Dublin: that's a dear photo! Oh, that horse shows could be so pleasant and "fun" again, the mood that photo conveys.
suave: Okay, we may have just missed crossing paths, time-wise, at the fairgrounds. As soon as I saw the Daily Pilot photo, I knew, without looking at the caption, that was DeeDee Beauchamp. Again, didn't know her personally, but I "knew" her as one of the gals riding hunters at the fairgrounds. As for CHRIS CORNELL... LOL!Yes, she was Katrina's "rider" whom I er, replaced, let's say. The whole hoopla came to a head when, as I recall, she lied about her age at the A-rated fairgrounds show so she could still ride Juniors and Jackie Kruckenburg nailed her on it! /infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif The last straw, to Katrina, was when she rode a horse for Don Swan while Katrina was gone. That got her fired. I was just a young teen, sort of on the outside, but I just remember thinking, "So, she rode a horse for another trainer????Big whoopin' deal." Little did I realize the animosity between Katrina and Don! /infopop/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif I inherited the rides on Sweetie/No Exit, whatever the heck that little red TB gelding was called that Chris rode. Must say I cleaned up on him, and until recently showed a similar horse in the amateur division and my mom and sister would always remark, "It just brings back memories of you on Sweetie." /infopop/emoticons/icon_razz.gif
As for asking questions about trainers currently, I see you have e-mail. I'll e-mail you and we can be a tad more discreet. But go ahead and "ask" the names here... You'll probably get far more e-mail responses than just me!

The BHSM (blond horse Show Mom) belonged to none-other that Julie Smith. I used to get such a kick out of seeing her navigate the tricky footing in her stiletto heels. And the blond hair and short skirts. She looked so trendy back then in comparision to my HS Mom, who was heavily into sensible shoes.
The girl I am referring to had the initials NH and her sister was the real riding star of the family. There was a birth announcement in Horses as well as a wedding announcement.
I ran into Lee Garrett about 10 years ago when I lived in Laguna Beach. She was working in the White House (Bar & Grill on PCH) there as the head bartender.
From last I heard about Dee Dee her Dad had set her up with a management job in one of his health clubs in Hawaii I think. But that was some time ago.
I remember in 1969, Lisa Wagner had a terrible riding accident at the fair grounds riding Harriet. I think she hit her head really hard and I don't think she really ever rode after that.
I saw her some years later and I could tell that the accident had taken its toll so to speak. The Wagner's were such nice folks.
I have really loved seeing all the wonderful pictures that have been posted. Keep 'em coming!
On a different note. I ran across a lady selling old editions of HORSES magazines on EBAY. She has a collection of about 15 years worth. If any of you are interested. let me know & I'll pass along her email address. She doesn't have many Christmas issues though.
Some terrific rider combinations I remember are Best Bet and Susie, Get Smart and Rob Gage, Gilligan and Susie Arnold, EastPoint and Debbie Flanigan, Patti Huddleston and Troubador, Munnings and Jimmy Kohn, Diane Dixon and Chances Are (I think or was that Francie Steinwedell??)
Do you remember that the fences for the kids classes were 3'6" with 4' spreads. Maybe our first fence, a brush, was kinda a warmup at 3' or so. Nowadays, it's 1'9" long stirrup (I just got back into showing last year after 30 years..call me crazy). I thought to myself what the heck is Long Stirrup, then the 2'6" medal classes the 3' Medals etc. What ever happened to Hunter Hack classes. I loooved that class. So many changes. I really feel dated.
The other night I watched "The Horse in the Grey Flannel Suit" they did some show filming at Portagese Bend HS. Did the riders that you caught glimpses of looked terrible??? Or did they just get some bad shots. There's one scene where they are filming someone on course and the horse chipped at every fence and the rider looked like a passenger. Is it my imagination???
Sorry for being so long winded...but I am having so much fun... /infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

PamM, I wish I had a relative in the TB breeding and pedigree business, but alas....
When did you ride at Lake Oswego Hunt Club? Portland Hunt Club was about 4 miles west of the little town of Progress, on Scholls Ferry Road, technically in Beaverton or Tigard. It was at the top of a hill, and most of what you could see from there was farmland. They had a clubhouse, outdoor ring and outdoor hunt course and the views of the surrounding countryside were spectacular! I went back to Oregon for the first time in about 25 years last spring, and all the places I rode at (Portland Riding Academy, Sunwood Farms, Mountain Park Stables) were long gone, replaced by houses and shopping malls, as well as Ridgeview Equestrian Center. Quite sad.
Lake Oswego Hunt Club is one of the sole surviving stables from my era, and looks virtually unchanged in all that time! It's been designated a historic landmark by the state of Oregon, and I found a website for them that you might want to check out:
http://www.lakeoswegohunt.com
SuaveReno, I loved Best Bet, and was lucky enough to compete against Susie a couple of times when I rode at the California State Fair. And I remember Eastpoint and Debbie Flanagan - wasn't he a really flashy bay (or chestnut, brain cells are failing me) with lots of chrome??
Does anyone recall Donna Storkan? I actually met her one year at the Oregon State Fair when she was up competing from California, and we became friends. I kept in touch with her while I was in
college in Southern California, and actually spent a Thanksgiving with her at a show at the Earl Warren Showgrounds in Santa Barbara. Her dad was nice enough to have a catered turkey dinner for all of her barn friends, which we ate out by their portable stalls! I lost touch with her after I moved to Northern California, but saw a few years ago in an alumni newsletter that my husband gets that she was married, with a couple of kids, living in Eugene, Oregon.
And finally, thanks for the nice words, Merry! It seemed like the local papers back then were always taking publicity photos for shows -- I have several more, along with ones of people I rode with, in an old scrapbook.

