The orange thong is flapping in the breeze like a windsock.

Heidi thanks for the lead via email. I'll email.

Rack up those posts people.

Sorry, I seem to have stumbled onto this thread thinking there was a raucous party and nationalistic mission (driven by pride and zeal) going on.

Seems I'm mistaken and the troops have scrambled far and wide to concede defeat to those feng shui'ed, new aged, crystal-wearing, and koi-fish eating Californians. /infopop/emoticons/icon_frown.gif

I don't have anything useful to add, except to do my Nationalistic part, I've just consumed almost all, well, o.k., all of a Snack Pack of Timbits (no sour cream).

Aren't you impressed with this great sacrifice I've made in the name of pride and honour?

Keepin' it kickin', eh.

Now that I think about it, I do believe the Prez thread was longer than even the CA clique's valiant attempt at internet domination. Are we going to let that horrendous mess rule the BB? I think not! Keep it alive, people! /infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

I think we crashed the BB...I'm getting the "server is unavailable" message again. Sorry, Erin! /infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif (hehehe)

Congratulations to Kryswyn, riddle champ of the world! Or (more possibly) just a really talented procrastinator...does your boss know this is what you do all day? /infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

NOT only does she know it, my boss lurks here! But I can only play before, or after work or on my days off. Which today turned out to be because Shout's having puppies. RIGHT NOW. GOTTA GO!

Okay, upon searching for the thread, it popped right up. And it has recent replies too... but isn't showing up on the main page.

So, I'm hoping adding a new post will resurrect it from the dead???

Aren't you heartened knowing that rather than taking the thread off life support system, we continue to rally around, holding a silent vigil for our beloved thread in BB obscurity?

Do you think we hurt the thread's feelings by not posting a singular response in, like, two hours? Is the thread holding a grudge and punishing us with the silent treatment? Do you think we might have to resort to an exorcism?

BTW, do you think the thread can come after us in our dreams? How can I go to bed tonight knowing there is a disgruntled thread wandering around, haunting us from some higher plane? /infopop/emoticons/icon_eek.gif

Hehehehe. Now that we're languishing in obscurity, safe from the prying eyes of those vile Californians, doesn't it seem like the perfect opportunity to spread some rumours about those thread-stealin, omm-chantin', therapist-possessin' CA cliquers?

Lemme start.

And elizabeth...boy, detailing that woman's past would take at least another five pages. Studying for the CA bar? Do believe she neglected to mention that she was doing so behind the bars of the Palo Loma Woman's Correctional Insitute. /infopop/emoticons/icon_razz.gif

ya! Looks like I get the "page starting tiara" back from BossHoss *does touchdown dance*

I'm an insominiac (is that a word?) too, except since I don't have school tomorrow I don't suffer from it. I started taking these herbal (non addictive, all natural) pills to try and help me sleep. Well so far, they haven't worked but they smell HORRIBLE and you have to take 4 big capsuls a night so it makes you feel like your trying something. Tried sleepy-time tea too, yoga and meditation.

I find I sleep the best if I do some really strenious exercises (ie push ups, crunches, thigh pushes...), then yoga and then meditate. The pills will give me a really DEEP sleep if I ever get to sleep.

Feb. 26, 2001, 07:38 PM
the differences in beer and wine as to making you sleepy, and it isn't here---who snatched my post?????? This is creepy!!!!!!

Sorry I missed all the disappearing thread excitement of the night... I was otherwise occupied- but that's a subject we won't go into here! /infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

As for the CA rumours, let's have it known that Merry's sister Beezer is none other than Brittany Spears. I believe that her excuse for no longer showing is that the sun would melt all that plastic they put into her! /infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Well, funny you should ask Bumpkin.

We're thinking of venturing to Spruce in July for the North American (Jul 4-8); we shall have children, however, in tow, so would recommend that you listen out for the loudest screeching voices at the venue.

Proviso, BTW, the only Calgarians that I know of on the board are Kachoo, BossHoss and someone else who's name eludes me right now (sorry). Jair and Alice are but a 12 hour drive away.

I have noticed, BTW, the speed with which you posted once our MIA thread was retrieved and placed in its rightful place atop the page...almost as if you were leading us off a strong scent of suspicion. /infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif /infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Well, mare is down and sleeping. Not very exciting

I am also 12 hours away by car.
Faster if I don't take the Trans Canadian Hiway through Van.
But perhaps we could pickup Jair on the way! I have a suburban so there is plenty of room.
We plan on stopping at a friends B&B in Merrit, gourmet food and beautiful Selle Francais horses. /infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif
I think most people are going to the Masters in September, but my daughter, babysitter material, wants to come with us, and school starts then /infopop/emoticons/icon_redface.gif

Feb. 26, 2001, 10:41 PM
Must say I'm pleased that you Canadians (and, I note, a few dissidents from the U.S.) have found something to occupy your time in the frozen north. Wouldn't want you to spend your time doing anything worthwhile like, oh, creating a worthwhile television show. Last time I was in Spruce Meadows, the "Farm Report" was prime time!

But I digress.... /infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Can I demurely point out that you may indeed match our thread's length, but will it ever have the merit of ours? When that Oscar envelope is opened, it will contain the name, "Question for Merry", based on content, substance, and artistic merit.

And by the way, I am far more svelte than Anna Nicole-Smith, although I do understand that she did once dance on tabletops... /infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Kryswyn
Feb. 27, 2001, 05:04 AM
Not meant as a critique mind you, but if you want to top the Merry thread, you need to find an on-going (preferrably unanswerable question ie. where is Kim McDonald and is she still riding) Since you all are spread out over a country not a state (which the CA-clickers tend to overlook) its doubtful that you could rabbit on the way they do, but perhaps you could find something on which everyone can contribute?

The style however is very good indeed. The riddles were fun. How about an ongoing series of CALIFORNIAN jokes, you know: How many Californians does it take to.....

