply and grabs a mouthful of hay. But he enjoys the horse shows too (just not quite as much!) <G>
Diane, I have 2 weanling coming yearling fillies, one is HUGE (her full sister, who will be 2 in May is 16.1 now). She is 7/8 TB. The other filly (out of a stout and beautiful Hannoverian mare) is very powerfully built also, but not as tall, a good average size though. but both covered in hair, looking like they are wearing cheap fur coats!

Have sufficiently recovered from the festivities last night with the gals of the New York clique.
Happy to report that I am coming home with at least two horses, a pony; a dog; and speedracer has graciously offered a braying donkey to ornament our yard. /infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif /infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif
Met AHC's lovely pinto Mackie, to whose diet was introduced her innaugural turnip. Also met Trooper's new pony Joe, who will enter the show ring with the name, "It's Not Easy Being Green". /infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif He's very lovely and I think Trooper's in for a blast - if not, of course, we'll just load him onto the truck/trailer we will be purchasing this afternoon to transport our new menagerie back to Canada. /infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif
A lovely time was had later at Dolcino's in Cold Spring, where MAZ and I were fortunate enough to meet many new friends with whom to share a butt.
We are off to Jersey tomorrow where a reunion shall take place between MAZ's Archie and his 'birth parents'. Because I know you're all dying to know, we shall be staying at Bubba's Trailer Park and Mobile Home Resort. And I believe MAZ is trying to secure us a most precious dinner reservation at Tammy Sue's Roadkill Diner. I can hardly wait.
In all seriousness, though, must say, the power of this BB to create and nurture friendships is awesome. It was such a lovely evening among, what felt like, old and dear friends. We're gonna have to plan something in Toronto next methinks.

I wish I'd had a picture of the time that Mandarin was standing in the middle of the ring with an AA on him, consorting with a bunch (at least 5) of other AA ladies after schooling, and all the other ladies were sitting on mares.
Imagine stallion resting one leg, reins drooping, nose-to-nose with several mares---just hanging out with the girls!!!!!!
The ladies were having a jovial chat (hands flying, and not even holding on to the reins), until I screamed, "UM, SOPHIE!!! REMEMBER WHAT YOU'RE ON!!!!!!!!!!", everyone scattered, because they suddenly realized that this serene creature could possibly ruin their show season.
Actually, when we bought him, we had a sperm-count done. We were told that because of his temperament, it was possible that he was infertile. He actually was a bit too fertile, but that is another story... /infopop/emoticons/icon_eek.gif /infopop/emoticons/icon_eek.gif /infopop/emoticons/icon_eek.gif /infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

what a beauty Silly Mommy, do I remember correctly in that he has some foals due or on the ground?
Sorry I've been kind of absenty lately, I've been very busy and friday night our poor mare suffered from gas colic. So vet was called and she was walked every hour for 15 mins until 6 am *sobb*. She's completly fine now but we were worried about her /infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif
And of course last night I HAD to go out and celebrate St. Paddy's day! /infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif *hands everyone a green beer*
children running around my estate, and at least one more on the way... Last spring, I finally got the "keeper" a colt, who should mature to at least 17.2, and georgeous (although looks a bit gawkey right now--I'm hiding him out back), who won't be gelded unless he goes through a major mentality change--he thinks he's a dog, and follows me everywhere... He'd follow me upstairs and sleep with me in my bed if I asked him. /infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif /infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif /infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

I measured Hannah, sort of, while standing in the run off and mud, trying to make sure we were on even ground, with no stick.
She comes up to the middle of my breast bone and I'm 5'4". Approximately makes her about 53" tall which is 13.1h at 9 months.
The barn managaer is going to measure her properly for me as soon as she stops laughing at me. I'll let you know how big she really is in a day or two!
Oh, and my shy baby is coming out of her shell a bit. She came over for some fine lovin' and had a good rub. She is very sweet and no wuss. Thank goodness!
Aren't babies fun???
Tin- sorry bout the mare colicking, but that often happens when they are about to come into their foal heat.

Mar. 18, 2001, 07:27 PM
k so here's a question for you guys, how tall were your babes when they were born? and do you guys know how to do the string test to determine thier future heights?
Silly Mommy> darn foal heats! /infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif /infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif
that the string test isn't accurate til they're a year old.
All, I know (never measured one) is that Drew was at my shoulder's height (I'm 5'6") when he was 3mos. The first picture that I posted of him was when he first (finally) stood, and I think the height of the walls before the bars is at least 3'6". He had a problem getting those legs going the right way!!!

I love the babies. The learning curve is amazing. Hannah's sister Lily drives me nuts(we call her "her royal Liliness"), although I love her. She is in your face the entire time you are there. The more you shoosh her away the worse it gets. My little trick is to hold her and after a while she will back off. Still, it takes me about ten minutes to get near Hannah and Neile, the yearlings.
Here is Hannah at five weeks.
this horse wouldn't make 16HH---He's now 16.2 (solid) and has been competing quite sucessfully with a certain AA member of this board.

I hope that Canter has us beat! Heidi- if you are still in babyangst - there is a beautiful 17h reg CSH mare for sale, in foal to A Fine Romance, to foal this spring. She had another foal by AFR that is stunning. She's a lovely horse, great mover, gets in foal easily, good mother, very reasonably priced - the lady who has her is quite elderly and getting frail - her husband just died last week, and she has come to the realization that the horses, especially a foal, are just a little too much for her. a good home is the biggest priority.

Tsk tsk! had slipped to page 2! can't have that .... we need to keep this going until at least the fiest show .... just found out that there's only 1 indoor show this spring - the cornerstone show has been cancelled.
Our mare is still waiting to have her baby! ... I think she's wants to wait until her turnout buddy has hers.... but that's not until the end of May!!! I know a mare can go 1 month overdue but can they go 2 1/2? i hope not! mare watch is killing us .... it's gotten to the point when we hear a strange noise over the monitor that we discuss what is could be for a half hour or so and if it keeps up .... we'll wonder down and check .... but she's always there looking at us, as innocent as can be, asking for treats!
we've decided that the mare (chestnut) is having a chestnut filly ... as nothing else could be as contrary! /infopop/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif

Diane - that will give you more fodder for chestnut mare topics.
Cornerstone cancelled? Only 1 indoor left? Yikes.