Sure, I remember Troubadour! And Peggy Osterkamp had Mateus. But both those horses had just left the scene when I started showing. Peggy Osterkamp's family's dairy is literally down the road from my house. I've run into her a few times in town. She had Eastern Flier turned out in a corral in front until he died. Her younger sister, Karen, was in a student teaching class with me, while we were getting our teaching credentials (yes, the state of California allowed me to instruct the youth of America!).
Yes, it must be really strange to you to see "Long Stirrup" classes. I had to have that one explained to me, too!
Okay, Calif. clique, let's all take a deep breath. We seem to have breathed new life into this thread yet again!
It's alive, alive, I say! /infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

I loved your picture!!! Your name sounds soo familiar to me. Did you advertised in HORSES from time to time? If I recall EastPoint was a flashy chestnut that Jimmy also showed in conformation hunters as well as Debbie. I remember when Susie won her Onodarka medal (or was it the finals...talk about brain cells failing!!) on Best Bet at Santa Barbara /infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

After reading Erin's post about BB statistics for this website, I got to thinking that this topic might ultimately have more pages and posts than any other....so I put my brain cells (or what is left of them on this 2nd day of a 3 day weekend) to work to see if I could think of any longer topics. The only one that came to mind was 'Bush vs. Gore Re: Horse Industry' (how could we forget THAT one?? /infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif ) , so I went all the way back to PAGE 64 of the posts (we have all definitely been a chatty bunch since that time!) and checked it out. It had 28 pages, 557 posts, and ran from 10/20 - 11/8/2000.
Q for Merry is currently 26 pages long, with 508 posts and has run from 11/23/2000 - 2/12/2001. It's definitely had a second wind the past few days, so it may go on FOREVER....I think we're gonna be #1 soon!!!! /infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif (and major THANKS to Coreene for starting it all) /infopop/emoticons/icon_cool.gif

I take my daughter to the snow today and this thread takes off.
I have noticed the chips in the movie The Horse in the Grey Flannel SUit, and some of the other faux pas. I am really beginning to notice them after watchin g them quite a lot last week. I think four times in the last five days. My two year old likes to watch the horses jump. You are not going to believe this but it was I, SuaveReno, not Jackie that blew the whistle on Chris at the OC A show. Chris was 3 years my senior and was a senior when I was a freshman at CdMHS. I was really upset because this show was my last as a junior and I really wanted to end my "career" with a bang. Eric Atterbury was the judge (and he was kinda poopy judge to begin with) and I believe she won 3 flat classes. So I had my Dad drive back to the house and pick up my High School annual and we showed it to Ralph V. Walker, then Chris needed to show her birth certificate and the rest was history. So Katrina had no knowledge of her age??? Hard to believe since she was at UCI at the time and had to be riding during the day. Interesting stuff. /infopop/emoticons/icon_eek.gif

Thanks for the link to LOHC. I noticed that it was last updated about a year ago--and with al the infighting between the H/J, eventers. dressage and lesson people, who knows if Mary von Zimmerman is still there?
I rode with Jim Dahlquist when I first moved to Portland from SF (married an Oregonian and thought it would be nice to live in the same state. He disagreed--wanted me to stay in SF and we would keep commuting both ways. Turned out he was probably right and the marriage would have lasted a lot longer, LOL. But that's another story...) I loved the indoor ring, but the politics between the different groups was just too much.
Some of Jim's customers bought a beautiful barn and he moved into it and took 90% of his people with him. I had left by then because of the aforementioned politics and the lack of turnout. (I had gotten into the babies off the track by then and needed turnout for them, so I moved to a barn in Sherwood.)
I certainly miss parts of Oregon life (Spring, summer and fall to name 3...) and the beach (we had a beach house in Gearhart that I miss a lot...) But Lexington, KY is "Horse capital of the World" and is a great place to live --or will be when it warms up...

I believe I mentioned her wayyyyyyyyy back Pam M.
No one replied.
She use to have Richard Keller show her horses, long before Gary came out of juniours.
They would sometimes trailer up and show at the LWSC Fourth of July shows, at Bridle Trails State Park, along with lots of Arabian people from AZ and CA.
I saw a photo of a little girl showing Quail Run in a Quirk edition of HORSES.
But like you I have no idea what she is doing now. /infopop/emoticons/icon_confused.gif

Should we publish an index to all the tidbits we've hashed out already? /infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif
You know, SuaveReno, that whole Chris and lying about her age: I think that was one of the first shows I ever rode in, and it was filled with controversy!OOOHHH! /infopop/emoticons/icon_eek.gif How it foretold the intrigue I would later encounter in my horse show life! I just remember Chris's suspension with the AHSA as being all hush-hush, because remember, back in those days, practically all we had were little schooling shows OR the A shows. Bravo to you for turning her in! /infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif Long, long after that, after she left Katrina's, I was working at the Warehouse restaurant in Newport. I did the books there, but I had to work on the floor one Sunday brunch, and there was Chris on what seemed like a "date" with this much older guy. It was kind of awkward, like, "Hi, remember me? I'm the one who inherited the fancy horse you used to ride before you were 8-balled by the AHSA?" /infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif
By the way, my sister Beezer is not cracking the whip over her reporters at the Times today, so she's not near a computer. I'm sure she'll check in on this thread tomorrow. I must go now and feed my koi and bullfrogs. /infopop/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif

PamM, when did you train with him? A grade school friend of mine, Alexandra Zell (Zi Zi way back when....) rides with him and has the very nice hunter Lucky You. He was 14th in the national AHSA standings for open working hunter last year, and has won numerous championships in the green and open divisions at Indio over the last three years. He was in the ribbons at Indoors last fall as well. And Zi Zi has won a lot with him in the older A/A's. I just saw from HITS show results page that he was reserve champion Open Conformation hunter at Indio last week.
Did you know her? She started out riding at Portland Riding Academy as I did, then moved over to Lake Oswego Hunt Club, and then I lost touch with her. Ironically, she never showed as a junior, but it has been fun reconecting with her to an extent by following her current show career!

Yes the Chris thing was pretty bad. I was friends withher sister Candy but after that she quit talking to me. Did she do much riding after that. I can't imagine her as one of Katrina's top riders is that at that particular show she was not turned out very well and irony of ironies she wins. But then again Eric Atterbury was the judge. Speaking of Eric, he used to be one of the top H/J's judges in the 30's 40's and 50's judging shows like the National Horse Show. But was a funny old coot tho'. He was a Brit with big pop-eyes and I always felt in was "in the cups" a little. /infopop/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif

Whatever happened to:
Caron Gilbertson, Susie Dickel, or Diane Dixon?
Can someone tell me about the early days of Kathy Hobstetter?
Speaking of Caron, I rode at Circle K for a litle while with Kenny about 78-79 and I remember when they were an "Item". It was so strange because when he was romancing Leslie Oertly, Caron must have been about 9 or so. So when I saw them together, i thought he's really robbing the cradle. /infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif
He recently judged the OCHSA championship show and boy has he changed. Y'know how sometimes you remember people from a contex of about 30 years ago? Well that's what I did. I rode at the OC fairgrounds over last summer. Actually N2Jumpers (who was my first and so far only BB Buddy to meet in person) hooked me up with Hillary Ridland. At that time I only had the one horse up in Agoura Hills so I had no one to ride during the week. They were short one person so I just hacked horses for her after work. Then they hired someone full time so my gig was up /infopop/emoticons/icon_frown.gif But then I bought my other greenie who I keep at El Toro Stables.
Unfortunately N2Jumpers no longer rides there due to lack of horse. Which actually works out for me because I take full advantage of her horse status and have her attend to my beastly mare (who tried to kill both of us last week) when I am not around.
I also saw your post about OCF relocating to El Toro. Wondering where you heard that. Somewhere back on this thread I discussed my pipe dream of building another Eq. center in Irvine so I am trying to assess the OC stable supply and demand. Do you have any other details? Sources?
It's great to have another CA Clique member! Welcome!

Regarding the OC Fairgrounds proposed relocation, I heard that through Kathy Hobstetter and I am not quite sure where she got her information.
That would sure be nice if that happened. We really need a decent facility here in OC.

I'll be at Indio weeks 5&6, so unfortunately not next weekend. And as luck would have it, I was in the desert last weekend for some down-time but it was the off-week.
And John is awesome. He rode my mare in the IHF last year. Hopped on a few minutes before the class and did an amazing job with a mareish (pig-headed) warmblood (thick-headed)and she's chestnut (overly sensitive)
I can probably pretty much sum up what all our rounds will look like:
-Trot in ring
- Add leg to canter, head goes up, mares neck resembles that of giraffe.
- Pick up wrong lead
- Canter to first fence, right to base, horse snaps knees and jumps beautifully.
- Spook in corner, head back up, now heading for the first line prematurely.
- See forward distance, gallop, chip, gallop, long to oxer.
- Get her attention back somewhat, canter nicely to next line, hit perfect distance, relax into stride.
- Realize no way in H*ll I am making it down that line with the stride I have, gallop, chip, add stride.
- Continue in simlar manner over last 2 lines

Merry: Believe it or not I did read the thread, I must apologize for the short term memory loss.
The same thing happened this past summer at the HB July Theme. I was riding in the nefarious Long Stirrup. My first round, I won....my second round I go back in there jump 2 jumps and all of a sudden i forgot the way (and y'know those courses ain't too hard). I looked at the judge and I said something like Opps! and we both started to laugh and I cantered toward the gate to find out from my trainer (who was sputtering at me) just where I should be going. But my brain literally went on vacation. I finshed up and thought to myself, "what I am reallly good at is sitting on my horse and yakking". Whay can't they have a class in that. We could call it the hack and yak class.
Ok obviously, I am brain dead now..thanks for indulging me.. /infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Found ya! Hey girls, I know that at least one of you is supposed to be working! Merry, I am quite impressed with your ability to keep this thread going! I used to post here before they changed over the boards but life has gotten so crazy that now I just pop in on occasion to lurk and see what is happening in the world.
This rain is really a bummer - but I have to say it has worked well with my travel plans - I had to go out of town the last couple of weekends and I see that I didn't miss much quality time in the saddle.
So - I am officially submitting my resume to join the CA clique. . .okay - scratch that - one look at my resume and you'll never let me in. But I do have some valuable insights to offer! Such as - don't believe Chef's prediction of her mare's Indio debut. . .the girl has got no faith ; )