Enjoying this thread very much and endeavoring to help turn it into a coat. PS I'm giving you back the star that PamM took from your rating. Isn't that just like a lawyer?

<Kryswyn hold up turquoise thong to self and laughs hysterically. Orange toque she thinks will not work either as it keeps ejecting itself from her admittedly large round head>

After a sleepless night watching the mare cam, as I was catching up on my z's I get a call from my sister. Mare seems to have bloody discharge, vet has been called and he said a) she's starting to foal b) babies moving into the birth canal and is breaking membranes c) something's wrong. So I'm on my way out. Fingers crossed everyone!!

Feb. 27, 2001, 07:00 AM
Finger's crossed... Nothing more scary/exhilirating than foaling a mare!!!

I was going to post something to give this thread smoe "substance", but I'm at a loss after tin's post.

Good luck!!!!!

I don't think it would be good for her to miss that. /infopop/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif

Feb. 27, 2001, 07:39 AM
Yup, we'd prefer to go out in September too for the Masters; can't, the kids start school that week. /infopop/emoticons/icon_frown.gif Thus, it's July for us. How old's your daughter Bumpkin? Mine will be 11 in June.

Unifying query, per Kryswyn: Where is Sarah Watt (from B.C.), showed in the east though; trained with Ian Millar; had the horse Arabian. Mother was a Canadian Tire 'heiress';

Unanswerable query to sustain the thread for another 20 pages: What's Sara's shoe size?

Tin, my fingers are crossed. Hope everything goes well with the foaling. Sending virtual positive thoughts your way.

Tin
Feb. 27, 2001, 08:54 AM
Thanks for all your thoughts guys but it was a false alarm *sigh*. Vet got there, did a rectal to see if baby was alive and where he was positioned. He was kicking and moving around *good*, so then vet did a vaginal check and found uterus/cervix to be tight. Which means all bets off for tonight.

He can't really give us an answer about why she had a bloody discharge but he said all looked well and everything was fine *phew*

Sucks that I don't have a baby to tell y'all about yet but glad that mare/foal are still o.k.

Oh, oh, and we found a shetland X pony mare for sale, due to foal in the spring with a pinto baby. I think our farm needs a cute pony and foal, don't you? /infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif We'll see if we can convince dad /infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Email and let me know. I am not even a half hour and seem to only make it down when nothing's going on. I've caught the Masters only twice, one saw some riding, the other time only had time for shopping, and twice been there for all of a 1/2 hour then had to drive madly across the city to catch a flight.
On the other hand, Kachoo and Coppelia live not a 1/2 hour away and I've never met either.
I was supposed to be involved in the Battle of the Breeds this year at the Masters, but pony was sold, and now I'm not sure if I want to put up my effort.

Glad everything's okay Tin ..... we have a mare due in the next two weeks and she's panicked us a couple of times already, had the vet out ... shot of banamine and everyhting okay .... vet figured baby was resting on something ..... it's a very scary time once you've read a few books and see everything wrong that can happen ..... and to top it off our mare's last foal was born a dumb foal and died after a week (with the previous owners) ...

Tin
Feb. 27, 2001, 09:12 AM
BossHoss> it was very scarey there for a bit, but were relieved when vet gave the thumbs up, big weight off our shoulders. It's only been recently people have been telling us "foalings gone bad" stories so our imaginations were running wild.

Thank you, thank you, thank you!!! I humbly (me humble? *phef*) accept the wonderful honoUr and think a temple may be more appropriate than a shrine, after all you can't perform sacrific's in a shrine. I think a troll every months sounds good for sacrific's don't you? We can feed them to the BB Gods in hope that we never loose threads again and thank them for not crashing every 2 weeks /infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

I am hoping to go to SM this September for the Masters as well. Didn't bother going last year since most of the best horse/rider combinations were in Sydney.

Millerville is great. I've shown there on occasion *G*. I'm trying to think what shouw it would be? I don't think they have rateds (used to be Alberta Light Horse show?) there any more, unless you're talking about eventing. There might be the local Millerville Show, which is fun, very old fashioned, english in the morning and western in the afternoon. It's so low key that if I can scare up a horse I'll show it.
The Pony Show used to be held in the racetrack grounds across the road, but since it's going back to a two day format, and the Saturday market is interferring, it will be moved. That was a lot of fun, I wish they kept it there and accomodated the market, that would be more fun. Also, it runs usually about August, when it's the same day as a Millerville Event, all the event riders come over to the pony show for fun.

Just to nudge this great thread and throw in my $0.02 worth.
Did any of the Canucks on here ever school/show with Lorne Seigel (sp??) in Oakville??

diane
Feb. 27, 2001, 10:29 AM
I lived in the Oakville/ Mississauga area up until 3 years ago ... and Lorne was a 'legend' I always heard about ... I rode for a short time at Catchapenny Stables, across the road from Lorne's and know many who rode/showed with him ... heard MANY stories of his drinking, smoking, and cantankerous ways .... and apparantly he hasn't changed abit!

Feb. 27, 2001, 10:35 AM
Just go done fixing the indoor ring door--the BIG one!!!

I know of the stupid horse tricks thread, but what's the most stupid thing you've witnessed a horse do???

GW
Feb. 27, 2001, 12:14 PM
I sent one of my horses to Lorne's barn for retraining. One of the women there did the riding and he helped her. Amazing results with a horse that could have rivalled any rodeo bronc. /infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Tin
Feb. 27, 2001, 12:51 PM
Stupidest thing I ever saw a horse do was today, the horse was turned out in the court yard for some fresh air (horse has hurt stifle). For some reason horse got excited and tried to jump over a BIG manure pile (oh about 5' high and at least 7' wide) and of course didn't make it, so she was caught up in the pile until she took a second leap which got her.