SuaveReno, I like the idea of the hack and yak class. I think it should be a whole division. /infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif Something I could maybe be champion in. Hack & Yak. Definitely a division.
back to the comments that you made regarding the Horse in the Grey Flannel Suit...at least your daughter prefers that to Barney. i can't tell you how many years I had to put up with that Purple Dinosaur. Was Kenny Nordstrom in that one too? I wasn't sure if he did the Dean Jones stunts. Do you remember th "Horsemasters"? I recently got a copy off of EBAY. What a stitch to watch it!!! Love those styles.
Tell me..I didn't see it in the thread..are you an Equine Vet? I would have loved to have been a vet but i couldn't get through the math. I count like trigger!

And Barney, well, he's fading out fast. My daughter (2 1/2) was never into him. Thank God!

SuaveReno no I am not an Equine Vet. I spent to much time socializing in collegeand riding instead of what I was suppose to be doing. I think that was studying at least that was what my da was always asking about. Math Yuck!
I now work for a couple of the local equine vets as an assistant. It is a great job I get to be around alot of different types of horses and learn alot about lameness etc.
I don't remember Horsemasters. Was it another Disney movie or a TV show. I would like to see it.
Speaking of old horse things my husband brought home a record on Stock Seat Equatation by Ronnie Richards. Some one that works for him bought it at a record show or something like that. On the cover it lists the other one as Hunt Seat Equatation, I don't remember who taught on that one. Does any one else remember these records? I know there are a few of you who also remember what records are.
I have been blessed my daughter 2 1/2 also has been a deprived child she doesn't know what or who Barney is.

As for the Hack and Chat class, may I remind you posters here that I may be the only living rider who has gone OFF COURSE in hunter hack? At Del Mar, no less? /infopop/emoticons/icon_eek.gif It was at a glorified schooling show at Del Mar, a fundraiser for the Am. Trakehner Assoc., and Dale Pederson was the judge. My horse hacked beautifully. I go into the center and indeed begin chatting it up with my girlfriend. Then I realize I'm on the end of the line-up. Dale has me go first. Was I listening to instructions? Noooooo! I kind of thought something was a little odd when I jumped the oxer backwards /infopop/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif . When I got back to the line-up my friend whispers, "Cindy, you just went off course!" /infopop/emoticons/icon_redface.gif

When you're done with Riders (which Dublin is also reading), I will extend you the same offer I did to her which is that you can borrow the rest of the series, which sits quite near your Irvine home but far from the Glendale office:
Rivals (television and some hunting)
Polo (duh)
The Man Who Made Husbands Jealous (National Hunt)
Apassionata (racing and music)
Score (three day and mystery)
All by Jilly Cooper. Then y'all can borrow my video of the Riders miniseries, which is not very good but extremely pretty. Taryn gets it this week.
Then, when you're done with that, you can borrow French Relations and Well Groomed by Fiona Walker, both of which are filled with Jilly Cooper type characters and the series is primarily three day eventing.

2. remember Christine Lund, who used to be on Channel 7 in LA? (The one Don Henley sang about in that song "Dirty Laundry" - "the bubble-headed bleach blonde who comes on at five"). Saw her showing at HB several times but it's been a few years.

As for Linda Blair, I used to show in her AO classes out here when she owned God Bless (this roany bay). Then there were the ah, "dark days" of her life. Last I saw/heard of her she was on the east coast, with hunters. She was on 20/20, or something like that, being interviewed about the sordid horse murdering for insurance $ scandal.
I saw Christine Lund at the Orange Co. championsip show in 1999, so I think her kid still rides (I think ponies).
Bree Walker, the newscaster with the different hand/finger "arrangement" (I don't know what the PC term is anymore) /infopop/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif took lessons out at Paddock a couple of years ago with my friends, but I don't think she's doing the news out here, so maybe she and her family have moved.

Beezer, I worked at HIX for one week in early 1985 and walked out. Some lady called Sharon was head of circ and some gal called Beth was just starting, too. I had just moved back from a year in England doing PR and couldn't decide what to do.
But we did meet then. A gal I was in college with worked there as well. I remember her saying her career goal was to "get as high in the company as Beezer," but of course she used the real name. I can't remember her name. Short and blonde. She was in ed. I was supposed to be a rep and then they stuck me in circ.

Okay, Merry and MO, I'll admit to knowing Melissa, however not well, but I was pretty into the horse owner mode back then so saw her at shows often. She isn't really a flake and probably isn't actually lying, only perhaps stretching the truth a bit.
She was the trainer for a private barn, Rancho Loma Prieta, up in the Santa Cruz mountains, very near the epicenter of the 1989 earthquake. The facility was owned by the Reed family. For some time they also boarded a small, select group of outsiders, but eventually did away with that due to insurance considerations and reverted to a strictly private barn.
Now you have to remember that I'm having lots of "senior moments" so don't remember all I want to from those days. I did drive by there on the way to the barn Christmas party (the hostess lives just down the road from the old Rancho Loma Prieta) and it looked a bit inactive, but still a lovely facility.
Anyhow, the mother and 2 daughters rode -- their names all escape me. They had a bunch of nice hunters and equitation horses. Melissa trained them all well and she did some of the open class riding also. The barn was pretty successful in those days, and those were the days that the Rancho Murieta teamster-built facility was in its hey day. Larry Langer was putting on lots of A shows there then.
Okay, onward. The Reeds eventually did branch out into jumpers, basically for Melissa to show, if I'm remembering correctly. Though I can't remember any of the names, Melissa did quite well with them as she is (was?) a good rider. I think a jumper name or two was mentioned several pages back and they sounded right on.
If it's of great interest, I can do some more digging (taking notes this time) once Indio is over and maybe come up with some more juicy tidbits.

Hack Attack - when your horse does the uncontrollable flat race during "Canter, canter your horses please"

Hack Tack - what fell into the arena and is now stuck in your horse's hoof
Hack Smack - faceplant in front of the judge

Hack Jack - little cowboy hat-wearing decoration you get in the drive-thru on your way to the show

You recieve a STAR for the day (evening)!! Finally someone came up with solid facts about Melissa! Bravo!!
She is now remarried and frequently talks of her California day's. However I do think she probably stretches the truth a little. (Not as BIG a WIG as she wished perhaps?)
Well, I haven't spoken to her in a while. She did just a couple of things that I felt were not handeled properly and truthfully not in good taste. But she is a good rider and trainer, so, once spring comes, I don't know if we'll ride with her again? We don't have much to choose from out here.
I do have a nice 17.3 hand Han. (1986) that she rode in modified's that can go on to do GP's or High Jr./Ao's or Eq too for that matter, if any one is interested. He was one of the matters that we, (my husband and I), felt was handled in poor taste. So he's back with us, but we really have no time for him. He deserves someone who can take him on and show and win!!! He too is 100 % sound! Gorgeous bay, 4 white socks, thick wavey tail, star and snip, turns over behind, dwells in air, trained up to 4th level dresage. "Grandeur" is his name, but we call him "Huey". He's a cutie!
If anyone is interested e-mail me. I'm already getting a disk together for "Rusty" on my TB/Han. mare. I can get one made for him too. No trainer $ since we pulled him out.

I really think we huntseat riders got a much better education than the riders of today, because we had to sit in the grandstands at the A shows and watch all sorts of classes: stockseat medals, reining classes, trail, and oh, the lively and thrilling saddleseat and fine harness classes. Didn't you just love the 5-gaited events, when the announcer would triumphantly shout, "Now, Rack! Rack on!" About that time our horses would bolt from the in-gate back to the show barns! /infopop/emoticons/icon_redface.gif
Beezer: Not only did we have the mare with the toothbud in the ear and the draining channel of goo, but what about your mare, who, at her ripe old age STILL will not let anyone TOUCH her once fungus-infested left ear? "Warning! Your hands are approaching the ear zone. Warning!"

As I mentioned, my marketing side takes over and I kinda go overboard. I guess I was over-compnesating for the lack of effort my trainer has put into getting her sold. Sorry, I am just enthusiastic. /infopop/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif
Does anyone remeber seeing Noel Harrion (son of Rex andstart of the Girl from U.N.C.L.E.) at the shows? I used to see him at the Fullerton Recreational Riders shows all the time.
I remember Stacy and Georgiana. CeCe Durante was related to Jimmy Durante, I think and Ce Ce Presle was Cecil B. De Millne's grandaughter. She had a terrific grey horse. I can't remember his name tho'

And Mo's jumper sounds wonderful, too. Too bad that right now my wallet does not open far enough for a second horse. Then again, I have no time...
On the memory front, who remembers Robert Ridland's Boy Colonial? A jumper in the mid to late 70s (not exactly sure about the year).
A guy at our barn announced yesterday that he was looking for a very tall (because he is 6'3"), very broke jumper that he could do the AAs with and doesn't want to pay more than $12,500. I pass this on without comment and because you just never know.

Waht is John french's deal as a private trainer for Cathy Mendez? I thought that meant that he would only work for her---- but if he is riding your horse (which I can see that he obviously is...) then he must have some sort of side training thing going on? Or does he just ride other horses at shows, and only has Cathy Mendez' horses at home?

PamM, did you see my followup post about Jim Dahlquist -- I think it kind of got buried a few pages back....
And does anyone remember Donna Storkan, or her brother Tom? He had Mississippi Mud, a nice hunter which he subsequently sold to Marty and Nancy Kraemer, who rode with me up in Oregon. (No, not the Southern California Cramers/Kraemers discussed previously). I met Donna when she was up competing at the Oregon State Fair, and we stayed in touch for several years afterwards. Very nice girl.
I can't believe it, but nonhorsey Mr. Dublin has a connection to this topic! When he was going to UCLA, Noel Harrison was in one of his classes....

John just did some catch riding for me as for his arrangement with the Mendez's, I gotta think that he might have some side bar arrangements on the side, however I can't know for sure if he has placed all his eggs in one basket so to speak. He's so incredibly tallented and in demand...