Second stupidest thing was when a mare licked a metal pole (which was thought to be out of reach) and was stuck there, at least she has the brains to wait (snorting the whole time) and not pull her tongue off /infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Sorry, don't know who Lorne Seigel, can someone fill me in?

Oh and I have a question for the Ontarians and Quebecers (former will do too) which circuit do you think is better, the Ontario or the Quebec. I know alot of people who don't even touch the Ontario A shows anymore and just do strictly Quebec. Why? Any thoughts? I've never been to a Quebec show so i have no clue.

I asked my coach (she judges both Ontario and Quebec) and she thoguht the Quebec shows were more fun and had friendlier people. She also noted that she thought they were alittle cheaper. Any thoughts on that?

GW
Feb. 27, 2001, 01:01 PM
Lorne rode hunters and jumpers in the 60s (I think). I met him through a man who used to coach me. He runs a stable in Oakville on Burnhamthorpe Rd called ??? something about trees, pine, spruce ???? I can't remember. Anyway, it is a fairly small barn, adults only. He is quite the character, but he really knows his stuff.

Tin, I think you've pretty much got it right. I don't personally ride on the A circuit, but my friends do, and I've groomed at a few A shows for them. My friends have told me that the people in Quebec are friendlier, and don't stress out quite so much if you're a little late for your round. The shows are also a little cheaper, and for our barn, a lot closer than Toronto!

Lorne would probably be the 50's and 60's version of Eric or McLain. A horseman's horseman from the other side of the tracks.
If you stop bye to say hello and he does not know you he can be a little abrupt. But if you get past that and ever get to ride there, you learn to really ride and how to bring on a young horse.

Heidi - you've got your Watt info on backwards, girl!
Watt, daughter of Don, owner of big design firm, WattGroup best known for redesign of Loblaws and original PC products labels. Wife Patty, partner in said firm. Now deceased. Daughter Sarah - riding in Europe, riding in the States.

Canadian Tire heiress, now that would be Donna Billes, not Patty Watt. Daughter of Donna - none other than dressage Olympian, Diana Billes (Ureherber or however you spell it) and daughter Karen - oftseen at Palgrave doing the jumpers.
Donna's a Gimcracker. Off and on.

stupid horse story happened yesterday, and I already posted it, but for those who didn't see it...

I'm leaving the house to pick up beast-chilsd from school, and there is someone knocking frantically on my door. When that happens, there's usually a loose horse... She told me I had a "stuck" horse. I'm thinking that some idiot rolled, and got cast under the fence, but NOOOOOOOO!!!!!

I walk out and the idiot had gotten his turnout rug hooked on a maple tree, and had proceeded to pull it off over his head (removing halter as well), and had the leg-straps giving him a wedgie!!!

Guess he's never worn a thong!!!

in a most Canadian way, I think we should ask useless Canadian trivia, and award the winners prizes. Certain awards could be the Golden Thong, the Diamond Toque, and the Platinum 2-4 of Blue. First few questions of Useless Canadian Trivia:
How many races did the Bluenose win?
Who was Canada's first Canadian (as in not British) Prime Minister?
What was the name of the first brand of beer ever marketed in Canada?

Those are just for starters, feel free to contribute some of your own. Oh, and I don't know any of the answers, so be creative. /infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Oh, oh, oh, another brainwave. Too many in one night and I could hurt myself /infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif . But anyways, another prestigious award will be given to the poster with the most original and the best cheer that shows their love for our country. /infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Vineyridge, Big Ben was Dutch, found by Emile Hendrix, bought by Ian Millar for $35,000.

The only frozen 'waste' produced was at his Canadian abode in Perth, Ontario, in the turnout paddock.

Admittedly, I must admit that I find your post rather dismissive and would like to take the opportunity to underline the accomplishments of this country's equestrian athletes - we've won Olympic medals in every discipline, both as a team and individually. Not bad for a country whose population numbers 10% of the U.S. Would also encourage you to check out the results of Ocala and Indio - both well represented by Canadians. Last reminder, Canadians Danny Foster and Dave Ballard are designing the big courses at both Ocala and Indio. Funny how much we can accomplish here in the frozen tundra. /infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

I just got back from a fabulous lesson on my awesome Elliot!!!
No he is not Canadian bred, but his dad won at Spruce Meadows and so maybe we could say Elliot has been to Canada in a round about way /infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif
I have had to let Mallory ride Elliot for the past two months as her horse Poncho has been in his stall after jumping out the dutch door of his stall and scraping a hind leg.
So I have ridden maybe twice since December 29.
Anyways Elliot has been getting worse and worse, had the Vet out to check the teeth, massage therapy, changed bits finally a saddle fitter.
Saddle needs to be a WIDE, so I picked up a brand new County Pro Fit from a dear friend to try tonight for Mallory's lesson, she got sick, so I took the lesson and WOW!!
I am sooooo happy everyone.
Now I know why I love my horse so much.
Both my Dressage and Hunt seat trainers were there and they were amazed. He was so happy, this saddle is so comfy for both Elliot and I.
Elliot jumped big and round, extended his trot, took his leads, and most amazing didn't fuss or go on his head around the ring.
Sorry to be soooo wordy, here, but I just had to write this I am so happy with Elliot and this saddle.
I have to find a used County, 17 W!!

I loved the Hermes, but Mallory and her trainer did not feel the same awe of it I had.
Poncho being aged, did not fit the Hermes without more than enough padding to bring the cantle up.
So to purchase the Beval that did fit Poncho, I had to part with the Hermes to a Juniour who shows different horses on the A circuit with it and is the envy of all her buddies.
Elliot did not exist to me at that time, or he would most likely be happily trotting around with it on his back.
I did ask the buyer if she wanted to sell, and she refused. /infopop/emoticons/icon_frown.gif
Dublin's sister's Hermes is atleast back on the circuit and I do get first refusal if the girl decides to part with it.
Also, /infopop/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif , those County's are nicely padded!! /infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Bumpkin
Feb. 27, 2001, 11:54 PM
You are so correct!!
More than once I had to walk away from a lesson, as I was certain Elliot was giving me the evil eye, every time he came past me.
I refuse to be a mother who tells her child how to ride, and especially in a lesson. /infopop/emoticons/icon_eek.gif
Our trainer reassured me in private that what I was looking at in horror, was very ineffectual and Elliot was just fine and chose to ignore his rider and trotted over the fences safely and did the lesson his way.