Beezer knows this one!! CeCe Durante was Jimmy's (adopted) daughter. Beezer is snotty enough to admit that one of her fondest memories of those miserably cold and rainy shows at Santa Barbara was seeing one of her grand horses (Royal Blue, maybe??) give her a mud bath. /infopop/emoticons/icon_razz.gif
CeCe Presley was (or at least I vaguely remember this) married to the developer. MO, it would seem to me that using Melissa for what she's good for, training and riding, but not transacting any buy/sell/breed business with her might just be in your best interests. Since good trainers/riders seem to be in short supply in your part of the country, I'd sure give that some thought. I'd hate to see you burned again, but since you want help and Melissa seems to still be a good rider and trainer, you may be cutting off your nose to spite your face in this case.
Being from Western Michigan -- it seems like that was a past life -- I can understand that good horse facilities might be few and far between. Winter sure can dampen the enthusiasm!

Now, for my delve into the horse-shopping-swapping foray: This girl in our trainer's barn, who's is 13, is just the cutest kid and a naturally talented rider; excellent eq., good leg, soft hands. Solid intermediate level. She needs an older eq/medal horse, one that ideally has a lot of miles, and is dropping down a peg from the 3'6" and will be solid in the 3foot medals for a while. She does mostly county and B shows. Think "old campaigner" here, although not a complete cripple. Anyone from say, Fresno south have anything to divvy up? /infopop/emoticons/icon_confused.gif

Your JR's are sooo cute. When I was at Indio weeks one and two there was a person there selling ton's of terriers. I don't know if anyone else saw him or not, but I thought the best way to get a JR is to go to a breeder.
Do you handle your own dogs or do you have a handler when you show? I showed SCWT's for awhile until my male short circuited and had to be put down. He started getting pretty aggressive abd the final straw was that he attacked my older daughter. Not too seriously but it was just the beginning. I came to find out that his grandfather had to be put down as well for a bad temperment. JR's seem really cute and not to aggressive. Would that be right?

My old horse, Tulie, was quite photogenic so it seemed like we'd always get at least one good picture per show. And of course, I can never resist ordering pics! I was at Indio week 2 and they got a really good pic of me and Cypress over a really pretty light blue/yellow/white oxer and I think I will order it when I go back for week 6. Oh, by the way...I saw that you mentioned Karen at Leather and Spice earlier. She is SO nice...we (my trainer and barnmates - we tend to travel in a herd) always go visit with her whenever we see her at a show. Inevitably, one of us buys something while we're there! She had some nice Van Teal huntcoats on sale that I bought from her (in November), and I love the Brighton belts she has.
I go to 4-5 week long shows per year. Last year we did Indio for 2 weeks, then Memorial Day Classic at LAEC, then Blenheim in July, then the National Preview at LAEC...no small shows in between, though. This year I'd like to go to Showpark at the end of April (a source of contention, since my friend wants to go to the Del Mar National the next week, and I don't want to go to that one), Memorial Day at LAEC, Blenheim in July, Jumping Festival in September, and the Preview and LA National at LAEC. Then maybe a few Gold Coast shows in between. I have to plan my schedule carefully because of work and having to take time off. But I made sure to put a pic of Cypress in my office at work, so that when I am really frustrated w/my job, I can remember why I'm there! /infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

But I figured since so many of you seem to remember horses from several years ago, maybe one of you would know my old horse, Whitney. I only knew her by that name, and once someone told me that they thought her show name may have been Steal It. Supposedly, according to my old trainer, she was a very successful hunter and was some PCHA reserve champion at some point in time. She would have been born in the late 60's/early 70's, and thus shown in the 70's/early 80's, as we estimated she was in her early 20's when I had to put her down. I only had her for a year, and she was an old school horse by the time I got her. But apparently she was in Mike Edricks barn for some time, and I believe she may have done the 4' hunters at some point in time. Anyway, here's a pic of her, although she looks like any typical TB...no outstanding features or anything. Anyone have any vague recollection of a horse by the name of Steal It?

Alas, no. I just have two (long "fixed") full-brothers (littermates) who are more my kids than any kids could have been ... if that makes ANY sense at all. /infopop/emoticons/icon_razz.gif And despite the razzing Merry gives them, let me point out that she is the one who always wants them to go to shows, gives them rides in her precious truck and buys them presents every Christmas ... like a good aunt should. They are finally settling into middle age (kinda like their mom /infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif ) so are not as entertaining as they used to be but they are far easier to live with.
Since I can't imagine life without a JRT or two in it, I'll always have 'em. But I'd be the first to say that they are just NOT the dog for everyone and, yes, absolutely ... get one only from a good, reputable breeder. Personally, I'm of the belief that it should be someone who believes in the principles of the JRT Club of America but that's a debate for another thread. /infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif
Now back to our regular programming....
Suave ... Isn't Jeanne a kick? I really like her. She was more Merry's "contemporary" than mine but I remembered the name and, like Merry said, wound up buying one of my favorite horses from her. Last I heard, she was giving up her training operation and aiming to get her amateur status back. It was a question of her just not having enough time for either the students or her family. Haven't talked to her in quite a while, though, so can't swear to what her current plans are.
Another name from the past, and one that ties several strings of the thread together: Nikki Smith. Rode with Russell at Winrock. Bought a very pricey prospect from Bob that turned out to be a lovely ... under saddle horse.

ceCe Pressley's nice gray horse was named _______. Damn. I can picture them in Horses -- I can SEE the horse and Cece with her red hair. I just cannot SEE the name....
Da Bear's job in life is to pack beginners around -- anything up to 2'6". He is a total point and shoot horse (he also wins all the beginner rider under saddles). He is a dear. But he is a tad too short strided to do the 3' -- or, should I say that he can do it (and win) with a pro who can nail the first jump and keep on truckin' down the lines (he jumps like a pony --knees under his chin /infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif ). But with an ammie, he sometimes has to take an extra stride before he jumps out of the line. SIGH. But he is cute. His secondary job in life is eating. I have never seen a full grown horse stay so fat on so little food.....