The Complete Rider segment said that Big Ben was one of only two non-humans in the Canadian Sports Hall of Fame (Northern Dancer is the other). So--1. I assumed he was Canadian, and 2. That if he is the only jumping horse in your national hall of fame, he was the best Canada had campaigned. As to the frozen waste comment, I have to tell you that I consider everything over the 34th parallel a frozen waste and nearly uninhabitable. I know. I've live in Pennsylvania and New York, and they are much too far north for me.

Snow and ice obscure the damage that a lab puppy creates in the backyard. It is clear, reasonably warm, and I can see from my throne:

-gloves
-mountains of poo
-chewed up and torn lawn chair pads
-logs from the side of the house which he's improvised into a chew toy
-uprooted plants
-destroyed bird feeders
-upturned lawn chairs
-socks
-plastic sheeting
-Fisher Price toys
-a wading pool

And look, here comes the puppy with a bamboo pole from a deccimated lantern. /infopop/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif

I think it would have been safer to have a miniature pony in the backyard.

Heidi- now I know where I can leave my puppy whilst in Toronto with non-dog-loving relatives. Waht is the one thing MIL is afraid of? A little scary black dog knocking her over while she is in that tiny closet of an abomination of a kitchen. what is first thing baby rottweiler puppy did while visiting? Bam..ya got it!
Not to mention- at aprox 3.30 am while we tried to sleep- leaving a large slimy disgusting reeking 'pressie' in our downstairs apartment, obvioulsy she could not help it,even not withstanding the fact that a) hers is usually small firm and notsmelly, and b) she is 100% housebroken.
However, I digress into what we Canadians are most known for discussing on horse BBs.. my point.. ah yes, the backyard! You won't know a difference.

Don't know if I'm the only Manitoban in this unruly bunch (quick, all you Americans, where is Manitoba anyway) but I too am just bursting with pride at how well all our fellow canucks are doing at Ocala and Palm Beach - KK even mentioned Brian Walker and C. He's a hunter that Dorsch's developed here on the frozen prairie, and is pulling in some awfully nice ribbons down there. Heidi, Your yard sounds a lot like mine!! My puppy thinks the recycling box is an endless supply of toys. Those plastic pop bottles are his favourite, so the yard looks like a 7-11 exploded. The moon ray lights have been reduced to green stakes sticking up through the ice at odd intervals, their tops having been stolen by the aforementioned pup. My older dogs think he is crazy, he plays with pop bottles and leaves his bone for them to fight over. At least when he is stealing things it means he isn't eating poop. /infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

It's RRSP season and it's nuts here.

Tin - anything on the baby, yet. I had a girl doing nights with my mare and she left to go to the bathroom, she was gone 10 minutes, and viola, Daphne was born. Baby was standing by the time she got back. Everyone was so excited, they forgot to phone me until 9am when one of the kids said "hey, where's Laurel"! A mad scramble ensued.

Heidi - where'd you get on the stallion issue. A friend of mine is looking for her two(maybe three) mares right now and is going nuts trying to decide. So many stallions, so little time. I might end up with a nice three year old(long story, will tell when it has been worked out, one way or another) in the next while and am thinking along the "I need a new baby, but not of my loins" lines.

My slogan would be "If you have high morals, you'll vote for Laurel". LOL. That should spark some "conversation" eh, Canter.

What's this about Donna Billes lurking on emg. I hope I haven't said anything naughty. She is such a nice lady.

glad that was just a false alarm with your mare. but I bet I can beat EVERYBODY with the longest gestation: 12 months and 10 days .. bred the mare April 10, His Majesty was born April 20. talk about being tired (me and the mare)
Now one of my my mares, Cricket - who is less than a month from foaling (she is bred to a Holsteiner) is acting in HEAT!!!! ( her own gestation was 2 days short of a year!!) they do this to test your love and devotion. I bought a barn video camera finally.
and TIN :KEEP YOUR HANDS OFF THAT PONY!! I saw her. I want her . I need her!!

Now that everyone has finished with the riddles, I think its time for some funny jokes. I think everyone has probably heard this one, but its definately the funniest joke i've ever come across. Not to mention its horsey! /infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

A blonde decides to try horseback riding, even though she has had no lessons or prior experience. She mounts the horse unassisted and the horse immediately springs into motion. It gallops along at a steady and rhythmic pace, but the blond begins to slip from the saddle. In terror, she grabs the horses mane, but cannot seem to get a firm grip. She tries to throw herself over the horses neck, but she slides down the side of the horse anyway. The horse gallops along, seemingly impervious to its rider. Finally, giving up her frail grip, she leaps away from the horse to try and throw herself to safety. Unfortunately, her foot has become entangled in the stirrup, she is now at the mercy of the horses pounding hooves as her head is struck against the ground over and over. As her head is battered against the ground, and she is mere moments away from unconsciousness, to her great fortune..The WalMart manager sees her and shuts the horse off.

would you like to adopt the future bride???

Being that she is close to being evicted from pre-school, and has had all TV and computer accessability removed, she just came to me and said "Mommy--we don't have garbage cans big enough for the TV's, and you have to work on your computer!"

Sh!+--she just said "MOMMY--I LOVE YOU!!!!!"

In a word, Jamie Lynn, NO! We really should get the kids together - they'd probably cancel each other out.

My 'brilliant' three-year-old Sumo and I were arguing yesterday, he tried to bite his brother, and in utter rage, he walked up to me, glared at me and declared, "and you can't even drive!" Has also memorized my parents' telephone number and calls them at will and whim and orders them to "pick me up right now, I don't like mommy anymore". /infopop/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif

Ironically, though, everyone outside the family thinks he's an angel - well-behaved, considerate, amusing, charming, and not the least bit satanic.
How I hate the terrorizing threes - aka When Satan Comes for a Three Year Visit. Once they're approx. six, though, they do start to resemble reasonable human beings. Sorta like with horses.

Jumpthemoon - are you mocking me with that joke? I may not be blonde but boy have I had those blonde moments riding.

Fred> hey, I'll arm wrestle you for her!!! That pony is mine!!! oh, alright you can have her, my dad said no anyways /infopop/emoticons/icon_frown.gif bummer /infopop/emoticons/icon_frown.gif

Well mare is bleeding again today, this time it's all dried in her tail too. So we phoned the vet and he said it's most likely a urinary tract infection because all is well with baby and uterus. So we cleaned her up, wrapped her tail and will watch her on the monitor to watch her health. Anyone else have experience with this? will post this as a main post as well, any info would be greatly appreciated.

oh and *laugh* coming out of the barn's driveway my sister (in her truck) was infront of me. The driveway was shear ice so I didn't give my car gas at all, just rode the brake until about 50 feet away from my sis. Thinking "gosh it's slippery I'll leave lots of room between us" I started putting on the brakes....to my suprise I'm not slowing down. So I started pupming the brakes and NOTHING is happening except I'm now on a 45 degree angle inching at a whole 2 km/h towrds my sist who was waiting to pull out. Well at that point I had a choice to:
a) aim for a snow bank, mom may kill me for damaging the car but sis won't kill me for hitting her truck
b)bail out of the car into a snow bank and run for my life back to the barn an hide in a stall
c) grit my teeth and hit my sis going a whopping 2 km's/h
So... of course I choose c) and my car actually dove under my sis's truck. My sis drove forward off my car and then we got out and we could NOT stop laughing!! I checked out her truck, tiny tiny dent in the chrome and then my car..... broken left headlight, broken left blinky light and broken plastic grill part *eeepp*. Still histarically laughing we drove home and I told my mom and she was not impressed. My dad laughed his head off, me and my sis were almost to tears still laughing and then my mom loosed up, pushed me in a snow bank and laughed to *phew*. So that's my story, at least it was my sis infront of me and not someone else, or atleast I didn't just slid into the highway off the driveway /infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Katie, I know you're always on here, you're just like me: addicted to the net!

Funny story here (well, not so funny for me, but will be for everyone else)... I'm Catholic, and now that Lent is here, I have to give something up. My parents suggest the internet. I screamed in terror and refused. As a compromise, I went with chocolate. The problem being this: I am extremely addicted to chocolate. You guys should all feel special that I chose to keep you ahead of my favourite food. I actually got sick from withdrawl today. /infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Oh, and Katie, I just got back from riding my pony. Late lesson, remember? He was so good! /infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif We finished up wih a big oxer, and Felix wanted me to do a wide spread, so he just moved the standards out without measuring it. When I was done, he decides to bring out the measuring tape: 5' wide! And we took off from a really long spot... I am so tired I can't think of anything else I've read lately by name. Hello, me are you there? Oh, yes, Discover magazine and National and Cdn Geographics, cover to cover. And a 'couple' of horsey publications.

Northrop Fry. We got down on the floor to pray when he walked by. We were so weird.

Rohinton Mistry's most renowned book is "A Suitable Son". Widely available, nominated for the Booker, I believe. Have you read Ann Marie McDonald's "Fall on Your Knees" - very wonderful.

Horsey topic, horsey topic...Hey, anyone else notice how well the Canadian contingent are doing in Ocala and Indio? Now, if we can only figure out how to hang onto those awesome horses rather than selling em off to the highest (usually American) bidder. /infopop/emoticons/icon_frown.gif

Fall on Your Knees, that's it. Wonderful, wonderful book. Also liked Summer Gone (once I finally finished it). I also like Anil's Ghost by Michael Ondadje(whatever!).

I did a "Tolkien" marathon a couple of years ago. One of my daughters favourites is "Letters from Father Christmas".

For good cottage reads I love Ruth Rendell(barbara Vine). Tree of Hands, Asta's Book and her short stories are great and fast(and many I can't think of off the bat).

I have never read Stephen King.

Get your minds out of the gutter, geeze just cause you guys are perves doens't mean I am. Yes I'm talking to you heidi /infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

I talking about books WITHOUT pictures with chapters more than 2 pages long with large text /infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

I've read The Hobbit God knows how many times, but couldn't even name any other books by Toilken (sp?). And I have no clue what brought on the Stephen King phase but for about 2 years I read a new King book pretty much every 2 weeks.

I'm also one of those people who can't put down a book once started no matter what time it is, how tired I am or even how crappy the book is.

To make this horse related, I'm reading a book about Women and Horse's by Gawana Pony Boy (is that his name? It's something like that). I was given it for chstmas by a student I teach.

Prepared for what, you ask? Not sure, but I have a 'need' that needs fulfiling. I'm collecting mares.

How's about: The horse from hell - greatest horse purchase mistake.

I'll start. Our first horse was a 'trakehner cross', suitable for hunters.

Well, in fact, she was a Clyde cross. Pulled like a freight train, 15.3 but built like a brick poo-house; the feathers on her legs should have been an indication of her breed. We were eager neophytes and I swear the man who sold us that horse saw us coming a mile away.

And oh yes, I was on the verge of buying a 2 year old cause, "look Hans, I want a black horse and she's so pretty". Her front leg was crooked. I did not notice. I am no longer allowed to even look at a horse cross-eyed without professional consult. Though, come to think of it, no one said I couldn't purchase semen online...