Oh, and by the way, it's getting "rainier", not "rainer". Or are you referring to the type of horse you'd like next? (Even then it was misspelled). /infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif Nothing like razzing the little sister, eh?
And speaking of dogs... I need a smallish, NON-SHEDDING type of dog to accompany me to shows. Must be small enough to sneak into motel rooms. Must be willing to ride in pick-up truck. Must also make good household/indoor companion. Must not be a crazed Jack Russell. (Oh, and I'm not spending $500.) Anyone? Anyone? /infopop/emoticons/icon_confused.gif

Bumpkin: I actually have a schnauzer! It's our second one. We love them... as house pets! My current one is named Merry because I got her as a Christmas present about 8 yrs. ago. She's the world's best dog. I know that for a fact. I have the trophy, so there! (Of course, I was the judge and she was the only entrant... /infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif ). But alas, Merry does not like the horses. She becomes a black hairy puddle whenever she sees one. Do you think a male would be better suited for part-time horse show life?
As for CeCe P.'s gray horse. If it wasn't High Tide, then who was? Okay, what about Silver Lining? Someone's fancy white/gray horse had that name out here. Wasn't it hers?

I should go say hello to Tulie and bring him some carrots. I ride at 9am on Saturday, so I will stop by around noon. I'll wear a black Victorian Farms baseball hat so if you are there, you will be able to recognize me. And I'm extremely jealous of your covered arena...we have to slog around in the mud! Fortunately our small arena was rideable yesterday, although our big jumping arena was still too wet. Hopefully it will be dry in time for my lesson tomorrow! /infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

You guys, me thinks it's time to bid farewell to this thread. We are not only taking up a lot of room on the BB, but there are some disparaging remarks being made about our inability to start new threads.
What do you say? We can begin new topics. We can still relive the past and relish the present. We may even end up with yet another 30-page thread. So, what do you say? How about we begin our eulogy and have a funeral? I e-mailed as many of you as I could to prepare you for this fateful day.
Who wants to be first to begin the memorial service?
AAJumper

Who would have known it would grow up to be such a fine thread on the BB? First, there were just a few posters...Coreene (the mother of the thread), Merry, Beezer, Bumpkin, Dublin, C&C, Chef, and Elizabeth, just to name a few (sorry if I forget any names...I'm just too broken up to think clearly here) and later others like SuaveReno joined in the fun. The thread inspired some of us to meet in person in Pomona, and I found someone who knows my old horse, Tulie, in his new home.
And the memories, ahhhhh, the memories, even though they weren't my own. I will miss the thread. Yes, I know there will be other threads, but no thread can ever live up to this thread. It will have a place in BB history, 34 pages and all. May it rest in peace. /infopop/emoticons/icon_frown.gif /infopop/emoticons/icon_frown.gif /infopop/emoticons/icon_frown.gif /infopop/emoticons/icon_frown.gif /infopop/emoticons/icon_frown.gif

No, no AAJumper. Deep within you all is a NEW thread, waiting to come out. By holding on to this thread, to the past, you are just keeping the door closed on what else is out there.
I know it is hard, and it is sad, but there comes a time in every thread's life when it needs to be. . . let go . . . so that the next thread can come to fruition.

Aye, when it was but a wee tyke it questioned the meaning of life: "Why, oh Wise One, do the movie stars have all the money, and all the fancy horses, but they make utter fools out of themselves and basically ride like cr*p?"
Then, it began to utter the names of the Famous Ones: JJ Smith, Gary Ryman, Bob McDonald, Mr. Harris, Linda Hough, Tammy Hickok, and Bob McDonald yet again. And just as it asked the unanswerable, "Who is Melissa Cardenas and is she really telling the truth about her past?"someone stepped forward with the answer.
We raised this thread on summers in Santa Rosa, sunsets in Malibu, rainstorms in Pomona. We even gave it a pet recently: a gray Jorgi Schneadle (Greyhound/Jack Russell/Corgi/Schnauzer/beagle). And all along we gazed at its change in tastes: plaid huntcoats, stock pins, poofy breeches, stock pins.
As we gaze into the poor lass's eyes for the last time, we see she has a question on her face. What is it, dear? Speak up, my child.
"Whatever..." (cough, gasp, gurgle)..."happened to Kimmie McDonald?"

Pardon me for extending the thread, but why should something die just because it is long? I think it is lovely.
Anyway, Beezer, about Emmett Kelly. I seem to recall an Emmett Kelly who was chestnut with lots of chrome. Of course, I would know nothing about Ca. horses, so it is probably a different one, unless it was sold east. It was a while ago.
The East also had a chestnut/white Gene Kelly. he was at Cismont the same time as Charisma, who was later sold to George Lindeman. It was my understanding that, when the horse failed to go well for George, Kenny offered to buy him back for the full sale price.

It is with great pleasure that I note starting what seems to be the longest thread ever on the BB (or so they tell us).
It is with great delight that I have found so many wonderful new buddies, library exchanges, eBay tricks on buying old Horses magazines; that I have remembered so many wonderful names from the past, looked at so many photos, bla bla bla, yadda yadda.
Not only have we managed to haul out the names of just about everyone who ever rode in California, and their horses, and the celebs, and their parents, and the pets, and the bla bla bla and yadda yadda, we have also come to the very real conclusion that:
Rust Breeches Will Rise Again
I am sporting a chic black number to this funeral, something that Grace Kelly or Princess Caroline would also wear and, being of the Jackie O persuasion when it comes to sunglasses, a very large pair of chi-chi Christian Dior shades. Because, no matter how much it rains in California, one must ALWAYS sport shades.

Jaime Lynn: Master Dan is another Linda Hough trained horse (owned by Megan Johnstone). She bought him from George Lindemann when GL moved on to bigger and better things. At the time, Megan had 4 junior horses -- two large and two small (since that is the maximum amount you are allow to qualify...). She had Master Dan and Watership Down (bought from the Nielsons in NY) and Homegrown (bought from Marie Reynolds in NC) and _______ the very fancy chestnut mare who went on to be the dam of January's Best (Magic ____???)
Magpie: Her name is Ann _________. She is about 5'4", with a cute round face and a chipper smile. She was at Flintridge when I was there (all 6 months of my tenure) and she went east shortly thereafter. Her last name is veddy veddy "Plymouth Rock". I am sure she had at least 12 relatives on the Mayflower. I just cannot remember her name! I DO remember that she went to Bakersfield and during the entire show, no one from Flintridge warmed her up or even watched her go and she came back FUMING! It was that very summer she went east to ride.
And what about Patsy Bell!!! Has no one mentioned her yet? She had Who Cares -- and then she bought Kaiko from Pat Warren and rode with me up north when she married Alan Severinson. What a NICE person she is! And a beautiful rider.

The bay I mentioned her buying from Bob would have been the late '70s; she had started showing ammy and this was supposed to be a "replacement" horse for her junior hunter ... which for some reason I recall as being a really pretty dark brown/black with fancy white trim. But I am SURE that Merry will correct me on this. /infopop/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif
Now. As for this "funeral" ... What's the PC term these days? A celebration of a life?? Yeah! That's it. (Quick! Someone find a copy of Elton John's "Funeral for a Friend" and get it on the stereo. And pour me one of those margaritas! Assuming, of course, that there are any left. And Katey, please tell your children to stop teasing my JRTs!)
So, let's all join hands around the ice sculpture of Clifford, the rental horse both Beezer's and Coreene's butts sat on (that ice sculpture's a nice touch Merry, I gotta admit) and relive the special moments of this coat. (It is officially a coat now, its threads have been woven together so many times.) We have met. We have bonded. We have formed the cult of Fleet Apple and we know that he is not related to Young Fleet. We have learned that Merry lords it over Beezer.
This coat waits for us on the other side of the Rainbow Bridge of cyberspace. Let us enjoy our edible bouquets of carrots, apples and molasses treats, raise a glass of flat diet Coke (which, as we all know, is the only drink served at horse show concession stands) and speak in hush tones of what we have created.
For it is a work of greatness. And we, as founding members of the California clique, should be proud.
Now please ... since I have hunted through my endless (and I do mean ENDLESS) closets of clothes for something appropriate to wear to this thing, do take notice of my sweater -- purchased in England -- and its lovely hunt scene pattern. I have matched it with a classy tweed skirt and sensible flats. Tasteful gold earrings, bracelet and a lovely pendant engraved with a portrait of the original Beezer complete the ensemble.
Sigh. Who gave Merry a drink?? Merry, dear, do get off the table. And do put your cashmere sweater back on. Parading around in your purple sports bra is inappropriate for the occasion. /infopop/emoticons/icon_eek.gif

I knew her!!! We went to Scripps College together (she was two years later than me) and lived in the same dorm. She accompanied me when we went to Cynthia Campbell's barn to visit my Maggie...who we had sold back to Cynthia after I went to college.
I just looked her up in my alumnae directory - She's married (now Pritzlaff), living in Castle Rock, CO and owns a sporting goods store.
We lost touch after college and I had completely forgotten about her - thanks for jogging my memory! /infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Is this a five star thread? "NO", shout we-all. "It is a 10 star thread."
But, five is as high as they go. Unfortunately, my efforts at having this thread die with the five star dignity that it deserves have gone for naught.
I say we petition the administrator to give this thread the 5th star it so richly deserves. Over 700 posts -- all in friendship. No meanness (unless you happen to be M.C. /infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif ) Not one administrator admonishment! Truly a top o the line five star-er if there ever was one.
FIVE, FIVE, WE WANT FIVE!

Regarding Emmett Kelley, the horse: Okay, shoot me if I'm wrong, but Diane Grod rode a horse named Emmet Kelley about the same time she rode a horse named Willie Nelson, and THAT Emmett Kelley was a dark, dappled bay with white... wasn't it???
Oh wait, I'm supposed to be on the other thread... /infopop/emoticons/icon_eek.gif