I wish I had my camera last night to take pics of Mudder. How about this for a debate: Mudder is a super horse, 16 Hh chestnut TB mare, really sweet, would do anything to please (gather round kiddies I will tell some more Tales of Adventure from the great Canadian Rockies), drawbacks are, has been a pet all her life (trails no ringwork), and is 14 yrs old.
Yesterday we went hacking, Mudder and I and Issy dog. Remember I have been on a horse about 10 times since the accident, and the problem is that my legs and all my muscles don't respond they way they should. So needless to say, it is quite a challange and very strange feeling to be riding.
We hacked up through the mountains, which haven't been bushwacked in some time, actually, if you've never had the oppertunity to do this- we were following a deer trail, which goes up the ridge, through the birch stand, over fallen brush, through a clearing, then back into brush and down down down the ridge twisting and turning through a deer-width and deer-height corridor to another very hilly clearing. Then we lost the trail and had to turn around an go back the way we came. We were galloping, cantering, jumping everything (always tiny stuff, I bet no more than 1 foot) we could find- she was awesome. I felt great. I had SOOOO much fun. We had so much fun that we turned back from the barn and went for a little canter beside the lake- which was cool, because as I sat back on her to bring her up, she tucked her head and back and went into a slooooow round rocking horse canter. I also groomed her for about two hours and de-shedded her before we rode- and pulled her mane- which she LOVES! (reason enough to buy her). After the ride I cooled her and groomed for another hour or more.
Technically, I know I should go for the horse who wins my confidence. Technically, I know a 14 yr old- and this one is sound- has a lot of life left. She is super classy, very pretty, and a doll.
So why my nagging doubt???

OnyxThePony

Here is how cool Mudder is. If you are squeemish about dead pets I suggest you not read on.
Mudder's owner's neice's dog was killed by a cougar. They searched for it for days and found the dead body up on the mountain. Neice insisted she have the body back (yeeeeeick!!). Neice's boyfriend, who does not ride, put a halter and leadrope on Mudder, hopped on bareback, and rode quietly up the deer trails, then through the bush, to the body. It was summer, and the body was still decomposing, very wet , torn to shreds, and very very very smelly. He hops off Mudder and throws the dog carcas on her back!! She then carries them both back home without a word of protest. That has to say something about the horse!

Heidi - I must join you in the Martin Amis distain club. Blech. Before you celebrate another member into the COTH literary club however, I must confess: I love Victoria Clayton. Good junk reading. It's a bit like watching "Chef" on PBS. Fun.

LCR Scott - Stephen King's new book "On Writing" is actually supposed to be really good. The only horror part is that it's about him.

Tin - the secret's out. I'm mailing a really big parcel of candy for you to feed to the kiddies - punishment for those loose lips of yours lol!

Jaime Lynn - no scanner!! How low tech. Maybe I should head over to LCR Scott's and we could do a mini scrapbook. I'd love to share pictures but have no way to do so.

Mare Update-

Well I watched her all last night (I'm exhausted) and she was normal miss. mare with nothing out of the ordinary.
This morning my sister checked her before going to work and she still has a little bit of a discharge and her bag is a little bigger but either than that nothing. When putting her outside, miss. mare ran down to the round bale, chased her friends away took one bit and the ran back up to the gate insisting on being brought in. This is odd for her because she hates to be inside. So she's inside now, being watched and I'll check her when I go teach (about 30 mins).

Vet still thinks urinary tract infection, Jamie Lynn has helped us out alot and as I type, my sister is talking to a very knowledgable breed to get her thoughts on the matter and maybe have her come out and take a look.

*laugh* as it turns out we just got an e-mail form a friend of ours saying that their pony who they've been showing up till now, had an unexpected baby on wednesday! She sent us a picture and it's adorable!! The kids are extatic!

Tin, I am so excited about your baby. I want my own. Oh, wait I have Hannah!

Here you go Jaime Lynn, two different albums.

The pony was sold to the states and has done extremely well. I want her back, but can't afford her! The only two left with me are Hannah and Newman the jumper(who is just a big welsh pony in Hanoverian disguise).

Feel free to ooww and ahh!:)

with very expensive highlights (what a cliche).
I too hate Martin Amis - not a big fan of CanLit generally. did you hear that Shipping News is being made into a film? Heidi, do you know who is doing it?
I was never a mystery fan either, till, many years ago, I was wandering around whining, "I don't have a book to read"... my husband handed me a mystery by some guy named Dick Francis, saying, "you'll like this, it has horsies in it"..I sat in the bath tub crying my eyes out - until it was done. It was the one where the horse gets its legs broken...

GW
Mar. 1, 2001, 11:06 AM
Dick Francis is my favourite. I also like Sue Grafton and Patricia Cornwell. Haven't read much lately though, I'm spending too much time reading about the genetic basis of metabolic diseases of dairy cows for my thesis. Did read a book by Reginald Hill over Christmas, good-but kind of different. I wish my fiance liked to read, he is complaining bitterly of boredom. He broke a bone in his foot yesterday and feels that I should somehow entertain him. /infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Canter dearest, you may not suffer with Muchausen, but perhaps there's a cure for your Munchkin Disease. Should that be the case, please advise and perhaps we can get a 2-for-1 deal.

LCR - lovely pictures. You're quite the photographer; perhaps you can venture to New York and take some pictures of Jaime Lynn's vet for us. I can't think of any outstandingly wowser vets/farriers/trainers -- though I guess our trainer does have a nice bum.

Fred, the movie comes out in the fall, directed by Lasse Hallstrom ("My Life as a Dog", "Cider House Rules"), with Kevin Spacey, Cate Blanchett and Julianne Moore. Hallstrom is wonderful with adaptations and the movie should be a stunner.

Amusing anecdote. Hans' alarm did not go off this morning, his airport limo neglected to pick him up, he woke with a start at 7:00am for a 7:45 flight to San Francisco. Proceeded to run around the house in a panic, swearing. Heidi to the rescue, picked up the phone, called the airline, got him on a 9:15am, direct to SF - i.e. he's just arrived at SFO.

Has it ever struck anyone else that exceptionally smart MEN can be exceptionally stupid? He's also been known to wear his clothes backwards and inside out. /infopop/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif

You need to meet my dad. He is so stupid it's not funny and he has an astronomical IQ. I did't get it obviously, but we won't go there.

oh forgot a mare update incase anyone is interested.

Brie's inside today (didn't want to go out) and she's extremly plasid and calm especially since I taugh on the track (inside track that encircles the stalls). She munched at her hay the whole tme, throwing out thses loud grunts and noises but pretty much stayed in the same spot. There is alot of baby movement and she's defintaly not as round as yesterday, she's looking kind of flattish. No discharge at all but a bunch of tummy grumbles.
I gave her a "mommy message" and she loved it when I messages her back and her butt, you should have seen the nose stretched out! lol!

My sister talked to a co-worked (very experienced breeder) and she suggested that we get a swaub of the discharge and find out what exactly it is. She also said that we should consider inducing if she doesn't have it by tonight.

don't induce. As far as I know,it is almost NEVER recommended for mares. The average gestation is 341 days - but the range for "normal" is wide. She sounds like she is progressing normally. The foal will be born when it is ready. (did you see my post about the 12 months and 10 days gestation?) The fact that she is changing shape is a good sign the foal is moving around to get in the birth position, so also is the change in behaviour. Has she been rubbing her tail, or leaning her butt up against the stall wall? The rule about broodmares is that there are no rules - except whatever she wants, whenever she wants - they all make their own.
Heidi - thanks for the info - do you know how to pitch music for a film?

Fred
Mar. 1, 2001, 12:46 PM
I also remember Lorne Siegle (sp?). I was at a schooling show at the old Breakaway about 18 years ago with my then-young OTTB (BOB, now the Farm Manager and still the most annoying horse in the world!). Lorne, who I didn't know, came up to me and said,, "Best horse on the Grounds". I've had a high regard for him ever since! he is known to be a real horseman.
Bob, now 23 and big (17 H) brother of Lucy, Cricket, and Fred was a fabulous horse in his day. and he has found his true calling, "brood mare manager aka the Big Tease"

Canter, yes, indeedies, I cook quite well but only pig parts. Can occassionally do beef, chicken's okay. Unfortunately, my brood is reluctant to take spicy Thai babyback ribs to school - they've inherited Hans' family's boring palate and insist on lard sandwiches. /infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Fred - you asking me to sing?!?? I do, BTW, a great Mel Torme and Ethel Merman impression. Have never pitched music - but have been on the receiving end of music pitches, usually through one of the agencies in town.

BTW, anyone know of decent schooling barns in and around Picton? Friend needs to find a barn for his 9-year-old daughter - even if they had to take a summer lease on a pony.

Query for Fred BTW - has A Fine Romance sired many jumper babies? Sharing LCR's need for a baby. Thinking of buying a WB mare - I think Hans would be delighted to pay for one, given my heroic feats this morning. /infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif /infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Fred> we don't want to induce, and would lvoe to leave her as long as we can but we don't know where/why the bloody discharge so it's something in the back of our minds just in case. She seemed fine today, no discharge so hopefully all is good. Baby is moving and mommy is doing fine.

oh and going back to the least expensive investment or whatever, I was given a horse, Bean, by my coach. I attached a pic of him, he was my love!! Taught me more than words could discribe and was priceless! Eventually I had to sell him to buy Tin (outgrew Bean) and got a fair bit for him considering.

Love you always Bean, where ever you are!

Anyways Tin was on the cross ties being his usual silly self as I was talking to our barn manager and noticed a muzzle on one of the horses doors. I asked if I caould try it on Tin and she laugh and helped me put it on. Well as soon as we did the buckle up he went from silly/obnoxious to mellow and falling asleep with his nose to the ground, in the matter of 2 seconds!! It was sooo funny!!! The girl that owned Farrow? I don't know what she's doing now - I can't even remember who she rode with - how's that for a bad short term memory. Doug I remember. Jennifer, whom I spoke to last summer I do not. Funny thing, memories.

Jenn had Farrow and another horse, whose name eludes me, who was shown by Yann Candele last season. I don't think Farrow's show at all in the past couple of years - though will readily admit, I may be wrong.

You know, it's always scary when we start to resemble our grandmothers. Grandma wonders everyday how many children I have, but can give you minute details of events from fifty years in the past. Not that you Canter, at 61, are anything at all like my 90-year-old grandmother. A Fine Romance's oldest foals are just rising 5 yrs old - the ones starting to jump, are really athletic, free in the shoulder, very brave. I have a fallen tree in one of my fields - the foals race around and jump it on their own - all in stride, huge bascules! One that I sold as a 2 yearold, was bought to be a top level eventer (the girl has Olympic aspirations), but the trainer thinks he is a jumper, close to 17 h,jumps with his knees up to his eyeballs. He is 4 now. I bottle raised that foal when his mum rejected him (barn name "Lips")
You are welcome to come see AFR anytime; he is at Peter Stoeckle's. I would love to lease/buy a retired jumper mare to breed to him. If you know of any.

Shhh! Don't tell Hans but I've already spent his stock options - I think a nice trip to Germany to buy a couple of geldings and a mare is in order. Hell, at this point, I deserve it; admittedly, Hans is pretty good at acknowledging that it truly is about ME and MOI. /infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif /infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif I think Phil Henning and/or Augustin Walch have a couple of nice WB broodmares, BTW. Though as I think about it, wouldn't Alice be lovely to breed? I'm sure Jair won't object. I'm also very intrigued by IVF. For a mare, not me.

Canter, thank you for acknowledging that you are old enough to be my grandmother. /infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif /infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif Does this mean you're available to babysit?

Chinook!! chinook chinook chinook!!!!!! Wahoo! All this week. Snoweater came Wednesday; in the morning on the way to the barn there was less than a foot of snow in my front yard- then by the time I got home from the barn, around 7 pm, there was NO snow in my front yard!!
That day was so warm and so full of itself, that Mudder and I went for a decent long hack through the deer paths. Pretty cool... even the deer had been quiet, not leaving tracks.. but they had been out the day before and reminded us of the trail.

Well here in sunny Manitoba it is just that - sunny - but also warm (by that i mean above freezing, which it has been for the past few days now). Definition of the coming of Spring. It'll always be the first robin, for me. But here, the ground squirrels (=prairie dogs= gophers = 'feepers') showing their noses from underground is always the first indication! k BossHoss, let me get this right. A ground squirrel= prairie dog= gopher= feepers, so does that mean they are the same as the ground hogs here? I always thought prairie dogs were smaller. Same family? And how the do you get "'feeper" out of all that?
Maybe you could lure one into a box with a french frie and then ship it down to me, then I can compare /infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

OnyxThePony
Mar. 2, 2001, 11:10 AM
Tin, the common factor in all these definitions is the French Fry Factor.
An easterner names them Prairie Dog.
A werterner (Albertan) names them 'gopher' irregardless of the existance of a(nother) actual animal named 'the gopher'.
A biologist names them ground squirrel, and
WE call them feepers for the feep kinda sound they make while begging for fries.
The distinction and link, as I mentioned, the way to ID these critturs in the wild, is to offer them a McDonalds french fry and see if they come running. If you have an abundance of critturs and you think a few might be faking it for propriety's sake, then withhold the french fry.. the one who sits on your foot and undoes the buckle of your birkenstock proves itself the true feeper and gets the fry.
Also known to have a taste for Dairy Queen, we had one try to jump in the corvette with us, alas he was too tiny, and we thought it would be 'cruel' to remove him from his 'natural surroundings' not knowing at the time that a feeper's most coveted place is in a human house beside the plate you are eating off of.

Ah! Too much to learn about little fuzzy creatures some who may or may not beg for french fries. Thanks for that info though BossHoss I may have to travel out there, french frie in hand and see if I can spot me a feeper!

What do I do outside of horses? what do you mean outside of horses? I didn't think such thing existed /infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

I started packing up my room today and decided to box my ribbons, what a trip! Every ribbon I ever recieve was delicatly placed in a moving box and it took me a good 2 hours because I had to read the back of each and everyone. Even though just by looking at the front of them (the placing, style and location) I could have told you everything about that show, right down to what colour socks I was wearing /infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Which gives me a question to ask you guys, what do you write on the back of your ribbons?

I write my horse's name, my name, which class/division, date and our placing out of how many people (ex. to see 1/32 on the back would mean first out of 32).

In honour of the weekend:

The 5 Stages of Drunkenness

Stage 1 - SMART This is when you suddenly become an expert on every subject in the known universe. You know you know everything and you want to pass on your knowledge to anyone who will listen. At this stage you are
always RIGHT. And of course, the person you are talking to is very WRONG. This makes for an interesting argument when both parties are SMART.

Stage 2 - GOOD LOOKING
This is when you realize that you are the BEST LOOKING person in the entire bar and that people fancy you. You can go up to a perfect stranger knowing they fancy you and really want to talk to you. Bear in mind that you are still SMART, so you can talk to this person about any subject under the sun.

Stage 3 - RICH
This is when you suddenly become the richest person in the world. You can buy drinks for the entire bar because you have an armored truck full of money parked behind the bar. You can also make bets at this stage, because of course you're still SMART, so naturally, you will win all your bets. It doesn't matter how much you bet 'cos you are RICH. You will also buy drinks for everyone that you fancy, because you are now the BEST LOOKING person in the world.

Stage 4 - BULLET PROOF
You are now ready to pick fights with anyone and everyone, especially those with whom you have been betting or arguing. This is because nothing can hurt you. At this point you can also go up to the partners of the people who you fancy and challenge them to a battle of the wits or money. You have no fear of losing this battle, because you are smart, you're RICH and Hell, you're better looking than them anyway!

Stage 5 - INVISIBLE
This is the final stage of Drunkenness. at this point you can do anything, because NO ONE CAN SEE YOU, You dance on a table to impress the people who you fancy because the rest of the people in the room cannot see you. You are also invisible to the person who wants to fight you. You can walk through the streets singing at the top of your lungs because no one can see or hear you and because you're still SMART you know ALL the words.

Heidi/Canter psudo X-Files moment. I have been engaged in battle with the City of Toronto who insist that I own not only my house but the house across the street. Then to add insult to injury, they sent a collection agency after me because I haven't paid the Water Bill on my neighbours address.

Burocrats are the worse. And then there's Rogers@home. Worse. Much worse. When you're ready Heidi I have a cocktail waiting.

Eglinton, which Bertin did you ride? /infopop/emoticons/icon_eek.gif

Tin, you may wish to send your post to our clique sisters in New York. Do believe they hold the landspeed record for zipping through stage 1 to 5 in under a half hour. /infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Canter, why don't you hammer a 'for sale' sign on your neighbours lawn. I'm sure the proceeds would buy a few nice horses.

Canter - will you please please please tell me who you are before Collingwood so i can at least say hi? If I know who you are, that is. /infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif *puppy dog face*

My favorite book i've ever read is probably Angela's Ashes. Amazing amazing amazing!! I read through it so quickly, I just couldn't put it down. It takes a while to get started but once you've begun, its awesome!! I just finished Flowers for Algernon by Daniel Keyes and it was also an exceptional book. Find me a good book and i'll read forever. If not, you're stuck with me here. /infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif
